    About Me 👇:
I'm Dani Kilani, a Canadian Medical Student. I applied to only one medical school during my third year of my undergraduate degree and gained my acceptance to medical school. I spent three years at the University of Western Ontario studying One Health, an interdisciplinary approach to health problems that looks at the intersection of human, animal and environmental health. Since my undergraduate degree, I have been passionate about applying theories and principles, in a practical sense to improve the way I think and act. I hope you find the videos on my channel helpful in taking your thinking to the next level!

Did you do the Scholars Electives program at Western University? Would you say it is beneficial?

HI Sayyam! I didn't do the Scholars Elective Program at Western, but I had many friends that did. It definitely adds to your workload, but it can be a great way to get your foot in the door with research. That isn't to say that you need to go into Scholars Elective to be involved in research but it opens up some doors

Hey Dani, great video as usual. I'm currently freaking out about my upcoming interview at Calgary 😭 It's my first cycle and didn't even expect to get an interview so I hadn't really prep much. Should I smile and be conversational? Or should I be serious and be professional? This whole online interview is making me nervous 😔 I read from premed101 that Calgary interview wasn't something they were able to prep for, so I'm quite scared of what is to come! 🥺

Hey, congrats on the interview! It’s okay that you haven’t prepped much yet, I think I spent 2-3 weeks prepping for around 6-8 hours a week which should hopefully be doable for you as well. Calgary’s interviewers tend to be really friendly, I think the key is to be you. You’ll also be spending most of the time answering the question, but be sure to introduce yourself like you would an in-person interviewed. I always say that it’s worth having an approach to interview questions so that you’re less nervous on the day of, but you’re unlikely to be able to guess what questions you’ll get. So there’s no point memorizing answers. Hope this is helpful 😁, and best of luck!!

Does entering med school after only three years of undergrad put you at disadvantage for experience in med school(guaranteeing residency afterwards)? Is it hard to do MCAT in your second year to be able to apply and enter after three years?

I went into med after three years of undergrad and my experience in med school has been similar to my classmates. Knowledge wise it’s a fairly level playing field, everything you need to know will be taught to you. If you’re able to get into med school after three years of undergrad, your study techniques should be good enough for med school 🤞. I’m still a first year so my understanding of the match is a bit limited. From what I know, residency admissions committees in Canada mainly look at your ratings from clerkship time spent in a specialty as well as your interview to make a decision. It can be nice to have some extra experiences under your belt if you’re looking to get into the most competitive specialties, so in those situations having more research involvement could be helpful (i.e. a masters or PhD could be beneficial)

Also, in regards to the MCAT you can definitely take it after your second year. The difficulty is that you need to also write your applications that summer. I was able to do this, but I only had the time to write one application

@@DaniKilani but regardless say you don’t get accepted to that school after third year it’s a learning experience for next year. Plus can’t you still use the same MCAT you wrote in 2nd year to apply in third year if it’s a competitive score? Like say you got in the 90th percentile when you wrote in 2nd year you can still use that score when applying in third year.

@@isco8075 I think you should definitely apply in third year if it is an option for you. Like you said it is a great learning experience, you're able to figure out ways to improve your application for the next year (since you are allowed to re-use the relevant parts of it in the next cycle). Canadian Schools haven't yet put an expiration date on MCAT scores, so you're able to re-use your MCAT Score for as many cycles as needed (assuming this doesn't change)

@@DaniKilani thank you greatly for the advice I’m still in grade 11 so I got a long way to go. To be honest I’m still confused on when I should start prepping for these things. I live in Saskatchewan so research and all these volunteer opportunities aren’t available for me yet. Also our school curriculum is different from other places. But I guess I’ll just keep an open mind and take all the chances I get once I get into uni.
