- Welcome back friends to Songs From Home, episode 58…
“The End Of My Pirate Days”….
We’re wishing you all a happy Valentine’s Day today from the farm, with all the chocolate, champagne, roses, poetry, cards, songs and romance you can carry.
As an antidote to all that sweetness, today’s song from my 1994 album Stones In The Road traces the end of a romance, because… sad songs make us happy! The sadder the better! Even on Valentine’s Day! My friends Shawn Colvin & Gretchen Peters will back me on this.
We rose and fell just like the tides
He filled my heart and soul and I
Buried all my dreams for someone else to find
In my pirate days…
I read an article recently about what it feels like to hit the pandemic “wall”. It described much of what I feel from one day to the next; some are productive and creative, I’m getting things done and looking forward with clear eyes, I’m feeling pretty ok. Then there are other days that are hollow and dark AF.
The article suggested, among other things, cultivating gratitude, practicing distracting yourself (hello Great British Baking Show, hello Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women”), asking for help (not easy), eating more carbs (no problem) exercising (Angus approves), remembering that the vaccine IS coming (a challenge given the abysmal roll out, but #patienceismysuperpower) and perhaps the simple act of writing down what you’re feeling & experiencing to tamp down the noise in your head. And then there are the wise words of our dear friend Carol Noonan from the legendary Stone Mountain Arts Center who reminds us that “dogs and mashed potatoes fix everything”. Amen sister.
However you are making it through, I hope you stay well, stay strong, wear your (double) mask, carry on, and always, always, always #staymighty !

Thank you so much beautiful for your time and amazing voice🙏🥰❤️
I think she is on a par with Beverly Sills the opera singer
One of my favorites. I'm sitting here on the bed with my white Shepherd, Buck, content as can be. Thank you.
Beautiful song the
I had a sudden memory of the Stones album the other day and quickly dragged my cd out for the first time in years. It’s still wonderful. And here I am now. And this song still takes the breath away. I have rediscovered you Mary, and I’m sorry I kind of lost track of you.
For all the solace you have given me in my solitude. Thank you Mary for Infinite light transfusion!
Beautiful old song. Happy Valentines Day. May cupid shoot everyone with his love arrows. Time for this world to show more love towards everyone no matter what nationality, gender or beliefs. God bless.
Happy birthday Mary...
🎂🌹🇮🇪💕
Beautiful! Thank you!
Love you, Marie! You’re so inspiring....
I love that sweet little face! He's so darling!! HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY to you all! 💘💘💘
Thank you so much, MCC. This has always been one of my favorites from your vast catalog. It carries a great deal of meaning for me personally. I am not sure how, but it fills me with both regret and hope at the same time. Your lyrics are magical and mystical, and sometimes, just sometimes, they give us all the power to "Keep on Doing" (with apologies to The Roches). With much love...
I love all of your songs but, right now, really appreciate when you sing the old ones. So comforting! Stay safe and strong, my friend. You give us so much joy. 💗
I would like to be re-incarnated as MCC's dog. A super nice owner...lots of long walks....and good music. And if I get bored, I can chase White Kitty around the kitchen.
My pets' veterinarian said a similar thing, if they came back they'd want to be one of my pets, dog or cat, didn't matter to them.
It is amazing to think how long you have been doing these gorgeous songs for the world. I smile and my bride would as she is an angel. And I am with her in spirit in my home celebrating Valentines! Maybe I will find someone but 6 years and I am still with my bride. No problem. Thank you Mary Chapin Carpenter for your wonderful music!
Your jewels 💎 shine brightly in the treasure chest of music 🎼 Thank you 🙏 so much.
What a great song!!!
Beautiful
Absolutely beautiful! The guitar and melody were like a gentle rain falling from heaven. You are a treasure. Much gratitude for enriching and caring for others.🙏❤️
Thank you! The encouragement of your beautiful voice is a blessing I am grateful to receive.
