No terrible umpiring compares to the 1997 World Series . The Marlins won because Livan Hernandez was given an extra 8 inches outside the strike zone that were called strikes, not just a couple times , but throughout the game. Watch it on UA-cam.
Good video. There were bad calls on both sides this time that had a direct effect on the game. As a Dodgers fan I hated to see the should-have-been walk to Smith taken away, but I also really disliked that strike three call on Torres to end the inning. Get the calls right and let the players determine the outcome as they should.
I just do not understand what criteria they use for selecting umpires but in the World Series it only makes sense that only the very best and most highly rated umpires should be assigned. I am not an Evil Empire fan but I almost felt sorry for Torres when that pitch that was so high was called a strike at such a crucial time of the game. The players work extremely hard to get to the World Series and only the very best umpires assigned to these games is something that everybody should be able to count on.
Carlos Flores, who was behind the plate for game 1, is clearly a DEI plant. The announcers TWICE told us he was the 1st Venezuelan born umpire to do a World Series game. Umpires should be hired for their competency, not for diversity reasons.
As should everyone else! Like you know when I fly in a plane...I want the best pilot possible, not a DEI hire. Or how about President or in our case the VP of the USA! Why are there so many who want to put a DEI hire in charge of this Nation? I don't get it, but stupid is as stupid does!
@@mikeyoung9810 well, it would be nice if MLB would come clean and tell us how they arrive at their decision. Clearly it has nothing to do with regular season performance. One would think that out of a pool of 90 umpires, at least 1 of seven would be ranked in the top 15. Even if they are chosen by random generation, this borders on defying the odds of probabilities.
By continuing to allow the umpires to decide on the strike zone, baseball has decided to lose whatever fans that they have left. It's like a ref calling a field goal in football good, because it hit the goalpost, and the ref decided that's close enough.
@@ch1li597 So, if an umpire decides that the strike zone is 3 inches off the plate, that's okay ? But a ref decides that the goal post strike is close enough, what's the difference ? Both are defined, and baseball has decided the strike zone to be subjective to an umpires whim.
Yes, bag on Carlson for a poorly called Game 3, but Fletcher really rose to the occasion in Game 2. I was expecting much worse from him, but he only missed 4 called pitches the entire game, about half as many as an MLB average ump would've missed. He's no Perfect Pat Hoberg, but it was a great performance and far better than his auditor rank led me to expect
Yes that ball was high but there were questionable strikes against the Dodgers as well. They should just go with the strike zone overlay for ball calls. Keep the UPM for all the other stuff.
While going to the Wendelstedt umpire school in 94 the Umpire of the year for 93 was there talking to us and held up two baseballs in one hand and said two balls OFF the plate was a Major League strike. His reason was that a MLB player could hit a pitch that far off the plate. It's real sad when they don't even care what's written in the book and do as they please. Cool thing about my class was one guy made it all the way to the Majors, Jim Wolf.
I miss angel hernandez. He was so awful, we ignored all the other shitty umps... now that he's gone, it's more and more clear how horrible most of these guys are
Lux was safe AND Trevino was blocking the plate. Getting that wrong on review is just on another level of suck. The calls were terrible both ways on top of that, but if anybody got robbed it was the Dodgers.
Remember we’re playing IN New York, always a controversial call by the umps but having the review booth call Lux out is just the cherry on top. New York sucks!!!
I think he was blocking the plate but Lux still got his fingers on the plate. Everything comes down to perceptions and humans often disagree on what they see.
might as well bring Angel Hernandez back from retirement.... the World Series 3 was a joke. I do not like the Yankees, but I definitely sympathized with them! The commissioner is also a joke!!!
I've been saying this for years...since every umpire is different from one to another but, the strike zone remains the same...there should be an "automated computer calling balls and strikes" because human umpires just differ way too much. They use high tech in everything else...why not balls and strikes and GET IT RIGHT!"
