    Very nice. Interesting too that Miss M is a timeless and universally played reel. Exceptionally appealing. Of course there is the raging controversy of whether it is Miss or Mrs; that argument is often settled in barroom fights.

    • @ShannonHeatonMusic
      @ShannonHeatonMusic  11 місяців тому

      Haha! Ms. M? (And since she's so well travelled, maybe she's covered in tattoos, has huge arms, and can settle all the barroom fights for us!)

    • @piperg6179
      @piperg6179 11 місяців тому

      @@ShannonHeatonMusic yes she could well be settling her own barroom tiffs….i had not thought of that though a tattooed miss is a trifle hard to picture. But, being a victorian or pre-vic gal, we can be sure its either miss or mrs and not ms and certainly not they, them or cis anything.

    • @ShannonHeatonMusic
      @ShannonHeatonMusic  11 місяців тому

      Maybe she was Sister McLeod... settling tiffs (and hiding her tattoos) with the white coif and black veil?

      @@ShannonHeatonMusic whoa! Bad enough feuds are started by the miss/mrs question. Adding an rc/presbyterian dispute to the stew would like pouring gasoline on a fire or tossing a bobcat in front of a dog team.

      @@piperg6179 Amazing. Bobcat in front of a dog team. Bwa! Maybe she was Dr. M...? Or maybe her first name was Missy and everybody called her Miss for short...

    Hi Shannon, in the fourth/ last phrase of the 1st part of the tune are you rolling the hig E. Are you playing E EF EDEF GFED bcba. I'm struggling to get this last phrase of the 1st part.

    this is a scottish fiddle tune.

      @ShannonHeatonMusic  Рік тому

      Hey, Bruce. Love hearing this played by the Scottish players. As you know, it's a strong melody with versions in Scotland/Cape Breton, Ireland, America. A well traveled gem, for sure. Maybe we'll play it together someday!

    • @ShannonHeatonMusic
      @ShannonHeatonMusic  Рік тому

      Also, it really is fun to trace the older tunes. And this one IS old, right? The first official documentation of Miss McLeod's is back in 1810 in the O'Farrell Pocket companion for the Irish Union Pipes. Or perhaps you've found an earlier version still! Love that it went through so many iterations, even before that early Patsy Touhy recording in 1919. Great to keep sharing wisdom about the tunes with one another. Thank you for your passion in the history of the melodies.

      @@brucecollins641 -aha! So Gow had it in his collection before O'Farrell 'pocketed' it. Thanks for that. These tunes do get passed around, for sure. And the Niel Gow version is so much more like what became the American 'hop high ladies' than the version that has been folded into the Irish tradition.
      History is important, for sure. And it's especially interesting and messy when you're dealing with a living tradition. It's interesting to keep learning about what tunes get adopted where, and HOW they become assimilated into different regions. Thanks for helping detangle a bit. (Also, Patie Birnie looks like an interesting character.)
