    Thank you again for a very thorough break down of the current situation and putting the data into a context we can all understand. US Media is awful on many fronts and I ignore them on principal. Risk assessment is a constant and ever-evolving process for each individual. I ride motorcycles, scuba dive, and own property in Ecuador. Others choose not to accept any one of those, much less all of them. In the wise words of Linda from the Donkey Den in Santa Marianita - Stay away from drugs and politicians you should be fine.

    Thank you. The information you have been able to pull together is very helpful... I was planning on moving to Ecuador this spring, but in light of the violence and disruptions in day-to-day living that has arisen over the past few years, I have put everything on hold. Fact is, I contacted 8 friends from different parts of the country and the general consensus was to wait 6 months to a year before even considering making a move. Now, after hearing your information, and hoping to see a continued improvement, I will tentatively reschedule my move to this fall. The irony in all this btw, is that I live in a suburb (about 30 miles away) of St. Louis... Wow! Even I am amused at my trepidation. Once again. Thank you.

      @KrisandMike  Місяць тому +1

      Certainly nothing wrong with waiting. You should only do what you feel comfortable doing. Also depends on where. Manta area, I would wait the six months. Cuenca is safer than most US cities of that size. Situation is fluid tho. An exploratory trip would help you decide. Lots of different opinions out there. Take care.

    It's good with the raw data instead of fear mongering, gossip etc
    I am positive when it comes to Ecuador and, without knowing much about the politic in the country, I believe the lovely country will come out well and, I think the Ecuadorians made a good choice by deciding on the current president... Will. Definitely keep following.
    Thanks again for sharing and, have a good start of yet another new week.🌹🌹🌹!!!

    Excellent video. I was looking to compile metrics and stats myself but could not find what you have. (I am not a you-tuber. Just another Canadian living in Ecuador who is constantly having to put things in perspective to family and friends who think we are crazy going to Ecuador). So you have saved me the time. Thanks. Now all i have to do is gather the Canadian city, province and country metrics to compare with Canada. Accurate data and metrics don’t lie. Key word.. “accurate”. Cheers!

    Another very thorough analysis of the issues around crime and safety. I like that you included some data and talking points about the broader concept of risk as it relates to lifestyle choices. You are providing a very valuable service to anyone who is considering whether to move to or from Ecuador. My Bottom Line: I won't consider joining a drug cartel and make sure I continue listening to my wife to avoid domestic homicide. That should keep me relatively safe.

    The coast has always been more dangerous, with Guayaquil being the crime capital. It's interesting to see how the trends haven't changed through the decades. Personally, I find the homicide rate useless. When it comes to Ecuador, I'm more interested in robberies, kidnappings, extortions, and home invasions. The average person is more at risk for this than being killed in a cartel shooting. Can I ride a bike safely? That's the kind of information that these crime figures never tell you. They only tell you about murder, and they dont even break it up! Like you said, domestic violence isn't separated from criminal-on-criminal murders, thieves shooting you for your watch, etc. If they broke it down, for example, 70% is cartel-on-cartel, 20% is domestic violence, and 10% is violent robberies, then I'd say Ecuador is pretty darn safe. These rates don't tell you much, to be honest. When I think about moving to Ecuador, cartel violence doesn't bother me. It's random crime against the population that worries me. Alas, not usually information provided to gage a country's safety. Murder, murder, murder. That's all they care about.

    • @KrisandMike
      @KrisandMike  2 місяці тому +2

      The problem is the murder rate is the only reliable information that is kept in most countries. It is also indicative of other crimes. Thanks for your comment

  • @fredwyese
    @fredwyese 2 місяці тому +5

    Where I live in the Serria the murder rate is less than the Great Lakes area I lived. Also, deaths per 100k can be junk if there is a large variance in population areas. Guayaquil/Guayas has 4.4 million +/- population, so if a guy loses it and takes out 5 family members it is a small bump in the rate per 100k but, Zamora Chinchipe has about 110,000 population so if another guy takes out 5 family members the rate would jump by 2/100k. Whereas in Guayas the rate would only jump .1/100k or so. the high rates for some of the small provinces can be drastically altered by a little gang violence, but in a large area the 110+/100k murders are truly horrid. Bottum line is location, location, location and always know your surroundings. The sky is not falling but be aware and educated. There are places in USA you don't go, and it is the same here.

