I knew Captain Prom from Aeromexico, a real gentleman and an example to every pilot. Although very polite he was a stricter for regulations and never deviated from them. I saw him at the pilot’s parking on the day he was commencing this flight pairing and will never forget his kind smile when saying goodbye. Rest in Peace dear friend! 💐
So tragic and unnecessary. How touching are your comments. Where did you see him last?
Thanks for sharing this, these people all had friends and family around.
Sorry for your loss
I was an air traffic controller for over 30 years and actually worked with Walter White (the involved controller). He was a very good controller by the way. What is hardly ever mentioned is that the Radar system in use at the time was 50's technology and unless the aircraft was large or had an operating transponder it was virtually invisible on the scope. Also ground clutter, especially near cities and highways, was a big problem and you couldn't tell what was a target and what was clutter. That small aircraft did not appear on the screen, especially since it was not supposed to be in the TCA. The last line of defense is pilot's are required to "see and avoid" but at those closing speeds not really feasible.
I will never forget that incident.
I was a Reserve Investigator with the Los Angeles County Department of the Chief Medical Examiner-Coroner. I was also sent to the crash scene in that neighborhood (a week after the accident) to pick up additional remains.
I had to identify the body parts, tag and catalog them.
The incident is permanently etched in my memory.
Thank you for this historic documentary that was so respectfully done.
IN THE NAVY SOME OF MY SHIPMATES WERE SENT TO PICK UP MARINES BODY PARTS IN ONE OF THEM WARS I THINK IT WAS SOMALIA. ONE GUY TOLD ME HE WAS PUKING ALL THE TIME...BUT AFTER HIS EXPERIENCE HE BECAME A HOSPITAL CORPSMAN.
Hello Jeff. As a 38 year airline pilot nearing my retirement, I remember this crash like it was yesterday. I was flying from Palm Springs to LAX minutes after the crash and remember seeing the black smoke and hearing the associated radio chatter. Have you researched the PSA 1771 crash in Paso Robles in 1987? There is quite a back story to that one. Well done as usual and you always show great respect.
Thank you Scott. Did you have such fears as this? Every time I fly I fear a crash. I had heard about the crash in Paso Robles but want to do more research on it. Thanks for the great tip!
Oh, I just left a comment on flight 1771!
@@jbenziggy Jeff, I just posted above that as the result of this accident, light aircraft operating in dense air spaces be equipped with Mode C transponders, which can report their altitude. In addition to that, the FAA required that all jets in U.S. airspace be equipped with a traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS) so flying is much, much safer now.
Think of the coroners office having to put human part together for some sort of identity.
@@jbenziggy I do too in a way there have be mil planes who have crashed on the freeway and a few private ones
I was 13 years old shopping with my family at the La Mirada swap meet when I happened to look up and seen the tail and the small plane falling straight down from the sky. The DC 9 went spiraling forward. I ran back to tell my parents what I had just seen, but they didn’t believe me. A minute later there was a black column of smoke coming out from across the freeway where we were standing. As soon as we got home, we turned on the news and seen that there was a plane crash. I will never forget this day. True story.
Wow amazing I live right by there... thats crazy
That’s very haunting. I was 13 too (day before my 14th bday) and I’ll never forget. I can’t imagine how you felt. That’s trauma
@@RyanHemming they looked like toys falling from the sky , it didn’t seem real
I was at cypress Swameet
I lived @ bloomfieldxAlondra back then, just north of the 91. I knew something was up when I heard all the news choppers buzzing around. That's the main LAX approach corridor.
I was living in Whittier at that time, the pilot of the small plane got lost and was looking for the 405 freeway to get his bearings and mistook the 605 for the 405 and headed north ending up in the L.A. airport airspace. This is why there will never be flying cars for the masses.
I too am very concerned about people flying in cars because it would be a nightmare.
even though in Sci-fi movies they cris cross each other at high speeds with no incidents. 😂
My friends lived down the street from this horrific accident. They remembered the amount the debris and the horrible smell of jet fuel. A very black day. The widows Mary Wong and Theresa Estrada bonded together after the tragedy and are still friends.
Eerily similar to the PSA 182 crash
Wow really
My aunt was a mail carrier in this neighborhood, she was shook, I was ten and I remember her crying to my grandma about body part everywhere, feet in yards...
I remember finding a eyeball. In my grass after the crash
Same. I have friends that also lived down the street and saw the whole thing happen. They never talk about it though.
Its crazy how one man's decision in a small plane took out so many lives in one day
Yes, just feet off would have made the difference between life going on and life ending! Tragic to the core!
Good point! One man's mistake took out dozens of lives and destroyed a neighborhood!
