Exclusive look at making the Spinosaur for Jurassic Park III

What are Spinosaurs Made of? An awesome look at the making of a 12-ton, thousand-horsepower dinosaur.
The Spinosaur was not only the biggest and heaviest animatronic ever built by the Stan Winston Studios, it was the fastest. "The Spino had to be faster, splashier, and better than the T-Rex," stated engineer Tim Nordella. "The producers wanted something that was going to actually kill the T-Rex, in fact; so it had to be a more formidable character than the T-Rex was."
Don't miss this exclusive 2-part excerpt from the Stan Winston Studios - Behind the Scenes Documentary, and watch the creation of the Spinosaur from design and build to on-set dominance.

If this is so difficult to make they how big was the real one

Would absolutely shit myself
Ded
It's incredible the amount of dedication shown for practical effects. It's a shame that none of it was preserved; it's such a unique art form. I get that CGI is much cheaper and has improved quite a bit in the past twenty years, but it's hard to compare to an actual prop. In my opinion, it's the biggest reason why Jurassic Park's effects have stood the test of time for so long, combining practical with CGI. Bravo to the team.
When you are running away from a thing like this...acting is not needed. Comes natural .
+Yo Momma Yeah :))
Haha true
lol
😂 😂 😂 😂 Yes
@@Perceptence well it kinda doesn’t matter it’s still scary ngl
People said the movie was horrible but I thought it was awesome!
I liked it for sure. It was nice to see two familiar faces from the original movie but the t-rex getting killed disappointed me.
I agree, i just watched it yesterday and i really enjoyed it.
+briandd27 Stop complaining about the Trex getting killed?? Get over it, it lost fair and square! These Trex fans think they will win every fight when the truth is that they can't and there favorite dinosaurs possibly gonna die in the next film so get ready 😂
+Ej Buckingham yeah your right

20 years ago, July 18, 2001 Jurassic Park III hit theaters. It wasn’t the most popular with critics and fans, but it was my first JP movie, the one I remember best from the toy commercials, and the computer games as well. But if there’s only one thing we can all agree on, nobody can deny the heartfelt and soulful effort Stan Winston and his team put in to making the dinosaur animatronics.
The Spinosaurus is a thrilling villain, and far and away Jurassic Park 3's strongest feature. Well done! I rewatch that movie just for the scenes with this big boy.
While I don't like Jurassic Park III overall, I do admit that the Spinosaurus animatronic is stunning, one of the best animatronics ever created! The guys at Stan Winston Studio deserve all the praise in the world for their hard work and effort, bringing dinosaurs to life. Jurassic World has a tough act to follow.
It was used in a shitty way in the movie. It didn't give you the feeling that it was real. It moved like a robot.
+StupendousRecks 65 so... the Spinosaurus still look real then that Cgi crap they use on the Indominus rex
Allan Romero I think that the Indominus looks very realistic compared to other dinosaurs in the movie. And who gives a shit, I.rex is still cooler than Spino.
@@theodorbondoc6345 Irex was a very fake looking dino like it came out of some kids fanfic JP story. Spino had a much better foundation as it was based on a real dinosaur and had a much better design and sound to go with it. The sound Spino made was iconic while the Irex was annoying at best, as it was a very forgettable movie monster sound. Spinosaur actually sounded like an animal almost with its distinct sound design similarly to the iconic Trex roar we all know and love. Irex is a knockoff Doomsday to Trex's Superman.
No he doesnt god does
The fact that you guys still reply after 9 years is insane, much love to y'all, and of course, Spinosaurus instantly became my favourite dino after JP3! Amazing movie!
i dont get why people dont like JP3 .. it has dinos . and lots of them. what else matters
Troppie Man, you are so butthurt cause of that scene ha ha.
Troppie Bitch, we're talking about Jurassic Park Spinosaurus, and that one is huge with giant claws, could easily kill a T-Rex.
