I'm not sure you have any idea what any of these words mean, because existentialism and neomarxism are as opposed as they can get: existentialism is the idea that you aren't predestined to follow a path that was made for you because you can make choices in life (so through that lens, it's impossible to make excuses for villains by claiming it's due to their tragic past or whatever, they could have become anything else, including heroes), and marxism is drenched in essentialism, the idea that you have no power to change who you are and are born a victim, an oppressor, a hero or a villain.

Fun fact. Rotten Tomatoes is changing the system so the only way you can post a customer review is if you purchase your ticket through Fandango, or whatever its called.

'Arcane' is a show with a progressive story, diverse cast and one of the main two leads is a lesbian. The show is regarded as a masterpiece from both sides of the political spectrum for it's plot, acting, animation and music. Same with 'Blue Eyed Samurai'.
So how come these shows didn't get 'review bombed' by 'incels'?

    • @marhawkman303

I worked for a gaming website for years and I can confirm the things you said from the media side of things. People took all manner of gratuity in exchange for favorable coverage. This has been happening for decades and nothing has changed aside from the FTC getting involved and changing the rules so that things like this must be presented in content so that people know its happened. This really hasnt changed anything because the people producing this crap have found ways to skirt the edges and basically avoid these sorts of regulations to a degree. Games media is the fucking worst and Ive seen it first hand.

The raw numbers are what matter not the intent behind them.

I worked in news. Started out on a business beat, moved into science and tech, did a bit of games journalism.
    Here's what I noticed:
The most toxic gamers I met were... games journalists, not going to lie. The guys who were getting skeezy with the booth babes? Generally games journalists covering the events.
Further, it never really pays to second guess the consumer. If something is getting slammed by the public and you want to help your friends, what you do is keep your mouth shut. Trying to paint the public as meanies and harassers, actually results in more harassment and horribleness.
Think of Mass Effect 3s ending. The public response to that was correct and valid, the initial ending was probably the worst in gaming history, and the redo was still rather weak to be honest. Its why the franchise has largely died.
Trying to paint the people demanding Bioware fix it as being against artistic integrity and experimentation... just made people hate the game, the devs and the journalists "defending" them even more, and I still think played a role in the development of Gamergate.
Same deal with attempts to gaslight audiences over their deep moral objections to Sweet Baby Inc's business model, or the quality of modern Disney movies. The more you try to defend stuff that is quite frankly awful, the longer and harsher the backlash to that bad thing is going to be.
If you just accept that it sucks and move on, nobody gets death threats. It is when you make it a hill to die on that people start going for the kill.
Also it never pays to go soft on reviews. The thing is, the publisher isn't doing business with you because they like you, they're doing business with you because your audience likes you. If you sacrifice your integrity for access, your audience will notice, will drop you, and that will cost you access because frankly there is no point to giving you access if nobody is going to pay attention.
Compare Angry Joe to LordKat. Now, Angry Joe isn't a great reviewer, he's controversial and for good reason, but - remember when he and Spoony went around E3 screaming betrayal? LordKat would go on to proclaim how unprofessional this was, and it undermined his attempts to get access. Angry Joe still has a career. LordKat does not. LordKat had precisely the opposite to the correct attitude to the job.
Run around making a clown of yourself, and you're entertaining. Be "professional" and you're a prostitute. Yahtzee is one of the longest lasting top critics in the business - and he didn't get there by being nice.

Also anytime someone screams review bombing I point out X-Men '97 had a gay, African American showrunner and had similar "pronoun" moment with Morph, people were angry he was made non-binary just before the premier. Can we at least call it something like a negative wave? It has no conspiracy or collusion, but it's done so quickly at scale that it can seem like that. Capitalism is always a bottom line affair; when a company gets so far up its own ass that it can't see the winds of consumer interest, this is the shit we get. Apathy and a dash of outrage can help steer things IF people stop buying and consuming cobbled together detritus. Great points, Wiz. I took a journalism course in university several years back and it was a total waste of time, effort, and money. The professor was an industry professional with decades of experience, actually a decent-seeming guy. And dishonesty and underhanded tactics in writing were his bread and butter.
One class I actually got into conflict with him because he was bringing up as examples of journalistic malfeasance this far right parody rag (one of those magazines where they have pictures of various celebrities with word bubbles above them saying idiotic trolly things the real person would never say). I was the only one in the class who found it funny, (it was really low-bro rage bait type stuff). The professor treated it like a Threat To Democracy and it would’ve been silly if it wasn’t so scary.
It was the exact same mentality we see out of the lunatics at MSNBC where they put out a fake story because they jumped the gun and were too eager, only to then turn around and call their opposition out for doing effectively just that.
    ‘Journalistic integrity’ is an oxymoron.