You got me with that pic of the Wongs, still sobbing, they were my neighbors, the older son Derek was my age, probably took that pic. He had gotten off the plane in San Diego because he was in college there. I'll never forget talking to him at the funeral. It's burned into my memory. Thank you for the respectful video and letting me know where the memorial is, I will visit it soon.
One of my classmates and his brother were on that Aeromexico plane. We were getting ready to start 4th grade and we were still in shock over seeing the Challenger disaster months earlier. Then starting the new school year finding out 2 students at my school died was something ill never forget.
My family & I had gone out to breakfast that morning. We had driven down Carmenita where the engine came through the wall just 10 minutes before the crash on our way home to LaPalma. Helicopters were in the sky for hours. For being so close to the scene was eerie & and every time a plane went over the house, it caused anxiety for years.
Hello Jeff,
My Father was a Fire-fighter on scene that day. He talked about that day a ton.
My brother was also dispatched here. He had PTSD from what he saw and smelled
I was a young Marine based out of MCAS El Toro visiting Knotts Berry farm with my folks, walking thru the parking lot. I witnessed the collision from a distance....not fully comprehending what I witnessed and saw the remains of the small plane spiriling down looking from a distance, like a smoking streamer. The sound of sirens coming from every direction directly afterward still haunts me to this day.
I moved to Orange County, California (the first time) in 1989. I worked with a guy who used to fly light aircraft. He said that because of this accident, all light aircraft from this point on had to have a Mode C transponder to report its location. He said at that time it was too expensive and many light aircraft pilots had to give up the hobby because of that.
I was an EMT for goodhew ambiance working that day. We were dispatched to that crash scene and I saw things that I can still vividly remember. It was all so surreal something I will never forget it was pretty horrible.
I pray you find healing from that day and can hopefully one day put those images to bed🙏💯
@@joemedina1323 will you actually kneel down at the end of your bed , put your hands together & speak some

@@wayneandrews9298 yeah to your mother🙏🙏
I used to work down the street at ICI over on Marquardt rd. A first responder spoke about all of the body parts. Just horrific.
My brother was also dispatched there and he had PTSD from it. He felt helpless
For about one agonizing hour, I thought my dad was on that AeroMexico flight. I was 18 and was working at a shoe store in the Stonewood Mall in nearby Downey when coworkers started talking about the plane crash. I called my mom and she was trying to get information from family in a little town in Mexico (where telephone service was sporadic) to learn if my father had flown out on that day. He hadn’t. He flew back home on the following day. My work manager (who was like a second father to me) let me sit in the stock room until I heard back from my mom.
Jeff your research is so amazing and you report things with such compassion. You are a remarkable man. Thank you and God Bless you for bringing these stories to us. Never to be forgotten.
Thank you kindly. It appreciate the nice compliment! Blessings!
Thank you, Jeff, for a respectful, gentle remembrance of all who perished in that 1986 air disaster. Bless Cerritos for honoring all who died in that accident. I appreciate seeing all of the sculpture gardens. It is a lovely memorial.
Thank you very much, Mary. Greatly appreciate you leaving the comments.
My sister and I witnessed the Delta L1011 crash at DFW airport the year before (1985) while driving down state highway 114. We both recall every detail of those few days.
I remember this crash from my home in Australia. It was my daughters 4th birthday and I will never forget a female resident at the crash site being interviewed and saying "you wouldnt believe what I witnessed from my back door".....I hope she was able to get past it. RIP to all.
I was 10yrs old & living in La Palma. My dad was outside doing yard work & heard the two planes collide. I remember him yelling & we jumped in the car & drove as close as we could get. The cops had everything closed however to this day, I still remember seeing the plane hanging out of the block wall, onto the road. I can’t believe it was in 1986. Thank you for sharing this perspective so many decades later.
I was living in Buena Park at the time...we were on our way to GEMCO in Cerritos before Target bought them out.
I was 8 years old going to Raymond Temple Elementary...I lived on La Palma & San Rafael which is basically LA Palma & Valley View
What a memory for you both...I grew up in West Hollywood and back then all these plane crashes n earthquakes n fires terrified me. Only the TV and the newspaper, neighbors to pass bits of news along. These people are being remembered today.. Horrible for them n families. I am older than you but your mentioning Gemco blew me away. Do you remember Fedco ? Maybe it was gone by then ...was it on LaBrea or LaCienega.. Fedco was next to the Sees Candys factory. Fedco was only for military members. Precursors to Costco and Sams Club n all the smaller bulk shops that were..past tense..
We're about 50 now and remember like it was yesterday...
