I led demo rides for Moto Guzzi (Piaggio) during the 76th and 77th Sturgis Rally. What a great job taking riders up and down Vanocker Canyon for the best demo ride of the rally. We didn't have a Norge, but we had the Griso and Stelvio which had the 1200 engine. Very impressive motorcycles. I, personally, have owned five MGs and will always have at least one in my stable.

I have owned my Norge since 2007. The power, just like Rolls-Royce would say, is adequate. This is my fourth Guzzi since 1979... I have about 220,000 combined miles behind bars of Guzzi’s.. they’re not Japanese perfect. Everyone I had had some little quirk. But I’ve never been stranded. I’ve never had an engine failure. I’ve never even had a fork seal fail..I’ve always had other bikes at the same time, ninja 600, KLR 650, V Strom 1000, gold wing gl 1800, Honda pacific coast (which I commuted on for 23 years).. now there’s an example of a perfect motorcycle. My Pacific coast. Perfect, yet boring. My GL 1800 Goldwing. Also perfect , and boring.
My Norge is anything but boring. It reminds me of having a radial engine airplane, or a steam locomotive. You know you’re operating a machine. It sounds and feels like a machine.. it’s alive...those bikes I mentioned that I had at the same time I owned my norge.. they are gone except for the goldwing. that’s for riding two up. The norge is for all other riding. I don’t care if it’s gonna rain, I don’t care how windy the road is, I don’t care if it’s interstate travel. my norge is a reassuring sure footed stable comfortable friend. You don’t have to marry the dealer when you own a guzzi..In 42 years of guzzi ownership.. The only parts I ever had to buy from the dealer or Internet, were, valve cover gaskets, from doing valve adjustments which takes me about 40 minutes with three common tools. One set of wheel bearings that were a little rough, a couple cables ,oil pressure switch on 2 of them, (a common issue , guzzi needs to change suppliers )..One headlight/sealed beam on my SP 1000. And of course tires, brakes, filters..
I tried one BMW in my life ,k1200LT..I won’t go into how flawed and expensive and that evil front suspension is,because i will be here for hours I will say, I will never ever buy another bmw...
Guzzi’s are not Japanese perfect.. they’re not Japanese fast, they’re not Japanese cheap. But Japanese motorcycles have no soul..no character,..no personality...every one of my moto guzzi’s has a soul...They are a living breathing thing with a heartbeat.