This is why we MUST get robo umps or at the very least a challenge system for the batter. We didn’t have this option available before, but we do now, and it’s working well in AAA. These bad calls ruins the integrity and fairness of the game. A single missed strike or ball can completely change a game. We can’t have the freakin World Series being impacted by an umps missed call. It’s time we remove this human error variable that a player can’t do anything about no matter how hard they train
I'd say make it closer to tennis where a player can challenge the call and have it reviewed electronically. Each team has 3 challenges and if they are correct on their challenge then they get to reuse it.
I think what's UNACCEPTABLE in all caps is still complaining about umpires as if major league level players don't know they have to always play well enough to score runs outside of the bad calls. The dodgers had some bad calls and still put enough runs on the board to win. Yankees just haven't done it. It's a game after all and human error is part of it on the part of players coaches and umpires. Just accept that and it's a far more fun game to watch.
As a British guy I have never understood why the umpire does not stand behiing the pitcher and then he can see how low a ball is instead of looking over someions hsoulder and guessing!! We do that in cricket with the umpire standing at the bowlers end so he can decide if a ball,is a LBW or not. He could not do that standing behind the wicketkeeper (or catcher in baseball).
The players move all the time when the ball is in play and an umpire at that location would get in the way too often and be at risk for injury. The umpire at second has more time to react.
You would have to add another ump. An ump has to be at home plate for plays at the plate. He also has to be there to call foul tips and whether or not a bunt is fair or foul. Hit batter, balks, other stuff as well. The umpiring is really bad this series for some reason. Umpiring is an art form and a skill. Remember, the AVERAGE eyesight of a MLB player is 20/13. Many have eyesight better than that. Most umps have 20/20. With the advent of super def TV many fans complain about the calls. In the past major leaguers understood that their vision was better than the umps and protected the plate. They wouldn't take a pitch an inch off the plate hoping for a call that went their way from someone that had vision not in their class. Big time sluggers have freakish eyesight and can see things that we cannot, like if a baseball traveling at 140 FPS spinning at 2400 RPM has a backspin or a side spin.
While depicted as flat on tv, the reality is the strike zone has a lot of depth to it. A ball that starts off the plate and breaks inwards towards the strike zone can miss the front part of the plate but clip the back, making it a strike. A pitch can also clip the front part of the zone, curve out of the strike zone before it hits the back half, but should still also be called a strike. realistically, an umpire behind the pitcher would be too far away from the plate to get any sense of depth. Additionally, everything just looks smaller which could just lead to more mistakes. Standing behind the plate just gives you a better view (when done well) Jomboy Media put out a video a year or 2 ago titled "Umpire calls a perfect game in the world series." One thing he pointed out was how the umpire (Pat Hoberg) moved with the catcher. If the catcher shifted to the inside part of the plate, he followed him inside and lined up his sight directly down the inside of the plate. If the catcher was shifted outside he'd slide out with him, squaring his view with the outside edge. Pat sets up directing behind the catcher's should, his body squared with home plate. He is dynamic and puts himself in the best possible position to make a call. One trend I see with a lot of bad umpires is they are stiff and take on too steep of an angle. I can't stand watching some of these umpires stand clear behind the batter, frozen in place. They set themselves up with just about the worst possible view of the plate and don't see an issue with it. Imagine trying to call balls and strikes from the opposite batters box. Obviously you wouldn't expect to do a good job because the inside and outside parts of the plate are near indistinguishable from that view. These umpires that set up way the hell inside are just doing a slightly less bad version of that. I'm not sure what umpire school looks like or what they teach you, but it baffles me that squaring yourself up with the plate isn't one of the most basic fundamentals they teach
You notice they've made the strike zone they show on TV less visible? I think they did that to make umpires look less horrible. What they should do is make the strike zone light up, illuminate, whenever the ball touches it. Another thing that pisses me off is why home plate umpires stand, line up, on the inside/outside edge of the plate when calling balls and strikes. Why in the hell wouldn't you stand directly in the middle?
