I feel like this was originally meant to be in sonic forces But it was probably scrapped because it was probably too long and it might been a bit Too serious and a bit dark but hey at least tangle is canon thanks to frontiers
I love how when sonic is talking to eggman about why he went back to his old ways, when eggman was talking it seems like he was genuinly reconsidering going back to that life, as if he truly did miss it.

Late reply but it's because the writers were different. Ian Flynn was the main writer for IDW's Sonic comic and was later moved to the main Series, where he wrote the plot for Sonic Frontiers. The writers for Sonic Forces were different and Ian Flynn wasn't involved with the game's development.

Going to be honest here, the Metal Virus probably has to be one of the most disturbing things that SEGA themselves has done. I mean, just look at it. Flickies are being turned into zombots and peoples' sanity is chipping away, and worst of all the main protagonist, Sonic himself, nearly died to it too.
