A year ago we went over what it takes to make an awesome streaming/conference set up on the cheap, or even for ZERO dollars. Today we're revisiting this idea with a modest budget to see how much of a difference upgrading your setup can really make.

I’d recommend the Focusrite Scarlet Solo bundle cause the interface is better than Behringer’s, you get a pretty nice condenser mic included, the cables you need to get up and running, and even some decent headphones too. Roughly $270 USD? It’s a great starter pack - only other thing you’d need to get is a mic stand of some sort, be it a clamp one on the desk or a traditional mic stand

For the Canon cameras you could actually use the EOS webcam utility, which can turn a large quantity of their cameras into a clean webcam.
Exactly what I do and get a much better output quality than what was demoed
@@DJGeeks there are only a certain list of cameras it works for, you go to Canons website and find it. If you're on Mac however you have to be on an older version of OS to get the drivers to work properly. We had to opt for a camlink to capture the Rebel ti5 other wise the MacOS would need to be rolled back which wasn't an option. Windows shouldn't have issues
This exactly! The only drawback of sorts is that it only outputs at 1024×576, which would seem like a deal breaker, but it's actually not bad. I hooked my 7D mark I (12 year old camera now) with a 50mm lens and it looked way better than any 1080 webcam I stacked up against it.

When i hear the mics that he suggests. I immediately start to appreciate linuses mics and cameras.
Lol, yeah, both the camera and mic on this setup were hot garbage. Although lighting only half his face wasn't doing the camera any favors. Some serious EQ work might help out the mic too.
@@danieljensen2626 His EQ was hot garbage. As a guy who's worked with audio and sound for almost 8 years at this point, it's just that he didn't EQ the high end back into his SM48. SM48 and 58 can shine with a good EQ and compressor, and voicemeeter just isn't cut out for that unless you know what you're doing. Although, he IS right about the cheap capture cards, I have some and they're awesome little things. His camera really didn't do the capture cards justice though.
@@danieljensen2626 As a soundguy (and audio nerd) for the band of the school i was in and was using that mic i can say it can but improved by a lot compared to this here. Filter's + compression and noise gate to filter out background sound's are very helpful to improve sound.

A nice cheap option for lighting is a USB makeup ring light. They are often adjustable for brightness and tone and are fairly cheap.

6:31 Depending on which Cheap Canon you buy there actually IS a hack to get rid of the OSD and give it a clean HDMI out.
There's a custom firmware called "Magic Lantern" which supports most Canon DSLRs and gives you, among many others, the option to clear the OSD when in live view which gives you a clean HDMI out! Just make sure the model you're looking at is supported! ^^
Good video. Thank you for mentioning voice meeter, it's crucial free software for proper system-wide audio control. I've been recommending the Behringer UMC22 with Shure pga48 combo for years. Everyone always grabs a snowball, then realizes you are just trying to mic your voice, not the entire room and neighbors dog. I personally prefer as little overlay as possible. Viewers really don't care about last follows and donations being on-screen constantly. I highly suggest streams make a simple slide show looping all their social links as a watermark so that if a clip goes viral people know where to find you. Beyond that a Starting, brb, and ending screen is about all the overlay most streams need.
6:55 I did the same thing for my setup except with a 15 dollar Govee smart bulb. it's pretty bright and allows me to change softness and brightness for my streams. I highly recommend it.
Can you adjust the color temperature too?
I picked up a cree smart bulb, it looks great changes color and color temperature, but my lordy ot has this terrible highpitch noise but i think thats an issue with most cheap smart bulbs. Doesnt bother me as long as i habe headphones on and doesnt pick up on mic but is super annoying otherwise.
@@danieljensen2626 depends on the light you get, if you need that as a feature then make sure it has it in the product description. The govee bulb i have allows me to change color tempature.

Great! I have used Sony A5000 as webcam for some time now but I had to crop video in OBS to get rid of menu. Thank you so much for tip how to make HDMI clean.
That chocolate rain reference though. Also it would have been a huge improvement to just take that lamp behind you and use it to light up the other side of your face. $0 upgrade there.
Personally I just use two desklamps pointed kinda sideways/backwards to diffuse off the wall behind my desk and light up both sides of my face. (Although I'm not 100% happy with the color temperature I'm getting with LED bulbs). I like the quality of a phone camera using droidcam waaay more than any webcam, but it can be really laggy if you use it over wifi instead of wired.

