- RTOON EVOLUTION #44.3 - MARGE SIMPSON
Created as a companion video to my series of CARTOON EVOLUTION videos (specifically 'Evolution of THE SIMPSONS - 37 Years Explained'), I take a look at the vocal evolution of Julie Kavner as I compare her vocal performance of Marge from The Tracy Ullman Show and through the 35 seasons of The Simpsons series.
Here's my look at Marge Simpson's Voice Through the Years!

Kinda ironic you released this right after LS Mark’s newest video where he’s worried about the Simpsons voice actors not being able to do this much longer specifically citing Julie Kavner.
If you remember there was a Godfather game on PS2 and there's a unused voice clip by Marlon Brando that he recorded on his litteral death bed...trust me it could get MUCH worse. Also look up a recent live performance by Bon Jovi.
Julie's not good anymore but it hasn't gone into the "this just makes me feel sad" territory...yet.
When you realise they made AI, so The Simpsons could never stop being made....
After the twenty-sixth season, you could tell that Julie Kavner was starting to sound rough in the next eight seasons.
While i feel bad, this is her own choice of deciding whenever to retire or continue voicing Marge Bovier Simpson.
You can really tell the difference in Julie’s voice in the recent seasons.
Yeah LS Mark said that in his newest video talking about shows that run too long and is legit worried for Julie Kavner.
Just a reminder. Julie Kavner's first major role was the sitcom Rhoda, which was all the way back in 1974. And I couldn't tell you if she's the only surviving cast member, but Valarie Harper (the Rhoda of Rhoda) died several years back. So basically a career spanning 50 years from the premiere episode of that sitcom to the last episode of the Simpsons recorded. And 30+ years of doing a character with a scratchy voice as well as 2 others with an even scratchier voice (Patty and Selma) isn't going to do vocal cords any favors.
Yeah. She’s in her 70’s, so it makes sense. And it really highlights just how long the show has been on the air
Yeah and no offense to Julie’s voice, but her voice sounds like she inhaled a pack of Marlboro or something. Hopefully in the future they’ll find a new voice for Marge to replace Julie.
@@jordandutra9029 there’s no need unless Julie decides to retire or if she passes away. If they wanted to replace her, then they already could have by now.
She's 73 years old but now Marge sounds like she's 80 years old.
There's speculation that she has been suffering vocal chord damage since "The Simpsons Movie" and season 27 sounds like it's the last time she could hide that vocal damage. But by season 30 it sounds like she has to use her natural voice.
You can tell Julie Kavner’s voice changed when she is voicing Marge
Because of pitch change
In the other seasons and the newer seasons of the show, you can really tell that Marge’s voice has gone much raspier than EVER before, a lot of people have said that Julie the voice actress who plays Marge her voice is not what it was before or it’s not the same or you can tell the difference, I heard people really complain about the voice she is using look people do age that’s gonna happen including playing a character for so long, that genuinely that’s what happens when you grow older and voicing a character for so long for so many years.
Marge is my favourite Simpson. She's so dry and hilarious, with both an inner strength and an endearing vulnerability. Julie Kavner is fantastic. Even though there's an obvious shift in her voice, as it deepens and gets gravellier in her older age, she's never stopped making wonderful character choices and giving it her all. In this seasons' A Mid-Childhood Night's Dream, she delivers one of her all time greatest performances.
Here in Germany, the first voice actors of Marge and Homer have already passed away.
Ironically Just wehn the Show
Started to die and
Ironically the new va Sound more Like the Englisch Version
But RIP
I love julie as marge simpson and she really brings humor and heart to that character!
"Here's a woman slowly dying over the course of 37 years"
*funny kazoo music*
Great outro music choice.
5:45 Mr. and Mrs. Simpson is one of my favorite Treehouse of Horror episodes. Thanks, Dave. I also love Sex, Pies, and Idiot Scrapes, and Million Dollar Maybe.
Marge is my favorite of the Simpsons family cause her jokes always make me laugh and she’s retained a lot of her maternal charm that she always had even in the earliest episodes. I can’t imagine anyone but Julie giving Marge her voice. It’s kind of a shame that she’s definitely having trouble keeping the same voice for the fact that it has got to be harsh on the vocal chords (not to mention she also does the voices of the even more throaty Patty and Selma). If she did decide to pass the baton to someone else just for sake of sparing her vocal cords I’d totally get why, but she’d always be THE Marge Simpson.
