Remember that all contractors are not bad. we arent here to screw you over, and asphalt and asphalt paving equipment is expensive (think $250-$500,000) 9. For those of you asking, i pay about $90/ton for asphalt. To calculate your asphalt tonnage needed, the math is Length (ft) X Width (Ft) X Depth (In) X 2 / 160. Example: 12' X 40' driveway, 3" thick = 1440. 1440 X 2 = 2880 2880 / 160 = 18 tons.
(LxW in ft) x (1/9) x (inches being laidx110) / 2000 12x40 x (1/9) x (3x110) / 2000 = 9 Tons That is the correct formula to use. I’m a manager for a paving company and that is what I use to determine how many tons go on a job. You have to remember that asphalt compacts 0.5 inch per inch laid. The 1/9 is used for the conversation to sq yards The 110 is used because asphalt weighs 110 pounds per inch per sq yard
As I look at the finished driveway, I had a proud vision of this father’s children bringing current and future friends (future partners, children as well) over to the home and saying “.... and this is the driveway we all put in ourselves one really hot and fun, long summer weekend!” This is the best DIY project I’ve seen in a while👍🏼
Wow! A real man leading his family the way that he should. You did a great job! One thing is for sure, your family can depend on you. How lucky your wife is.
And how blessed he is! Wonderful kids, dad, and wife behind the camera whom I am sure was front and center helping out. Great family! This is how i was brought up( I'm 56 years old) , and how we all need to bring up our families. It fosters togetherness. God bless you all. Skip
I know right!? Where do they get more of him lol. Indeed a true masculine man doing his thing. I'm sure wife and kids appreciate him 💪🏽 Well done! 👏🏽👍🏽😊
I rarely comment, as it doesn’t really matter but I have to say that I think this dad is what all dads should be like, especially with such a lazy generation in today’s world, good job to the dad for not only taking on such a job, but also showing the kids that nothing is free in life and the greatest rewards comes from the biggest efforts, you get out what you put into life.
I'm tired of hearing this b******* dude get a grip the other day I went to visit my grandmother and she was watching The Munsters on TV from what I assumed was the early 60s or 70s and the dad on the show was complaining about the kids of that era being lazy with no direction. Seems to be every generation thinks that any generation after them is lazy and not good enough and nothing like they are when in reality its just sour old men hating on the younger group because your old and inadequate and because of your inadequacy you got to try to tear the younger group down and devalue them because you yourself internally and externally has become devalued and washed up guarantee if you were in your twenties you'd be just as f****** stupid and Reckless it's called being young and dumb for a reason and is nothing new. I bet you call the cops for music being to loud you old grape. Go sit down in you wheelchair and eat you're spinach and beef liver in peace stop harassing the young trying to live lives and have fun
@@joshuabranson74 It's always the generation that sent jobs overseas for cheap goods and blew up the housing market and racked up credit card debt talking about how lazy we all are. I've worked since I was 15, paid for college as I went, worked as a paramedic through PA school. All my neighbors are these dipshit boomers who didn't know how easy they had it. Now it's our turn to make an actual better life for our children.

Speak for your own kids! Mine are amazing independent people. And the same goes for all their cousins and friends. I teach teenagers and I am always impressed by them. They are always willing to help and not afraid of hard work. Someone with this point of view is either too bitter or has never worked with teens.
Can't explain it but you exhibit so many genuine leadership qualities, Even the kids when, they were shovelling they were working in view and direction of you.
I also have looked on youtube for DIY paving driveways and was surprised how I didn't find any. Searched about a year later and found this lol. Considering more people will try to DIY concrete which I think is less forgiving, kudos to you and your family on a job tackled successfully. Seeing kids, especially that age chipping in is the icing on the cake. Shows good upbringing which is too rare nowadays!
Just in case you haven't heard enough: You guys did a really good job! I was in the business for 40 years, and it's been a LONG time since we paved by hand; but my Dad was old school and that's how we started. You refer to "the tri-axle"; I assume he made more than 1 trip because you can't get anywhere near 35 tons on a tri-axle unless severely overloaded. In PA, the average tri-axle can legally haul an average of 23 ton per load. It's hard to tell how many square feet you have, but from the looks of it, 35 ton wouldn't be near 4" thick; my guess would be closer to 2" thick. At 2" you would get about 2800 square feet; 1400 square feet at 4". You did save a lot of money; but keep in mind that a paving company is paying for the labor, so he wasn't going to make $4000 on the job. Also keep in mind that he will have $250,000 or so in equipment on the job (not including the truck); plus outrageous worker's comp/liability insurance. Again, nice job, and for sure you know what a hard day's labor is all about!
