Miley’s version is truly beautiful .. and it’s from the perspective of someone very young. A teen experiencing her first heartbreak after falling in love, maybe even for the first time. Her version is actually more hopeful through the pain though because they are still so young and they know they have their whole lives still ahead of them to experience many more great loves in their lives. So, although the goodbye was painful, it’s not the end. Hope for a future filled with love is still very much alive. And knowing that, she’s wishing him all the best, knowing full well they’ll each eventually find someone new to love. Now, Cher’s version, on the other hand, comes from somewhere so deep, so painful, from a much more mature point of view, after living decades and decades of life and love and loss. She knows this feeling. She’s experienced deep committed love, perhaps 20+ years of marriage to the man she’s built a life and family with ..... and then experiences this deep profound loss that “hope” can’t even touch. That’s what I think Cher is singing about. And its why you hear something quite different in her voice compared to Miley’s. I love both Miley's and Cher's versions. They both have strong vocals in different ways. Miley's version is having hope for something better and holding no grudges against the former lover. Cher does the same, the only difference being is that the sadness dominates the song and trys the digest it slowly.