@@hollywoodsaint57- what a tragic day. You mentioned, GEMCO - I feel old now! My father got my first glasses at GEMCO
I remember this event when I was 12 years old. We lived off of Clyde Park Ave. We were watching TV when we heard a loud boom. We walked outside our front door and saw a huge column of smoke. I attended St. Catherine’s Military Academy for boys and discovered that a student was on that fated flight from Mexico. I’ll never forget that. May they Rest In Peace.
This was so eerily similar to the PSA 182 crash
I lived on Carmenita and South St. That day my brother and I were laying down in the backyard looking at the sky when we noticed the planes were on a direct course with each other. They had a mid air collision and it looked like the planes were coming down above our house. My Dad who happens to be a physician took us to see if he could help anyone. Unfortunately, nobody survived and we saw body parts everywhere in the trees and on rooftops. I will never forget this day.
Oh how horrible. I can't imagine what you may have been thinking. How old were you at the time?
@@jbenziggy 6 years old at the time.
I lived across the street on Rose street. My mom and sad saw it too. Body parts everywhere. 😢
Thank you for your video, Jeff. I'm a Cerritos resident, and I was living just two miles away on the day of the crash. I was 8 years old, and quite fond of commercial jet liners already. My mom took me as close as we could get the day after to see what we could see. We were able to walk down Carmenita until we arrived at a chain link fence which had been installed to keep the public away from the investigation. From there, I could see homes with their roofs gone, and I recall a red painted tail of the DC-9 standing erect within the neighborhood. I remember feeling grateful that it had not landed on my home, as well as feeling sad for those lost.
I grew up about 40 minutes from Cerritos and in 1989, I worked at the Cerritos Mall for a short time when I was younger. A friend I met through my job loved there and told me that even though the crash site was rebuilt by then, he knew of people who would be tending to their lawn or garden and finding bone fragments. That has to be unsettling to say the least.
What city did you grow up in? And if you lived that far away why did you decide to work at the mall?
@@marley1995you know people drive in LA? I once worked at the Hollywood Bowl even though I had to commute for 45 minutes. A job is a job right?

Each time I fly, I have incidents like this in the back of my mind. I don’t fly often, but when I do, I understand the risk. Driving is quite a bit more risky, and I drive in freeway traffic every day. Live every moment! May those who perished in Cerritos on that day rest in peace.
I actually remember this quite well. Torrance Airport, Zamperini Field, is very near where I grew up. I've worked right next to the field. At the time of the crash I was taking evening classes in metallurgy at Cerritos Junior College, only a few blocks away from the crash site. The smoke and flames were still visible from the parking lot when I got to school that night. I was working as a member of the technical staff of North American Aviation, Rockwell International, in El Segundo. I was in the Metallurgy and Failure Analysis Group. I didn't work the crash myself but I knew and met several people who did. The pilot of the Cessna was an arrogant and inexperienced pilot who was clearly to blame. Nobody had much sympathy for him. A horrible detail I remember is that one of my colleagues said his head was imbedded in the wreckage of the AeroMexico empannage when they were piecing the wreck together. They couldn't remove it until the wreckage was all accounted for, put together, inspected and cleared by the FAA as it was embedded in the metal.
LoL.. Obviously his head was in the wrong place..
Like I've always said: if you can read something out of it, it has an author.
I lived right up the road in Hollywood Riviera and in 1986 I went to Riviera Elementary school. I remember I was getting my haircut in Redondo Beach when I saw this on the news....tragic.
Yeah thanks for validating the ire I feel towards that guy. Silly as he perished, but still, it didn’t have to happen but for his poor judgment, caused by arrogance or who knows what
So sad & avoidable. Thanks for respectfully presenting this tragedy, as you always do in your videos.
Thank you for your nice compliment!
The overhead before & after photos were very powerful. Such an unimaginable disaster.
I tried to send up my drone close to the 1986 aerial photo but was off a bit. It still was a nice effect! Thanks for your nice comment!
It takes a great deal of compassion, and respect for those who lost their lives, those who lost loved ones, to tell such a horrific story like this without going into tabloid hyperbole. Thank you for this program and the respect, restraint you've shown. 🙏🦋
I used to tow banners over the L.A. area. You'd be surprised how many times I've almost had a midair (even with towing a huge banner that could be seen miles away). I've even had ATC take me into paths of airliners on final approach. Flying is dangerous and that's one reason why I got out of it.
Love how you tell the stories of these people who had perished in the awful crash and to show the memorial’s as well. Thank you. RIP innocent souls ❤
RIP
To the passengers and crew of Aeroméxico Flight 498, the two passengers and the pilot of N4891F, and the 15 people on the ground
thank you for doing this - I know people that perished and went to their memorial service. I also knew one of the recovery workers (LASD) too that was on duty in that neighborhood. Just like the "Newhall Incident" I strongly agree that this should not be forgotten. Rest in Peace J. Wong, S. Wong and dad.
