I JUST finished Frank McCourt's book, "T'is" (1999). It picks up where Angela's Ashes ends, with Frank coming to NYC and eventually becoming an inner city high school teacher. I listened to the audio book, Frank narrates it himself, and it's brilliant. I know without a doubt that he wouldn't hesitate to give Conan a good tongue-lashing. He was the real deal. Walked the walk, talked the talk.
For anyone who hasn’t seen it, look up the video of frank McCourt having an argument with an audience member on a talk show live on Irish state television in the 1990s. It’s gold. Also, comedian Francis Higgins does a word for word re-enactment of the altercation in an old tunnel. It’s equal parts hilarious and surreal.
I was famous, on a micro- (actually a nano-) level, for about a week, after being interviewed on the local news for my reaction to a grocery store strike ending. People recognized me, and quoted my soundbite back to me, "It's great that things are normal now," and one or two women I didn't know kind of smiled at me. It was fun but weird. I think as an actual famous person, I'd be one of those hated complainers.
I think this is a toxic attitude. Like, the idea that people can't be having a hard time, or express that, simply because there are other people who are having what some would call a harder time seems to ignore how people work. People perceive things from their relative positions. And being able to feel and communicate your emotions in a healthy way, rather than repress them, tends to be better for people's mental health in the long run.
As much as I regret being one of those "there's a name for that fallacy" Internet comments, this one's called the fallacy of relative privation. There's always worse problems in the world than what any particular person is dealing with, but that doesn't mean only the worst possible problem you can have is valid. At its worst, it's used to defer social progress, in the sense that e.g. gender/race/class inequality are trivialized because there's violence in the Middle East. Multiple things can be bad at the same time; being against animal cruelty doesn't mean you support nuclear weapons proliferation.
Angela’s Ashes was fiction…his mother called BS on it. A lot other people in Limerick called BS on it too. There was a case taken that was later dropped against the McCourts.
@@terri6854 She just finds Conan very funny, and rarely plays up for the camera from what I've (and Conan's) seen. Deep laughter is also the hardest emotion to fake convincingly.
I think when you consider the "Maslow Hierarchy of Needs" it's clear to me that everyone is struggling within the context of that elevated set of needs. If you're fighting for food and clean water, that is your central struggle. If you're an entry level employee and you want to move into managements or ownership, that is your elevated struggle. They're both valid, just because one is perceived as more "dire" doesn't change the human element of perception and just different contexts for existing as a human being. We're all doing far better than half the European population dying from the Plague in the Middle Ages. I'm not bringing that up every time someone says it's cold in the room 😂
The point is that you should try to have perspective and step outside of yourself from time to time. Not getting narcissistically wrapped up in your own life with no self awareness of how you come across to others.
It's human nature to complain. You can fully appreciate what you have and how much better off you are than many others, but in the 'heat of the moment' we're going to complain about things that might be fairly trivial now and then. It's absurd to think that nobody should ever complain from time to time. It's an outlet for life's frustrations, as trivial as they might seem or be. People need to stop complaining about other's complaints! :)
No, I disagree. I think Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a good model and I agree that there are different struggles in different rungs of the pyramid, but "perceived as more dire".. no... IS more dire. If you are a week away from homelessness, work day to day or week to week just for shelter and food, and have to work nutty hours, or rough jobs to do that, and you're maybe sharing a place with a big group of strangers/roommates with cockroaches in a bad neighborhood... sorry that is worse than a person who is living in warmth, safety, cleanliness and comfort, and if they feel like it can take a week off to reflect or to do yoga, and never has to worry about food, and can have good nutrition and all that, but is struggling to decide what their next business they'll start will be with all their disposable income... yeah... I'll make an objective claim here that one situation is more dire.
I love seeing the pics Conan takes at the end next to his guests. It always looks like Conan could eat 3 or 4 of them alive. He's such a giant! Lol! That said, waiting for more "YOU." Such a great show!
Everything has a cost and a consequence. It is about living intentionally, not taking what one has for granted and having a perspective that allows gratitude.
You should be honored that you were scolded by an older Irish man that had seen some tougher shite than you. LOL! I am Irish and was blessed to have an older Scottish Neighbor in my life. I work hard, and have been through some things in life, but that old man could work circles around me! :) He set the bar! Nothing too tough! ;)
Although the late Jim Kemy once said Angela's Ashes was "an accurate description of the way things were in the Limerick of their mutual youth", we should remember he was a friend of McCourt, so his opinion can not be fully trusted.