That my favorite show
The simpsons are the best and the treehouse of horror specials are wonderful!
Somewhere around season 25 - 26 is where it got really noticeably bad. I imagine 20 years from now she'll sound just like Krusty the Clown. Will be interesting to see the update in 2044.
If she wanted to get a replacement they would've a while ago. Something tells me Julies going to voice Marge till she drops dead, more power to her.
Love it.
She was Brenda on Rhoda
Great show!!
I Like Rhoda. It Was The Greatest Show Ever!
@@DaveLeeDownUnder can you do Voice Evolution of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Awesome video!
She sounds like she wants to retire from the show
I think they should do a sequel movie and just end it on the last season
Don't get it when people complain about Marge's voice. It's supposed to sound bad. That's sort of the joke of the character. I am more put off by Mr. Burns's voice. He ironically sounds too old. You could say his current voice fits the character better but I feel sad listening to it.
Well, Mr. Burns’ voice actor is 80 years old now, so it makes sense.
I've noticed Homer's voice has started sounding slightly breathier in the past two or three seasons, but I don't mind the difference. I think his new voice kind of fits his current cuddly personality.
Also if you read this icecreamhero, I'm the person who talked to you on a video about the SpongeBob movies by 24 frames of nick. Side note I always you comment everywhere haha.
💯 You are bang-on. Marge has always sounded gravelly and hoarse, so I can accept her current sound. Mr. Burns feels like a shadow of his former self. He's the only Simpsons character who feels deflated to me now.
No it’s not. Marty’s voice is not supposed to sound bad I mean yes always sound gravity, but it sounds worse nowadays voice is not supposed to sound like that
No it’s not that is not a joke. Marge’s voice sounds like that is her voice actor in her 70s. He will be complain because it doesn’t sound like Marge at all yeah her voice is always sounding gravely and horse but it’s not supposed to sound like this
More please
More what?
More Simpsons Voice Evolution. Including Lisa And Maggie And Other Characters.
"There's nothing about bowling in the play."
"oh, there is."
coool
Her voice sounds like a sandpaper toast sandwich now, god bless her. She getting that paycheck!
Its a shame we all have to grow old but I suppose that's life
& Ms Julie kavner us a good actress
When I used to watch the Simpsons as a kid with my older brother, my mom hated the show for two things:
- its dark and sometimes controversial themes
- Marge’s voice legit gave her headaches.
And this wasn’t the original version, we watched the French dub of the Simpsons and Marge’s voice is even worse than Julie’s voice in the newer seasons lmao
When you'll do Lisa's voice?
Next week
I think it still works. It's not that big of a difference.
I prefered The Simpsons when they were on The Tracy Ullman Show.
Marge is alsome
Why don't they just digitally alter the pitch of her voice?
Jeez
Shes losing her voice, she sounds like shes in pain in the recent cartoons. She needs to retire.
Is julie really going to retire?
I don't know
i wouldn't say pain but her vocal cords are fried for sure
Early Marge kinda sounds like Salad Fingers.
Wow 37 years, at the same job.
lol
How much does she make?
Simpsons is mega money
300,000$ per episode
Yeah she should be given an advance and retirement.Poor lady .
It might be because Disney and Fox are greedy
I really think Marge needs to be recast. Kavner doing the voice for nearly 40 years has clearly taken a tremendous toll on her vocal cords.
Technically closer to 34, not 40.
You’re wrong. She started voicing Marge in April 1987, so it’s actually almost been 37 years.
Every once and a while, I try to watch a new episode. But I can only stand a couple of seconds of Marge's voice because its painful to listen to. I really feel sorry for her.
Thank you/
Let's see if someone can specifically identity which Season did Marge's voice became bad
I'd say around Season 28 is when the voice difference started to get bad, and it's only devolved bit by bit each passing season. Julie's rasp is hard to maintain, especially when you feel like you're using the throat more to compensate for decreasing mixed and head range, so it's an unfortunate consequence of time passing.
Just in this video alone you can start to hear the streain around Season 25 and it just... doesn't get better from there
Simpsons cancelation is near..... please please please please
No it’s not the Simpsons are one of the longest running shows ever it and it still runs today and it has no cancellations. If you want to be canceled they clearly you ain’t no fan.
It's already been renewed to Season 36.