Troppie yes it would and then again how would you knoa
Acting, Character Development, Emotions, Realism, etc etc etc. I could go on and on and on. Non stop action doesn’t make a good movie.
"The most terrible grammer" haha hypocrite.
CGI keeps trying to improve on the modelling, textures, lighting and movement, but one still sees the tell-tale signs of something that isn't really there. I'd rather see more investment into animatronics so that actors can react and act next to real things rather than imagine in a green room.
Valelacerte unfortunately as long as practical effects remain expensive to build and take a lot of time as well, CGI is gonna be more commonly used
@@Dill_Pickle1997 Hybridization is the best way I can imagine these following methods: 1) Doing the Godzilla and just making half-sized or quarter-sized puppets for the big Dinosaurs, 2) Making full-scaled foam parts for the actors to interact with and 3) Sparsely using cgi to cover up imperfections or mechanisms.
I agree, practical effects are a hell of a lot more interesting to see in film to me, even if they don't look real they're still such a joy to see.
But CG isn't going anywhere.. Probably ever.
Why isnt the spino in the new ones come on
but animatronics can hurt some,i mean if you keep using animatronics then you might run on a lost
Spino waving its hand at 4:10. It's like "Oh stop it." haha
i always liked JP 3, underrated movie
I saw it in my local cinema when it came out!I still prefer it over the new ones!
Cola Octoling yes
I dont know about underrated, it's still pretty bad. Just not as bad as the newer ones lol the original is still one of the best movies ever made.
I know right and i love the spino and it needs more love and the fact that they havent put in the last films makes me wanna cry
Jp 3 had the best looking dinosaurs but the plot and the dialog sucks
Everything about this movie sucks except for the dinosaurs
You guys brought my childhood to life, thank you.
you need Jesus, badly.
why?
Jesús CobiánArreola why does he need jesus. Just cuz he liked this movie?
Jesús CobiánArreola Hey! If hes a fan; 'coughs' like me. *THEN HE CAN BE!!!*
Too bad the man who build this animatronics died.
I love the spinosaurus and seeing this makes my childhood come to life so amazing.

@auntmkp1947 It's not work when you love what you do. We all get to create toys for a living! And if you like this, you'll love all our other Jurassic Park #behindthescenes videos: bit.ly/1bbmF3K
abdelkarim honing Cheaper? Yes, incredibly cheap. All the life and soul would be completely gone from the creatures. We know when we're looking at CGI and we know when we're looking at something real. Sure a good voice actor can give a CG character a lot of personality but it's animatronics and puppets that truly feel alive to us. I weep for a generation that misses out on these amazing creations in favor of pixels.
***** "but it's animatronics and puppets that truly feel alive to us"
Maybe to the people who build them but not for the viewer. People can tell when its a suit.
OU812 That's not my point, my point is that a puppet/suit/animatronic is actually there on screen. It's tangible, the actors can reach out and touch it and you're mindful of that. But also a puppet or animatronic is directly channeling the 'puppeteer'. It's connected to a living thing and is therefor more believable as a living thing itself. The CGI character is robotic. It's copying the information on how to act alive that was programmed into it. There's no room for improvisation, reaction, anything organic.
***** Fair enough.
Honestly, I look up to people like you so much, its incredible to see the passion behind what you create flow through your words, its so that incredibly inspiring!! I hope to one day work along people like you :)
People criticise this movie, but don’t see the amount of work that has been put into making these magnificent animatronics.
They should put that thing in the middle of a city and see how would people react
Interesting. - David
People wouldn't react. The movements are slow, abrupt, and puppet like. It would instantly become obvious to everyone seeing it in real life. The way it's shot on film and shown only for a few seconds at a time is what makes it life like.
OU812 slow or not a dinosaur is a dinosaur
Alejandro Molina My description was "slow, abrupt, and puppet like". It's ONE description. You can't just focus on one of the words. I separated them with commas for a reason. Geez. lol
+DEMON OVERLORD Yeah So True
It's such a shame this is a dying art style, this would be my dream job but I may never get to work on n animatronic seeing as CGI is taking over!