@@jn2655 I don't think I have ever had that question before. I really doubt that your next door neighbor can smell it. You will probably be able to catch a whiff from time to time on the really hot days this summer; then that would be the end. Great job!! I love the edges and how you finished it off! We are moving to a new home in the country and I am so going to miss my asphalt driveway. Where I live asphalt doesn't increase homeowner taxes like a concrete driveway does and I think it looks just as nice and classy..
impressive! you had the support and the determination to tackle this project! far from perfect for the ones that have been doing this for years but like you mentioned, functional driveway and you saved a lot of money by doing this yourself.
This is awesome! Well done. I really like the paving stones between the road and start of asphalt and on the border. Really is very sharp! Nice to know this is a DIY project, although it appears you had an army of friends and family to help
Great job. I watched a small paving contractor do two driveways by hand. They backed the truck up and dumped the asphalt raked it and screeded it with aluminum screeds. They had forms set just like pouring concrete. After rolling it you couldn’t tell it wasn’t done with a paving machine. Anyway great job!
Omg! Great work!! You have a great family, and of course you’re obviously a great leader with the will and knowledge to get something like this done. The driveway came out so nice!! I’m glad I saw your video because it has encouraged me to do it myself. 👍👌
Wow. Very impressive. Best part is how you involved your whole family. I am trying to get my driveway paved but can’t afford it. Not sure I am as skilled as you, but maybe in the spring I will give it a try. Great video!!
Just wanted to say that is been along time that I seen kids with shovels I only see them with phones on their hands this days , and your patio came out better than paying some one to do it ,they would of used half the product for the same price . Good job.
I agree. Much better time to live. Children aren't having to do tedious things and can enjoy fantastic advancements in technology. Love seeing positive comments like this. Especially in this day and age were people still seem to think being a slave to working is a positive thing. cheers.
That is so amazing to see kids outside workimg as a family instead of inside on games big respect and props for how you raised them we just bought a new construction home and all they did was put lots of gravel down a steep hill for a driveway and im wanting to make it a real driveway like you did looks great thank you
Great Video! Thank you for sharing. 4 years ago My first quote was $27 thousand... Second quote was $18 thousand...My neighbor was getting their driveway done so I scheduled a third quote, It was $11 thousand. I asked how much if I pay in cash??? They talked and said $8000.00. I went to the bank got out cash and paid them when they were done. They put down 2" TO 4" thick and they did a fantastic job! They came back 2 times so far to real asphalt seal coat the finished driveway for $700.00 per coat. My only regret was not getting it heated for ice and snow removal. Their equipment was next door so I did not have to pay for equipment transport. They were able to book 15 other driveways while doing my driveway. They had a great year. Still holding up fantastic.
Man I love it, I do this for a living, we hire 25 people per year that can't get figure out how to shovel asphalt and quit within a week, you sir are a ass buster!
Paving is a dead end job anyways they’re onto something better. Shovel straight I know that bs and the yelling and the gypsies that fuck their cousins I’ve worked with them all and I haven’t saw anyone make over 35$ an hour lmao such s sucker trade you’ll never buy a house doing a seasonal job making that especially with inflation
Under no circumstances would I recommend this as a DIY project. That being said--you guys absolutely killed it! I could see a lot of guys getting 25% through it and tapping out and still spending the $8k for a crew to finish the job.
Thats definitely something i needed... i was conaidering doing it myself with some help from friends, but i dont wanna risk taking on a job i cant complete and end up spending money on top of the time and effort i already would have put in, i dont have a whole lot of time on my hands so ill probably just hire professionals

We are all working from home and we have the time that we never had in the past!!! Thank you again for posting this video! Again, Amazing Job and congratulations!!!!!!!!
As long as you have a lot of people helping out this is doable! What was the finished job price? Where I live, Nashville, the per ton cost of asphalt alone is $75, not including transporting it.
Dont let the video fool you. I can see low spots and spots that are most likely going to hold water. There are reasons there are professionals out there in business.
@@bencarter5555 When watching the video i see what you see. There are low spots and possibly other flaws. The truth is, he showed us you can do it yourself. He showed us the flaws and the overall success. I will learn from this before I do mine and hopefully I will improve my end results!