issues I had it that seems to be common with the 07 Norge
unless you have a strong newer 18 amp hour battery, they don’t want to start/crank over sometimes if they have been sitting for a week.. The problem seems to be that there are too many other systems on that one circuit that feeds the start relay. The fix is, cut into the wire harness right by the battery, there is a yellow wire that feeds power to the start relay on the right side of the machine near the battery. The fix was to eliminate that feed source and wire the start relay directly to the positive terminal on the battery.
when you change the fuel filter which is inside the gas tank, you are going to need very special clamps that you cannot reuse, they get damaged taking the filter out. That system runs at 60 psi, so you have to use the actual clamps supplied by Moto Guzzi
when you change the filter in the gas tank, convert it to a metal filter. The filter in the gas tank right now from the factory is plastic, and ethanol in the fuel attacks the plastic. If you search online you can find one of the filters that will work with the Norge, I believe it’s a filter I bought at an auto parts store for a BMW..
there are horror stories of the oil pumps failing on the Norge made in late 2006 through the beginning of 2007. A certain serial number batch. I ended up buying a used 2008 oil pump on eBay from a machine that only had 6000 miles on it. I believed the mileage because the guy was also selling the speedometer housing, and it showed 6000 miles because he was selling the engine too..
I called about 10 Moto Guzzi dealers across the country and I talked to the service departments at those dealers. Not a single one of them ever heard of an oil pump failure.. I think what happened about the oil pump on the Internet was, those people ran their bikes low on oil, or they started their machines on the side stand and let them run for a long time. I hear that is not a good thing to do to let them warm up like that..
I added bar riser/spacers under my handlebars to raise the bar is about an inch and a half. Great improvement
make sure you get both keys. There’s some type of electrical procedure whenever you’re going into the computer that you need to insert each key for something I don’t know what it was but I remember seeing that on the Internet and in the service manual online
those machines have a self diagnosis display if you can tap into the computer it will display that on screen
The code you type in using the left handlebar switch is
      28315
with that code, you can get into diagnostics and see what the computer has stored in the code error messages
things like, oxygen sensor, oil pressure sensor. It will tell you what parts are sending an error code when your check engine light comes on. You can find out what those codes mean online. I had a code 07. That was the switch that detects oil pressure. Whoever Moto Guzzi buys those from, they need to change suppliers because I have replaced three of those switches on two of my Guzzi’s.. they are a little bit of a bitch to change, that switch is down in the V between the cylinders in the front..
if you ever have to take a lot of the hardware out of the way to get in there to change the air filter or the fuel filter, be very careful not to drop any of those screws that you remove with a hex socket because they are made of stainless steel. And when you drop them down in that valley between the cylinders, you can’t see them, and a magnet will not pick them up.. those screws hide in the fins of the cylinders..
I have a perfect stock seat for a Norge if you are interested let me know..
I also have a case of AGIP, IRIDE, 10 W 60 motorcycle oil specifically recommended by Moto Guzzi for the Norge if you are interested let me know. I paid $18 a bottle for this oil
.. this oil has a different feel from other oils I have used over the decades. It has a more slippery feel.. I have heard that Mercedes-Benz and BMW and Audi are also using 10 W 60 oil in their cars
Moto centric makes a tank bag that fits the Norge gas tank perfectly. I also have one of them if you’re interested. It fits the slope down to the seat better than any tack bag I have seen.. since the tank slopes down to the seat, the Moto centric tack bag conforms to that shape, meanwhile the top of the tank bag remains level. Almost like it was made for the Norge gas tank.
Norge has ABS brakes that can be turned off with a portion of that button on the left side of the gas tank in the fairing. That is a wonderful thing because, I had a BMW K 1200 LT with ABS. I was on a downhill paved road that had a lot of cinders and gravel on it. when the BMW computer detected slippage, it completely turned the brakes off. I had no breaks at all. With the Norge, you can turn off the ABS so you will have conventional breaking when you were on snow, wet grass, loose gravel roads. if there is ever a failure in the ABS system on the Norge, you will automatically have conventional brakes unlike the BMW. When the ABS system fails on the BMW, you have no brakes at all front or rear
you can get a dipstick extension tube and a new dipstick to check the oil on the aftermarket. That is a pain in the ass to check the oil on a Norge because you have to remove the left lower fairing to get at the dipstick. Stupid design
The Norge is cooler in hot weather if you leave the lower fairing panels on, but the machine really isn’t hot in hot weather in Les you’re sitting at a long light or in rush-hour traffic which I would not ride that bike on days that I might run into that like commuting..
when you buy new valve cover gaskets when you check the valve adjustment which takes less than an hour. you will never have to buy gaskets again if you do this trick I learned as a Honda mechanic. This was a bulletin from Honda to all of their service departments.
Get a can of aluminum rustoleum paint ..Do not stir the can, do not shake the can. Do you want to use a screwdriver or something to get some of the gooey thick paint from the bottom of the can. Put on some plastic gloves and work that into the gasket on both sides, clean the top of the cylinder and the bottom of the valve cover, and when you’re ready to close up the job and reinstall the valve cover , install that valve cover gasket while it is wet with that gooey paint you got from the bottom of the rust oleum aluminum paint can.. that gasket will not stick to the cylinder or the valve cover gasket, it will not leak, and that gasket will come right off next time you have to remove that valve cover for any reason. I have been doing that for over 40 years to every paper gasket I ever work with. In fact, I still have that can of aluminum paint that I bought back in the 1970s, that’s all I use it for is to coat paper gaskets with that aluminum impregnated paint…
Gaskets ain’t cheap anymore. I’m about 10 years ago, I was going to do an upgrade to my Kawasaki KLR 650.. some type of a chain tensioner in the side case of the engine. I went to the dealer and picked up oil and I asked for a new gasket. It was just paper, that gasket was $58 for that single Side cover gasket.. I did not buy that gasket, I was just very careful removing the side cover and I was able to get the side cover off without ripping the gasket.. that gasketsprobably over $80 now..
I miss my Norge. This is the first time Since 1979 that I have been without a moto Guzzi.. The 07 Norge is better than the 2011 and newer with a four valve head, there was a lot of problems with that valve train in the four valve engines when they first came out, I don’t know what all had to be upgraded but it was not cheap.. I think the word got around about those four valve engines because there is a Norge that was traded into a motorcycle shop privately owned not a dealership. They have about 20 motorcycles for sale at any one time all used. That Norge has been sitting there for many years with the four valve head…
My Norge was red. I think that was the second most beautiful motorcycle ever made. The first being the 1986 Moto Guzzi Lario. That motorcycle was jaw-dropping gorgeous when I first saw one at a moto Guzzi rally in West Virginia that I attended all but two years starting in 1980 all the way through till the virus hit.. That rally takes place every year in a small town that only has one traffic light right on the Hayao River south of Weirton West Virginia at a fire hall. One year there were 586 moto Guzzi’s there.. that was 1987. I remember because the national rep was an engineer that worked for NASA they got laid off when the Challenger space shuttle blew up. So he took the job as the rep for moto guzzi/Maserati, he showed up that year on the all new 1987 Lemans which was a 1000 that year.. that is also where I saw my Norge for the very first time in 2007. I have got to test ride it. I didn’t buy it that day, but oddly enough. I ended up with that very bike two years later used from someone that lived near me. Now there’s a coincidence

