That's a work of art! You say you wont win any prizes for your carving, but I've been to many craft fairs at home here in Ireland, I'm pretty sure you'd win a prize or two. It certainly wouldn be well received as a Celtic wedding gift, beautiful!
One of the things that I have always respected about you is the fact that you go from the tree to a completed project the majority of the time. That is dedication to the craft. Nice work sir.
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for such a detailed video covering your strategy, tactics, and on-the-fly modifications. You don't know how much encouragement this provides to novices like me. And thank you for all your great YT & IG content. Go Irish!
Excellent video and a lovely bowl. I'm a bowl carver myself but haven't ventured into carving designs. I'm not sure fine carving is my forte but I plan to try. The mistakes you let us see will help me dodge a few mistakes. Thanks Chris!
Walnut? Very beautiful product. Walnut has a very beautiful texture of the core. Fortunately in the part of Russia where live I such tree is growing. I'll try to do something like that.
I like the board idea @ 23:03. Im always needing ways to hold or stabilize my pieces, cuz I never know what will take my fancy as far a what I choose for project. The only constant is, its usually for someone else, and made mostly from wood. The music stand had leather and metal hinges, but everything else was wood; even if it did take 3 years to finish!!
aunque algunos vídeos son viejos eres admirable!!!!! si hasta parece que ya salgo corriendo a buscar troncos para hacer lo que haces tú imitación por supuesto felicidades!!!!
That is a real nice adze your friend made. A bit large and long for most accept the largest bowls. It's a beauty just the same. You have done a great job on the bowl. I made my first bowl last winter, spoons were my "thing" up until trying to do a bowl. As I was putting finishing touches on it one of the handles on the bowl it broke off. That was a disappointment after more than 20 hours of working on it but I learned a lot on that first attempt and the next will be better. I will be back at another bowl this winter. Carving wood is so therapeutic. Time just slides by. Well done video and bowl. Thumbs up!
Great instructor! Thank you. I'm restoring some fine art sculptures that I inherited. Watching vid's for ideas. The super glue idea piqued my curiosity. Doesn't super glue need a very thin layer and pressure to work? How thick and deep can you spread the super glue? I'm doing some projects on my own with tools I inherited from the sculptor. Using some green wood as well as restoring 20 year old+ fine art. What a great hobby/job working with wood is!
I mainly use super glue for its deep penetration properties to seal cracks at the source and then is wood powder to fill the space. Good luck with your restorations!
Chris, I found you by accident. I also found out you are friends with my Birthday Twin, David Clark. He is the one who told me he know you. I really enjoy watching you work. I will most likely never use the skills you are teaching, I enjoy the learning. Keep up the great work, sharing you talents, and teaching other!
Great to hear Chris!!! I'm working on mine too... like my channel mascot hehe. I started one with only hand tools (yeah!) but didn't finish... have to keep going. One guy you should check is Tom Stanton (ua-cam.com/channels/67gfx2Fg7K2NSHqoENVgwA.html). He took the subject to another level haha. But I also keep looking for reference videos (History and Discovery Channel stuff). Also... there is a really nice tool to make mock-ups that is www.virtualtrebuchet.com/ Again... beautiful work man! I'm a big fan for a long time and really enjoy your videos! Cheers from Brazil!!!
Chris this is by far my favorite video yet. I know how much you love your drawknives you should check out Curtis Buchanan on UA-cam he's a Windsor chair maker and he uses a drawknives for everything and a ton of hand tool he only has a power lathe and bandsaw. I think you would really like it. He has a whole series on building a chair
I've been given permission to harvest some fallen (both cut, and natural) trees in the park up the street from me. I will need to watch your urban logging video to get tips, and pointers. Thanks for the in-depth video hear, BTW.
@@ChopWithChris A lot of coniferous trees. I would be lying if I said I knew for sure what they all are. I am not the best at identifying trees, and actually want to get better. I know there is red pine for sure, and pine is literally in the name of the park, so that's kind of a dead giveaway.
@@ChopWithChrisThanks. Yeah, I know it is not good for outdoor stuff, or things needing to be durable. Pretty soft, so carving might be OK. Not sure what I plan to do with it, but, it is FREE WOOD! Kind of like gift horses and dental checks on this one. I am sure I can find a use.
Nice video, Chris. Wow, the bowl looks great. That's the nice things done on the hand that have allowed small "mistakes" (which annoys other people), they make the bowl unique. Thank you for showing how you made the bowl. It was very interesting and nice to watch you. How about when you put out where you gave the bowl the rough shape. Did you attach them with straps if you force an infinite force? For inside one could take a Morakniv paring knife and / or an arrow SwissMade Scorp to get a finer surface? I really enjoy watching your videos because I also work a lot with hand tools. :-)
Awesome work. Can I ask why you hollowed out from the outside and not from the inside? I would of thought using the woods natural shape would have been better?
If I understand your question right I hollowed in a direction that left the lighter sapwood on the outside so I could carve it and provide a contrast vs the dark heart wood
LOL! I like this side better! Nice work Chris. I appreciate how much time goes into a bowl like that. BTW, I think your Irish are playing the Wisconsin Badgers next year. We might have to have a bet with some kind of carving wager involved. :)
Chris do you have a video or plans on how to make the holdfast you made out of wood? I have my great, great grandfather's workbench and it has the square dog holds like on your bench. it did come with two steel pegs but they are not tall enough for holding bowls. Thanks!
Awesome build. Where did you get your wrist bands ? How do you control your depth on the inside of the bowl ? The last one I tried to make I went to deep and came out the bottom, ruined a beautiful piece of Pecan.
Kevlar is certainly more durable. Have you considered birch bark? More fragile but easy to repair! Don't mind me, I'm only pestering for the video. I don't have to personally do the work!
@@ChopWithChris It is a beauty. I think it will be a while before I work up to anything that size. But it was fun watching the technique. Thanks for posting it!

Because everyone has a different way of working. :-)

What is cold this wood, nice color has in side?

2020 and I’ll go that game Lambeau Field but probably will not bet 💪🍀
fantastic bowl Chris im curious to know your irish connection ie the t-shirt and celtic carvings which are very cool
My ancestors are from County Kerry in Ireland and the shirt is for the university I root for - Notre Dame.
@@ChopWithChris kerrys fantastic place ive holidayed there a couple of times im only a couple of hours away thanks for sharing
The sound of that wood being chiseled in fast-motion is music to my ears
oddly satisfying
Stay tuned. 2 hour unedited video coming.

It's about time Chris! I told you on Reddit, I had subscribed and was expecting videos.
So demanding! 😄
It is beatiful
Thank you!

It’s done. I’m holding the videos while I work on the charity next steps.
that is great Chris, thank you for all you do.
You are most welcome.
Curiosity is killing this cat. What is she going to do with it? Display it or serve food in it? It turned out fantastic!
Thanks. Each season she will decorate it differently. It’s right in the entryway where everyone will see it.
I love that bowl I would put so much fruit in it. It’s just so beautiful.