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
+Ragitsu U KNOW THAT POEM TOO?
Change Change
Indeed. It helps to be cultured in SOME way.
Don't worry. If I ever make a dinosaur project like this, my one rule will be no CG unless 100% necessary, like in the classic first film.
you do realize they used cg dinos in the original JP right? @matt
I am impressed with how detailed it is. When I was 3 it looked soooo real. I am shocked and impressed with how it's made. Job well done
People pass off this movie as an "inferior sequel". They fail to realize that a lot of time and effort was put into making this film using both CGI and animatronics. Animatronics like this are a dying art in cinema. This remains my favorite _Jurassic Park_ film.
Thanks for the kind words. But Animatronics aren't dying. They're making a comeback. - David
They're making a comeback? That's great! Perhaps the CGI is so good these days, I can't tell them apart anymore. It is definitely best to utilize all means of special effects.
Word, codster9! - David
It is also my favori tree
In my opinon animatronics are always better. Except for minor things. But real life stuff will always look better.
It's when you see videos like this, you realise how thankful you are to all the amazing work, those people do, for you to enjoy movies like this :)
The engineering alone is worth an entire book dedicated to it. What an amazing piece of art and mechanics created for the movies. I wish more of this enormous scale stuff was still going on (and that I could be a part of it, of course).
Miserybahamut, Glad you're enjoying these peeks behind-the-scenes. MUCH more on the way! -Matt
DO NOT DESPAIR! As robotics continue to improve, we may one day see a resurgence in practical effects where the "dinosaurs" can actually move around beyond a track.
Ragitsu disney is keeping that vision alive as they are always going all the way in on animatronics
Ragitsu as with the Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom...they used animatronics for big parts again!
You act like practical effects are just better by virtue than cgi. The truth is that you see so much more cgi than you know and you love it because it's good cgi. It's only when they get it wrong that you even notice it's there.
What happened to it after the movie
Saw the spinosaurus in this year's Guinness Book of World Records. Had no idea it had the record for largest animatronic. Big win for JPIII.
Stan Winston's studio has the best dinosaur designs in history.
Such incredible technology and skill that the crew has. You just don't see this in other films. Incredible.
Thanks for sharing the video, Marissa Mares. Part of our mission with Stan Winston School is to help usher in a Renaissance of "Real Monsters." The more people see videos like this, the more they'll want to see a return to these crafts. -Matt
Okay that technology where the guy is controlling the animatronics with his own arm is fucking awesome. It blows my mind to imagine creating this. Do you guys ever step back and be like, "Woah, shit. We just created a freaking DINOSAUR." I think it'd be weird sitting there, meticulously painting each individual scale, then taking a break going to the bathroom or something; when you get back you get to see at the whole thing and it hits you how amazing what you are doing is. I hope that's the case, anyway.
We amaze ourselves every day. It's an honor just to work with these geniuses and see what they do. - David
I love Jurassic park but this one is my childhood movie and I will love it forever🥺🦕🦖💕❤️
I love JP III!
Wow :))
When I'm old and I'm a movie director I will ask YOU Stan Winston Studio to do the animatronics for my movies (if they still existed in the future)! Your work is amazing!
Stan Winston Studio is now Legacy Effects. And they will be around for a long time ;) -Teresa
they obviously prepared this cyborg dinosaur for a Kaijuu invasion, it already has the Jaeger controls
wizzzer1337 but it still be way to small for a kaiju , its like comparing a small lizard to a crocodile
Ryuk he's talking about the jaeger technology of using your hands to move the robot
Ryuk he's talking about the jaeger technology of using your hands to move the robot
even if I only really liked the first movie and it has a special place in my heart since I was a little kid, the amount of work and detail these people put into these dinos is amazing. I was always fascinated by how real the animals looked, and getting to see how they're made just makes you really appreciate the hard work that is behind every dino. gorgeous!!!