@@Jodyrides you don't need to cut the harness to fix the startus problem. Pull the yellow wire out of the plug to the starter relay, insert a wire in its place that goes direct to battery +. problem solved. Oh, and that fuel filter won't need replaced for 100k at least, in developed nations.

An excellent review and accurate as usual. I have one, an 8V Griso and an old Le-Mans. Loads of character a very pretty IMHO, heavy and electrical gremlins but worth putting up with as Guzzi are one of the few genuine 'nice' bikes to own. Add a Termignoni or GPR slip on and they sound awesome, but a word of warning, do NOT remove the db killer / baffle unless you remap the ECU or add an after-market fuel controller. Think 'Harley Davidson' without the T*wats that normally own them and no rip-off servicing & after market parts that cost a fortune is a good description of Moto Guzzi.

Love my 14. Ride daily, travels and packs 2 up excellent. 3,000 mile trips. Bullet proof. Good in the twisties, removed center stand and curb feelers for clearance. This machine can perform and hold its own respectfully but it’s up to the man to bring it out. It would be nice to have the gearing of my griso. When I really need to smile I take the buell Ulysses out. My multistrada was a great machine just too expensive for how much I ride. If you mated a Mercedes with a corvette you get a Norge. Traded Stelvio for Norge couldn’t be happier. 65000 in three years biggest repair was the block pan gasket and a false fault code that comes and goes on its own.

The ONLY reason I never bought one is the lack of "cruise Control". I tour extensively and no cruise for me was a definite deal breaker, maybe is was for others and that's why they quit making them. Same wisdom from Italy that the new Mondello's electric windshield needs to be run through a screen menu to operate vs a designated switch on the handlebars. I still have hope one day Guzzi will get it all right.

I’m sorry I have very little experience with moto guzzi so I can’t give you any tips. But my general advice is to test ride both and buy the one that gives you the biggest smile.
      Thanks for watching Bruno

Bought the Norge today! 30 minutes test drive was enough to convince me. Great ride!

Would you say it's comparable to the Honda Deauville? Does a good job, just a bit boring?

    • @Darkvisor

I haven’t tried that one so I can’t compare. Sorry.

Why do you find it boring? Would a louder exhaust change that?

    • @Darkvisor

It was just my general opinion of the bike. The feeling. Nothing to do with the sound.
      Still a good bike though.

Great bike, but will leaning forward position cause back pain or something of we ride for a long time?

For me it does. I can't say for others though.

Back pain is associated with more upright bikes (cruisers and and touring bikes), lean forward is actually better for your back. Leaning forward transfers your weight to your hands, hence pain in wrists, so there is that.

I ride a 2014 Norge. Very comfortable. I’ve done 4+ hour rides no problems

No problems for me. I am 6'2" and find it more comfortable than 2010 Vstrom I had 4yrs. Fuel consumption worse as is to be expected with larger engine. Comfortable on Norge 😎

Looks like a capable and understated bike. The front's a bit ugly (those headlights...ughh) but otherwise looks nice enough if not jaw-droppingly pretty (that would be the Griso, but it doesn't have the easy touring capabilities).

I don't talk in my test ride videos because I don't know all the info when I ride them. Plus I don't really like to talk in general =P

If you want a dead reliable bike that runs like a sewing machine, get a Japanese bike. Milque toast. Pablum. Soul less. But if you are ready for a machine with a soul, try a Moto Guzzi

I agree. I've always referred to Japanese bikes as white goods, like fridges or dishwashers. They're great at what they do, you use them every day, they never break down, etc. But you never think about them when you're not using them. They're just appliances. Not a Guzzi.
