A major difference between The Association and bands like The Beach Boys was that with 6 or 7 guys in the band each handling multiple instruments, these guys didn't need to rely on studio musicians to fill out their sound. Also, in the couple of years before their first hit, they spent most of their time producing and mixing recordings for other bands, and learned a lot in the process.
Also, as you listen, remember that those multilayered harmonies were performed LIVE, and without techno-crutches like Autotune.

Born in 1970, I've loved this band ever since I was a toddler, when I repeatedly insisted that my father play their greatest hits album. Most of their songs are upbeat, but perhaps their most interesting song is the darker "Requiem for the Masses." It's about the death of a hero or a tragic figure. It might have been about the Vietnam War, but I'm sure there are plenty of different interpretations. Get the lyrics if you choose to react to it.

Dick Clark, "Music is the soundtrack of our lives". He was so right. Every month (sometimes every week) a song would be released that would be timeless (like this one) . I was surrounded by these songs from the time I became musically aware in March 1960 when Elvis came home from Germany (right here at Fort Dix, New Jersey) until the Napster era when things began to dissolve. Be jealous Harri. It was 50 years of the greatest music.

Terry Kirkman, the lead singer and co-founder of the group, is playing the recorder (a flute-like instrument) on this and other tracks. The irony of this group and other '60s groups was record companies routinely used studio musicians rather than let the group members play. The only group member who plays on this track was Terry. Everyone else was a Wrecking Crew veteran. The bass player was Joe Osborn and the drummer was Hal Blaine. Interesting fun fact: on this album , "Birthday," they were offered the Jimmy Webb song that Richard Harris had a worldwide smash hit with, "MacArthur Park." But the group wanted to include only their own compositions on the album. Missed chance?

The change in pitch on the word at the 3:06 mark "to the feeling" is sheer brilliance. By the way, what are those golf course shots and pictures of peacocks having to do with this song? LOL! Absolutely, the writers and arrangers and producers were way better back then. Nowadays, the goal is to make your song sound like a previous hit. Back then, everyone was trying to do something new.

A beautiful period of history that was so explosive & beautiful & all coexisted together to be arguably the most exciting & turbulent & everything it could be that lasted only 6 to 7 years max. 1965 to 1972, Vietnam War ( American era ), Muscle Cars era, Folk Rock, Hippie Movement, psychedelic rock, jazz rock , flower power, it was the most unbelievable era , an era I relieved my whole life with my daddy & his brother that was forever stuck in 1964 to 1972, because there was no time that close & exciting. Sadly & strangely it ended as abruptly as it started.

Association -1. An organized body of people who have an interest, activity, or purpose in common; a society. 2. A mental connection or relation between thoughts, feelings, ideas, or sensations. 3. A remembered or imagined feeling, emotion, idea, or sensation linked to a person, object, or idea.
This song is a disclosure of the Law of attraction and how it has worked for a person singing it. This is real and it is what you are meant to do.

Folk Rock. Jazz Rock. Psychedelic Rock era. So amazing. You can check out , Grass Roots, the Rascals, Peter, Paul, & Mary, Johnny Rivers, Spiral Staircase, Paul Revere & the Raiders. Some of the great Jazz & Folk Rock of course the Doors were the leaders at the top. This era only had a hard core 5 years. Maybe 7 total but so much going on during that time. You can always hear the huge Jazz influence they grew up with cause of their parents era , 1940s, 50s jazz which they played at school in the band then at night they are in their garage with drums & Guitars trying to imitate the Beatles & Stones, & mixing this new garage rock band era with their parents jazz. I would say Chicago & The Doors did it at the most elite Beatles & Stones level. But, the Hippie Rock, Folk Rock , Psychedelic Rock, & Jazz Rock era. So great.

    Excellent observation on their
similarity to a couple of other

One other song that you should
    definitely hear is
    Requiem For The Masses

Harri, one of the things that REALLY surprised me was finding out they were LA-based when growing up I thought they were from Chicago as that music had that really Big City (Chicagoland/NYC) feel to it in this then-ten year old kid's eyes; goes to show you never can really tell.....

Yes, Moon has no enemies. Even Sidereal Scorpio where Moon is at its fall, the dispositor of Scorpio which is at its fall in Cancer. So the debilitaion of Moon in Scorpio is also cscelled through double negatives become a position. Moon is also exalted in Taurus where no planets are in fall in Taurus, plus the Moon is exalted in a sign which it does not rule meaning a perdon who assumes a managerial position in yhe grapevine in the office where is not really the gormal office mansger. That is powerful because everything thst goes to the office manager needs to go throuhh him first.
Yes the 60s was a good time to be alive where the baby boomers are at the prime of yheir lige.
Moon is the father of Mercury the Generation Y guys. I suspect you are from Generation Y.

You mention how the Association, Beach Boys and Mamas and Papas all had a similar beautiful sound. Actually, the recording musicians that made the backing tracks for all three of these bands were the Wrecking Crew, the unofficial name for the 30 or so core group of L.A. session players that made many of the hits, movie soundtracks and jingles of that era.

You've done 4 of their songs now. They had a lot of other great hits such as "Never My Love", “Time For Livin'”, “The Time It Is Today”, “Enter The Young”, “No Fair At All”, "Requiem For The Masses" etc.

Dagmar, let's not forget the tune which has become a crowd fave in their live performances, "Six Man Band"! Definitely a Bucket List Band (Bands you've never seen but absolutely MUST see before the last surviving original member kicks the bucket) in my eyes! While we're on the subject of "Time For Livin'", that is one of the greatest chill out songs ever recorded if you ask me!

Good grief, stop already with the Wrecking Crew, with the insinuation that they didn't play their own instruments. They were on the road 250 days of the year and studio time was expensive. For expediency, the producers sometimes had Wrecking crew / studio musicians play the backing tracks. This was the same for many groups at the time. When your touring schedule only allotted 40 days to make an album, time was precious. But having seen them many times, they were great musicians in their own right and sounded as good or better live than as studio versions. The harmonies pristine, no pitch correction, sampling or auto-tune.

They were allowed to be creative then. The labels have too much control over the artists today, and any artist who is created is marginalized. I think that many artists today could impress us massively, if they were just allowed to.