Was a film student in college but wasn't able to take any classes like these because they weren't available. Have taken a few courses through Stan Winston School and their great!
Behind the scenes of my childhood
Fascinating. The work put in, is insane! It will take at least 10 years from now for CGI to look anything as real like animatronics
I
2 years to go!
@@Killer99215 not long left
Fantastic! I never thought I would see footage like this. Amazing job, you guys!
These animatronics are fantastic, the design of the spinosaurus is beautiful, you guys did a really great job in taking to life the dinosaurs.
The fight scene between the T-rex and Spinosaurus in this movie was bad ass!
What an inmature kid ha ha.
Sooooo, you think Tyrannosaurus is inmortal and no dinosaur can kill it? Even a Triceratops could kill it.
Those horns can penetrate a T-Rex skin and kill it, just acept it, your dinosaur is not inmortal.
@Silence, slave! actually the trex in jp3 is adult, it's a full grown bull trex, juvenile or subadult is a fan theory.
Black Wolf I agree on that. Had that been an immature Tyrannosaurus you would've been able to tell. The whole fan theory was likely made by the immature Tyrannosaurus fanbase that probably worships the current T.rex that is only still alive for the plot. I personally love both the Tyrannosaurus and the Spinosaurus, but the Spinosaurus was always my more preferred dinosaur in the series.
Imagine if someone walked into the forest and saw that animatronic sitting there…
I absolutely love these videos. The amount of work put into each of the dinosaurs blows my mind.
My new favorite channel. I just subscribed and is enjoying every single video!
Always wanted to do this sort of thing and work here. It certainly was a dream. These look more realistic than CGI.
Your guy's spinosaurus is the best design of a spinosaurus I've ever seen! I love it and the Spinosaurus is my favorite dinosaur and the Tyrannosaurus Rex is my second, Dilophosaurus is my third, and Velocirapter is my fourth. I hope you see this comment and I want to tell you that I love all your work and movies... keep it up! Jurassic Park III is my favorite movie, I guess because my favorite dinosaur is in it. I wish there could a medium sized sculpture or toy, or even some costume for sale that looks just like the JW3 Spinosaurus.
Your Spinosaurus picture is also badass!
Compys #1
Imagine if they made a multi-person mech-suit thing for the Spinosaurus, complete with sounds from the movie!!!
Me too spino is my favorite!
My list of favourite Dinosaurs is similar to yours! For me it's
1. Tyrannosaurus Rex
2. Spinosaurus
3. Velociraptor
4. Giganotosaurus
love the shares! thanks. keep them going please
This thing should be in a museum
As should many famous movie props like the Jaws Shark, the Delorean from Back to the Future, ED-209 from RoboCop, Mad Max’s Interceptor car, and so many others.
I love the 3 movie
and now the 4 movie !! :D :3 \O/
Me to i love it to its My favorite Jurassic Park Film
Respect! I love the film!
Amazing.
Really amazing seeing this.
Stan Winston is a genius.
Love it ❤️
Spino is my FAVORITE dino and they did an amazing job on this!
"So what kind of working have you been doing?" "Oh, you know, just painting spinosaurus tongues and stuff."
This is awesome! Crazy to see how much effort was put into this, and the movie was great. I don't see why it has so much hate.
Alfred Sanchez, coz spino killed a T-Rex and there are many T-Rex fans out there
Alfred Sanchez I agree with you Jurassic World 3 was a good movie people are just jealous because the Spinosaurus is bigger than the T-Rex and stronger they just want the T-Rex to win they'll learn that the spinosaurus is better than the T-Rex I love your comment anyways it made me feel happy deep in my heart maybe one day me and you will meet and we will be directors of a movie and make it the best movie in the world
This is a beautiful piece of work. The masters of the Animatronics
This thing is huge, stan wilston studios you guys are legendary
What these things were actually puppets!!!!
Amazing
Flathead Gg244 they tobots

I wish they tried to test the Dino by picking heaving things up with the mouth and hands. Because why not and it would look great!
