The 3D dungeons blew people's minds, and still look good even today. The animation and detail is way, way above any other RPG of the time (Most RPGs had very spartan visuals, almost no animation just still enemy sprites).

I didn't understand RPG's as a small kid. American kids thought of video games as being like Mario or racing or shooting. RPG's were kind of weird and didn't go anywhere. I didn't get into them until I was 11 or 12, and it was after I realized they were telling a story, which was unprecedented to me at the time. Gamers today are spoiled hard by that thing, but 1991, it was brand new and it started a revolution so to speak.

I remember as a kid spending hours mapping out each dungeon with paper & pencil. Pencil incase I made a mistake which you almost always did. That was part of the charm & also the added difficulty of this game. But as an adult when I replay this game I usually just use walkthrough maps. But now I'm glad I won't have to cheat. This is one of the first games I ever bought for my Sega Master System. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it after seeing a commercial for it on a Detroit tv station from my home in Windsor, Ontario. I remember there was no hint book or guides back then. It took me FOREVER to figure out how to get the passport at the beginning of the game by going into the second-hand shop in Scion and purchasing the "secrets." You had to go in and out of that second-hand shop 3 times before he gives you the passport. And, YES, I remember trying to plot out the dungeons on paper and getting all turned around if you fell through a trap in the floor. Those were the good ol' days!!! I'm even old enough (48) to remember playing King's Quest III "To Heir is Human" on 3 floppy disks at my friends house on his computer. That was a frustrating game too. But they finally came out with a hint book that had rectangular boxes and you could use a special clear marker to make the hints appear. I still have a Master System and Phantasy Star. I just ordered the A/V cable for it and hooked it up and couldn't believe that my games from like 30 years ago were still saved on the cartridge!!!!!

I remember playing the GBA-Port, that also came with the seconmd and third game. That was in 2004, I think.
For the first game, you really needed a map, because the dungeons became just convulted later on and even then you could get lost if you stepped into pit tile. This port? Forget traps or getting lost and never finding out of a dungeon. Just use the map and happy dungeonm crawling. It's a much needed improvement.

Great video but you made some mistakes here. The Sega Master System released in 1986 not 1985. While it absolutely dominates the Nes in graphical capabilities it falls short in the sound department.

"NES would go to dominate the world.." not entirely, The Master system found great success in the UK and Brazil and outsold the NES big time. Granted when it comes to gaming the UK was it's own odd unique little bubble for many years. (And kinda fascinating) heck the Sega ages thing likely came from the slogan Sega used in the UK "to be this good takes Ages to be this good takes Sega"

I genuinely prefer the music without the FM sound system. So no, the Japanese sound track is not "Objectively better", you could the sound quality is objectively better, but not the sound track itself. Music is purely subjective, i personally love loads of LoFi noise music, which is purposefully made to have objectively low sound quality, but the music isn't objectively worse or better than any music. Music is complexly subjective. Awh whatever, anyways I'm a total sucker for crunchy 8 bit instruments, didn't grow up with this game, infact i wasn't even born when it came out so i hold not nostalgia for the older soundtrack, but i love it anyways

I bought this game just before nintendo shut down payment on the wii shop channel.
This is a great old school hard jrpg. Still got some of my graph maps of some of the more complex maps.
The upgrades in this switch port look great, I hope sega can do this with Shining in the Darkness which is a first person dungeon crawling game from the tatical rpg series, Shining Force.
Yo! I do get a kick out of making maps and putting up with challenges but... sometimes things should be toned down a notch.

Yeah, this is a superb release. I've not been able to bring myself to play the Sega Ages mode as I wanted to (re)-play the game as it was designed, albeit without the need to have grid paper and a pencil to hand (I tried it with a tablet and a spreadsheet with the PS3 release, but it was simply a nightmare). The only thing that really bothered me about this version with the automap is that the map doesn't just plot your route but it also marks out secrets that you haven't found yet. But the game runs smoothly, the ability to play with the FM sound chip in the International version is great, the scanline + chromatic aberration + TV curvature screen shader looks great and the added "run" key (which speeds up the game but, critically, not the music) is an absolute boon.

Because both are Japanese and not a lot of videos or prove the Mega Drive is different graphics are different.

I would hardly say the Japanese soundtrack is "objectively" better. I didn't grow up with this game but when I played a fan translation of Phantasy Star a few years ago, which allowed you to switch between the two soundtracks, I much preferred the US music over the FM soundtrack, even if it is technically inferior.

I sometimes confuse Phantasy Star with Shining Force, even though one's a tactical RPG with mythological creatures and the other is a standard RPG with a bit of Sci-Fi. With that said, I think I'll give this a shot sometime!
Also, a teacher from school which we used to visit during those days had a Sega Mark III, with a copy of Fantasy Zone. I only remembered that game for being a defender style game, it's level 1 theme for the most part and being very difficult. I did not know what the name of it was and did not see again for over a decade, until Screwattack did a video on it. And finding out it was available on the Wii Virtual Console, I decided to buy it. I hope that game makes it to the Switch as well, even if it's the original arcade version which is probably the overall better version. But in my eyes, Super Fantasy Zone for the Sega Mega Drive is the best!

I played Phantasy Star for the first time when I was 14/15 years old in 1997, ten years from the game's debut, but even back then, the game felt dated. But, seeing the Sega Ages version above with all the extras added, I'm buying it.

Phantasy Star is a great series the same team made my favorite JRPG of all time for Dreamcast and an expanded version on GameCube, and that game was Skies of Arcadia(Dreamcast) / Skies of Arcadia Legends(GameCube)
Best freaking JRPG ever. Well worth a play today!
I only comment to say that Dragon Quest is my favorite JRPG series. So this being their answer to Dragon Quest or Dragon Warrior originally in the U.S. Dragon Quest beats Phantasy Star.
Dragon Quest 11 is finally releasing on the Switch later this year. I already own it on PC, but that series deserves the sales and I will definitely be buying it again, and will get the collectors edition if its good and keep it sealed & buy/play the eShop version.
I hope SE remakes/ports the DS/3DS DQ games especially 5&8 at the very least. All of them if they can only one I don't like is 7.
I also really hope Sega remasters or at the very least ports Skies of Arcadia. Too many kids have missed out on such an awesome JRPG. The latest game that team made was Valkyria Chronicles 4.
In the original Valkyria Chronicles you can recruit Vyse & Aika the 2 main characters of Skies of Arcadia.
It would be awesome to have SoA remastered with Valkyria Chronicles art style. The color pencil art style would look good in that game. I would also buy that as collectors edition to keep sealed, regular boxed edition, and Nintendo eShop to maybe spur them to make the Skies of Arcadia sequal they had planned but scrapped due to poor sales.
If you never played download dolphin & get the skies of arcadia legends Rom for GameCube. You'll love it I promise!
