What is a Shower Diverter?

- I was in the shower recently when I thought "How does that shower thing work?". obviously its a valve of some sort but it seemed so lightweight and I knew it couldn't have electronics, but I had trouble finding anything helpful online even shower diverter repair videos were useless.
So I decided to try and make my own shower diverter valve demonstration piece out of pvc and a water hose. Shower diverters are obviously more sophisticated and complex but I wasn't looking to be a certified plumber. I just wanted to know what that thing to turn the shower on actually did.
If I helped you understand how it works a little better consider subscribing!

Bro. This is literally the best video on the internet. Like if you were to rate the content to information to entertainment to pacing ratio. This video would beat every other video on the internet. If I could like more than once I would
Thank you!! I appreciate this comment a lot! What other questions should I make videos out of?
@@thechuckyboi1438 you could always explain the toilet. Which is something I don’t really understand either lol
I wish there were little micro educational vids on everything we find normal.. I seem to think similar to you.. so I thank you for your time and efforts, much appreciated
I was hooking up my own bath/shower, and wanted to make sure there wasn’t some weird thing I had to do to also have a working shower! So this helped my brain to relax! Now I guess I might just be smarter 😂
I love seeing comments like this. Happy I was able to help you!
Exactly what I wanted to know. Love that you engineered your own.
Thank you I appreciate the feebldback!
Well done, thank you. I am tracking a leak and this is the ticket to understanding the problem!!!
That is cool to hear that I was able to help you! I hope the repair goes smooth!
This video is awesome! Exactly what I was wondering. Finally, a simple and helpful explanation.
I just googled the exact same thing - and found you! Way to be the change you want to see!
Your video production is what UA-cam always meant to be!. Love it
Dude, thank you so much for this video! So cool that you made a PVC model 😂 You're a legend.
Very helpful. Good explanation and nice visual demonstration.
Very helpful and entertaining, thanks!
Good presentation, friend, delivered in an understandable and friendly way. Thanks!
Awesome video! Thank you for explaining this.
Very helpful and easy to understand thank you!
thank you for your explanations, helped a lot
This is great dude. Thanks!
Superb explanation. Thanks.
Thank you! Happy I was able to help
This is one of the most amazing demos I've seen! I've searched on youtube to learn exactly what you mentioned here :D
Thanks for your comment I love to hear feedback from everyone!
I love your self-deprecating humour, when actually you're very good at what you do. Thanks for taking the time, and spending your own money, to make the explanatory model. I had a pretty good idea that was how they worked but you explained it in a very easy to understand way. Appreciate what you do a lot. Hope you make some money out of this vid. Thanks.
Thank you for your comment! I do have some intelligence but I find it easier to learn things when the pressure of already having knowledge isn’t there so I try to do that through the self deprecating humor. Your comment is very encouraging I want to make more videos but I have no idea what to do haha I guess they need to add more interesting components to showers!!
Great video! I'm dealing with an issue with my bathtub spout, and I was wondering how it worked.
Quite helpful! This had been bothering me for a while. THANKS!!
YOU’RE WELCOME!!!!
hey that was cooler than i expected. You made a water diverter. @The Chucky Boi
Thank you exactly what I needed to know appreciate it
Amazing explanation sir. Thank you. I’m a new plumber so this helped
Lmfao I’m not even a plumber but I’m happy I was able to connect some dots for you!
Thank you!! Hooking ours up right now, troubleshooting why it’s not working and this helped!
Awesome! I love to hear whenever this stuff helps people even months after I did it!!!
Thx man! Pretty close to how I actually thought it worked but I always assumed itd be more complicated bc that’s usually just how things are. Turns out it’s simple!
No problem, I always assumed so too I figured there was some complicated mechanics or magnets involved lmao but I ruled those out still having no idea how it worked. Happy I was able to help you!
thanks man, i appreciate the easy-to-understand video
Yessirrrrr thank you for your comment!! Happy to hear this video is still helping people!
Thank you, you explained exactly what I was looking for.
You’re welcome! It’s nice to see how many people have been helped by this video!
Thanks for the video man. Did not realize the shower/ faucet was a constant open line to one another. Closing the line at the faucet forces the water to go up and out an open system to the shower head.
Neither did I, happy I could help!
Thank you! Another random shower thought answered!
Thank you for this. Mine broke and I couldn't figure out how the pieces were supposed to go together until this video. It's stupid how difficult it was to find a picture or anything to go off of
Wow I didn’t expect my video to be that good of a demonstration. It makes me happy to hear that you were able to save a couple bucks with this video!
Thanks. That’s a lot
Of water pressure that gets pushed to the head.
very helpful. thanks
Super interesting!
Very useful. ❤ Thank you. Now…. Please Make a video on the inner workings of the Moen 1222 shower mixing valve. Most commonly used. I bought a new valve for my shower and it does not work. Ugh
great video - thank you!
Thank you!
Well done.