Nice 🍫☔ reference there. Those were the days.
FYI: Any of the cannon ti6 and older, you can just straight screen capture via Elgato 4k camlink, and you turn the camera upside down so the face recognition doesn't show up if you don't have a manual lens. (I setup an e-commerce stream for a client and we limited most of the budget to what was already there)
As a soundguy who worked with this mic as a soundguy (and audio nerd) for the school band i was in i can say it can sound a lot better than in this video here. It needs a different eq profile. Also to make it sound better for streaming a compressor as well as a noise gate to cut out unwanted background noises is really helpful!

As someone who uses a subwoofer... for the love of God, use a damn pop filter!
Also the voice didn't sound good, possibly because of bad EQ settings. And the Sony camera had shit quality either because the settings were wrong or because they just didn't have enough light. All in all I'm very surprised at how (seemingly) little thought and effort went into this video. I've come to expect more, but I understand they can't all be winners.

Hi Linus, I would like to see more of these super information dense videos. I found this very entertaining and educational. I use a FIFiNE $30 mic and it’s really nice
I use a rockband mic
Sure (we use that mic for lectures), but you can't reach professional quality on a USB mic. The big advantage of an XLR-mic + interface setup is that you can upgrade them independently. Your starting interface probably has good enough pre-amps and converters (better than what USB-mics have integrated) to get you to a higher quality mic than what you start out with, and when you have a decent mic (like the SM57), you can then save for a better and more flexible interface or even separate pre-amp. The first upgrade after the basic set up should always be room-acoustics, though.

As far as audio goes, even a cheap condenser can sound great with a decent interface. The frequency response curve is much more natural sounding.
Yes! Finally someone shines light on using dynamic Shures for this (other than the pro looking over popular sm7) I think people think it looks wrong to use them by a desk.
The best thing about the sure SM series handheld mics, is how ridiculously many you can find for cheap on the used market.
Don't buy a new SM48 if you can find a nice used SM58beta, which sounds really great.
It doesn't sound entirely the same as an SM7 of course, but it's really comparable with the same dry dynamic mic character.
Well, that Twitter exchange b/w Madison & Linus was gold

4:43 How far back in time do you have to go to find a phone that doesn't limit charging at 100%?
2017 at least. Not that long at all.
You could root/jailbreak the phone OR use smart plugs and automation tools to turn the plugs on / off ba sa ed on battery level
He means under 100%. A lot of phones run the internals from battery power only, so putting a big constant drain on the battery while also trying to keep the charge at full is a great way to make the battery pack swell up and break things or even ignite. Some alter their behaviour when connected to slow or rapid chargers too, with rapid chargers generally being the better bet to avoid battery killing action (counter to what should be done for battery longevity under normal phone use). It's all very poorly documented and model-specific information.
setting a limit at 50% will make the phone last waaaaay longer
@PositiveMelon The usability tradeoff is much worse than replacing your battery...what 4 years down the line? And that's if you don't trade it in. The whole point of limiting your battery charges is to NOT end up with a phone that only holds 50% of its charge with wear. 😂

Im really hoping that was a "Linus has a high voice" joke.
The fact they're using my microphone as an example for the "cheap setup" really has me like
Feeling good that you picked a good cost effective setup?
Something often overlooked for a webcam/video device... Microsoft's Kinect v2. I got one from a buddy whose office was cleaning house and was dumping some old stuff they never used. I found an adapter on Newegg or Amazon, I forget which... and got the OBS plugin. It's actually really impressive for what it is. Mic isn't trash either, if your main mic dies or disconnects or whatever.
I would recommend going the Canon route for the camera; the T3 and T3i and above, and the PowerShot G5X Mark II, G7X Mark III, and SX70 HS are compatible with the Canon EOS Webcam Utility, which also removes the need for a capture card. Just hook up the camera directly to the PC via USB, and you'll get a clean output which can be selected as a webcam source.
Audio interface is the way to go everyone; however avoid going real cheap, it will hurt you in the long run.
@Krazy Kommando I own a Focusrite interface (my is built in to power a condenser mic) and highly recommend it; however I mainly use it for my DAW program but its also perfect for anyone looking to do live streams. My advice is to fine ones that have a short latency (very crucial) though depending on programs and your computer specs (quote Linus)“your mileage my very”.
"I move away from the mic to breathe in" lmfao, I appreciate the reference

