Anything Terry Kirkman wrote is a masterpiece
Wow, never thought I'd see a live performance of "Everything That Touches You" from '68. The layering of the vocals is so intricate and well-done.They did a real good job there.
Yes me neither but i knew if i FOUND one it WOULD be GOOD this is the best song for me PEACE from Brooklyn N.Y.
I love this song.. Thank you for posting this actual live version.
Wasn't it live on The Smothers Brithers Comedy Hour?
@@jasonbeard4713 no it was mimed
Watching and listening to this half century old recording gives me respect for something lacking in today’s popular music; Artistry. Minimal technology…serious talent! Thank you very much!
Thank you Terry for those beautiful songs. I sure miss the music of my youth but I still can listen to it here😊
“And the ground I am walking, the air that I breathe, are shared at those moments with you”. Yes they were, my darling. I lost my Wife to cancer in Feb 2021. This song evokes so many precious memories of our marriage, our time together with our two sons. She always said we led a charmed life. Until cancer showed up we did. We’ll be together again Sweetheart, for our marriage is Eternal.❤️❤️
Me too ... lost my wife last year in a head-on car crash where the other driver has been charged criminally .... "Everything" sums up the 45 years of our love together
So sorry for your losses. And, now Terry Kirkman is gone.
@@ThreeUnits_ So sorry for your loss. You get through the tragedy, and the sorrow and grief, but you never get over it. Too many precious memories over the 45 years you had together. Same with me and our 48+ years together. She was the light in my life. She was the best thing about me. I walked around for that first year feeling hollow and incomplete. About once a month, I feel the loss so bad, that for that day I’m useless.
@@ThreeUnits_so sorry for your loss
THIS is art. Today’s stuff is garbage. Pure, powerful pop. Always loved them, still do, and I was born in 1950. Yep, I’m still Associated!
Well said.
Me too. 1951 kid and associated.
STOP your fkng hate speech.
Either listen to the music, r GO, without your. Passive-aggressive hate for YOUR present.
I'm 75 and forgot how much I liked them back in the day. A very talented group that I was lucky enough to see in 1968 before being drafted.
Oh cmon. That’s what so many of our parents were saying about this music. My dad said the Beatles weren’t singing, they were just yelling and looked like women. 😂. Everything is relative
I grew up on The Association. I can remember exactly where I was the first time I heard Along Comes Mary. Was a car hop when Cherish was a hit. Saw them live in 1984 and was blown away. Larry's (guitar) brother Del, who is now in the band, was running sound and singing an EIGHTH part. These guys are too good for the Rock Hall.
Yes, they ARE too good for the Rock Hall of Fame. Most in there don't even deserve it.
This life performance of One Too Many Mornings is MUCH better as the recorded one. Faster and much more dynamic. Great life performance of all the band members.
One of the greatest bands of the late 60's that remains unrecognized. It's amazing how close to the studio version this live version is. A great vocal group.
Everything That Touches You is an incredible song that opens the heart and uplifts!
Whoa! Finally! A LIVE performance of their last Top 10 hit, "Everything That Touches You", Sweet and raw.....nice!
I’m digging Larry’s suit!
Never realized what a great live band they were
Nails how great they sounded live.
Just attending this performance alone would be heaven. How wonderful it was to hear The Association for the first time six years ago. One of the groups that got me through my lonesome teenage years and provoked pure emotion in me. The generation I was born into is prosaic and monotonous. I was born too late.
Hearing "ETTTY" done live is truly an experience worth waiting for all these years. Not an easy tune to do live with all the components that made up the original version. Love Larry's marachi outfit. Thanks for posting this clip.
Remember too in those days no in ear monitors. Great song very tough to perform live. Great fun to see this. Thanks
One of my favorite pop tunes of all time, ETTTY. It's really odd to see the audience so unimpressed by this performance, however. Either the song had not been released yet (and they were not familiar with it), or this audience footage was shot separately from this performance. Though it is not a perfect rendition of the studio recording (Wrecking Crew musicians), the Association "band" is cooking here. Really great to see this song performed live.
@@davidhughes4448 You would think they would appreciate a great tune regardless of how many times they had heard it or even if they'd never heard it.
@@harvey1954 I completely agree, harvey1954. Thanks for replying.
"One Too Many Mornings" -the first song I ever saw the Association perform live (April, 1968, Westbury Music Fair). I still love their music.
I’m from Westbury and remember the Westbury music fair very well. I left home in 89
Mine also, at Fordham. My two favorites by one of the best groups ever.
Love Russ's lead vocal on that.
Never get tired of hearing this great band. Many thanks to Reelin in the years& Dave Peck.
Thank you!
So rare to see this footage. Very moving.
The combination of Terry's writing and Jim's lead vocals are the best, which makes 'Everything....' the best! I didn't think I would hear a 'good' version of that song live, but they nailed it. Glad to have heard this, always wondered if they would do that song live.
