Stuff I used in the video:
Gas Plate Compactor (5% with code sixtyfiveford): shorturl.at/btDR0
Electric Plate Compactor: amzn.to/3Kf1qUk
Evolution Concrete Demo Saw: amzn.to/3HZllG7 or shorturl.at/oKLO6
I called Evolution and they said:
5% off everything at EVOLUTION TOOLS with code "SIXTYFIVEFORD"
After Thoughts about the Video: 4914 pavers/19,000lbs approx 1100sqft. This took me 4 weeks working with the majority of the work being prep dirt work with the small tractor. I ended up using 200 bags of sand(45-50lbs each/9000lbs) to do everything and getting them for free saved a fair amount.

Nowadays, DIY is the only way of saving money, no need to be cheap on the materials. Thanks for sharing.
This would not come out nearly as good without Ginger’s assistance.
Good free labor is hard to find.
Sprinkle some borax or boric acid onto the sand before you put your pavers down. It knocks the ants back and keeps them from turning it into a huge colony and undermining the pavers
Does that offer long term protection? I'd expect it to wash away over the years...
That's great advice.
My father always mixed the sand with cement powder which would eventually harden up enough that the ants wouldn't be able to carry it away. Don't know what the ratio was, but something like 10:1.
Indeed it is called stabilised sand (stabilisé in French). Here it is always used. Sand is not done for longevity issues@@John-ou4rm
Ginger sure is a smart helpful dog. Love her stunts too. Driveway looks great.
Ginger was great entertainment throughout the entire process.
I love how you dealt with the water access cover. Probably not "approved", but if I worked for the water department, I'd have no problem with it. It's well marked and access is dead simple!
Hey Thanks. My Brother in Law works for the water department and said it was good.
What a smashing driveway 😀
It looks like it has always been there.
And the truck has marked it's domain, like dogs often do lol.
Problem is how much some of the trucks want to mark their domain.
*For Pete's sake, Ginger! Keep your eyes on the road!*
There's just no limit to what you can do..and ginger is a big help as well..that drive way looks flawless ..i also have experience with concrete but at 68 years old i don't think i could do it by myself..at least i know how it's done ..thanks friend and ginger too..cheers 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hey Thanks. I grew up learning concrete the hard way with mixing small batches in an old Sears mixer. That was the easy part as my father also made me and my brothers load the sand and gravel at the gravel pit as well. Countless shovel loads to fill the bed of a pickup.
The detail brick around the gas line💪🏽💪🏽👍👍👍
That looked fantastic when you were done. You always make everything look easy. It was also cool to hear how you could save money by buying the bricks when they were on sale in getting your sand for free. Driveways are so expensive to install. My sister lived in a home for years and the city came out and said she could no longer have a gravel driveway because she was violating the code. She told them her driveway had always been gravel and they told her she was wrong. There are going to find her a lot of money each day. She couldn't afford a new driveway. She found some old photographs that could be dated that showed her house with a gravel driveway years ago and they approved her driveway.
No such thing as owning your own property anymore.
City and county/regional ordinances vary. State building codes too. Federal law and the NFPA (?) are consistent. HOAs and their compliance commissioners can be really ugly Communists. You can: (1)Agree to and appease their demands; (2)Creatively "re-interpret" the wording of the covenant; (3)Purchase a couple dozen Krispy Cream donuts; (4) Apply for a variance. Depending upon yir sister's age and/or economic ability, there maybe funds available for mediation. One thing to keep in mind, if the property is sold: all codes and conditions must be brought up to date. Sometimes the buyer includes special conditions (such as a new water main and sewer encorporated, termite treatment, etc.) prior to "closing", within a delineated period, and/or have funds in escrow for exigencies. I've seen a few, but I ain't no realtor (I bet they have stories). Yeah, maybe some local real estate agent would have some information and have some tricks up his/her sleeve.
@@sixtyfiveford Why not just change your laws? The government does not tell us what kind of driveway we can have in Britain. In America, land of the free, you even get forced to cut your lawns to a certain length. I would go mental if the council turned up and told me to get a new driveway unless they were paying for it. I would rather go to prison I am serious. M
@@ericconnor8419 HOA( homeowner associations) are the root of most of the personal land use problems. People want to live in a nice house and have neighbors that take care of their yards as well. So they're convinced that signing an HOA agreement with all the fellow landowners is the answer. They generally work out really well for the first 3 to 5 years with a brand new home. But then new people move in and/or want to make changes to the yards, landscaping, house exterior and all those generally violate HOA agreements. So people quickly find out that their neighbors have more control over their property than they do themselves.
