It's not often that I have an opportunity to build something for my brother. He's been in London for the past ten years and recently moved back to the States. His house is pretty empty so I've taken on the challenge of building as much furniture as possible for his new house. I'll get the process started with a Walnut Dining Table. When I asked him what he liked, he sent me numerous pictures of tables that were firmly in the current interpretation of the Mid-Century Modern style. To be frank, I'm having a bit of MCM fatigue so I came up with a design that should make us both happy. And because he's my brother, I just to include a special surprise.

Intro to SketchUp Course - thewoodwhispererguild.com/product/intro-to-sketchup/
I was expecting the obfuscated blocks to get smaller as you sanded them down to 220 grit😂
When the jigsaw breakdown music came on, had flashbacks to the 80’s expecting Marc in different color leg warmers. Think “Flashdance”😂. Maybe it’s late and I am too tired.
When "Matt" showed up I initially thought you were April fooling us with a well crafted split screen of yourself, complete with live action interactive dialog. LOL.
Yeah he could easily be my stunt double. :)
I highly recommend that sketchUp course. sketchUp will help you draw those special details for your shaper origin to cut!
I wanted to see the reaction to the special artwork 😂. Beautiful table!!
That little jigsaw time intro montage is probably the best bit of content on the channel, now :D
Hate to break it to you Marc but your shop cat is working exactly as designed 😂😂😂
Maybe he should get a Shop Fox, too, LOL.
Not only is your cat working as designed, he is also teaching you (while you are teaching us). Remember, dogs prepare you for children, but cats prepare you for teenagers.
I've got that exact same model of cat, mines the 2017 model year. I also didn't get an owners manual or warranty card with mine.
Wait till you get to finishing. Then you will really appreciate your furry assistant. 😂🤣
Can confirm that shop cat is entirely to spec
Based on the design specification documentation I have for the Shop Cat version 2.3a, the Shop Cat is working within acceptable tolerances. Per specification no adjustments are needed at this time. BTW, the table turned out great and thank you for sharing the adventure.
yes, those Shop Cat operations are features, not design flaws.😺
From a cat's point-of-view, the focus of your attention is often the most comfortable spot in the room.
Nice table. A vas deferens from your usual work.
😂🫡
And, if my cat was any indication, the object of my attention (a book, especially) became the object of her destruction because, of course, if it were vanquished she would once again become The Centre of the Universe.
another level comment!
you're gonna need to bring that humor down several levels for this crowd!! :)
Well, you’ve passed the test & are now my brother too! I welcome some of your beautiful furniture! Great job & thanks for the video.
Outstanding table. Very well produced video. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
I had a shop cat, and it’s nothing wrong with yours.. he has chosen you - and he will be your friend for life.
Don’t worry, the biting and playing won’t go on too long, but he will be at your epicentre of whatever you do and if he decides that he’ll spend the time with you, you will find him inside the Systainer that you’re making the insert for.. 😆
I'm glad you guys got Ian home. Nice table design!
That shop cat is working exactly as designed!
I don’t see anyone else pre-glue the dominos to create little tenons. It’s such a subtle thing to do to make glue up easier. I love the details you see before hand!
Hes a very normal healthy shopcat......enjoy!
Table turned out beautifully. Great job
That looks awesome.
Great job on the table and 80’s music
The UA-cam Maker Community can never have enough inlayed weeners!
The Contemporary Johnson style of furniture is a big improvement over MCM
Brilliant
That is one good looking dining room table.
Beautiful table!!!
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
Good job on the "Big Unit" table.
Priceless 😅😅😅😅
' make sure to keep the clamps tight' not that that ever happened to me like 20 times😂
I love the style of this table, particularly the legs. Oh and I like your style of “that special touch” for only the people you love 😂
Great video. As always a good mix of humor and knowledge.
Shop cats are awesome.
Looks great!!
That's one helluva makers mark! HAHA
That router bit!!😮
Thank you Marc. MCM has saturated the youtube market in the last year. The table is lovely
Year? MCM has been the staple of UA-cam channels since UA-cams existence.
This was a great video done by you agan!!
Great job Marc. Fitting for a brother lol
Un placer ver tus videos.
Aren’t u worried about the underside getting getting harder before the top. lol good work as always great content.
Very nice table!
Such a nice brother you are. That edge profile looks so nice (the whole thing too).
You know when young children are crawling around underneath the table they will see that little extra flourish....
If the kid knows what it is, it's too late anyway.
Yup. Not sure what damage a cartoon penis might do to a poor innocent baby child but my instincts say it won't move the needle.
@@woodwhispereryou can always say it’s Peppa Pig. 😂
Cable guy comin in clutch!
Digging deep!
Welcome to the Shaper Origin family!!!
I've had one for years. I just don't use it much, lol.
@@woodwhisperer inlay "inappropriate" images for family is one of the machines endearing qualities 🤣
It's a rocket ship!
I hope that is what I think that is ;) lol thanks Marc, you're always great.
It is!
Oh April fools! Lol of course. Well done
You need to get some shop cat tips from the master, Keith Johnson lol
Absolutely! Jerry and Lola are the chillest cats ever!
nice job looks great
Well done outstanding
Yeah, shop cats are the end all, be all of foreman. That's SOP for one. And appeared to be doing a good job of it too!
19:30 “I’ve got some white stuff” 😆
Nice
I am so glad to know your relationship with your brother reflects my own with mine! Well done sir and nice "wood" on the underside of the table. Excellent color choice, maybe could have been a little bit more off-white! The Money shots at the end were priceless.
I think it depends on what you eat. Maybe?