Jim is singing lead on the first verse here. Terry sings lead on the subsequent verses, with Jim on harmony. They sing the first verse in unison on the studio version.
The Association............the real deal. What an amazing group!
One of the greatest vocal groups of all time!
Such an underrated band!
True.
This band is so awesome, so much more than thier hits. Those hits are good though. I'm so glad I went down a rabbit hole with this band.
Proof that the Association did what the Beatles and others said couldn't be done live
Terry Kirkman & Ted Bluechel did the best job here = standout performers. I've never seen Ted actually hitting drums with sticks before? He mostly tickled them with wire brushes. Must've been those tracked stage performances?
I've never seen a live, "Everything That Touches You" before & wondered how disciplined the singers kept to staying with their parts, not making variations? It sounded pretty good.
Monterey and Ravinia for drumsticks?
Ted Bluechel sounded great playing the drums, when I saw The Association perform, “Kicking the Gong Around” in concert in 1972.
Love these live performances of The Association♥️🌹 Such a testimony of how talented they where on stage as well as in the studio. That time live shows were very low tech and stage sound monitoring was in the stoneage compared to today's wireless earphones and mics.
Jesus, a live version of "everything that touches you"!!!❤ And it is awesome!!!
Agreed, what a great find. Hard working band. One measure of top line song construction is how it's covered by others. But you can't find quality covers of Everything That Touches You because of the challenging harmony involved. Here you have 6 guys contributing, it took patience to compose. Wonder what Brian Wilson's impressions of this band were.
I once read that Brian Wilson was extremely impressed with the band’s first album, “And Then Along Comes The Association.”
I believe that both bands often appeared together at concert appearances.
Unbelievable! Perfection. One of my favorite Association songs along with "Like Always," "Time for Livin,' "No Fair at All," and of course Windy, Cherish, Never My Love, to name a few!👍🎵🎵🙂
They were all Legendary and AM radio great songs 😅.
Most people think of Along Comes Mary as The Association’s first hit but One Too Many Mornings received radio play in Los Angeles and other cities. It unfortunately was left off Warner Bros.’ “Greatest Hits” album.
I love this so much. I was so psyched to have seen them perform both these songs in person, the first time in 1970, after Jules Alexander had joined the group. His guitar work and vocals added yet another dimension to this incredible band's live performance. Then, in December 2004, I saw them do it again at the taping of a show for PBS, produced by TJ Lubinski. All the living band members had rejoined the current touring group for this event, and they hadn't planned on performing this one, but producer Lubinski requested it during the soundcheck. It threw the veterans off a bit, even Terry Kirkman (who wrote the song), because he hadn't sung it in years. But they worked the kinks out and it sounded awesome.
Exquisite harmonies ❤️
Great group the Association were. The harmonies with the good music.
Still are.
Technically, they're still playing under the name The Association, but it's so far removed from the original line-up now...they are kind of like a tribute to themselves these days. This is the only real Association, IMHO.
@@suneyeintuition4315 I see your point, but I always feel that something's missing when Jules isn't on stage.
Jim yester and Jules Alexander front the band now touring.russ giguire retired the same week in Feb 2014 as Larry Ramos did.larry passed 2 months after that.russ had health issues to take care of and works behind the scenes booking the group dates to play.ted bluechel jr,and terry kirkman retired back in the 80”s most of us know or are aware Terry passed this year and it’s been 50 plus years Brian Cole passed.of course the current group won’t compare to the original lineups.however, they are doing the best shows possible with Larry’s brother del playing bass and singing.brian Cole’s son Jordan playing keyboards, woodwinds, guitar and singing.bruce Pictor playing Teds drum kit.paul holland plays lead guitar as Jules and Jim play guitar and all sing.
Wow!!! I am 64 and grew up on them.I have never heard them live before. They really were good!!!
They did quite a bit of over dubbing so the fact that they could sound this good live is truely amazing. Terry Kirkman liked the sound of two singers singing the lead to give the lead vocal more body. Jim Yester and Terry sang the lead in unison on "Everything That Touches You" and also contributed to the back up harmonies, as well. He had Russ Giguere and Larry Ramos sing the lead vocal in unison on "Windy" and "Time For Livin'". Terry Kirkman and Larry Ramos sang the lead in unison on "Never My Love" and Terry and Russ sang lead in unison on "Cherish".
This was the Rome Pop Music Festival. The Pink Floyd played there
First time I've seen this. Brian really nailed Osborne's sound and parts her!
This band rocks.
