Oh heck yes! I didn’t know they updated it to work with photos as well! Can you do another video comparing the photo vs lidar scanning and what might be better for certain uses?
cool tutorial, thanks a lot! if I may, I'd like to make a couple of suggestions: 1. first of all the camera should be mounted in landscape mode, so that the object of interest covers as much area in the photo as possible (that is why some spikes are united on the dog) 2. the lighting should be more uniform and more diffuse, the surface in this case is very glossy, and so with each move the same dog surface looks different; more diffuse light (like in a cloudy day) will reduce to the maximum the glossiness
Rather than the technique in this video, I had more success using the "auto" mode which takes photos automatically as you move the phone around the subject by hand. There may be an advantage of moving the phone versus moving the subject. Reflections and shadows don't move relative to the surface of the subject. The auto feature may not have been available when this video was made.
Great tutorial! How do you feel about using the auto vs manual shutter options? Also, I’d love an iPhone tripod recommendation-what are you using in this tutorial?
Hi Andrew, I red somewhere that the algorithm uses the background/ background objects to determine size and details of the scanned object. This would mean a white or plain background would create a different result. Some even recommended turning the camera around the subject to change the background and capture it from different angles instead of turning the subject on a turntable. What is your oppinion on this?do you think a noisy background would have improved the spikes in this example?
@@totallylegityoutubeperson4170 Thats a good idea, something as simple as a coin or maybe even a ruler on the edge will help the algorithm work out the scale
@@AndrewSink i also hope you can compare Mesh / OBJ outputs using the Pro Polycam to the free options, Im really into the photo mode needing at least 20 shots to get good detail then upped for processing in Polycam cloud... if you show us all, it may save us ALL many hours of time experimenting 👌🏼
would you be able to scan with a macro lens? would this increase the level of details of the object? why does the object need to be fully in frame, wouldnt detail shots add information to the scan?
it will be hard to get good pictures of my car to make into a model but i’m going to try it! DAMN YOU HOTWHEELS i wish they made a 1990 eclipse GSX lol thank you for this video nice quick and concise!
Works great ^^, however the free version cannot export anything other than a video which is not that great when I want to inspect the mesh quality and test it with my workflow.
@@AndrewSink After looking into the options a few hours ago you can actually export gltf format which can be imported into blender. Will try that out. It is very affordable compared to other similar tools, however as I don't earn in usd-euro the conversion rate makes it a lot more for me.
@@AndrewSinkI reprocessed it but it still looks the same :( The problem was that the base where the object was standing on also was on the result. I rewatched your video than and found out that I forgot to enable masking so I did that but it still looks the same :( Do you know how I can fix this? Oh and btw I didn't know that reprocessing cost a free scan so now I only have 8 left 🥲
is there an option to get more captures per month on the paid stuff tho? I intend to work on tons of projects and it would be a bit difficult with only 150 photos a month :b
I am changing the position of the object to vertical and side but when I save it to medium it doesn’t capture it into on object, it renders all vertical side and normal angles so the scan looks whack
Me again:) i am having trouble with polycam cutting off the wooden baseplate, isolating the object. And also when i turn the object on the side or upside down, polycam mixes the sides and creates a weird object. It seems it does not know the part was rotated. Any suggestions?
Is there a setting so the final render is not digitized. Maybe using a cleaner backdrop and better lighting. Lookin to do this for products such as clothing and jewelry and need a real rotating image. I’m sure it doesn’t but figured I’d ask.
when i use measure tool on the model it didn't give me the real measure that the model has how can i fix this ? I want exactly dimensions before printing the model

Hi, Andrew, thanks for the video! However I do ran into a problem when exporting it to AUTODESK INVENTOR, I exported scanned item using a OBJ file, and when i opened it in Inventor, the scale was not 1:1, it got shrunk down quite a bit. any suggestions? thanks!

What have happened to the web version?? In the version before this one, you could see the circle turning and now you are measuring in the right direction. And you could see if you had the right, shortest distance because the measuring was continuously updating. Now you only get the measurement by clicking the endpoint. I thought I measured the ceiling 3.11m but by turning the model it wasn’t a perpendicular measuring and is was only 2.5m high UPDATE: Still nothing changed at the Polycam webstie, it only got worse. Now I can’t even get to my project from last year because I every time will be thrown back to the top of the page. UPDATE: Now I only can measure in inch, there’s no option anymore for mm. @@AndrewSink I got it to work. I try for at least 40 pics. Also, I'm wondering if it's because I was using Portrait pictures as well. I tried landscape and it worked. Thanks.