When I hear "reviewing bombing," I think of people who didn't actually give the thing a shot, and only gave a negative review because someone else told them to. If you don't watch the show or play the video game, you probably shouldn't be leaving a review.
Personally, I never saw The Acolyte in part because of reviews, but mainly because of fatigue. There are a lot of Star Wars and Marvel shows/movies I haven't seen, including stuff I've heard is good, because there is just too much. Disney has been milking the heck out of both, and there doesn't seem to be a unified vision for either. They're just throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks.

It’s honestly disgusting and it’s just another example of late stage capitalism and the total profit incentive that is occurring before our eyes. I think superfans CAN actually have a significant impact on box office results. Maybe only for certain franchises - and definitely only for good movies - but these are the people who are inclined to pay to see a movie in theaters multiple times. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what pushes a box office from "really good return" to, like, over ~$2 billion.

Velma wasn't even hate-watched into a second season- it'd been greenlit for two before it even started showing. The general (and well justified) revulsion for the series guaranteed it wasn't going to get a third, even as it became "the show we liked Scrappy in because he killed off Velma".

But how do we get good films while still appealing to the normies. I do want fight clubs and blade runners.
I guess good writing, casting, cinematography and acting. I think dune did a reasonable job.

Ultimately, we need to get bots out of the review process, and take the megaphone out of the hands of the paid shills named 'reviewers'. If there's a way to limit reviews to legitimate purchases, then it's a step in the right direction. Steam does this by requiring you to possess the product in order to make a review.
The other key number is sales numbers. If a game is so bad in its trailers that only people who love, breathe, and worship the franchise will buy it, then it may still get good review scores despite sucky content - the scaring away of people who would have given it bad reviews before they made a purchase filtering those who ultimately give it reviews.

Great video essay. Critical dissonance has always been a thing, but all of a sudden the audience is ALWAYS trolling when thy disagree with the critics in the negative sense. Funny how that works.

And I starting to get tired of the word “trolling” thrown around recently. It’s been overused as an insult to actual trolls without even knowing. Just say they are nagging detractors and quit trying to be hip with it. Not you, but to others out there.

Not in a million years is this 14% - below Holiday Special. 4.1% IMDB is a joke - many giving it 1/10 Again an absolute ridiculous score for the show - the fact that they showed up, special effects, costumes is going to give it higher than a 1 FFS
So it’s clearly a dedicated campaign and then Anticipatory obedience - the compliance of others to seek favour with the narrative.
To iterate - the clue is 1/10 for ‘inconsistencies in plot’ and ‘bad writing’ - not gambling mechanics or broken game systems.

A small group can review bomb small/niche products and can definitely hurt them.
But you can't review bomb big movies/games as the small group becomes too small to be noticeable.

I think Steams way of displaying the "overall" and "recent" reviews is the best argument against the journos that cry review bombing. Its a way to show that the dev recently did something the community does not like, then its up to you to decide if its a worthy reason. Take some of the Hogwarts reviews hating on it due to JK Rowling having created the IP the game was set in. Gives valuable feedback on if to purchase. The building might be fine on the outside, but if everyone is running out... probably not the best time to go inside without finding out why first. Also noteworthy if you see the reverse, several games go from mixed back up to mostly positive showing that devs that listen and change have recommendations reflecting that.

I watched the show before commenting on rotten tomatoes. I gave it a chance. I am not by any means against black characters, gay screenwriters or any of the typical reasons claimed. I just thought it was a badly written, lackluster show with weak visuals. If that makes me a bad person, so be it.

Tyler Perry's movies are the blackest media imaginable, and openly so. Yet, not one of them has received a wave of hatred from these supposed racists. It's only when you try to turn Star Wars or Lord of the Rings into a Tyler Perry movie that people get annoyed.

i take issue with this, review bombing is totally a thing
it's why all these show have 'overwhelming positive' reviews from critics, because Disney is buying positive reviews from glorified bots pretending to be 'journalists'...
seriously though, 'review bombing' is a thing, the problem is that most of it happens in the opposite direction, dozens to hundreds of single sentence 5-star reviews from accounts that have barely existed for a day... just because they're pro-mega corporation doesn't somehow make them okay and the negative reviews automatically invalid. Most of the disingenuous behavior on things like Rotten Tomatoes happens in the 'positive' direction. It's real, it's just not real in the way the bobbleheads want you to believe it is.

Im only 2 minutes in, but I get the impression that youre trying to tell me that the fanbase expressing and opinion about something on a public forum....ISNT review bombing? HOW CAN THIS BE?! I was told that because I didnt like a tv show or movie that I was in fact a woman hating racist but now, now, my entire world view comes into question because I might not be those things that the people(?) on the internet have told me I am. I must continue watching to find out more and hope to salvage my ego from the depths it had sunk due to comments telling me I was a bad person for not liking a product that other people liked. Ill return later for more comments possibly.

Asoka is the dumbest show I’ve ever seen and think that it’s being renewed for another season. Crazy. Message is more important than making g a show that people watch. There are many shows that I liked but which were cancelled very quickly. Being a normal person I realize that just me watching is not good enough to pay the bills. But these activists are so self centered that they are removed from reality.
