    I caught sawmill sickness with a chainsaw mill from Sweden , very good , noisy and too much effort as I get older , covid and heart surgery. Our workshop is 30ft x 16ft and is now half full of , yes , a HM130 MAX , trailer and extension. It is huge which should not have come as a surprise but OMG. We have excavated a new pad for it , have temporary covers and the first sawings will go to building a permanent shed. Sawing with Sandy is our 'go to' for 'how to' so many thanks for your videos, especially the build ones with page numbers. Will let you know when we get to actually cutting . Lloyd , West Wales.

    I just spent 12 hours logging, splitting and hauling firewood. Put aside a few nice saw logs too. I'm beat tired but keeping my eyes open a little longer to watch you do what we both love to do.
    Best regards from the Northeast Kingdom!

    Howdy Sandy- another great video! It’s always enjoyable to watch someone using their Woodland Mills sawmill even though I have my own. We don’t have the snow but we’re getting the rain here in Arkansas. Hope you have a great weekend. Keep up the good work. God bless

    Amazing how much vibration is actually going on.
    Watching the Lazer really makes that apparent.
    I've got an old Norwood mill across the river in MN USA.
    Like your dogs too.
    Mine are the old screw type. Need to change them out some day.

      Sure is some vibrations for sure. I'd imagine since the engine is mounted right ot the steel without any rubber mounts or aything. Great to hear about the Norwood. Bet that things treated ya well making nice lumber over the years.

      @@sawingwithsandy the Norwood has been a good mill.
      If I was going to complain about anything it would be the Honda twin engine. It's a little cold blooded.
      I like the way your saw starts in the cold.

    Good for you Sandy, I am so glad you have sawmill sickness. I have chicken sickness, I breed purebred chickens. It is something I love (since I was a kid). I pretend that I will make some money one day from it, but I just keep spending money on coops and other upgrades. Yes I am sick but happy. We all need something that we enjoy. I love the way you care for your forest. You try not to waste any lumber products or trees. Best wishes!

    Hi Sandy great videos, I ran a woodmizer at our yard in pemberton bc, and we always used a to have the bark removed ASAP like you said but also, we brushed the line where the blade entered the log with a chain saw so if there was a Stone or san d on that side the blade didn’t have to push it through the log and get damaged, also, cedar seemed to need the most lubrication, it’s like the tree pulled dirt into itself while it grew. Dear needs the most water when milling.

    Hello Mr. Sandy, Everything can be rocket science if you overlook the simplicity of it, You have become accomplished enough at this you consider it simple, but it took you several logs, several attempts at nailing procedure before it became easier, I have been here for a while watching you grow, improve, and acquire the equipment needed, YOU have done well, my Nephew made your 3 pt hitch weight for his tractor, he swears by it, his tractor actually moves now instead of spinning wheels half the time. or nose dive when the front loader is loaded.

    Hello Sandy. That grapple is a sure way of controlling a log to put on the rack for sawing. If you find yourself using the forks and have a log that has not been placed on the rack, cradle the log, forks all the way back, lower the log over and onto the rack and tip the forks down. Perhaps the squirrels would like a place similar to the sawmill where they like to hide the pinecones. "If you build it, they will come". Have good days!

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  2 роки тому +1

      That method with the forks tipped back is a good method for sure. I'm hoping the squirrels start helping move lumber at the very least haha

      If you can find an old fan belt, it can be used to practice folding it into a smaller circle. Putting a half turn in one end will start the process. There will be less possibility for an injury and that practice will make it easier when using gloves on a blade. Have good days!

    Hi again Sandy!
    I was wondering if you noticed, (besides the obvious height difference, and portability!) if there any advantages (or disadvantages) between the stationary and woodlander mills?!
    Do you find yourself checking the level of the trailer deck more often!
    what do you use as a base for the trailer jacks? (I would think you would have the same problem as your first mill set up, during the freeze/thaw cycles!)

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  2 роки тому +1

      I don't regularly check the level of the sawmill on the trailer as I find the sawmill will tell me if it's too far off level as it will roll away on me. I don't find it settles much at all except for when I"m on soft ground. I like the height on the trailer for working a bit more than the older one on the ground. Only thing I don't like as much is loading the logs from the opposite side that I walk on.