We all will need something when things calm down. Those pirate days ✌️ thank you Mary Chapin Carpenter for your dedication and your wonderful talent and sharing many weeks with us. ❤️
There’s something about this song that has always grabbed me by my heart! As sad as it is, I find it’s also comforting! Perhaps I had some pirate days myself. It’s wonderful to hear you sing it again! Thank you! Happy Valentine’s Day!
And Happy Valentines Day to you. First one without the departed wife. She liked See's Chocolates
@Tex Haines.
Very much with you in thought.
10th anniversary for me.
Stay as strong as possible, which, yes, remains a challenge. Remember the better times.
I am well aware that that sounds clichéd...sorry...stay well.
Awww, what a Sweetheart! and the way he looks, so 'schattig'! Angus and White Kitty always make me smile, and so are you Mary. HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! everyone!
@Elly van Ruiten
Hi Elly.
Your comment made me smile through the tears that the rendition of today's song caused: in Afrikaans we would call Angus 'Tog te skattig'!
😊
En Mary Chapin Carpenter het 'n pragtige stem, nie waar nie?
I trust you continue to remain well! 😷
@@ursulamulder110 Hi, Ursula, I'm glad that my comment made you smile. I agree with you, Mary 'heeft een prachtige stem' and it was a beautiful love song today. Angus always makes me 'heel blij' he is 'altijd' so enthusiastic. Hartelijke groeten Ursula and Stay well too.
@Elly van Ruiten
😊😊
Thank you for your bilingual reply.
With German and Afrikaans in the background, it is an absolute delight to read and understand the Dutch. But don't ask me to pronounce anything...it will probably sound more like the Flemish of yesteryear...? 🤭🤭
I wish there were a way to let MCC understand in as MANY tongues as POSSIBLE how truly profound her support of us has been during the past year, and that we ALL have a 'hand in (her) back' in return!!
Be well!!
You’re ability to get right into my soul knows no bounds. Thank you for your written words as well. X
Such a gentle, beautiful song! Happy Valentine’s Day! 💚🌻
Thank you very much. Your kindness, your humanity bringing us words of faith and hope makes me feel better, mighty.
After a year of being shut in and shut out by covid I think that we are all getting weary and blue, even if we are thankfully healthy. Your Sunday Songs from Home are definitely something that keeps us going, at least it keeps my friends and I going. Thank you! Carol Noonan is also correct about dogs and mashed potatoes fixing everything. Pirate Days is a beautiful song. We all enjoyed it. Could you play Down At The Twist And Shout one week? Give our love to Angus and White Kitty. HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!! HAPPY PRESIDENTS DAY!! HAPPY IT'S ALMOST SPRING (even though the world is covered with ice today). Thanks for the Mighty pick me up!
Happy Valentine's Day Mary, Angus, & White Kitty xo Thanks for the music.
Baby Angus!! 😍❤
He has always been such a handsome boy!!
I'm looking forward to seeing you tomorrow for Valentine's Day Mary. Spending Sundays with you and Angus (and occasionally with an appearance from White Kitty) is such a wonderful gift! Love to you all!! ❤🌹
Angus looks so lovely happy valentines day hi mary white kitty thanks for the music much love xz
Angie baby boy!! Awww!!! xoxoxoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!
Dear MCC, thank you so very much for sharing yourself with us so generously. These times are truly difficult, and, for what it's worth, I am sending mega-hugs to you, adorable Angus and WK for those moments that are 'dark AF'!!
Lots of love, and a few degrees of warmth from sunny Cape Town.
We SHALL overcome! 💞
I've seen MCC in concert twice and each time have marveled at her generosity as a performer. Indeed I marvel at her generosity in these songs from home as well. Your comment is lovely and is part of why we shall in fact overcome.
@@carolynkapner4188
Thank you so much!!
Attending just ONE live concert would be a dream come true!! And it would be SO grand to combine it with showing my (now adult) daughter where she was born when we were on a two year assignment in Texas, in the late 1980s, when MCC songs were played on the (kitchen/car) radio...