Thanks!
nice! i was really wondering this same thing lol. So gravity is the only thing keeping the water from reaching the shower head in "tub mode" pretty cool.
Thank you for the comment!
Enjoyed your video buddy.. Have a good day..
You too, thank you!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Helped for me. I had water bugs and I wanted a way to stop them this helps bc now I know it's a stopper within itself thanks
Yessir, good luck getting it resolved! Make sure you re deal anything you take out of the wall.
I'm not taking anything out of the wall after watching this I can just keep that plug piece up and I'll also keep the drain clog closed.
@@nellel9561 I see, well I wish you luck and in the event you have a different style of tub spout I’d recommend reaching out to a plumber or maybe following a tutorial on how to get rid of them.
Nice job
Thank you!
Thx soooooo much my head would have exploded if I did not know how it works
Haha I know what you mean, thank you for your comment it’s very encouraging to hear from the people I help!
Thanks
No problem
Oh my god.. THANKS!!!! lol
Awesomeeee.... thank youuuuu... I am another crazy one who asks everything and wants to learn and DIY them all, evvvrything... ;)
Thank you for the support!
Great explanation. My tub has 2 diverters, on the handle and the spout, and Im deciding if i should replace the spout with a new one w/o a diverter.
I have not heard of that, does that mean you have to pull both plungers in order to run the shower?
@@thechuckyboi1438 No you can choose either one. I always use the diverter on the shower faucet, but the one on the spout is stuck.
■■■...BUT you didn't answer the age old question: how does the valve STAY in the up position? Yikes.
Drain Gang
Based video
How does it stay in the up position??? water pressure???
Great video!
I bought a portable water softener for my apartment shower and the thing is heavy (6lbs)! Let's say for whatever reason, the showerhead snaps the pipe. That means no water will come out of the shower pipe unless I turn on the water and diverter right?
Thanks for your comment, I’ll preface this by saying I’m j out a plumber and have no training I made this video out of pure interest.
But if I understand the question you want to make sure that if the pipe snaps off the shower head then will you be able to run the bath without water coming from the top. If that is not your question feel free to expand.
If that is your question I’d say it depends on your bathtub nozzle and water pressure. Because if your bathtub faucet is clogged up and the water flow rate exceeds the faucets then it will start to fill up the shower pipe in the wall until it spills out of the top.
Depending on when your apartment was built you should be fine, but also consider buying some wire frame supports and maybe adding some support by connecting the water softener to a wall to take the weight off the pipe.
Good luck! And let me know how it goes!
I always wondered why it keeps leaking, i guess that seal wasn't sealed enough
That could be it, I’d recommend contacting an actual plumber to check it out if you have a serious issue!
Do you know what causes the pull tab to stay up when showering, but fall down when there is no water coming through?
I tried to explain it using the pvc but it is the water pressure. The water pressure is the force that keeps the valve up in the air while water is running. But once the water is turned off there isn’t as much(or any) water pressure anymore so it lets the valve fall. Hope this helps!
Wait, but if the water's at full pressure, the water should come out the shower head shouldn't it? how does the shower head not spew water???
If the water had enough pressure then yes it would come out of both the shower and bathtub. Most homes do not have enough pressure to do this.
Good question though! And thanks for the comment!
Excellent Demonstration Piece and the explanation. I had a Moen Faucet and wanted to know how it work, but could not find anything from Googling. For details of the Moen construction, please refer to "Water Not Coming Out Of Shower Head? Tub Spout Diverter Repair" ua-cam.com/video/_2tiphE8PYI/v-deo.html Excellent repair video, but it did not explain how it works. I try to put in my explanation here and hope to help others who are interested in how it works. Rubber Seal with a hole in the center. The faucet water inlet hole is bigger than the hole of the rubber seal, but smaller than the seal itself. So the rubber seal could seal off the inlet hole completely when pulled to the UP position, forcing water to come out of the shower. The water pressure coming into the center hole of the seal can inflate the rubber seal slightly to produce a water tight setup. Therefore, a soft rubber seal is important. When it is too old it can harden and would not provide a water tight setup. It shows how clever this design is. The water pressure on the Plastic Gate would hold the Gate in the UP position. The Gate would not fall down because of frictional force. However, if the water supply is cut, The Gate would not be held there and falls to the DOWN position and this also the default position. So, next time you turn on the water, it would come out from the faucet and not the shower. When showering (ie, Gate in the UP position), if you manually push down the rod/button, you can overcome the frictional force created by the water supply and get the Gate back to the DOWN position, stopping the showering, and let water come out of the faucet. Note 1, the faucet water inlet hole is inside the faucet you have to use a light to find it. Note 2, water tight to the water inlet hole and around the circular plastic ring surrounding the rubber seal on the Gate, you have to examine a diverter repair kit to appreciate the design.
Anybody have blue shit come out when they cleaned the head with some vinegar?
Clearly doesn't know what poor is. However good vid.