Kind of odd as that Umpire actually has a solid rating but was just a debacle last night. His Balls/Strikes calling ratio was, emphasis on "was", at 98.4% during the season but, wow, no idea wtf happened.
That umpire was rated 49th out of 90 so how do you consider him solidly rated? That's in the lower half. They use 6 umps so the top 6 should get the series with the next two in reserve.
90 umpires in total. Why not have umpires in the top 15 handle the World Series...are they too busy in during the playoffs?...Are they drinking margaritas on a beach? Technically the season's not done, maybe they should finish their still ongoing job?
I love watching hitters and pitchers fight for small advantages. Working the count is how hitters see better pitches, and working the count is how pitchers see worse swings. The inconsistency took some control from the players.
Exhibits 5,731,495 - 5,731,547 why we need an electronic strike zone. Everyone at home can call a better game than any umpire behind the plate. Get it done.
I’ll say it again as I have for over a decade, get rid of the umpires. They aren’t needed and only serve to make the game unfair and unwatchable. Time to move on and relegate the men in black to a footnote in baseball history, sort of like the spitball. Please, for the sake of all that is holy, get rid of these knuckleheads.
More much ado about nothing. Ted Williams once said that the actual strike zone is not what the rule book says it is, it's whatever that game's plate umpire says it is. That's not changed.
The muncy at bat was terrible calls . No replay. …lux at home ???replay at home the only one that showed it was the last one. To never replayed again. What is with the not showing the replays on the check swing. Getting like the nba. They show the replay ( maybe) 3 plays later. Integrity?????
Can’t believe how bad they are, I am not a fan of either team, just amazed at how easily they are fooled by the catchers movements that are so obvious.
All the more reason they need to use the 'strike box graphic' you see on your tv...put that shyt up on the jumbo screen and let it determine the pitch, easy as pie! Ump can still make all other calls at the plate like check swings, fould balls etc. Or use what some minor league teams have already implemented. The batter has 2 times during a gam where he can protest a called strike, the pitcher has the same they just can't both be done on the same pitch. Watched the Gwinnett Stripers (Braves Triple A) where this is implemented and it was a joy to watch. It took all of 3 or 4 seconds to accomplish and it only happened 4 times during the entire game. The batter felt a strike call was questionable, he taps on his helmet, umpired raises both hands and the 'strike box graphic' is quickly flashed on the big screen and the correct call re-instated. Getting calls right is a good thing.
Make a Rule - for check swings, if any portion of the bat crosses the plate during a check swing, it is a strike. If the bat does not cross the plate, it is not a strike. If the HP Ump can't tell, the 1st or 3rd base Ump will make the call depending on left/right hand hitter.
Boy as a Yankee fan, that umpire who called game 1 was atrocious. He made horrible calls all night on both teams. I've been watching baseball for 18 years and it was the first time I couldn't locate the strike zone. Although we lost, I was just happy the outcome of the game was decided by a player and not that home plate umpire!
I can’t believe major league catchers Frame pitches,it’s so little league. Also hard to believe umpires fall for it. If I was a home plate umpire,I would tell the catcher Do Not frame a pitch . If you do I’m calling it a ball.
As a former high school baseball umpire, this was a display of pure incompetence and these umpires had NO reason to be selected for this World Series! It was a joke of a game, no matter who won. Manfred, once again, made a BIG DOOFUS move; but we know the result of the game, now let's see how the rest of this series ends up.
