  • How Elon Musk Learnt To Code
In this video I share the story of how Elon Musk learnt to code and how it has been one of the fundamentals that has helped him build some of the most successful companies in the world.

It's the ability to take action and build something without being dependent on others' support or approval.

I also really relate to Elons journey. We got a ZX Spectrum in the 80s through which I taught myself using the manuals and the coding magazines Basic and Z80 assembler. Built my own printer driver in Z80 assembler when I was 15. Gained a degree in Physics but then started a career in Software Engineering in the 90s. Now I am a successful digital architect but software and digital engineering is still the red thread through my career. I'm no Elon Musk but that digital thread has served me very well throughout my career.

hi, do you think getting a double major in physics and computer science or comp engineering is necessary? I really want to learn both of them but im also unsure about what if it gets hard and unnecessary

My story is just like the story of Elon Musk. I learnt to code when I was 11 years old in my father's laptop. From my childhood I was obsessed with technology and software. And Just how Elon made $500 when was 13 I made $50 by selling websites in my 12

As somebody who also got into software development through gaming, I found Elon’s coding journey to be very relatable. Thanks for the vid!

he never got far as a coder, he's great at sell8mg stuff though, impressive, but not as a coder

Although he didn't have google when creating the game, you have to remember his father was a software engineer and could've assisted him in stuff he didn't when starting to code.

You don't need help to make simple games like what he made. You just need basic intelligence and enough desire that you don't give up too quickly.
No doubt lots of 10 yos and such have made games. His difference (such as it is) is in that he managed to sell his. Even if it was for $500.

“While Musk had excelled as a self-taught coder, his skills weren’t nearly as polished as those of the new hires. They took one look at Zip2’s code and began rewriting the vast majority of the software. Musk bristled at some of their changes, but the computer scientists needed just a fraction of the lines of code that Musk used to get their jobs done. They had a knack for dividing software projects into chunks that could be altered and refined whereas Musk fell into the classic self-taught coder trap of writing what developers call hairballs-big, monolithic hunks of code that could go berserk for mysterious reasons. ” Fron this book: Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future

It's not that simple. When you're building a startup quickly with limited funds, the main thing you need to do is make things work... Fast.
And you only refactor when things are getting in your way and slowing you down.
When you start building a new startup, you don't yet really know what you're going to build, so you can't properly plan for it.
And if you do try to build "amazing software" early on, you're most likely just over-architecting and adding things you'll never need.
Rewrites some time down the line are completely normal. By then you largely know what you need so you can build software that does what the old software did more efficiently.
That's mostly for scaling, and to make it easier to work together with other developers.

@@Leto2ndAtreides The paragraph specifically said that "his (Elon's) skills weren’t nearly as polished as those of the new hires (computer scientists)". You're trying to explain Elon's `bad` code by giving some generic startup situation where programmers have to rush stuff but the problem with that is do you even know if Elon's actually rushing when he made that code. You're assuming he rushed that code simply because Elon's in a startup. The paragraph also mentioned that "Musk bristled at some of their changes". Why would Elon bristled at some of their changes if those changes are improvements and that Elon knew his code is not optimal because he rushed it? My guess is Elon thought his code was good and his ego got bruised a bit when other professionals produced a better code than his.

When you talk to people just try to remember when you were a child and didn't know the right words, how people used to help you with words and give little instructions here and there. Mostly your parents but don't worry, most people are probably willing to help with your word usage so keep going with basic child level English and practice it on people. You will get way better. Have one friend that you talk to and spend time with who knows English as a first language. Your typing English is perfect!