@@woodwhisperer I’m glad it isn’t scratch and sniff…
MCM even bores the Shakers ..lol
Awesome table, Marc! Though I kinda wish I had a shop cat of my own now. LOL We do have a feral cat colony on our property, some of whom have come into the garage where I do my woodworking, but most of them are not socialized, and I always shoo them out lest they get locked in. So I don't think they count for that. But at least I don't have to worry about any of our cats getting hurt or going missing (they are indoor-only cats & the garage/woodshop is detached), so there is that. Anyway, thank you for the giggles & fine furniture demo. I always love your dry sense of humor. The cateos (cat cameos) are always appreciated, too, of course! Hope you have a wonderful day! :)
Spagnolo's are not only classy, but humorous too.😀
I'll be using some backside before the quick and thick on my next glue up.....😶
I love how all of us that have dogs first, we pet and treat cats as insane feral loving flexible dogs
"Is that hair gel?"😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Good call, shop cat should get you another 100K subs.
I feel validated. The mix of traditional holdfasts to secure things for the Domino, etc. I feel less bad using my holdfasts to secure my diversions dovetailing jig.
That inlay reminds me of the words of the famous modern day philosopher, Howard Stern when he said “*blank*-a-doodle-doo”. 😂
What is that big featherboard/roller you used on the bandsaw? That device is something I haven’t seen before.
As I learned in one of your shop tour videos the correct term for that router bit would be a “butt pucker bit”
Just like they used to do it back in study hall.
Great editing work with the split screens. What’s that you say? That’s Mat? Not Marc? You serious Clark?
...and here I was thinking backside sandpaper was the toilet paper available at any office building, school, restaurant, or cheap relative's house
Don’t forget the military.😂😂
Great build and and btw your brother earned that new logo! He must really like eggplant 🤣
He's a fan.
@@woodwhisperer glad to see you having fun and entertaining 👍🏻
4 da SHOP CAT.... Just HUG IT LOTS n soon as it sees you coming it will treat you like staff as opposed to family.
The Meow Mix commercial 🤣
Freaking awesome. Only complaint is we had to watch for a full 6 minutes before we got to see a goof up. Don’t go and get all professional on us now. Lol
I have a similar problem with one of our cats (3 total) she loves attention and likes to sit in the middle of my projects I’m working on (as long as I’m not using a power tool) she doesn’t like the noise
Nope, ain't broke. Works fine.
It looks awesome. Is the project available?
Have you ever tried the Rockler Domino glue brushes? They are great to spread the glue inside the mortise covering all the sides.
Holy crap, that router bit sounded like a chainsaw
Your woodworking - top notch (as always). Your comedy - improving! Every time I watch you, I learn something new. (in this case, stupid clamping tricks!)
BTW... who makes your new band saw?
Amazing work, Marc! Beautiful table!!! 😃
About the cat, consider getting a Maine Coon as well! They're big cats, but extremely gentle and behave a lot like a dog...
I have a cat that I believe his father was a Maine Coon (his mother was comum). He likes to go to the roof with my other cats, but differently from them, he comes down meowing when I call him! By his name! (Which, BTW, is Luke Skywalker.)
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Shop cat is as shop cat does
"We have been trying to reach you about your shop cat's extended warranty..."
That shop cat is working properly. Evidently it's a "FEATURE not a FLAW"
Just caught the block of wood you have in your miter saw to form a narrow area to avoid split out in the back edge. Havent seen that before. Did you ever do a video on that?
Marc...Beautiful table and love the touches to the MCM motif. I noticed your bandsaw fence looked a bit different than I recall your Driftmaster Bandsaw Fence appearing. If I recall you had the same struggles getting that aligned on the saw that many of us have. I have a definite love/hate (mostly hate) relationship with mine, and would be very interested to know if you've found something (anything) better! Many Thanks!
As always great video. By the way... what is that on your Kapex in the center that the saw blade is cutting into at 4:30 mark in the video?
That's the Colliflower fence system. Find out more here: www.colliflower-zci.com/store/colliflower-zero-clearance-fence-for-kapex Just FYI I have no affiliation with them but they sent that to me as a freebie and I liked it enough to keep it on the saw.
Beautiful table. Very nice design and build. Regarding the small Domino, I live four hours away, and for you Mark, if I'd known the small one wouldn't work for those cuts, I would have driven that far and loaned you my large Domino for those mortises. Nah. April Fools. ;-).
Keith Johnson might have some good tips for shop cat tuning and maintenance
It will probably be a child that will find the wrath under the table.
Hair gel! 🤣😆🤣
Uh-Oh, if their furnace goes out in the Midwest winter, will the table experience significant shrinkage?
After quite a few mishaps with the Domino fence, I kind of stopped using it. I made my own offset bottom base for it and I find there is much less chance for error and I never run into the issue that the fence doesn't have enough travel.
lol!!!!!!
Great video. One thing puzzles me. Near the end there is a quick shot of the big-boy Festool router that seems to show the plug for the power to be dangling in the air. What is powering the festool?
Nice curves, Marc! Even better inlay! Lol. What was his reaction when he saw it?
He was confused. 😂
What’s funny is when I moved to my new home that came with a 2k sf shop the owners left their cat. I was pissed to say the least. One day later I had a shop cat, lol. Guess it’s just part of being a wood worker
Regarding the shop cat, call Keith Johnson and see if he can help. 😉
You have to send your cats to KJs Sawdust camp for cats
Nice video. What is that long yellow ruler you are using on timecode 1:15 (yellow with a black band)?
www.leevalley.com/en-us/shop/tools/hand-tools/marking-and-measuring/marking-accessories/44631-lee-valley-drawing-bows
Thank you
Is Danish Furniture considered to be mid century Mod? That's a very nice table
Should have gone with the ClawStop shop cat...
I think Keith Johnson could fix your cat or know who could.