I repeat what I posted elsewhere before: I am allowed to dream, not so?
Did I hear someone whisper 'bucket list'???
🤭😊😷
Good evening Ms. Ursula, I’m nearing the end of my second journey with SFH wishing , now a year later, that Ms. Mary’s songs had continued. Many a time a Sunday morning song would’ve pushed the world’s worries away giving us all another brief respite. Been listing to some other artists covers of songs from my youth. Watching the younger generations sing them was refreshing to know that the old Rock & Roll is still appreciated. The Mona Lisa Twins do many Beatles, and Foxes & Fossils cover a variety of easy listening. But I’m back for the last few SFH and in between I’ll be listening to John Prine. Stayed up way later than usual, a credit card, online vinyl catalog with good discounts and I now have 9 of his albums to listen to. Spring is just “6 weeks away”, Punxsutawney Phil (our rodent weather forecaster) has declared! Been in that town dozens of time, just not on Feb. 2nd, my grandparents rest there. Half of me have roots there, though I grew up in D.C.(Washington). Keep a smile in your heart, a song in your mind and a kind word for all you meet. Peace and Blessings, once again, to you.
Thanks again for sharing yourself, Angus and (White Kitty). In referencing your notes, I will get my first Covid-19 shot on Feb 19 in Arizona. Happy Valentines Day to all!💝 Angus is a beautiful boy!
Thanks MCC for warming up a particularly cool morning with such a lovely song. Stay safe, stay strong, keep the faith and stay mighty!
Beautiful! Love to you, Angus and White Kitty.
Thanks for that song. It has been with me for almost half my life, like a talisman for measuring where I am in reference to my big dreams. It reminds me of who I could have been. Apparently, I have a really bright future behind me. I’m grateful for your grace in this mostly graceless world.
"Apparently, I have a great future behind me". That's a fantastic line and needs to have a song written to it.
🌞🌵 Angus has the kindest eyes, great Valentines picture.
P
Happy Valentine's day Mary and furry friends. I would love to hear The edge of the world. This song is so perfect in every way, and does'nt get near the attention it should. Please tell me that it is on your song list.Thank you and much love to you all!
Always feel better - a healing if you will - hearing a Mary song. ...and that Angus...such a sweet, gentle boy!
Dogs, mashed potatoes and Songs from Home! Thank you, MCC, for your generous gift. PS: I saw you at Slim's in 1992, the electricity went out and it was amazing!
I’ve loved this song ever since I first heard it. I get a fresh nugget of truth or wisdom just about every time I play it.
Peace and Love to you Mary. ✌️❤️. Thank you for sharing your love and music with the world.
Today is my birthday (I chose it - I was due in March but said, "Nope! I'm arriving on the day that represents LOVE!") - so this is an extra special gift to be able to hear you sing, dear Mary.:) Nanda, my golden sleeping next to me - a gift EVERY day... Sukanya, tuxedo kitty, watching the birdies find the seeds I put out in the snow... and a day ahead to be grateful for all of the love in my life in every form. Beautiful day to you, Angus, White Kitty -and everyone sharing this post. xxxx Maureen
So beautifully said, and so much implied... wonderful. Thank you.
Thanks for this sad song that gently strokes the painful cords of my heart's memory, soothing them a little more each time!
Thank you Mary! It may be the end of pirate days ,but not winter. Here in Texas we will be experiencing a whole season of winter in one week.
Never have I wanted to be a dog so much in my life! ❤😊
I sooooo look forward to my Sunday morning Songs from Home with sweet MCC, Angus and White Kitty!! I take the long way home from church to listen!! I get a double dose of God's blessings each Sunday!! Thank you, Mary, for another beautiful song that took me back to a walk down memory lane! Love and well wishes for you always!!🥰
🌵🌞 Mary, beautiful song but remember, never follow an animal act! Thanks, you are wonderful.
a nice compliment to the snow this morning...thank you...
