How to change the BMW X3 X-Drive Transfer Case Oil. Fluid change may also require resetting the fault memory and control unit adaptations. Video shows resetting VTG Transfer Case adaptations using diagnostic scan tool.
Symptoms may include:
BMW Fault Code 54c6: Worn Transfer Case Oil (BMW xDrive Transfer Case Fluid) that needs to be replaced. This code may not trigger the illumination of a warning light on the instrument cluster.
New parts and supplies referred to include the following BMW part numbers:
- Transfer case Fluid, BMW p/n: TF 0870 83220397244 (83 22 0 397 244) SAE 75W
- Sealing ring, BMW p/n: 07119963308 (07 11 9 963 308)

IF 300ML WERE LEFT IN THE OIL CAN, THEN YOU DON'T HAVE 700 ml IN THE TRANSFER CASE AS YOU HAVE A LOT IN THE tube....!
Great video. Thank you. After changing the fluid, and resetting the codes, the oil wear code still would not clear. What might cause that?

The video shows the mech holding a bottle of BMW 75/90 gear oil. That’s not what you put in the transfer case. Put BMW DTF in it. It’s like $60 for a liter.
You can use 75/90 oil in the transfer case. If you want to go to BMW and spend 60 Bucks then go for it but there's no point. Clean oil is the key.
Well, that's why I'm here... For this comment... I have 1 L left from my front differential and I was wondering if I can put it in my transfer case... That's what I thought too, since it's gear oil...

Question(My 2007 x3): My transfer case was changed to a used one and it removed the ABS/Brake/4x4 lights from being on. Now I hear a scratching sound from the back that was NEVER present before. Do you have a professional opinion what could be happening or what could be checked?

Is there a low cost way to do the adaption reset without buying that expensive scan tool?
I believe the Schwaben scan tool does it.
The Schwaben Scanner, also known as Foxwell NT510 can reset transfer case adaptation. I just found the path and completed this on my 2007 X3. First, in the Main Groups select SERVICE. Then select DRIVE. Then select TRANSMISSION CONTROL VTG. Then select OIL Change. Then you will see text stating to turn ignition on and do not start engine, select OK. The you will see text stating that next step is adaptation, select OK. I could hear mechanical movement under the vehicle. After this. I cleared the oil wear error code and it has stayed off.

@@kabirthepunjabi Sold the X3 a few years back. Driving Subaru now and won't look back. BMWs drive nice but they no nothing about reliability/longevity. Plastic everywhere and even under the valve cover they put electronic plastic parts. Buy new if you have the money and get rid of it after three years.

Please help !! We changed the gear for my X3 2010 E83 , no lights pop up to screen , made the diognostic in BMW no error code. After changing can not accelerate more than 80 km and directly 4x4 lights (only 4x4 ) . Changed transfer case oil , not worked. Thanks in advance.

GabeCAM Hey man, how did U finally solve the problem?
Check your driveshaft Universal Joints. If there is Orange like rust color around the u-joints just change the driveshaft or the U-Joints. If you wanna be stubborn like me... lift one wheel off the ground put in neutral, chuck some wood behind the wheel so the car don’t roll on you, then you’ll be able to turn one wheel with your foot while checking the U-Joints. If there is any play/replace. Good luck it’s a pain in the ass especially with AWD.

Would a bad transfer case cause ticking while the engine is running and matching rpm as well?
Will Wel usually your lifters. Try bleeding them. Start your car and while in park rev up to 3,000rpm and hold it for 2 minutes. Should help with ticking if it’s the lifters.

Hello! I have a BMW f30 320xd, (WBA3D51010J476018), a few days ago I received an error on board (Driving Stabilisation), the car now only enters comfort mode and I have traction only on the rear wheels, after some investigations I found the following code: 48097D ( Transfer case - open clutch position, rear drive only), I mention that the failure occurred in the morning immediately after starting the engine. The car has no transfer case symptoms, does not stutter or make any strange noises. I replaced the actuator on the transfer case and it worked fine for 3 days after which the error reappeared on the board, I took the old actuator apart and found a swollen capacitor in it. Yes. Plus chek the plastik gear in the transfer case. I usualy gets broken. You can take out the old gear and turn it 180* so it use teath that Are not broken