I do not live in an HOA nor would I ever choose to. I personally would not buy any property in an HOA. I could do whatever I wanted essentially with my yard with some limitations. Those would be on a city legal level. These generally mean I can't have one meter tall weeds in my front yard, can't turn my entire front yard into metal recycling yard , etc. But that doesn't control me as far as I can paint my house. Any color I want, unlike an HOA.
As far as your statement about changing the laws in the US. We have a major issue that we do not take any laws away. Instead we just add more. So the land of the free only gets more restrictive as time goes on.
@@sixtyfiveford when I bought a place I explicitly wanted a no HOA place. Some HOAs I saw even outlawed having your garage door open unless your car was entering or existing it. That's nuts to me.
The major downside where I was looking is that every development built in the '80s or later had an HOA. So I live in 50 year old tract housing. But I don't have some board telling me what I can and cannot do with it. Just 1 annoying neighbor that likes to leave notes about things they find offensive.
Now that takes pounding sand to a new level! Well done!
Came out real nice. I remember doing the cement on a second driveway at my Dad's home on the coast of NC. It would get so hot that no one could work in the afternoon. We would work 6am to noon. Then spend the afternoons at the beach!
I enjoy your videos. I reside in Upstate New York where we have extreme freeze and thaw cycles at the beginning and end of winter. When we have pavers, cement or blacktop that surrounds gas entrance pipes, we use foam and schedule 40 PVC to sleeve the gas service pipe. The frost cycles can cause the hard pavement (in your case pavers) to rub and - over the years - eventually wear away and cause a break in the gas service pipe. Excellent job! P.S. I also admire Ginger.
Looks great! Love the free sand idea. That dog always cracks me up, I'd hate to think what she could do if she had thumbs!
Thanks. Ginger was great entertainment during the entire process.
Glad to see some DIY projects.. brings back memories of the used motor oil wood stain and pallet shed build..Cheers..
Right on. That shed as a fun project.
The most noticeable aspect of this project is the grade. And you nailed it! ...looks like a sheet of glass. Yards, gardens, pool decks, etc. Require a proper slope(for drainage), foundation(soil composition: depending upon intended purpose/use). Random undulations don't work in this specific situation. Driveways and pathways frame yir landscape and its "style". I have a neighbor who hauls rock, sand, dirt asphalt...(Fred Flintstone). He taught me a lot about dirt, soil, loam. I ain't no landscape architect. His yards are immaculate! Beautiful flowersl shrubs, trees and rocks. Some rocks are pretty cool. He comes across them occasionally and will bring them home . He totally redesigned his grounds. I don't have that talent. Hey, what am I talking about...? Great drivewayl
Good job I remember when I had your determination and grit and I am inspired
Hey Thanks.
Stunning, that looks incredible.
You are absolutely correct about the pavers. A boatload more work and money. You did a great job on those pavers, I've seen "professionals" skip the last and crucial step, the sand. You put a lot of work into that project, nicely done.
Thanks 👍
Dude... You rock! That is a well thought out, planned, and executed job! It looks amazing! It will also increase your property value as well as the curb appeal!
Thanks a bunch!
Fantastic looking paver driveway. Having done one myself (with larger pavers) I understand the immense amount of time and prep it requires to do.
I see you are making the choice of sand for packing material. HOWEVER if you want to make certain it all stays interlocked & weeds don’t start growing use SAND MIX (Sand & Portland Cement Mix) they sell for $5 a bag 50-60lb so mixing it yourself won’t save much.
I also recommend you finish it with a concrete sealer to protect the beautiful finish you achieved. The retaining wall in itself takes a lot to setup as well so Really I can’t say enough about how great that turned out.
I laughed so hard at the “not bad, good job” comment while Ginger was driving the tractor
Amazing work! Driveways look awesome!
That was an enormous amount of work, but that driveway came out beautiful. Ginger is an excellent helper when you are trimming trees. 😊👍
She's was great entertainment and was by my side for the 200 hrs this took.
Very labor intensive and looks great.