Wow, makes me smile. I was 10 in 1968. TY for this
It's great to finally hear a live version of ETTY from the 1960's. My observations: the studio version is a co-lead with Jim and Terry but here it starts with just Jim on vocals and Terry playing the recorder. Eventually Terry does join. This is a very difficult song to sing, so many parts and they seem to be struggling, someone is singing a little flat. Still great to hear though
at 3:40 I think it's Marty Balin in the audience
This was my fav Associion song followed by Requiem.
Not bad, be aware how difficult those vocals and harmonies are, so for a live version it is great, also the sound, the music.
My favorite collection of the greatest folk musicians ever. Each individual is an outstanding musician and singer. They are also very intelligent, all of them.
LOVE THIS!! Good LIVE performances by this fantastic group are RARE!!!
Rare? Then I must have really lucked out. They sounded great on August 3, 1968 in Asbury Park, NJ, and they sounded fantastic on February 28, 1981 in Berkeley, CA. Maybe not so rare.
@@artosullivan4509 LOLOLOL....No, Art. I was referring to truly LIVE as opposed to lip synched on UA-cam. I, too, saw them several times live in concert and, each time I was blown away/moved by the beauty of their harmonies, and tight, excellent instrumentation!! You and I AGREE. They are an excellent, amazing live performers!!!
@@tantraman10 I'm so glad we agree!
I'd pay good money for an Association dvd if there's more of this stuff
Here's a nice, reunion gig from 1979 or 1980. XLNT sound and harmony detection... ua-cam.com/video/qwxhyPdEYxQ/v-deo.html
there is more actual live stuff on youtube
Excellent tunes. That Black and white bolero suit the guitar player on the end is wearing is great.
That's Larry Ramos, on the end in the black and white suit.
The late, great Mr. Ramos must have been a fan of “Zorro,” starring the late Guy Williams.
The Association performed “One Too Many Mornings” as the opening song on their 1970 live in concert album.
When I saw them perform in Central Park in 1972, they did not perform this song. However, 29 years later, I saw Russ Giguere, along with the late Larry Ramos, perform this great song at a concert out on Long Island, 10 days before 9/11.
I look forward to seeing The Association perform at The Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ this upcoming June, 50 years after I first saw this legendary band perform.
PS I wonder if that Italian audience was able to fully “capisce” The Association’s complex lyrics?
I saw them do One too at the Ice House in 1979. Blew my head off. I met Terry in 1999 or so. Little stand offish. When I mentioned seeing One too at the Ice house their came a big Terry Kirkman smile. Very nice man.
For some reasons videos like this make me think about my father I know is a real Angel.
One of my all-time favorite groups. Amazing harmonies! Thank you for posting this.
This is amazing; they came to perform this day. Just outstanding.
The Association at their very best.
OMG.....they sound incredible!!!!
Brilliance! They are on top form!
Such a great group!
Whoa, a side of the Association you don't often see. Not sure what to make of this, it's got an almost garage band/power pop kind of thing going. And they're all freakin' sweating a lot!
Italy, May 68. Hot....hot...hot.
There are a a couple actual live videos of the Association. This one and another have come out in the last year surprisingly. They sound the most different to me on this one. Maybe cause they were sweating balls! Still fantastic
Consider the year, and the limitations of technology in 1968. This was a n immensely talented band, with great singers and songwriters. Yes, it was pop music, but very finely crafted pop music!
Always loved the harmonies on this track
RIP Terry Kirkman.
Slick move by Ted at 1:20
Brian, Larry. and Terry are in heaven with some of the other greats that died too early
Jules(Gary)Alexander & Jim Yester along with Larry Ramos (son of original member Del Ramos, RIP),keep it going😊
* Russ Giguere & Ted Bluechel Jr. retired.
This is wonderful to see. I've always wondered where their great performances are. Even the excellent TV-performance of "Pandora" where they sat n a circle and sang it. Or their funny "Poison Ivy" live...their live performances of "Remember" with just one acoustic guitar playing... thank you.
Great music from this group in their day. In comparison to today’s crap!
so good to see ties being ditched for a more casual look
so amazing …
I would love to know the background of this performance. I know they did a lot of college and University shows in their heyday.
So many of these bands were so capable live even the ones that didnt always play on there records oddly enough. Saw them a couple years ago got too meet 2 original members also love the crowd shots amazing as there music..
ETTTY is a musician's song, it is certainly not the song for a popular audience. The Association had become more and more sophisticated by this time and they left their pop sensibilities behind them--if they ever had pop sensibilities. Glenn Miller, the leading big band conductor of the big band era, had marvelous arrangers and they wrote marvelous things and Glenn would take out his black pen and simplify what his people had given him (not always, listen to the third chorus in "Volga Boatmen"). Only a few bands of that era managed to combine skill and pop sensibility over the long run . . . to my mind, the Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys, and, a little later, Led Zeppelin.
How are The Association not in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame?
I remember Dan Ingram and Cousin Bruce Morrow also Chuck Leonard playing this 1968 song at Music 🎶 Radio77 WABC AM during their top 40 weekly countdowns. That was a great song from the spring of 1968.
