For year I’ve done just this, and see it a lot where I live as t-1-11 is common. But in reality when trim sits on top of siding it should not be caulked. When they butt together it should. Caulk is a maintenance item which rarely is maintained. This traps water more than anything. Job security for the next guy I reckon. Better to seal the the expansion gap of siding to window with good quality stuff like polyurethane. Never sees sun. Use trim cap flashing for the top, or do a bead like you are but make it a fat angled one as a water table. When using thick trim I make a blood groove whenever possible. But relying on caulk around trim to seal out water is not as good idea as it seems. Think the trend caught on because it looks nice. But this IS NOT a good method.
Do you know of a good how to t1-11? I keep seeing caulking but I want it to be almost maintenance free. I'm installing this on an addition to my house to make it match
Flashing does over the trim on top
Solid idea, I haven’t had a leak yet but that’s a good idea
I dont really caulk extra trim but when i do I wouldn't caulk the bottom. If water some how get in you would want it to drain and not sit.
This is true, I didn’t think about that when I did it

Thanks for the advice!