Manfred: - Put the worst umps in the World Series - Poor umpiring in the World Series outrages fans - Manfred announces robo umps calling balls and strikes - Fans accept it due to poor umpiring in WS - MLB can pay umpires less
I've said this all along. The top eight (8) ranked umpires should be selected for the World Series. PERIOD!!! If they're rated and ranked, which they are, the reward should be the WORLD SERIES. These umps shouldn't have even been awarded post series games, let alone the biggest games of all. The behind the plate umpiring has been terrible in all three games so far. The strike zone is the area across home plate between the letters and the knees. Secondly, some of these catchers have made an art out of moving the glove so violently into the strike zone after it's been caught out of the zone, that this needs to be looked at and criticized as well. FIX THIS NOW!!!As an aside, this was NOT the "story of this game" but it does provide a serious question as to the proficiency of the ball and strike umpiring. There are those that would argue to the "personal" aspect of umpiring, but they need to be better or they'll be replaced with robotics. At least when it comes to ball and strike calls.
What if they are in the top eight but not for calling balls and strikes? It's not all they do. There are many ways to change a baseball game with a bad call.
@@mikeyoung9810 Eight (8) umpires are avai8lable for each WS game. Six on the field and two back ups. They rotate each game so the same umpire gets a different assignment for each game.
Framing pitches in order for them to be called strikes has got to be one of the most ridiculous calls in sports. Why can't wide receivers in football, who catch a pass with one foot inbounds and one foot on the sideline quickly step back onto the playing field in order to make it a valid catch? Because he was out of bounds. Pitches thrown outside of the strike zone should never be called a strike because of some sleight of hand "framing" bullsh!t performed by a catcher. Ridiculous.
Combine the umpiring and the Dodger manager was a recipe for disaster, and man did they cook! Doc is the worst manager in MLB! How can a team have a Billion $$$ payroll, and a $10 manager? DOC is incompetent, I have to listen to the radio, as seeing Doc get outmanaged by Boone is just heartbreaking. Dodger's ownership are pouring $$ down the drain by keeping him.
I don't understand how it will take over a year for the robo umps to be ready for the major leagues when the same data is already shown by the broadcasters within seconds.
Tip of the iceberg. Millions of observers (fans, journalists, peers, etc.) certainly have an opinion as well. Loads of questionable calls, even at the plate. Absolutely liked your visual examples. Thank you for sharing!
Sorry, but baseball isn't fun to watch anymore. I used to love to play it, AND watch too. But now, it is a roll of the dice. My major beef? The so-called 'Framing' of a pitch by the catchers. Even little leaguers emulate their 'hero's'. I always thought of it as cheating. When I umpired years ago for little league, I told the catchers that if I saw them doing it, I was calling the pitch a ball. Guess what? They stopped.
@bobbymoss6160, not a miracle. He pitched very well against the Mets and this was more progression. He got 6 swing and miss strike outs. That says a lot. Both sides got calls.
I really don't understand why the radar (Robo-Ump) is not used to make the official call, the ump can still hang behind the plate in case of failure and for general game control. Imagine if we still got diverted from airports cuz we couldn't see the runway from 10 miles out & 3,000 ft & refused to use the technology; we overcame that by the mid 1950's.
It’s crazy how Fox tries to cover up the missed balls and strikes calls by making the box almost invisible. I watched about 100 Dodgers games, and their channel shows the box clearly. Very rarely did any umpire go more than 2 hitters without making a mistake. People who fight the ABS system are crazy.
Why is the MLB STILL not using automated strike zones? That would completely prevent bad calling like this and also any possible arguing from players or managers, as if the call is made via automated zone then it's confirmed by computer, which is far more accurate than human judgment.

They used to use the best of the best umps in the series. Today we would be seeing Angel H if he didn’t disappear.
2024 we have advanced so much in technology and we still refuse to use them in sports.
With Gambling legal now how do u know they are not Throwing Games Pete Rose should be let in the Baseball Hall of Fame God Rest his Soul he is gone now let him in no one will ever Brake his Record .......
No terrible umpiring compares to the 1997 World Series . The Marlins won because Livan Hernandez was given an extra 8 inches outside the strike zone that were called strikes, not just a couple times , but throughout the game. Watch it on UA-cam.
Agree, none of these are as bad as Eric Gregg's calls.