Thank you for adding to a special day with a song from your 💘
Thanks for giving me my new slogan "Dogs and mashed potatoes fix everything." I can definitely say Amen to that!!
Dear MCC:-) Yay, Valentine's Premier! Run with Angus:-)watched the new IG video hundred times! Thank you for welcoming us! Again! For singing, reading, responding, providing so easy to connect channels for which I am grateful for a Lifetime!!! I love your music full scale, this week listened to The Things That We Are Made Of album most of the time. Angus's photo makes me smile ear to ear :-)Today I listened to Map Of My Heart and 88 Constellations for my King of hopefully not 'all lost causes':-)vague hopes though, but hopeful:) Smiles and love for Valentine's! Giant hugs to Angus & White Kitty. Thank you so much🌺
She played one of YOUR requests!?@Audrey Felso ?
@@Ma_Ba Yes, it was PhoebeFay Ruth's request last week, my respect to you Phoebe! About mine only you knew.
@@audreyfelso993 What a blessing it was to hear Mary sing this song today!
@@PhoebeFayRuthLouise Yes Phoebe and just like last week, I have no better words than yours, just can end up repeating you: a blessing! You are very generous to have written to me, humble thanks! Take care and I send sincere best wishes! PS Over my pirate days, too, just the longing & recognition here what have let go before them. This is my story.
@UCEu2O3snwtksoxrzLZFP26w It’s also a blessing to connect about our love for this song! Happy Valentine’s Day! You take care, my friend!
I’ve always loved this song - gently strummed and softly sung. So very intimate. Thank you
My weekly soothing of the soul. 💕
Aww Angus - happy, lovey boy
Can’t wait to hear your mama’s song selection for ❤️ day
I so enjoy your Songs from Home. Thank You for giving us a chance to hear your beautiful music during these trying times.
Great job Mary as always! The song makes me think of my own youth and the pirate I once was. Thank the Good Lord that those days are behind me. I like this version much better. Thank you for the songs and the memories and Happy Valentine's Day!
Thank you again for these weekly music gatherings (remote of course). A nice small event to look forward to each week.
Arrrrgghhh that were so luverly! ⛵️⚓️❤️
I wish you a nice and friendly Valentine's Day, Mary. 💞🍀🐞
Angus has the cutest puppy picture! Thanks for making Sunday wonderful!
That's one of my favourites! Beautiful lyrics, esp at the end. I think all love songs should be written so that the he can be changed to she without disruption!
I totally agree!
Love it! Tell us about the tractor sometime.👍✌️😊🙏🏼
Happy Valentine's Day from Ireland Mary!!❤️
Happy Valentines Day!! I look forward to your songs. Thank you
Love all you older songs, still waiting for Down at the twist and shout😁 liking your new music too. Your just great
What a sweet Angus face!! Valentine’s Day love and hugs to you, Angus and White Kitty ❤️ Amen to all you wrote for today! Not an easy day to add to uneasy times, but, after 1st vaccine dose this week it is feeling brighter. Got my dog and now mashed potatoes sound really good!! Thanks again for you gifts, Mary!
Thank you Mary.
Lives up to the sadder the better with line about burying your dreams. Regrets? I have a few! About doing myself dirty on top of it all. The sadder the betta with a good song to put it in perspective. Glad you came to the end of your pirate days so far as it is a relief to access your dreams without needing to get out a map and a shovel. Thanks for shining a light on this.
@Ma Ba.
It is a profoundly moving song.
All I can advise is to be as kind as possible to yourself - as much as you would be to someone else.
Stay strong and resilient.