    Good Morning and have a nice Monday morning. @Sandy: May I ask you a question. Looking at your videos is see that your saw-head is perfectly smooth and stabile (beside shakes from the engine). I own the same saw and last time I was cutting a 65cm walnut log for some reason it started shaking and wiggling in the direction of the blade during the cut - orthogonal to the forward movement of the the saw-head. Changed the speed of cutting etc... no real effect on that. Checked the tightness of everything - seems to be so. Any advise? Did you face these movements on our saw? Thx.

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  2 роки тому

      Hi Arnold. Only thing I can think of is the blade could be getting dull. Otherwise there is some shims on the vertical steel posts that can be adjusted to prevent the shaking. I don't recall the movements you mentioned.

    I haven't bit the bullet yet in buying the 130max. I'm still working out where I want to layout everything. So I watch A LOT of your videos! So I still have a lot of questions.
    1) If you had it to do over again, would you get the extention up front to lengthen the trailer to cut 16 foot logs?
    2) How big would you build the shed for the mill? I'm thinking about 12' x 25'. What dimensions do you suggest?
    3) I see that when you built your trailer you set the head to cut from tail to tongue of the trailer. Can the head be placed in reverse so it would cut from tongue to tail thus throwing the saw dust to the other side?
    4) Now that you have the mill on a trailer would you or have you ever gone on location to saw up someone's down tree. i.e. custom sawing at their location. I realize there would be problems getting the log up on the mill but with ramps and winches it could be done. And at what price?
    Just a couple of questions I keep coming up with!!

      Great questions. I think the extension would be great to have right from the start so it could be installed right when I did the initial assembly. I like the trailer and think its great for going around the property or even to someone else's property to mill. I think I'd still get that in the future for those reasons. Plus nice to be able to move the trailer to clean under the sawmill from time to time. You could rotate the sawig directly around if you would for sure. I think the dimensions of my last sawmill shed were quite good at 20' long by 10'. Hope that helps and thanks again for coming along for the tour

    Lookin good Sandy- you have snow! Better then mud which is what I have been dealing with up till yesterday. I noticed when you do your second cut that you flip your log to the opposite side instead of 90 degrees … is there a particular reason you do it this way? I have done it this way as well in the past but find I don’t always get a square cant- not sure why exactly - seems to come out better for me when I flip 90 degrees at a time.

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  2 роки тому +1

      The mud sure can be a headache . It’s been warm then cold then warm then cold here lately. I like to flip the log 180 I keep the log flat on the bunks in hopes of getting a steady log to cut a parallel side

    • @sawingwithsandy

      Up until recently I cut true dimension 2"x4" but recently started cutting 1.5" x 4" which isn't quite the same but the 1.5" is to allow for easy use of things like joist hangers

    Hi Sandy. I'm sure you've been asked these questions before, but how many hectares/acres is your woodlot and are you replanting with the idea of maintaining future harvest or letting nature take its course?

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Dallas, this red pine area I harvest mostly from is about 12-15 acres I figure. I’ll thin the woodlot then consider allowing for natural regrowth

    Last summer I hired a young man to bring his portable sawmill to my property to mill up a number of logs for me. One day I watched as he changed a blade and realised he was doing it differently than almost everyone I've seen on UA-cam. He brought the carriage to the end of the track so that he had open access to both sides of the band wheels without having to climb over anything. Certainly seemed much easier and quicker than doing it from the operator end of the track.

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  2 роки тому

      That would work for sure. Reason I don’t like doing that is I find the sawmill rolls away from me as I put pressure on the odd time to put the blade on and free spin the wheels

    Looks like you upgraded your laser mounts from the previous deployment? Did you wire these into your key switch (so that you don't need to separately turn them on/off)?

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  2 роки тому

      Hi Paul, I did change out the laser mounts for something more solid just to keep things steady. I've got a video out in the playlist if you want to check out the install. I installed it on a separate switch as I often walk in front of the sawmill to rotate the log and like to turn off the lasers so I don't accidentally get blinded by them

    Does your laser guide work in the cold? Never mind LOL I just saw it. But dimensional when customers request or we are working on repairs of a store bought structure.

    Does snow present any problems during the cutting process?

    • @sawingwithsandy

      I actually find it helps to make the cuts even faster as the ice in the log helps the blade stay cool and the snow keeps dirt off the bark