What’s unacceptable is how little fight the Yankees show
Good pitching often can shut down a team and they will then get more defensive and careful. Powerhitters tend to be very streaky.
The games are rigged for the dodgers to win..
It's been bad throughout the entire playoffs
The errors by the umpires were clearly visible even on TV.
Using this logic they all must be plants for one reason or another since they weren't the best at calling balls and strikes.
He is horrible....
Enough of your DEI BS. Does that make all the white umpires that are horrible DEI, too? Racism is just stupidity by uneducated morons.
By continuing to allow the umpires to decide on the strike zone, baseball has decided to lose whatever fans that they have left. It's like a ref calling a field goal in football good, because it hit the goalpost, and the ref decided that's close enough.
Horrible analogy tbh
@@ch1li597 So, if an umpire decides that the strike zone is 3 inches off the plate, that's okay ? But a ref decides that the goal post strike is close enough, what's the difference ? Both are defined, and baseball has decided the strike zone to be subjective to an umpires whim.
As a dodgers fan I agree. I'd rather watch a fair game than my team win it all with questionable calls.
@rmc310, so you're saying the Dodgers won because of questionable calls?
@@markanderson7833 No he is saying the Yanks can't hit and are not as good as any of the National teams that made the playoffs
Both teams have been hosed in this series
@@thefishhobbyist5478. not sure how you came to that conclusion. LOL
The BIGGEST issue is people thinking the box on the screen on the Fox broadcast is the actual strike zone.
Then what does the box represent?
@@jakerittlinger440 The box on the screen was off from the actual strike zone. On the Torres strikeout, the top of the zone was only to his belt.
Yes that ball was high but there were questionable strikes against the Dodgers as well. They should just go with the strike zone overlay for ball calls. Keep the UPM for all the other stuff.
It wasn't high. The Fox zone isn't accurate. The Baseball Savant one is. And they had it as a strike
That Will Smith call made me rage. It really was hard to watch. At least both teams got screwed.
I'm wondering if the umpire's union has anything to do with this? I would think so.
They should get rid of the new MLB rules
Sometimes I wonder if those bad calls are a little on purpose just to try to keep any of the games from becoming blowouts.
A umpire that can be duped by a “ framed” pitch should be fired immediately…same for the catcher doing it
Exactly, Framing is so Bush league.
MLB is killing baseball
The WS umpires are a joke!
Use electronic balls & strikes system. Very accurate…
Why are we using humans to judge strikes and balls?
Because of Unions😊
Easier to bribe
Because like all the other unions, they're afraid of being replaced by AI, which is more efficient than humans.
Because the human is still more accurate than the computer. That data is out there to consume
Then we wouldn’t be able to get upset and excited at a missed call.
Game 1 balls and strikes was pathetic. The zone shifted from one side of the plate to the other each inning.
Putting a picture of Joe West when listing what a good ump should do seems wrong.
Joe West was among the worst, and that goes double when he was union boss.
Always a way of defending or accusing performance is blaming umpires.
the robots are coming…umpires have no one to blame but themselves…the question will be how many challenges does a batter get…
This is why we MUST get robo umps or at the very least a challenge system for the batter.
Capital L take
As a British guy I have never understood why the umpire does not stand behiing the pitcher and then he can see how low a ball is instead of looking over someions hsoulder and guessing!!
Standing behind the plate just gives you a better view (when done well)
Jomboy Media put out a video a year or 2 ago titled "Umpire calls a perfect game in the world series." One thing he pointed out was how the umpire (Pat Hoberg) moved with the catcher.
Umpire behind the P would be a HUGE distraction to the batter. The release point of the P would be almost impossible for a batter to find/gauge.
@@tonylauria8496 No way. I am looking at RateUmp right now and it says 98.4. Where did you find that data?
90 umpires in total. Why not have umpires in the top 15 handle the World Series...are they too busy in during the playoffs?...Are they drinking margaritas on a beach? Technically the season's not done, maybe they should finish their still ongoing job?
