      Maaaannnnn, you said it! That is absolutely the most off putting trait about him. I mean here’s this white kid from the west coast, Oregon to be exact, that’s acting as though he knows all there is to know about this hustle life, thug life, gangster life. So he’s listened to rap most his life and watched some movies and now he’s the top gangster? Look how obsessed he is about east coast drug game and culture. How many gangsters and kingpins come out of Oregon? None I’ve heard of. If he’d just humble himself instead of acting as though his listening to rap equated to real experience or knowledge he’d be liked a lot more. But he can’t, he wants to fit in soooo bad and seem so down he acts as if he’s lived that life because he pushed some weed in Oregon to some white kids. Big difference than pushing crack in NYC to D.C. Just chill Johnny. You don’t need to prove yourself.

    I worked alongside Mr Heyward in the same facility on Rikers Island. His book Corruption Officer is a very good read. While much of what Mr Heyward states is true he left out how COs on Rikers are also brutally attacked by inmates. The vast majority of Correction Officers in our facility were outstanding individuals. Mr Heyward made some bad decisions, while he was lucky to only get a two year sentence for cooperating , he still answered for his bad decisions and tells a very compelling life story that many can relate to. While myself being retired for 14 years after working 20 years as a NYC Correction Officer, my personal opinion..Rikers Island is to be FORGOTTEN!!.

      Not just the city, the country and especially our Justice system and prison system. Innocent guards being jumped so they can be beaten, stabbed, or even killed. Dirty guards bringing in contraband from something fairly soft like tobacco or electronics, to hard stuff like drugs and weapons. Finally the worst…Evil guards regularly abusing prisoners by destroying their stuff and generally making their lives even more miserable, to beatings and even sexual assaults, torture, and murder. Meanwhile these places are somehow supposed to be rehabilitating the people who committed the crimes that put them there. Smh, broken indeed.

    Thank you for this. I must say though....
    You really REALLY need to release an uncut/unfiltered version of this. Not sure why you said he can cuss than went ahead and beeped out all his cuss words. Many times, I had to rewind to guess what he was trying to say, and when listening to it in the background, since the floor noise is so low, I couldn't tell if he was pausing his speech, or it was silenced out. This likely isn't going to be monetized anyway; but if so, release both please!!
    Thank you for this amazing podcast anyhow.

    I worked at Rikers in 1988-1989 as a
    Plumbing contractor upgrading to higher capacity Hot water heaters. We were in the
    Open Barracks 60 inmates. The C.Os. were supposed stay w us in the bathrooms while we worked. The Big Mama Female C.O.s would disappear for 2-3 hours at a Clip, leaving us two plumbers alone with 60 inmates Thanks B----. I was 19 Built and a tough Queens kid and my partner was about 40. Two Tours in Vietnam, Tattoos, 1% Biker..also played Pro Football. They call.him PITBULL.He'd give them cigarettes so they liked us....Thank God we
    Never got attacked . We got friendly with this big Italian C. O. 6 foot 5 325lbs..Former D 1 Defensive lineman...Scarred up fists 👊 as big as Cantelopes. He was cool but LOVED the mayhem and violence. He proudly showed us his multiple scars and stab wounds. He was gleeful, giddy and very proud of this. He said the best part of a week was suiting up for the Goon Sqaud "to break motherF'ing heads!! ." Matt NYC

    A FEW CORRECTIONS (No pun intended), if I may: For the commenter that took exception to the title of prison "guard," please know that this is the appropriate terminology, since the reality is that none of these people are hired to "correct" any prisoner or any part of the system. They are there to "guard" the prison's security and ensure that its inmates do not escape. Secondly, when a guard just arbitrarily assaults one prisoner just to strike fear into other prisoners, that is called Assault in the first degree. A crime! And remember, Heyward says this was done randomly! Then he spoke about a secret squad of guards who are selected to beat up prisoners on personal vendetttas. These guards used to be an exclusive "white boys club"
    that took great joy in physically assaulting their predominantly black prisoners. And when the system had to hire more black and brown guards, those new recruits had to prove themselves (like Heyward) by beating up their own childhood friends and neighbors. So are these the people that deserve to be called "correctional " officers?

    • @taharqa332
      @taharqa332 5 місяців тому +1

      Yes. They "CORRECTED" the problem(s) that occurred ON THE SPOT! "Corrections Officer" is in fact the "correct" nomenclature for the position because they "CORRECT" issues as they arise. A Prison Guard sounds more like a person "GUARDING THE PRISON" and not the actual inmates.

    I was on the verge of homelessness when hired by corrections. Inmates never bothered me. Many were decent men. Some helped me out. Fellow staff slept with inmates, brought them contraband, helped them escape, and snitched on others. I saw food trays leftover on the delivery cart. Knowing they were being returned to throw out, I grabbed one for myself. A woman manger ratted me out. My supervisor dismissed it. Cops hated us because so many CO's get arrested. Corrections was more racial than in the military. I was happier quitting that schit job than when getting hired.
    I'm a runner and run 40 miles weekly. On a very hot day, I saw a Rikers CO running while pulling an automobile tire. This was a physical feat like a Rocky Balboa fight. That officer was with ESU. He was very competent, kind, and strong. Good man for the job.