Very nicely done, Moe. I am going to do a small 3 foot square landing at the bottom of my steps to the back yard. I got my bricks for $1 at an auction. Still trying to source some sand. Thanks for the pointers.
Gotta love the $1 auction finds.
You're a very brave man. Well done!
Looks great and the price was right!
Yes it was!
I did a patio 20yrs ago and i can promise you that was my first and last time you have a bit more intestinal fortitude than I do great job!!
Yeah, no fun!
Thank you for sharing. That is some great DIY work you did there & you are also a master at saving $$$. Great tips 👍🏻
Your snoopervisor did a great job! The driveways look really good.
A lot of work and it turned out excellent!
Wow, great job! Thanks for sharing this video and information!
Fantastic job…nicely done.
Very nice! Looks much better than concrete. I did a similiar walkway in front of my house, but it was curved so I had to cut every brick along the edges of both sides. I also did my wife's house patio, but this time no curves! We have a brick manufacturer HC Muddox in Sacramento, and once a year they have sale to get rid of excess inventory or 'old models', and they are 'almost free' like 5-10 cents. They sell them by the pallets.
I also ran a concrete driveway to the back of one of my houses, and it ran next to the gas meter like you have. I put pipe around it concreted into the ground so a car can't accidently run into it and rupture the gas line. It might even be a code / law requirement, but in any case, very important safety item.
At my bro's house, in Southern California, I helped him run a gas line for a BBQ. The only code requirements were for: 1 how deep buried. But, since it was in a pool deck, there were additional limitations to proximity to the pool. It was encased in the cement deck, so it required a green plastic sleeve over the iron pipe. Also, it wasn't underneath a driveway, which probably would have required it to be buried much deeper. So no heavy load would ever be on it. It was fully code compliant and passed inspection.
Nice job 👍 A lot of work.
Wow. Great attention to detail. Haven't seen an install this nice before.
Thanks!
Good going and that's a very good boi. I really liked your around-the-pipe cutting of that brick.
oh this was really good to watch probably gonna do this for my backyard.
Hilarious seeing doggo in the driver seat 🤣
Fabulous job!!👌👍 This old DIY guy misses the days of projects like that.
Glad you enjoyed it
looks real pretty. good job sff and ginger.
Hey Thanks.
You sir are a jack of all trades. Looks good!
Great video. Thanks i can now do my small paver project.
Just amazing work you do.
Thank you very much!
That came out very nice.
Hey Thanks.
Great work man looks fantastic.
Man that is way more work then I ever want to do, good job
Recently laid marble tiles in the back yard. One thing that help compact soil is water. nice job
It really looks fantastic
Cool . I enjoyed it .Looks real good. I used to do a lot of dry lay pavers and stone .We got to choose what jobs we went on so i tried to do more stone . We put sealer on when done , it seemed to help with the oil drops. We did a lot of concrete driveways too. As soon as we could walk on them we sealed with Diamond clear . I just got my plate compactor back today .Loaned it to family a very long time ago and just got it back .
I debated sealing but I read a lot of negative things on the current water-based sealers they want to sell everywhere.
@@sixtyfiveford I agree , a lot of them are not so good .
5:28 now those are the details I am here for!
Thanks.
Great video, looking to do a project like this on my backyard.
Turned out really nice!
The pavers look great!!
Hey Thanks.
Incredible job! I have a heeler, so I'm very familiar with their antics.
Awesome! Thank you!
That was some hard work. It looks great. And you saved a ton of money.
Thanks 👍
That pipe cutout was smooth man!
That looks fantastic!
love this! anything to kill ridiculous cost
Looks amazing! I’ve been considering this on the side of my garage. I extended my rear concrete deck like this years ago and it’s definitely a lot of work. Nice thing in my area is you don’t have to have a permit to do pavers because they consider it landscaping.
It's a ton of work but looks really good. I feel bad that you'd have to get a permit to do simple concrete work.
@@sixtyfiveford right?! Even the ladies that issue the permits say it’s ridiculous.
I did this job. Made a patio the full length of the house, and paved all the area between the house, garage, and driveway. It was a massive project, and you're right, DIY will save a ton! It is one heck of a lot of work though!
1/4 of the way through I just kept thinking I should have just poured cement and I'd be done.
Gosh dang ginger is a smart dog!!!