I love watching hitters and pitchers fight for small advantages. Working the count is how hitters see better pitches, and working the count is how pitchers see worse swings. The inconsistency took some control from the players.
And people like Rizzo crowding the plate making it near impossible to pitch inside without hitting him.
The umps have been terrible this postseason, I watched majority of the postseason games, and majority of the strike zone was expanded
Exhibits 5,731,495 - 5,731,547 why we need an electronic strike zone. Everyone at home can call a better game than any umpire behind the plate. Get it done.
As a dodger fan there was two calls that were really bad for the Yankees but I do hope I live long enough to see MLB use digital empires
This video is definitely from a Yankee fan! Boo hoo the Yankees lost because of the umpire! Seriously? Sad… tears…. Booo hooo.
The inconsistency was unbelievable!
Vegas is always consistent
Integrity?????
how about the lux-home base call? It was clear he was safe, they challenged it and failed. This isn't just on umpires
I knew they were testing robo umps but didn't know about this. Glad to hear it.
As a Dodgers fans…Carlson was horrible…that 3rd strike on Torres was a ball, way high…and Lux was safe, the catcher blocked the plate
And Will Smith should have been walked and an RBI.
I thought I was the only one watching this person behind the home plate make these nasty calls.
This should be all over the place, of course it isnt tho.
Hell I'm a Dodger fan the umping was atrocious period. Both teams had rallies killed by horrid call. This guy should never ump behind the dish again.
There was an umpire back in the 70s that told catchers, if you frame the pitch, it'll be a ball no matter what. That stopped that crap real fast.
Home plate umps should not be allowed to call balls and strikes anymore. Leave it up to technology.
Make a Rule - for check swings, if any portion of the bat crosses the plate during a check swing, it is a strike. If the bat does not cross the plate, it is not a strike. If the HP Ump can't tell, the 1st or 3rd base Ump will make the call depending on left/right hand hitter.
Games 1 & 3 were atrocious 🤦♂️
That Hawkeye system is sorely needed
Manfred needs to do better??? This IS Manfred doing better! VEGAS is running the show! WAKE UP FOOLS! 😂
I’m glad people are calling out these umpires
Boy as a Yankee fan, that umpire who called game 1 was atrocious. He made horrible calls all night on both teams. I've been watching baseball for 18 years and it was the first time I couldn't locate the strike zone. Although we lost, I was just happy the outcome of the game was decided by a player and not that home plate umpire!
I can’t believe major league catchers Frame pitches,it’s so little league. Also hard to believe umpires fall for it. If I was a home plate umpire,I would tell the catcher Do Not frame a pitch . If you do I’m calling it a ball.
I agree a little league play by catchers and there falling for lol 😆
As a former high school baseball umpire, this was a display of pure incompetence and these umpires had NO reason to be selected for this World Series! It was a joke of a game, no matter who won. Manfred, once again, made a BIG DOOFUS move; but we know the result of the game, now let's see how the rest of this series ends up.
Manfred:
- Put the worst umps in the World Series
- Poor umpiring in the World Series outrages fans
- Manfred announces robo umps calling balls and strikes
- Fans accept it due to poor umpiring in WS
- MLB can pay umpires less
Time for robot umpires for balls and strikes
Ridiculous.
They have the digital strike zone. The MLB should somehow implement it into the game.
The MLB umpire union is the problem. Being selected to umpire the most important games of the season should be performance based.
It's obviously not.
Im a Dodgers fan and i got to say that umpire had it out for the Yankees.
I’m a Yankees fan but they don’t play good enough to win and it shows but yes the officiating is horrendous
Mark is an extremely batter friendly Ump. It's a miracle Buehler pitched a gem against Yanks.
@bobbymoss6160, not a miracle. He pitched very well against the Mets and this was more progression. He got 6 swing and miss strike outs. That says a lot. Both sides got calls.
Time for electronic home plate balls and strikes. The tech is there Use it!
