These planes, as with the Abrams tanks, are for long term defense. Too little too late is a very misinformed statement. Ukraine needs to ability to deter future aggression, whether they retake the full Donbas or not. Not everything is focused on the short term. Thank god we have military experts who understand this.

During the Korean war, the Soviet Union sent advanced fighter jets to North Korea. They were painted with North Korean colors, but were flown by Soviet pilots. That was not seen as some "escalation," so following the Russian sent precedent, fighters are more than fair game to send to Ukraine.

    • @jmhorange

You can do whatever you want to your enemy except dictate how they respond to your actions. They just have agreements, except russia not fulfilled their end of bargain by capturing whole Ukraine in 2 weeks. Sullivan very upset, his place in Rosneft is further with each day. The F-16 is not the right issue! The immediate key to unlocking all these problems is to send the long range missiles, that can be fired from the ground, to break Russian logistic lines in Crimea and the land corridor. Already, today ISW is reporting that Russian logistical lines are barely functioning in Crimea due continual missile bombardment from the Ukrainians. My God!!! Finish them off!! much of what it now holds and releases all claims to the rest of Ukraine which will be folded into NATO and the EU.
The post war Ukrainian state could than be armed to the teeth with NATO weapons and have NATO troops from the US/UK/Poland stationed

well it's planned the first delivery of 6 end of year (2023), when will they fly, depends on the pilots also. but they will initially most likely be used for protecting the cities from slow and low flying "cruise missiles" they can spot and engage them at longer distance then ground based systems which are limited in detection radius by the curvature of the earth. this is btw also a fairly easy/low risk task for the newly trained pilots, so gives them more IRL experiance for later offensive attacks.
but importantly is that this a huge part of Ukraine airforce switching over to NATO standards, so they can join later. its a long term effort (+5 years), to rebuild their airforce

@@delta_glider4362 Can we stop with this "wunderwaffe" nonsense? The only "wunderwaffe" that has existed in the modern era are nuclear weapons. No one is giving Ukraine those. And if someone claims that one weapon given in limited supply will dramatically alter the course of the war, they're wrong. However: When people say "HIMARS has had a significant impact on Russia's logistic operations", they are saying something that is substantially true. Nevertheless, this statement is commonly met with some glib and vacuous response that includes the word "wunderwaffe".
Rant aside, you'll note the "may not be finished" in the article you quoted. That's not a guaranteed timeline. Based on what I know (I'll admit I'm not an expert, but have some insight here) some pilots will be active before that. The fact is, training is complicated and not all training is created equal. Some pilots have trained for and prepared for missions that other pilots are not at all competent to perform. It's like how a guy with a bachelor's degree and 1 year of experience is not the same as a guy with a master's degree and 5 years of experience.
Ukraine getting F-16s within the next few months creates obstacles for Russia 6 months from now. It probably creates worse obstacles for Russia a year from now. And so on. This doesn't mean Russia has no means to overcome the obstacles... they do... but it does make things harder. And generally, the fact that the West is going so far as to supply fighter jets to Ukraine is an indication that other forms of support will continue for the foreseeable future.

Mig-21 is a single engine, single seater multirole supersonic fighter aircraft introduced into the Soviet military in 1959 .. Most people are of the opinion that a Mig-21 doesn't possess the combat/operational capabilities to take down a F16 which has more advanced characteristics and belongs to completely different generation . However, the Mig-21 bison used by the Indian Airforce is a largely modernised version of the aircraft matching the operation capabilities of the fighting Falcon . So it could have well shot down . And could've done it easily . Besides, the best plane is the one with the best pilot inside .