    Great information, Mike! The mortality rate due to obesity really hits home for me. There are many reasons we chose Ecuador, but one of our top reasons is health. Our American lifestyle was literally killing me slowly. We are beyond happy with our choice to move to Ecuador. It may not be the place for everyone, and that's okay, but to broadsword the entire country as dangeous is inaccurate and hurts local economies. If the country is going to get a handle on reducing crime it needs the benefit of strong local economies that deter people from choosing crime as the only way to feed their families.

    Thank you Mike for your great and accurate work in explaining homicide numbers. As ecuadorian I am very upset for what is happening, almost entirely due to drug (cocaine) trafficking from Colombia and in a lesser extent from Peru, through Guayaquil and some coastal little fishermen towns, to Europe, Central America an to the United States. Cocaine is a big business. Even in Europe and the States mafias have grown very fast, causing homicides not seen before, and are being fought by police. The reason that explains at least 95% of the homicides here is the war between 3 or 4 bands, that represent same numbers of mexican and colombian cartels. They kill each others members and colaborators, pretty much in a similar way as in Chicago 1929´s mafia war, but in a larger scale. This homicides are mainly confined to several cities and neighborhoods in this cities. The local band Choneros (working for Sinaloa Cartel), was the most important band here til 2020. Its main headquarters are in Manta, Manabi province, and since 2021 is being challenged by other bands like Lobos (working for Jalisco Cartel), Tiguerones (Colombian cartels) and Pepes (not yet known who represent). They are in a harsh and violent dispute over the control of the main routes and logistic issues. In order to weaken the other bands, they kill and snitch each others shipments, which generates more revenge. The army and the police are doing a good job but it will take several years of continuos work to reduce them to their minimum expression. The Choneros grew silently for one decade without violence but Jalisco New Generation, in 2020, decided to enter the arena in Ecuador.

    Thank you so much for the break out of the statistics and how to interpret the data the media likes to fear monger. Was so helpful and informative to understand by city and then compare to US cities. We did a 3 week motorcycle tour all through Ecuador in late 2022 and only felt unsafe on the outskirts of Guayaquil and that was the middle of the day. No way would I ever drive through that city at night. I also would feel the same about driving through New Orleans at night and I’ve lived there. We are planning on coming back to Ecuador next year as we were not able to do the coastline between Manta and Salinas. This video helped quell my concern about coming back. Thanks so much for your videos! We are looking forward to visiting the Olon area.

    What's your honest opinion of the Vilcabamba and surrounding towns? My wife and I live within 45 minutes where you were in Canada and are seriously considering an investigative trip to the province of Loja. And, if we like what we see, a move shortly after.
    I'm curious as to why you picked the coast as we always associate the coast with a younger , more boisterous crowd.

      The coast was first and Vilca area was second for us. Loja area too. Honestly we wanted the climate and the ocean. The coast has different areas with different characteristics. We aren't city people so we stayed away from Salinas and manta areas. We like the green lush vegetation where we are. But that means less sun. But compared to where we were in Canada plenty for us. Vilca we never went to yet so I can't really say to much. Beautiful climate and surrounding hills. Wow. Loja area beautiful as well. I would see both and see what your heart says.

      I think you have a misplaced concept. The murders are all among drug dealers, narcos and those who deal with them. Also, sadly, too many are femicide - deaths of women inflicted by husbands / lovers. I've heard of two violent expat deaths here over the past six yea and one was strongly believed to be due to a personal issue. If you dont go to Guayaquil, and live a normal life, its better than just about everywhere else. I live in Cuenca - I go shopping, I meet friends, I go the Historic Centre, have coffee and have never ever been threatened once. I dont go out at night, but then, I didnt in Australia, either. Perhaps you could come for a stay of a few weeks, and see for yourself. Every day is quiet, and peaceful.

      That information is not published. I can only make an educated guess. Expats are welcomed here so no hatred or anger. The only exception would be people who try to make Ecuador like the USA rather than trying to fit into the culture. There is crime against richer people, fancy phones etc stolen. Ecuadorions and expats alike. But vast majority is cartel issues.