😷😷
@@ursulamulder110 I am not going through any romantic turmoil sturm und drang. Music did work on the amygdala/emotional brain and lyrics marinated. More "It is Okay to Be Sad" and reflection on squandered youth. "Buried dreams" and "you just wasted my precious time"(Dylan Don't Look Twice vs. Diamonds and Rust). Older passage in life, not midlife crisis, looking for reinventing self if there can be a third act for an old gray mare sort of battle horse. Regrets are real because life has real limits. Made some choices. Not all revolving around romantic love, but relationships took some toll. I surrendered focus and some time not self possessed. Actually sad about changes in friendships and lost mentors and work life future, but less songs found about that.
@Ma Ba
😊😊 don't worry! I am not going to interpret anything the wrong way.
But the reference to a grey mare... I had to giggle but want to reiterate, don't be too hard on yourself!
Yes, people come and go in one's life. And there never seems to be a guarantee for who stays, who goes, or with whom the 'ties' are super-elastic and enable one to catch up with the greatest of ease.
Wishing you a good week, despite the ongoing tensions wrt your ex-president.
We have issues aplenty with one of our ex-presidents.😖
Keep well, keep smiling, but behind your mask! 😷💞
Dear Ursula Dear Ma Ba, sending my best. You are classics: 'not interpreting anything the wrong way' 'ties that are elastic to catch up with the greatest of ease' this is humanity, this is friendship to me. Don't Think Twice, Diamonds And Rust, love them to the Moon and back. I am hitting the pandemic wall, great but very exhausted. Sports news: both girls and boys came 1st place gold medal in county championship volleyball at the weekend, we are not a school specialising in sport, their fellow teams were. Great kids:) Love to you Both. Dear MCC, God bless is what I can say!
@@ursulamulder110 Audrey and I love your phrasing of ties that are elastic. Now I have another group song in my head because you said "keep smiling" 😂🌏🌍🌎
Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone! Angus is so lovely. I loved the way he raised a paw to ask for his toy back! I know what you mean Mary about good days and bad in the pandemic; sometimes it all seems to feel so hopeless and you’re wondering when life will get back to normal, or even if normality will ever return, the next the vaccine rollout is progressing well (at least here in the UK - one thing our Government or, more likely, our health service, have got right), you’ve accomplished what you wanted in the day, maybe an old friend got in touch and all seems well with the world. Strange times indeed and certainly testing all of our inner strength. Stay mighty. Love to everyone on this special day. Oh, by the way, I’m with you Mary, sad songs always cheer me up! 😊
Happiness is a cold nose and a warm puppy.
Smiling back at you my good friend ! So nice !
What a wonderful song choice for Valentine's Day. I'm grateful I've finally given up my pirate days and that I've realized that I need to find, and protect, my own treasures. No one can save us but ourselves, and we need to love ourselves the way we want to be loved by another. Sadly it took me quite a few years to get that figured out. Better late than never though! Happy Valentine's Day Mary! 😘💕🌹
Ms. Melissa, Remember it our journeys through life, good and maybe not so good sometimes, that make us who we are. Those past adventures give us the wisdom and courage to step out that door and embrace new ones, meet new people and share all that is good in you with all you meet along the way. Peace and Blessings to you.
@@wjcorrinne4052 Wow! You have no idea how I really needed to hear this today. Thank you more than words can say. I wrote this post almost a year ago and your timing today was perfect. There are no accidents. Thank you and thank God for kind people like you.
✌️❤️🙏
Ms. Melissa, I’m glad that you found value in my words to you. I’ve often said, you never can tell what a kind word or a smile may do when you give it to someone, a stranger to you. It costs so very little to share the good and it returns so much. You may never know what a person went through just before your paths cross? A kindness freely given may change their day and as you continue on your way the reward, you left behind to grow. I’ve met several though I’ll never see them in Ms. Mary’s SFH, but we share a common bond. Welcome to the club, Blessings to you.
