I was in this commercial as an extra. I pushed car at end. I was in 11 th grade. It paid for my first car. $5,500 for 6 days work was a lot of money in 11th grade in 1985. Was a really cool experience. Glen Frey was a great guy played hackie sack with the kids and Ridley Scott actually directed this. Also a nice guy. Pretty neat experience.
GREAT story & love to hear more. I was 20 yrs old back then & desperately in love with both Don & Glenn (like most were). You actually met Glenn? Eagles are soundtrack to my life. I cried when Glenn died & then I found out that he had Rheumatoid Arthritis & UC, which I've had 18 yrs. Did you meet Don? So glad you got $$ for it. Six days for a 2 minute commercial! Must have been awesome 😎
@nancyglem hey Nancy, sorry about what you're dealing with RA. research Carnivore diet. Lots of people are seeing incredible improvements. Check out Carnivore Dr. Shawn Baker and auto immune diseases. Yes, met both Glenn and Don and was absolutely one of the coolest experiences ever.
@@deanmarten Thanks Dean. I'll check that diet out. Diet is key most definitely & I'll check out your recommendation. I have Celiac so eating gluten free has helped my joints too
I worked in this commercial s Glenn Frey's stand-in double. It was a great 10 days of shooting. Ridley was a great director to work for. Really down to earth. HE began directing commercials way before he went into movies.. This was a 5 minute or so commercial. The dance was shot in Miami High gym and all the kids were high school age. DJ's stand-in double burned out the clutch on the Ferrari. I got $3500 for 10 days of great fun. Anyone have the full 5 minute version?
I worked on the production of this commercial, most of which was shot in the Greenwich Studios (Ivan Tors) in North Miami. The really strange thing is that Don Johnson (with whom I also worked on his music video epic "Heartbeat") was NOT a nice guy, played the celebrity role by being a jerk mostly. On the other hand, Glenn Frey was a super nice guy, pleasant to the crew, generous with his time and TWENTY TIME RICHER than Don Johnson ever became.
I remember this commercial from 1985. I was a little child at that time. It is Glenn Frey's song and being his commercial. It was sad that he pass away.Rest in peace. (1948-2016)
The 80’s did everything better. Especially commercials and this one proves that beyond all doubt…..So much optimism and style. Today’s commercials just don’t compare.
For those of you wondering about the car --- it *is* a Ferrari, but it's not the Testarossa that would eventually be used, nor is it a 308, nor is it the ultra-rare 288 GTO, and certainly not even a "replica" 365 GTS/4 ("Daytona"). It is a BB 512 "Boxer Berlinetta. Odd, since that particular car was never used on "Miami Vice".
I only just read about this ad in an old Rolling Stone I was reading through the other night. Can't believe I didn't know about it! Much better than the first Pepsi ad Ridley Scott did (with the kid and the UFO)! 😺👍🏻
I don't think the Dolphins would agree it's fun at all. I believe they lost to the Chicago Bears by around 40 points. That was the renowned Iron Curtain defense.
RIP Glenn Frey 😢🙏🏻 he's the best and greatest singer, songwriter and actor, he will truly missed and always be remembered, I love his solo and Eagles songs my prayers are with his family & Friends
I was a young teenage girl when this commercial was on TV back in 1985, and I remember it well. One night, my Mom and Dad and I were all watching TV together, and this commercial came on. I remember saying something about Don Johnson being cute, and I accidentally said his name all backwards. I meant to say "Don Johnson," and it came out "John Donson!" 😂 We all got a good laugh out of that! I'm such a dork!
Sorry for the multiple posts. It has been a long time since the shoot. Don and Glenn each received one million for the shoot. DJ acted like a stuckup asshole and Ridley commented how he forgot the humble origins he came from. When we were setting up the lights and cameras in the sound stage, we kept the windows closed and it got over 100 degrees in there. Then when Ridley called for the first team (DJ and Glenn), they sweated their ass off. Ridley chuckled. So did we. DJ was difficult.
why is Philip MIchael Thomas not in this commercial?? if it really is to be a Miami Vice commercial....crockett, glen frey singing, the ferrari, the pastel clothes and linen....but no Philip Michael Thomas???
For years I thought this song was written specifically for the ad, but yesterday I heard the original for the first time (on a Catholic rock radio show, no less!)
This commercial is alright, but it would've been a classic if it would've included Philip Michael Thomas. Come on, both Tubbs and Crockett made Miami Vice (and Edward James Olmos too lol)
That would not have been possible the song played in the background was'nt released until november of 1985 so this probably would've been a Super Bowl XX commercial unless You Belong to The City was released in late 1984 and did'nt chart until late the following year.
Ironically Don Johnson would endorse Diet Coke just 4 yrs later in a Superbowl commercial ...Jan . 89 actually Miami Vice would film its last episode a couple weeks later

To one of the greatest song writers and musicians of my generation!R.I.P. Glenn Frey
the "greatest" selling sugarwater to idiots...

I remember you. I spoke to you. Hope you're still around.
How I love Miami Vice and the 80's
I looked it up and noticed Miami Vice didn't win any Emmy awards.
Just goes to show much Sonny Crockett hated coke dealers! He only drank Pepsi!
HAHAHA this was epic!

I was in the video as well and you're exactly correct.