I wish success to you. Overall I dont think he done a bad job. But when anyone is making an investment into their home you should definitely consider the pros and cons of using a professional. If $$ is the issue I can see diy but if doing a diy project that isn't up to professional standards worth losing out on value that could be added to the property. I mean I can go to lowes and buy quickrete in a bag and make a side walk. But it isn't gonna be a job that would add value to my home. As if I would have hired a master craftsman to do it. There are pros and cons to everything. I guess its up to us as individuals to make the judgment call if its worth it or not.
I have never done ANY asphalt work, but did a LITTLE concrete work as a younger man. From what I learned from those I worked with you will be MUCH happier with the 4" rather than 2". It will last far longer than 2" would have. Nice job
and there STILL aren't any videos showing how it's done! Good for you, congratulations and yay....but I was expecting a little bit more of the method. Oh well.
Get this one....I have access to millings from a huge pile locally. There was a large area where they had threw out non-used asphalt (assumed it was from a highway contract 2 years prior). Anyway they allowed me to take that at my leisure. As anyone can expect these piles were hardened over the two years sitting there. I have had 4 truck loads going out to the site, breaking up the stuff with a steel post, loading the chunks into the truck, taking them home, and then busting these into 1 to 2 inch pieces. It's been hard work to say the least but I know have 3 inch base, been driving on it alot. It's bonding great leaving the surface not the smoothest. I'm getting some more breaking it up then finally rolling it. My son works at an equipment rental place. It's coming along better than expected and the only cost has been gas in my truck and a ton of sweat!!! (Driveway is the size of 9 vehicles parked)
Great Job Sir! Everyone is entitled to make money but some of these contractors are out of hand with quotes. Shame most of them don't even show up. Came out really nice and better then some of the "Pros".

@bradwyrick4738 I feel sorry for you, Brad. Your company must be struggling for work. For your information, I paved my own driveway a little over 10 years ago for under $3,000, and it is still holding up to this day. Homeowners can do it themselves they don't need to hire a fly-by-night contractor. Most of the paving and sealcoating contractors in my area are incompetent, and they will do anything to rip off the customers.

That is the correct formula to use. I’m a manager for a paving company and that is what I use to determine how many tons go on a job. You have to remember that asphalt compacts 0.5 inch per inch laid.
The 1/9 is used for the conversation to sq yards
The 110 is used because asphalt weighs 110 pounds per inch per sq yard
12'x40' = 480 sq ft x .25 for 3" depth = 120 ÷ 27 for cy = 4.444 cy
X 2 = 8.8888 tons.
Wow, $90/ton
We pay $65/ton here in Alabama...
Typical black women being messy on here flirting with this family man, a simple compliment of the job that’s all , this is awesome work!!
Set a great example for the kids. They learned something useful. Better than being on the xbox.
Looks great, I like the brick pavers at the end of the driveway, good touch.
@@joshuabranson74 AMEN! Now say it louder for the Boomers in the back!
...No, really, SAY IT LOUDER cuz the Boomers can’t hear that well 😅
@@joshuabranson74 whaaaaa......someone got triggered. Better find a safe space where you can regroup and plan how you are going to cancel Timothy. Yes I like beef liver and spinach but do you know whats even better? A PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH.
Speak for your own kids! Mine are amazing independent people. And the same goes for all their cousins and friends. I teach teenagers and I am always impressed by them. They are always willing to help and not afraid of hard work. Someone with this point of view is either too bitter or has never worked with teens.
Ive done many things that "can't be done" ive never tried this though. Great job and glad your happy.
I love how everyone is helping out, my family is so lazy 🥴
🤣
They are not lazy they have money
You need to instill discipline like this man has.. I have the same issue kids on ps2 all day!
Call me📞
😂😂😂😂 i hear you !
Can't explain it but you exhibit so many genuine leadership qualities,
Even the kids when, they were shovelling they were working in view and direction of you.
How is it holding up 3 years later?
I also have looked on youtube for DIY paving driveways and was surprised how I didn't find any. Searched about a year later and found this lol. Considering more people will try to DIY concrete which I think is less forgiving, kudos to you and your family on a job tackled successfully. Seeing kids, especially that age chipping in is the icing on the cake. Shows good upbringing which is too rare nowadays!
Just in case you haven't heard enough:
You guys did a really good job!
Could I ask you for how long newly applied asphalt smells? And how far does the smell travel?