Capture Card: Razer Ripsaw HD
No face camera.
Mic: Generic USB mic from walmart. Works surprisingly well for the $30 I paid.
As for software:
Recording video: OBS (also does audio for gameplay videos)
Recording Audio: Wavepad (audio for tutorial or voice-over style videos)
Editing: Davinci Resolve and Blender
Thumbnails (if I remember to make one): GIMP
So be aware, Behringer in general is just a hot mess, even for their higher end line. Had so many issues with their mixers and higher end interfaces. Try looking at Focusrite.
idk about the higher end stuff but the USB mixer I got works perfectly fine and so do the audio interfaces I recommend to friends.
I am really loving Audient for an interface.
When he said "A good dedicated audio interface" and they showed an U-Phoria I cried a little bit haha yeah they might be good enough until you try something actually good. Same happened to me moving from Focusrite to Antelope
I'm using a Steingberg UR22 mkII and it's fine, although I used to have an issue with all sounds suddenly turning to noise. I believe it was just a bad driver, though since I haven't had problems for years.
2:46 CHOCOLATE RAAAAAIN
A man of culture, I see.
For microphone I am rocking the XLR version Audio-Technica AT2020, and on a Rode PSA1 stand. For lighting I am currently using a Elgato Key Light that Linus mentioned in this video too, it works very well. Where my streaming setup falls a little short is my camera, as of now I am just using a knockoff GoPro called GitUp Git2P. As long as I have plenty of lighting it gets the job done, and I already had it laying around so it made sense to use.
The Canon EOS Webcam Utility works like a gem with OBS. Truly a lifesaver. And the Canon menus can be hidden on HDMI Output by clicking on the INFO button 3-times!
Linus: *Spends 7 minutes on optimizing stream visuals*
Vtubers: lol ok
At 2:46 Linus demonstrates the era he grew up in yet again. Shoutouts to Tay Zonday
Another option for a mic is the Samson Q2U it allows you to use it USB mode till you can get a good XLR Input device and then you don't have to sell your old XLR Input once you need to upgrade.
Also I'd recommend Virtual Audio Cables that way you can have the ability to isolate your Game, Discord, and Music from each other with no issues allowing you to control all the sources separately from each other and you could then listen to the copyrighted music you enjoy while streaming without having to use separate earbuds or worry about DMCA
There is a VERY simple work around for the cannon rebel cameras. That's what I use. Cannon has a driver you download and then plug the camera in USB. I'm very happy with the setup. And there's no menu overlay like with hdmi

LIES! HEATHEN!
The microphone makes a much bigger difference than the interface.
Nope, not true. The interface is extremely important. Latency!
@@cmdr-reflipd latency on an audio interface is important, but audio quality is so much more about the microphone. If the audio interface is affecting sounds quality anywhere near what the microphone is doing, that is the world's worst audio interface. I actually very much dislike the tone of the Midas preamps and a to d converters, but the microphone is still bigger.
@@amadensor yeah it does, but if your recording audio and it records a second late. It becomes very annoying, and Behringer audio interfaces do just that.
@@cmdr-reflipd From my experience, that is just not true. There's not a second of latency, especially not when using an Asio4All driver. You can easily get it down to 10 ms. Are there better interfaces? Absolutely, but the behringer one is a very good bang for the buck version and the latency is fine.
Also, most programs compensate for the latency. Usually latency only becomes an issue when monitoring