Oh so tragic. Were you close to those you knew in the crash?
Thank you Jeff and Sarah for sharing this tragic story. I remember how tragic it was and it was very sad to see all those bodies being pulled out of bags. As usual you always handle it with class. We had a crash the following year in the Detroit area with a plane crashing near or on I-94. Only the little baby survived. Thank you both for teaching some more history.
I was there providing Emergency Support For The Red cross, La county Coroner I Set up the Emergency Field command post and field offices for the coroner I remember it like yesterday. It was a awful to see this. still Haunts me today Every time I drive down the 91 freeway. Plenty of Stories from the people I worked with too graphic to describe. I wish the best to all who were involved.
I would imagine that it's something that stays with you forever. Thanks for playing an important role that day. What a horrible tragedy that I hope never happens again because of the systems we have in place now. Bless you, Barry!
I was an EMT at that time but was off that day. Several of my coworkers went and saw some horrible things.
Years later, I got called to a gun range in Torrance because someone took his own life. Turned out to be one of the guys I worked with who was at the crash. We didn't do critical stress debriefs back then, which is probably a factor in why he never recovered from the trauma.
Then, in 1991, I responded to the US air crash at LAX. Still no debrief afterward for those of us were there.
I'm still a first responder and part of my agency's Peer Support Team, so I'm glad we're addressing things now. Unfortunately, a lot of agencies and ambulance companies still don't.
I was 911 Dispatcher for many years. My worst call was a 5yo who'd gotten into a corral, spooked the horses, and was stepped on. It was a rural area, I was on the phone w/the grandmother for 7-10 minutes until our first engine got there. Everyone on scene tried their best to save her, including the Air Ambulance, though there was little hope. The Battalion Chief requested an immediate debriefing of all involved. My Chief told me to go, I said I was fine...I was not. I'm forever grateful for that three hours, can't imagine without it how much worse that call would haunt me. I hope your peer group sessions include the folks who have to first respond for the First Responders. Thank you for your service. Stay Safe Always .🙏
@anniebieber19 Thank you.

I was apartment sitting for a friend of mine that night a few blocks away. I went home in the morning and had to pass by the area. I didn't see any wreckage but you could sure smell the jet fuel.

Thank you for posting this video. I remember this crash. Just days before I had a very disturbing dream. Having grown up in nearby Norwalk, I traveled regularly on the southbound 605 fwy passing Cerritos. In my dream I remember driving from the on-ramp onto the 605 south when I was suddenly driving slowly to avoid running over debris covering all lanes of the freeway. I couldn’t make out what the debris was, but with a closer look, I realized it was human remains. This nightmare, I believe was a premonition as several days later the crash happened. That day was my parents 40 th wedding anniversary, and we were all headed to the beach when we learned of the crash. Seeing the black smoke, we drove on by on the 605, the same segment from my dream. Later when the details were reported on the news, the carnage described at the scene was like a flashback to my nightmare. The difference was it hit a neighborhood, and not the freeway. We knew a family that lived nearby, and thankfully they were safe. Sadly, many lives abruptly ended and people were displaced. I haven’t talked about that day much , but I’ll never forget the vivid dream and the eerie similarities .
Such a horrible event that affected so many people in that area and Americans who were in sorrow across the land hearing about it on TV. May it never happen again but sadly planes do crash all over the world with devastating results. Thanks for sharing, Michelle!
Thank You Jeff, for your insightful and respectful story. Your "overlay" of the neighborhood from above, at 7:20min. to 7:35min was enlightening. I have never heard of this air disaster before. I was living in LA at the time. It surprises me that something this significant could have happened so nearby and I never heard anything about it. Many years later, as an adult, I have driven down Carmenita ave many times without any knowledge of what happened there.
It doesn't take long before history like this is forgotten or lost. I imagine in 100 years nobody will have known what happened there that summer day in 1986. Thanks for watching and adding the comments!