Awesome job sir. On my way to do the same thing.
Nice job.. You may want to use rigid steel pipes instead of PVC as PVC flexes and dips. That dog is awesome..
I had to follow a contour and the base under the sand needs to be at the proper grade/level anyway. So all the pipe is doing is spacing a proper sand thickness.
You did good work once again sir.👍
Thanks
Beautiful job
Nice project, looks great!
Thanks!
Thats awesome, nice work!
Wow looks great and great price definitely worth the work
Hey thanks
Well done!
Hey Thanks.
Fantastic work
Good stuff Moe!! Nice vid. Project looks great !!
Thanks 👍
VERY NICE JOB !!!!!!! THOSE ARE VERY NICE TIPS !!!!! I NEED TO REDO MY DRIVEWAY ~~~~~~~
Hey Thanks.
Absolutely beautiful! I can relate to the labor side with a walkway I did years ago. Oof, that's real work. Be proud of your craftsmanship and frugalness.
I do this for a living an yes I'm impressed, top quality job👍
i approve, especially when you're on your own!
So much work. I know different climates have different techniques.
That makes a nice driveway.
Beautiful job !!!
Thank you!
@@sixtyfiveford
Really like your helper Too !!!
Very nice work.
I love the PVC Pipe Idea!
Very nice job. You can also seal the pavers which I have done in the past at shopping malls and it works pretty well.
I debated sealing and still on the fence. I hate water based paints etc and that's all I'm seaming to find. My fear is it'll flake and look worse in 3 years than if I just left it alone.
You would probably be better off using a concrete sealer, try your local concrete supplier
Great job! Alot of work but it looks great.
Very well done! 👍
Thank you very much!
that driveway wouldn't likely last a winter around here. would likely be wavy and unlevel after winter. we usually go for having at least 6" of gravel before putting a thin layer of limestone under the stone. also i feel like you should have had a taller retaining wall so your not dumping all the water from your property onto your neighbors. maybe it is not as wet near you as it is here but it can definitely be a pretty big issue here. i know there are certain area's of town here that flood regularly when we get heavy rain and as of right now the town doesn't seem to be making changes to prevent it.
Also, these 40mm pavers are not meant for driving vehicles on. Minimum driveway paver should be 60mm. That being said, I have bought thousands of this exact paver over the least three years when they’ve gone on sale for $0.25 and used them for walkways and patios.
@@SIE44TAR i would agree that they definitely don't look very thick but as long as the base stays pretty flat and solid probably shouldn't have an issue with bricks cracking. the base is super important no mater what is done. it was 1 think i disliked about doing patio's. spending a week or more building a good base and about 1 day laying brick.
That is beautiful!!!
Hey Thanks.
Excellent job
Looks beautiful Moe.
Thank you!
Impressive!!! Good work.
Thank you!
That does look really nice 👍
Hey thanks
Nice job on the project and that was a good tip on getting those pavers at a really low price. Good to know!
Thanks 👍
Nice, looking Job Moe!
Thanks!
Looks really nice,
Looks awesome!
Came out great
Amazing job. I did a small back yard patio out of 2x3 foot pavers. Man were they heavy. Got it done and it lasted for years and I think it's still there after we left 15 yrs ago.
I did a small patio with old reclaimed 4×4×8 paving bricks. And oh boy was it a lot of work and it was maybe 1/10th the size of what you've done here.
I always joke that the bricks were free and that still wasn't cheap enough.
VERY GOOD and Ginger is a really fine boss! BLESSINGS!
Hey Thanks.
@@sixtyfiveford U 2, Pal!
Nice job.
Pavers looks better than concrete I think, you done well. Good idea to drill some shallow holes in the edge pavers to make them stay there. I worked for a landscaper once and he charges extra for every cut. Ginger is a good helper by the looks
I agree the look of the pavers vs concrete is much nicer.
Thanks I figured the shallow holes would give a little extra bite.
Technically the pavers are the more economical way to perform in the long run as well potentially spanning generations of utility, mainly if I understand correctly due to the re-usable nature of the material where only human power is required to process and re-use compared to more heat energy required for say asphalt or cement based. Great work, looks fantastic!
There are solid plastic pavers made from recycled garbage & other composites, they can catch fire though
Looks fantastic!!
Hey thanks.