@@jn2655 I don't think I have ever had that question before. I really doubt that your next door neighbor can smell it. You will probably be able to catch a whiff from time to time on the really hot days this summer; then that would be the end. If you ever put driveway sealer on it--that crap STINKS to high heavens and for a few weeks--and the guy next door will smell it too! I hope this helps.
@@browne17098 Thanks a lot for your reply, I appreciate it! Quick follow-up: Given that it is summer now, for how long after it has been applied do you think it would be possible to smell the asphalt from time to time as you wrote?
I work in a construction company where we do paving and concrete and i have never seen anyone ask on how to do something like this themselves. The pavement obviously wasn’t perfect but much respect for going out and doing it yourself because i’ve worked for almost 2years doing paving and i do 3-6 driveways a day and it is not easy. So much respect.
3-6 driveways a day? How is that even possible?
Demolition Dude they gotta be super small or idk.
No, they’re all atleast 15yds. But i work with 6 other guys too so we can finish fast and good workers that finish fast.
3-6 Driveways a day is ridiculously unrealistic.
@@AK-47ISTHEWAY you can do it if you have the right equipment and the right crew but when he says 3 to 6 driveways a day it just depends on how big they are but it’s possible.
Our kids still remember the all pitch in days better, than what material things they got. You've made memories doing this.
You've got good friends!!! I spent the first ten years of my working life paving, I know what it takes to do what you did!!!
All that help you had on site was a key part of your success, along with your audacity in tackling a job like that! I'm impressed to say the very least!!!
Great job. Loved how you got the kids and friends involved. I have been in the construction field and proud of what I have had a hand in building. You guys must be proud of such a huge task and can look back at your great work for years to come. Kudos to you and your family for some hard work. Again, it looks great!
This is AWESOME for a first time attempt at a project like this. Kudos 👏 to you and your family. Pulling into your driveway will never feel the same after an accomplishment like this!
I can tell y’all are a fun, loving, happy family bro. This is the shit I DREAM of.. keep doing your thing brother. It’s memories like this that never last🙌🏾💪🏾
Very nice job. I worked in Asphalt. Your labor force was KEY in doing this. Well thought out and done!
That driveway significantly increased your property value. 20-30 thousand, believe it or not. You'd be surprised.....Way 2 go dad. Well done.
This guy starts a paving business after this. Jesus, your a mad man
Dude...that is incredible! Good for you. What a cool project to do with your family. Well done!
You did a much better job than the company I hired to do my driveway a few years back! Holy cow. Good job brother.
Omg! Great work!! You have a great family, and of course you’re obviously a great leader with the will and knowledge to get something like this done. The driveway came out so nice!! I’m glad I saw your video because it has encouraged me to do it myself. 👍👌
An amazing job! It was great to see the whole family pitching in. Nothing beats teamwork!
Wow. Very impressive. Best part is how you involved your whole family. I am trying to get my driveway paved but can’t afford it. Not sure I am as skilled as you, but maybe in the spring I will give it a try. Great video!!
thank you

Ehh
WOW!!! That is an awesome job! It looks great. The paver edging is a great idea.
That was an ambitious project Sir!
Looks like it turned out nice!
I like that you got all your kids out there, that's awesome. Thanks for sharing this video. Much appreciated
Love how the family and even the neighbors came together for the project.
Good on YOU, AND your kids! I Love seeing that group effort. Well done Beautiful Family!!!
Wow Jon I have been thinking about my driveway similar length for couple years and been bothering me so much. I’m so impressed thank you so much seriously brother thank you so much for making this, just to see somebody do it diy is so inspiring thank you
Lovely looking neighbourhood and love the family involvement. Seems great place to live
This was a great video, Jon! Thanks to you and your family & friends for this video, I hope my own project will be as smooth!
Man good for y'all! You taught those children a great lesson about the value of being self sufficient and working hard to get it done. The paving was just a by product.
Would like to see an update in 5 to 10 years.
What a legend this guy is. Just paving his own driveway and creating children. Well done dude
Well done!
Any texture issues, scratch and burn it and you’re good.

Lived in Texas( if you know you know) Me and my big sis loathed the weekends early mornings not knowing what kind of yard work was in store for us, but looking back it really was a great way to just teach us hard work. 👍🏽 up for getting the kids involved
This was the best video on diy asphalt driveway!!!