So freakin amazing!! Well done 💎👑
This is amazing, love behind the scenes stuff! Reminds me of some props from the Jurassic World live show I saw!
So the dinosaurs in The Lost World and Jurassic Park 3 were not computer-animated. They were robots so they looked more real in the movies.
They used both cgi and practical. Even in the original Jurassic park only used CGI when necessary
Absolutely right, emokid Sixityfour. The #JurassicPark films blended all techniques. This is why the #dinosaurs hold up so well.
i love the spinosaurus
Would anyone absolutely LOVE this job? Watching something come to life detail by detail, sounds like an amazing career
The best in the world! - Balázs
Incredible work again. So much better than cgi and a beautiful combination of art and engineering. Thanks for sharing
Great video! I like the movie.
i heared that the spinosaurus animatronic was so strong it ripped off the trex animatronic head off.
True story. - Balázs
This is honestly so amazing!
Wow. Thanks for all the hard work.
While I may despise JP///, that in no way lessens my respect for what these guys did. Stan Winston Studio/Legacy Effects will always be the greatest visual effects company in history to me.
*Wow that is awesome what a great video thanks*
This Dino was beautiful, I gladly accept jp3 because the effort put to it. Plus they made spino my favorite Dino .
I really appreciate all their hard work 👍
And this is why all these dinosaurs in Jurassic park movies look so real, because they actually created dinosaurs, unlike these other new movies that have computerized animated dinosaurs! Those movies are crap compared to these Jurassic park classics.
I luv the spino
Subscribed! MORE of there please!
OMG... This is incredible!
this dinosaur looks really cool.the only thing i didn't like about jurassic park 3 was my favorite dinosaur lost,i mean i can see it being a 50 persent chance on both sides depending on the circumstances, but if t-rex bit spino's neck, spino'd be dead.on the flip side,if spino slashed and hit t-rex with it's arms,it'd really hurt.j.p.3 i think it was an over all cool movie.i like how the diinosaurs look.i'd give the movie a 9/10.i liked the dinosaurs, the sounds they made, and even the detail on them.any one who has an argument, please keep in mind that this is my opion, and i will not appologise for it.to you who posted these behind the scenes videos thanks for posting them.
Actaully I like how the used the Spinosaurus in Jurrasic Park 3 as the main antagonist. It was about time they used their imagination and creativity and used a bigger meaner dino. I mean seriously the T rex bandwaggan eas just getting boring and yawn. We've seen it in every dinosaur movie. The only reason they every dinosaur movie in existence always features a T rex is because everyone knows it. It's too easy to make a dinosaur movie without avoiding the T rex. I would like to see other dinosaurs being used for every JP movie that somes out. Not just t boring T rex all the time
Also, honestly even in real life I can see the Spino winning realisticly. The t-rex can bit hard but thats really all it has going for itself. The Spino is bigger, heaveir probably stronger and more agile with a bigger scare factor and a multiple array of weapons. Its teeth are curved inwards so that it doesnt just crush tear the T rex but grips it so once it bites it doesnt let go and proceeds to claw the t rex's neck. I think it's claws will probably do a little more than just "hurt". Thos things would probably really slice up a T' neck.
"Boring T-rex?" Those are fighting words, Lucas Smith!! But seriously... We see your point, it's always good to shake things up. -Matt
inosaurs arent boring in general. But when you paint a painting with the same colour over and over again it does become dull and boring. When I heard about Jurrassic Park 3 I remember thinking well' it's going to be the t-rex again. But no they suprised us with the Spinosaurus which is an even cooler dinosaur. Now that was unexpected. I like nice suprises like that. You could tell they were trying to suprise us and develop our tastes in dinosaurs when that movie came out.
Thank you!It was about time to bring in somebody new!
Could you Stan Winston School verify something I've wanted to know for years? Ok so the Spinosaurs you built was a lot larger then the T-Rex it fought and killed in the movie, but that T-Rex seemed small for its size, what I am asking is, was the T-Rex made for JP III smaller then the T-Rexes from JP 1 & 2?