Hell yeah!!
Damn. This is fucking incredible live footage. I only wish the crowd hadn't given them such a hard time. Just look at them near the end. Imagine looking at these bored teenagers playing such beautiful music. It racks the brain. I think they kindof were running out of steam toward the end because of this situation and that they may have nailed it better if they had a better crowd. Still an incredible live performance.
Bored... or stoned?
@@burlingtonbill1 they looked incredibly bored to me but who knows lol
The latter.
I may be wrong, but I believe I read somewhere this was in Rome IT. Some kind of international festival. Definitely not an American audience.
I’m a pop musician who has long bemoaned that most of my live performances are met with this kind of audience reaction or- worse- staring at cell phones. It’s oddly comforting and humorous to see The Association receive the same response. Some thing never change!
Fantastic.
God, the audience is bored out of their minds. I would have loved to have been there.
That Brian Cole was an excellent Bass player
Nice!
Ray Manzarek said “We were quite angry wondering why The Association was at the Monterey Pop Festival, and The Doors were not.” Manzarek was a great writer/performer but was so wrong especially based on the first song here which is musicanship extraordinaire!
Yes
Never heard One Too Many Mormons but it's a great driving rocker. Everything That Touches You is my favorite Association song. It takes TONS of talent to sing and play those harmonies. Oh well, at least the girls appreciate beautiful music. The boys in the audience were all worried about possibly becoming cannon fodder for the latest installment in the ongoing American crime against humanity.
This was in Italy, so the young men weren't worried about being drafted, the were just trying to act cool.
Must have been a really tough song to sing, look at the strain and sweat on Jim Yester and Larry Ramos.
It's interesting to peruse all of their different performances and detect which are 1. Totally live (like this one) 2. Canned backing tracks and live vocals. 3. Lip synced.
It's surprising that there doesn't seem to be a totally live "Never My Love" from the period. This music is so hard to replicate live but these guys could do it.
AMAZING
Everyone raves about the Beach Boy's harmonies. Sometimes even the Mama's and Papa's. Or CSNY. Odd how The Association gets completely left out of the conversation.
Mi grupo favorito de la segunda mitad de los 60s.
Anyone else notice the cutaway to the audience at 5:24 ? It's hilarious .
I really enjoyed Russ on One To Many and Jim on Everything. Also check out Larry’s guitar sling.
An underrated band no doubt and unfairly type cast as just being more like yacht rock, but they had some very talented musicians, great harmonies and some good rocking tunes case in point along comes Mary from the Monterey pop Festival 1967
Dylan wrote this one. Johnny Cash sang it a lot as did many country folk singers. Love it.
this is the FIRST song on their live album[1970]
sounds really great....vox right on....
To Rita, sure do miss you.❤
Cherish was a another great #1 great song 😅.
Yes! Terry and Russ sang lead in unison on that one!
❤
I always wanted hair like Jim's
Yes, Mr. Yester along with his bandmates Terry Kirkman and Russ Giguere, has one of the greatest heads of hair in rock & roll!
European audience, unless directed to get up dance for the cameras they will just sit there a soak it all in doesnt mean they arent enjoying the concert.
5:27....the brown acid comes on strong.......LOL
2:39, lol... Even back in '68 the "pipe guy" would have been considered a snob, (or you could just drop the "s" all together and he could be a good old-fashioned NOB I suppose)... lol
Such a great, moving romantic song about love. It seems like it was wasted on the audience, but maybe I’m reading wrong.
LOL... Even though I appreciate the music now that I'm older, I would have been the guy rubbing his face with his hands in frustration (5:27) of being forced to watch a "Pop" group during collage concerts that the school I went to had put on. I was a metal/hard rock fan and anything else was crap, (my ignorant years... lol)
Enjoy this music for what it was & is... TIMELESS!!... Especially when compared to the sounds coming from THE TWILIGHT ZONE OF STUPIDITY... I am referring directly to hip-hop and rap when I say THE TWILIGHT ZONE OF STUPIDITY... Today's sounds that are rubbish and popular... Too popular!! So, yes, forgive yourself for your past mistakes of not getting into the 60's pop... The 60's Music of all kinds was mystifying and very SUPERcool. Unlike today's from THE TWILIGHT ZONE OF STUPIDITY... Today's music lacks the talent & skills necessary to create art, something of beauty... Peace And Love to all of you, who like me, loved THE ASSOCIATION and this type of music.
Yes they had some great songs from 60s but I think the reason the Association like the Grass Roots and some others kept going even I. Smaller venues across the country is they didn’t pride themselves out of the music business , Half of life IS just showing up
RIP - Terry Kirkman, Larry Ramos, Brian Cole.
R.I.P. Terry Kirkman