Amazing job!!! Congratulations. I just received a hilarious quote for my driveway and it is about less than a quarter of yours in size. Your video has inspired us to do it ourselves. We are all working from home and we have the time that we never had in the past!!! Thank you again for posting this video! Again, Amazing Job and congratulations!!!!!!!!
Let us know how yours comes out
As long as you have a lot of people helping out this is doable! What was the finished job price? Where I live, Nashville, the per ton cost of asphalt alone is $75, not including transporting it.
Man this was Awesome. The whole family helped. Professional look!! Outstanding job.
It would be nice to include your cost compared to a hired company since DIY is usually done to eliminate costs/get a better focused job.
Beginning he said the company quoted 8000$ or so, and everything to do it themselves totalled less than half (4000$ or less)
Did a great job for a first time. Never seen anyone do that much handwork before.
Great job, look amazing!
Great job! You and your family should be very proud of yourselves
Great job! Also thank you for the video, very encouraging to do my own.
Oh well.
Fu**ing awesome job man, out of all the DIY videos Iv seen this year this has impressed me the absolute most!
Not exactly Do it yourself mate you have an army
You know this guy is a solid dude. He had the whole neighborhood over. Great job.
Seal it, it will fill in imperfections and add protection from elements
How do you do that?
@@tonynewnham3114 youtube seal coating
You will not know the quality of your work for a few more years. If it holds together for the next 10 years you did a great job.
How much did the ashfault cost with delivery?
(Driveway is the size of 9 vehicles parked)
is there a reason you didn't go with concrete at 4" depth? awesome job though, enjoyed the video.
Because asphalt is more simple. no rebar placement. sets faster. and cheaper
@@cynicaltexan9639 it’s (asphalt) also less expensive in an area that size.
@@PatrickFarrell_KJV thats what I said: )
@@cynicaltexan9639 I missed that “and cheaper” part. Sorry bro. You nailed it.
@@PatrickFarrell_KJV you good. :)
Great Job Sir! Everyone is entitled to make money but some of these contractors are out of hand with quotes. Shame most of them don't even show up. Came out really nice and better then some of the "Pros".
In my neighborhood that bike, wheelbarrow, and chair would disappear over night. Just saying
Dude freakin awesome, looks great! I did my driveway in stamped concrete, but have another property that needs a new driveway an I’ve been thinking of paving myself!
Thanks for showing us it can be done!
Nice job! These pavers are pricing themselves out of work! DIY
No we aren’t. We have a massive overhead and lots of mouths to feed it is called commerce. You all have priced yourselves into homes and lives you can’t afford or you’d have enough to pay a contractor instead of wasting your time complaining about the cost around you that you have contributed to. Shut up Karen.
Brad Wyrick i must have struck a nerve Karen! Just go back to work!
Demolition Dude Hire a fly by night contractor so you have something to complain about. It’s not that bad your house probably sucks worse than your old lady.
@@bradwyrick4738 Lame comeback lol. My house is awesome and I'm not married. I'm guessing you must be married to a gold digger if all you complain about is money? Is she sucking your bank accounts dry?
I’ve done asphalt work before. It is a tough job. And you did a great job.
This is not an average do it yourself job. This guy has an army of kids and large equipment. The only thing that looks like "do it yourself about this job" is the final result.
Amazing job and beautiful just beautiful driveway.
Why didnt you at least show the truck, tractor and spreading the asphalt being laid out. All you showed was a little bit of nothing other than explaining how to level an area for asphalt.
Wow that is very good job love this 👍❤️
I'm impressed. Rolling is a skill, too. You did a nice job not leaving lines from the roller or ruining the edge.
Excellent Teamwork 💯💜💯 Looks Professional 💯💜💯
That turned out awesome. Great job with the pavers for edging.
This is fantastic!!!! I've been wondering why I couldn't get some asphalt, heat it if needed with a big torch and compact with a roller and or plate compactor.....and after watching this, I'm absolutely sold! Really cool and thanks for taking the effort to make this video!
That is a big job for a diy! I think the price quoted by a paving contractor was pretty decent. My driveway is not as large or curvy as yours and I’m pretty sure my quotes would come close to what you were quoted. I don’t think i would tackle this project so 👍 to you and your kids‼️. And I don’t have a tractor nor would I want to buy a roller. Cheers🍻

I did a driveway myself but it is only 40 feet long. Spread it with the Bobcat and hand raked, than used the vibrating compactor. Over 20 years later it is still in great shape! Your job may outlast those done by professionals!