I read that they used a Trex from JP2
maybe a teen trex
It wasn't a full grown Rex
@@PU8698 actually the trex in jp3 is adult, it's a full grown bull trex, it's on the script that hasn't changed.
Jurassic park III was better than JP2 , and better than both the new movies in my opinion. A sorely underrated film.
Xcellent work, stan winston and his team rocks
Stan Winston School on your website, it states that there was a real "battle" shot between the refurbished male Rex and the Spino that was "as violent as it was in the film", the Rex's head coming right off. Since the movie fight is CG, I'm very curious if there is video of this anywhere released. Also: Why wasn't this (and these other vids) included on the BluRays?
Hope you guys can answer that! I would love to see you guys letting loose with these titans!
Tenucha Stan Winston School I would also like to ask (sorry!) if you can say what organic or un-organic sounds were used to create the Spino's roar. It's been pretty well coverd about what sounds were used for the other dinos (I think) but I have never been able to find what was used for the new guy here.
Tenucha, We're sure Universal Studios must have that footage in their archives and we hope they will release it for the fans to see one day! -Matt
Tenucha, While Stan Winston Studio designed and built the full-size Spinosaurus, the sound effects were handled completely separately in post-production and we honestly have no idea what sounds were used to create his roar. Sorry. :( -Matt
+Stan Winston School hi how do you guys make such a realistic dinosaur like spinosaurous looks very amazing cool and scary not bad for an animatronic :)
Stan Winston School With the strong success of Jurassic World, and the dominating Star Wars VII, I'm really hoping this gives a push for more anamatronics in Jurassic World 2
This is how CGI ( all computers) destroy jobs....... People dont get it yet....
It looks absolutely amazing.
Sadly, the Spinosaurus is mostly remembered for that super goofy scene of sneaking up with the ringing phone in it's stomach and just weirdly standing there 😅
So Amazing!!
When I saw jurrasic world I was disappointed all the dinosaurs were cgi 😂 wait I know what you are thinking! Honestly I wanted to see some animatronics like the older jurrasic park movies. When the original trex showed up man I was like wtf is that it looked skinny and lacked the fear and illusion that it was there.
t rex forever
This is a cool movie you guys are awesome
Always amazed by your job!
Jurassic World, it's gonna be all green. (you know what I mean).
No its not...Its confirmed to have animatronics too.
Darkness1984 Oh yeah I totaly appreciate the 5 animatronics theyre going to have
Just as many as they had in the old movies...
But the old movies only had a few dinosaurs. Jurassic world has like 30 dinosaurs and 5 animatronics.
***** which dinosaurs where aninatronics
Thank god for men with beards in a shed
This is amazing : )
amazing and fantastic turn out
I don't get the hate towards this movie. it's not that great but it's far from the worst movie of all time. you think the fight was unrealistic? you know what else could never happen? cloning dinosaurs.
Cloning dinosaurs could actually be a thing if we knew how to reconstruct damaged DNA samples, but it will take some time to figure it out...
Wow thats complete job well done.
When I was 11 I would watch this on repeat back in the day. 🤣
22 and still watching it.
Too bad they put so much incredible work in to this film, and yet the outcome pretty much sucked compared to the first two movies.
Yes, but this was not their fault, they worked very hard and gave us amazing special effects. The problem in the movie is on the script.
Aj Say it was the poor plot, unimaginative writing and lazy directing, it was poorly thought thought through though individual acting and scenes were very good they didn't offset the unoriginal plot
stan winstons T rex animatronic looked much more real ten spino still nice work tho.
The Spinosaurus animatronic was an hydraulic animatronic or something like that, so they would use it in water.
Imagine if creators did stuff today, with as much passion as the making of Jurassic Park 1-2-3
This is so AWESOME!
Jurassic park 3 Spinosaurus is Hybrid 🙄😒
it's confirmed that it's not a hybrid