@@wjcorrinne4052 so many blessings to you too! I'm grateful to know you and be part of this family. It was great to be on the receiving end of kindness when I needed it. I try to uplift and be supportive of others and I never expect to receive anything. You showed me firsthand how powerful our efforts can be and that the kindness we show others is never wasted even if we're unaware of the outcome. Thanks for the reminder and I'm so glad to be part of the family. I hope our paths cross online again someday. Take care! 🤗💕
Very, very beautiful and perfect timing for words MCC. Sometimes I think you've gone the best tune yet and the you pull another like a magician. Thank you my dear friend.
P.S. lovely
TY MCC Cheers to sad songs 🥂
👍
Thank yo Mary Chapman, my heart melts when I hear your beautiful soul!
Dear Ms. Mary, It appears that somebody is expecting some “conversation puppy treats”? “And after treats can we go out and play in the snow?” We’ve had some of our snow, here along the Miss. River with more to come before the w/e is over and the cold really sets in! Just completed my Mountain pass on a Norwegian Railroad and started my Wash.,D.C. to Seattle road trip. They make exercising on stationary bike and Nu-step more entertaining. What I haven’t figured out is how can I get your Songs From Home to play on my iPad at the same time? I don’t have a “smart “ phone mine is more of a “barely” smart phone, so that won’t work. I’ll listen to your selection tomorrow morning and then flip over to my trip west, W. Va. I believe is where I will be starting day 2. Watching these trips, especially across America, reminds me that we live in a great country with lots of beautiful scenery. How lucky we are to be blessed to call America Our Country. Blessed that it is populated with an artist’s palate of people and cultures, yes, we are fortunate. Bless all those who give so much of themselves from the youngest who takes the initiative to collect food for those in need to those who also give so much to keep us safe and healthy and continue to battle this virus with renewed intensity daily. And bless you Ms. Mary as you share your talents with us and all the other artists that joined the fight. Yes, we are ALL fortunate, indeed.
Thank you, Mary!💕
You still have fans from the last century!!!
Thank you
Thank you so much Mary for your gentle encouraging voice and music! Stay well and stay mighty!💕
I stare out the window behind you looking over the snowy field. The soft voice soothing in the background as the warmth of the house encases me. Memories flow and all the world fades as i find myself within the story of the words. Thank you again Mary ....you are a blessing!
Art ripples wonderfully. Sitting here writing my children's book and your song inspires beautiful prose. Thank you.
You won my heart Mary!
"I better get lots of treats for doing this"-- Angus. Our Valentine delivers again with...arrr!...more good stuff.
Not that it was planned but a lot of my single friends and I are embracing this Valentine's Day as a reminder to love ourselves. I don't know if it's an appreciation of making it this far through a pandemic that's taken so many, but yeah, so many folks are getting: we are our own best Valentine. Anyway, hope yours was a great one.
What a good UA-cam friend you have been to me! Especially today, after running a high fever the past two days (not COVID! Never have been so glad to hear “kidney infection “. I have loved your music since I found “Stones in the Road” and played it over and over. Your videos are personal, caring and encouraging. Thank you for helping us all through a very difficult time.

For a change, ending my day with you. When I first heard this song, I hadn't felt the loss of a love. Today, I listened with new ears and identified with the pain of the end of my "pirate days". You are one way I am able to deal with the "wall". Always grateful for the many gifts you share each week ❤
Thank You so much ❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful. Thank you and sweet Angus for the warmth, lovely music and kind thoughts. ♥️
Pirate days, only leads me to wonder what your really like, and have experienced in your travels?
Oh how cute! Is this Angus' puppy picture?
Beautiful ! just beautiful, what more can you say ? !
And those who need adventure can sail the 7 seas while listening to music from MCC..💪💟
Thanks for this set of memories. I loved this song then and love it now. With this pirate looking at 56, this song has a very different meaning to me than it did when I was almost thirty.
He looks like a very good boy
Thank-you. Such a lovely song.

Yes, I am a pirate
Three hundred years too late
The cannons don't thunder
There's nothing to plunder
I'm an over 60 victim of fate
Arriving too late...
It's a state of mind. I'll see you at the beach.