@@snow1337 The built-in pop filter is something I'm new to, but it's saved me the trouble of frankensteining one onto it (like I've done for my previous mics).
The adjustable sound profiles help whenever there is background noise that I want to tune out.
I don't intend on getting a mic arm (since I've got a cosy little space for the mic to stand in between my consoles), but I've heard from some streamer friends that the mount adapter works well, and fits onto their arms as intended.
The tap-to-mute thing is handy, though I've only ever had experience with clunky press-and-hold-to-mute microphones, so I can't really compare to others.
Oh, and the RGB is a nice touch. When looking through the internal pop filter, I think I see 16 total LEDs. 8 on top, 8 on bottom. The only con I have with the RGB is the fact that since there's a pretty hefty gap between the top and bottom, there's a small area in the dead middle where the light is less bright.
I found the fact that you have to plug in a Type-C into the back of the mic, as well as the Type-A into my PC, however, quite irritating. I wish the mic cable was simply built into the mic rather than having to be plugged in on both sides.
I think that, unless you already have a really high-end microphone that offers most of the comforts the Quadcast S provides, that this is worth its price. I've been using it since January of this year, and it's been an invaluable upgrade from my previous JLab Talk mic.
Overall: 8/10, would recommend. :)
@@SneakyFirefox5 Thanks so much for typing all this out! You really took your time for the reply and I appreciate it :)
2:46 That throwback to Tay Zonday! love it hhaha
Loved the video but I have a challenge idea that I think would be fun to make and watch. Would you consider building a watercooled PC using fittings to cover most if not all the distance the pipes would go.
Lol Linus recommending a bottom-of-the-barrel brand like Behringer shows how little research went into that part of the video. 🤦
Bruh dont comment if you dont know what you are talking about. Umc lineup of interfaces are just the best on their pricerange's. There is nothing bad about them.
I still use 404 daily at my studio just because there really isn't any reason to upgrade. If i want the best quality ever, i'm just going to rent a studio anyways.
@@Veetiful Haha ummm nope. Just because you dont know any better it doesnt mean that Behringer is a good deal 😄
I've used their soundcards and know exactly how bad they are (sound quality, preamps, driver support) and there are much much better solutions at its pricerange out there like anything from PreSonus, Focusrite or even RME.
I've been in the music production business for more than 20 years and everyone serious enough about audio will tell you the same thing to stay away from that cheapo Behringer brand.
If you are happy with your Behringer product then more power to you, but please dont fanboy-up them above their place in the audio world which is the rock-bottom. ;)
pls dont just boost in you EQ. Use the EQ to cut out bad sounding Frequences
I know right. Cut everything sub 50-100hz depending on how low your voice is. There is nothing there but garbage. Also for the love of god roll of the compressor. I don't know how they made an sm58 sound that crap.
Also, sm58 should be 10cm from your face. At least.
AT2020 has been my go to, got the advice from a radio dj who got into streaming. If you have a mixer with phantom power then the Audio Technica AT2020 will up your sound game 10 fold. Add a Yamaha MG10XU Mixer and your viewers will be blown away by your new sound setup.
Love the chapters bookmark and the detailed info. More of this please. Great work.
Question - would you recommend nvidia studio over obs if you have nvidia hardware?
"I'm a pacifist Canadian"
So basically just a Canadian. #NotAnInsult
Q: Why are there no Canadian snipers?
A: After they kill their target, they apologize and get shot by the enemy who hears them
@@circuitsandcigars1278 funny joke, but the current world record longest combat shot is held by canada, lol
Why are you using hashtags on youtube?
@@DiegoRomer0 well, because it was part of the joke but also UA-cam supports hashtags, so why wouldn't one use them?

Hey dad
Nah bro nahhh
Mmmmm, naaaah I just can’t
I use a dynamic mic (a Sennheiser e840) without a Audio Interface and just use a $7 Xlr to Usb cable. Obviously having a Audio Interface is better but if you already have a dynamic mic lying around and on a tight budget it works surprisingly well.
On the audio side I use a cheap USB microphone from Samson, it sounds pretty good and I don't have to worry about an audio interface, just plug and play!
Also if you have a RTX GPU, Nvidia Broadcast can fix bad background noise and has a cool webcam blur option as well!
Doesn't the original setup look and sound better in the comparison at the end? I like it way more.
Same here! The elgato must not have been setup properly, most certainly the camera. With the cheap light and phone, it just looked more warm.
ya, I scrolled to find your comment before putting this! the sound ok I could see an argument why it sounds "better" but the video is too cool and underexposed on the subject
I think the sound is terrible after the upgrade because of bad EQ and popping P's. I would not want to listen to that for any extended periods of time. The actual sound quality is better but it's ruined by bad setup and configuration.