I believe this had happened around the same time as the helicopter accident that happened on the film set that killed the little girl from poltergeist and 2 other actors
I believe the girl from Poltergeist you are referring to passed from a medical event...and the helicopter crash may be the one on set from the filming of Twilight zone the movie that 3 perished ...one adult and 2 Asian children actors...the adult actor was Vic Marro
I have never forgotten about this story ever since it was told by my best friend, who grew up in the area. I lived right across the street from this when it happend. It was horrible. Prayers for everyone who lost their lives that day. 😢
I remember a plane crash down the street from where I lived in Mar Vista, Culver City area. It was October 1976. The planes collided over Culver boulevard and Centinela avenue, I think it was maybe one plane and a helicopter, or 2 planes, I don't remember I was pretty young, about 11 years old. A huge part of one of the planes landed in the street on Culver boulevard right in front of the Venice Police station. I was home at the time down the street, and it sounded like a bomb went off. I saw the black smoke. My brother and I ran down the street to see what it was. I could see part of the plane in the middle of the street. Back then there were still railroad tracks on Culver boulevard there. I walked over the tracks to take a look, and in awe I started to step backwards, as I stepped back, the back of my shoe hit something, I looked down behind me and there was a big bloody chewed up looking thing which looked to me like a dead dog. Later on I realized it was a torso of a human. At that age I didn't know what happened to bodies when they got into plane crashes. I always pictured bodies intact. Then I came to find out there were body parts all over the neighborhood 😢 the wreckage was all over the neighborhood also. I think it was a plane that had taken off from Hughes aircraft that was on Jefferson Blvd at the time, and maybe another small plane coming from Santa Monica airport. I don't remember all the details. But I do remember walking down those railroad tracks after it was all cleaned up, I always walked down the railroad tracks to get to my friend's house, and seeing that they left human flesh behind 😢 I remember it like yesterday and I'm 58 now.

Later reports specified the crash site on Carmenita Ave and 183rd. I was relieved my parents were affected but was equally sad to hear of the lives lost. May they all rest in peace. ✝️
Jeff you always have a great sensitivity when doing stories on these terrible tragicall situations, at least the city saw fit to honor these lost souls. I'm from San Diego and my grandmother lived within blocks of the PSA crash in 78, our family went through a living hell until we knew she was okay. I remember driving to the area because my family was so worried about her. She seen the devastation first hand and it had stayed with her until her death just a short time later. To this day I cannot understand why this city has never put up a monument for the people who lost their lives in this tragedy, the only thing at the crash site is flowers and a small remembrance placed there by the people who lost loved ones in and around the crash site. Maybe someday the city of San Diego will show some heart and put a permanent memorial there. Sorry to burn your time but I wanted you to know that you are very appreciated for bringing these things to our attention. God bless you and Sarah for all that you do.
Like when he said the bodies were obliterated?
My friend and I use to practice baseball in the very field the small plane landed on. If not for having been called into Disney to work that day (I was 21), I would have been in the infield where the small plane crashed at that very moment and would have seen the jet come down a few blocks away. The Aeromexico jet landed two blocks from my friend's house. The whole thing still kind of freaks me out, even though I was not there.
I remember that well, i was 17 and we flew to LA in oct 1986 to visit relatives and remember everyone still talking about it. Thanks for sharing Jeff and Sarah 👍
Thanks again for your research Jeff and your respectful presentation, well done.
Thank you kindly
There were many factors that led to this: a junior air traffic controller with less than a year of experience, the distraction of a third small plane entering restricted airspace to the north, and, importantly, outdated technology.
I remember driving by carmeninta Boulevard traveling westbound on the 91 freeway about 1 1/2 hours after the crash happened, I remember seeing all the debris and the yellow covers over the bodies, this is one thing I’ll probably never forget
My lord what a tragedy very sad.
Brilliantly done video Jeff and done very respectfully.
I remember hearing this from my then siblings, how horrible family members were waiting for their return trip that never happened just imagine what their lives could've been like to this day

I remember this fateful Saturday well. I was living in nearby Costa Mesa at the time. So tragic. Later that same day, a massive riot broke out at the OP Pro surf championships in Huntington Beach. A wild day in Southern California history, and not in a good way. May those who lost their lives that day rest in peace.
Another fantastic video guys. Well researched and the production just keeps getting better 👍🏻
Thanks a ton! We appreciate the good words!
To see the place now its hard to believe how much tragedy happened there. Very sad video but well done Thankyou Jeff and Sarah for sharing it
I was in my mother's house in Cypress and heard an explosion. I looked out of the window torward Cerritos and saw a large billow of smoke. I immediately drove over to it and on the Carminita bridge officers blocked Carminita. I could see most of the carriage. They had all the news crews across the street in the basement of an office building.
I lived in Los Alamitos and drove to the crash site that day ( I was 17) It was a war zone, yellow flags to show bodies (parts). Just really unreal for my teenage mind to understand. PSA flight 182 was worst if that is humanly possible in 1978. Plane’s fuselage opened on impact spilling the passengers like “ sardines from a can” a government agent said. Body parts were found up to a year later....