1980-89 It was a really excellent time.
I'm in love with the cinematography. So good.
Rip to a great Singer & songwriter Glen Frey we still miss you
0:43 - 0:51 - I laughed my butt off at Don Johnson's sarcastic reply ("MY SONG!")
Me2
RIP Glenn Frey :(

Anything with Don Johnson in it is instantly aced :D
It’s the 80s! Padded shoulders, big hair and leg warmers!
Commercials were so awesome to watch in the 80s, epically the car commercials.
This commercial is kinda offensive, though. All the heterosexuals. Hardly any diversity. Maybe this video should have warning before we watch it.
"Not for air"? Not anymore, dude!
This is great! Thanks for posting
Apparently Phillip Michael Thomas had a prior commitment with Sunkist so he couldn't appear in this commercial.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
bro u still alive
I sure wish it was in HD!
I only just read about this ad in an old Rolling Stone I was reading through the other night. Can't believe I didn't know about it! Much better than the first Pepsi ad Ridley Scott did (with the kid and the UFO)! 😺👍🏻
I remember first seeing this commercial during the Grammys in 1986 in the full version then months after that the edited versions
THANK YOU !!! im watching LIVE AID yesterday and today
Thank god for the 80s....
Thanks for the extendend clip. I didn't know there was another clip, and I much prefer the extended clip over the 30 second commercial.
Fast Fact: This commercial debuted during Super Bowl XIX, the last time the Miami Dolphins played in the Super Bowl.
I don't think the Dolphins would agree it's fun at all. I believe they lost to the Chicago Bears by around 40 points. That was the renowned Iron Curtain defense.
Still my all time fav Superbowl ...Cool Joe Montana....just the name was cool..not to mention the player and the team
That was a great commercial - I've never seen it before.
RIP Glenn Frey 😢🙏🏻 he's the best and greatest singer, songwriter and actor, he will truly missed and always be remembered, I love his solo and Eagles songs my prayers are with his family & Friends
R.I.P. Glenn.
GREAT! THX for posting
rest in peace Glenn Frey

Classic 80's!!!
Actually, the series voted as the best in the 80s was Magnum PI, starring Tom Magnum.
i love this commercial!!
What's so sad is that according to info I found, this was directed by Ridley Scott director of Alien, Legend and Blade Runner.
Well thank you Mr.Froyd for telling us what is going on in Don Johnson's mind.
I like the way Don nods at the guy who's wearing his same clothes but then notices he is wearing socks...
Proud of being an 80s KID
I miss the 80’s….
Cars breaking down, water everywhere, no mechanics, no tow trucks, and everyone knows Coke is better than Pepsi. That's some life!
Dam i miss the 80's....
Where is Philip Michael Thomas?

Legendary TV commercial ;)

The record player - so THAT'S how rap got started!
Rap should be banned.
That would not have been possible the song played in the background was'nt released until november of 1985 so this probably would've been a Super Bowl XX commercial unless You Belong to The City was released in late 1984 and did'nt chart until late the following year.
I really wish they'd stuck this on the Miami Vice DVDs as an extra. Surely no one cares enough to block it now, so many years later.
DON AND GLENN ARE THE MEN!
you belong to the city- glen frey
AWESOME
He had signed a contract with an energy drink company to appear in their commercials.
GOLD!!!
Not even Don Johnson could make me like Pepsi. I dont drink much soda, but when I do, it's a Coke
I forgot to mention, The word around the set was that the commercial, scheduled to air only during the academy awards, cost $15 million.
"You Belong to the City" by Glenn Frey
i missed tubbs in this one.... who was the other guy!
you know i smell something?.......yep its cocaine i smell cocaine somewhere
Anybody got the ad where Glenn says, 'Hey, pal, I'm everywhere!' and Don says, 'Knock it off, Glenn!'? I'd love to see that 1. Where's it located?
That hurts.
"You Belong to the City"
HEY VERY NICE VID
He says "we like Pepsi and Rock and Roll".
Not 4 air, so it's RARE.
Interesting how Don is driving the Testarossa while this commercial was obviously produced during season 2
Dude, i think that's a Berlinetta Boxer (Ferrari BB 512i)
Ironically Don Johnson would endorse Diet Coke just 4 yrs later in a Superbowl commercial ...Jan . 89 actually Miami Vice would film its last episode a couple weeks later
Sweet commercial
yeah, in the first two seasons, but in this ad, it's not the car you're sayin' :)
Fun commercial.
don is so cool.
Directed by Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise)
@sdingeswho Good eye! The BB 512 Berlinetta was Ferrari's precursor to the Testarossa...
He had a contract to do ads for grape soda.
Lol, I was left wondering what this had to do with Pepsi ahaha, just a few pepsi cans here and there XD
Back in the 1980s, most people associated themselves into social groups based on soda preferences.
Which people were your Uncle & Cousin?
Wasn' t there a part where they went past a window with live "mannequins"?
the choice of the new generation! Yeah!
I GOING OUT TO GET A PEPSI RIGHT NOW!!
DON JOHSNON 4LIFE
You belong to the city!
Jennifer Grey started her career dancing in an old pepsi commerical....is the one?
@Spugester26 yea me to i wish i could go back to theses days and live out the rest of my life there
My brother was an extra in this commercial
Yeah me too.
...And Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, and his latest, Prometheus!
i miss cheesy 1908's commercials like this
NOT FOR AIR???? did this not get shown?
Glenn: Thats my song
Don:My songgg XDXDXD ahhahahaha
Glenn Frey - You belong to the city.
Is that a Ferrari 308 or 328? Nice and magic commercial until the first song is changed.
oh my, who?
This is a 512BBi Ferrari not a 512tr....
Funny that 512 BB considered canonical among the Daytona, Testarossa, 911 (driven by Sonny in early 80's) and rental 308 in LA (season 4).
whats that at 2.02?
what's the title of the first song?
Sonny Crockett should advertise everything.
i concur
LMAO 0:51 that's my song I love Don Johnson..so sexy
