What is a Shower Diverter?

  • I was in the shower recently when I thought "How does that shower thing work?". obviously its a valve of some sort but it seemed so lightweight and I knew it couldn't have electronics, but I had trouble finding anything helpful online even shower diverter repair videos were useless.
    So I decided to try and make my own shower diverter valve demonstration piece out of pvc and a water hose. Shower diverters are obviously more sophisticated and complex but I wasn't looking to be a certified plumber. I just wanted to know what that thing to turn the shower on actually did.

    Great video!
    I bought a portable water softener for my apartment shower and the thing is heavy (6lbs)! Let's say for whatever reason, the showerhead snaps the pipe. That means no water will come out of the shower pipe unless I turn on the water and diverter right?

    • @thechuckyboi1438
      @thechuckyboi1438  8 місяців тому

      Thanks for your comment, I’ll preface this by saying I’m j out a plumber and have no training I made this video out of pure interest.
      But if I understand the question you want to make sure that if the pipe snaps off the shower head then will you be able to run the bath without water coming from the top. If that is not your question feel free to expand.
      If that is your question I’d say it depends on your bathtub nozzle and water pressure. Because if your bathtub faucet is clogged up and the water flow rate exceeds the faucets then it will start to fill up the shower pipe in the wall until it spills out of the top.
      Depending on when your apartment was built you should be fine, but also consider buying some wire frame supports and maybe adding some support by connecting the water softener to a wall to take the weight off the pipe.
      Good luck! And let me know how it goes!

    Do you know what causes the pull tab to stay up when showering, but fall down when there is no water coming through?

    • @thechuckyboi1438
      @thechuckyboi1438  6 місяців тому

      I tried to explain it using the pvc but it is the water pressure. The water pressure is the force that keeps the valve up in the air while water is running. But once the water is turned off there isn’t as much(or any) water pressure anymore so it lets the valve fall. Hope this helps!

  • @brentwejrowski
    @brentwejrowski 8 днів тому

    Wait, but if the water's at full pressure, the water should come out the shower head shouldn't it? how does the shower head not spew water???

    • @thechuckyboi1438
      @thechuckyboi1438  7 днів тому +1

      If the water had enough pressure then yes it would come out of both the shower and bathtub. Most homes do not have enough pressure to do this.
      Good question though! And thanks for the comment!

  • @davidkamyiuleung

    Excellent Demonstration Piece and the explanation. I had a Moen Faucet and wanted to know how it work, but could not find anything from Googling. For details of the Moen construction, please refer to "Water Not Coming Out Of Shower Head? Tub Spout Diverter Repair" ua-cam.com/video/_2tiphE8PYI/v-deo.html Excellent repair video, but it did not explain how it works. I try to put in my explanation here and hope to help others who are interested in how it works. Rubber Seal with a hole in the center. The faucet water inlet hole is bigger than the hole of the rubber seal, but smaller than the seal itself. So the rubber seal could seal off the inlet hole completely when pulled to the UP position, forcing water to come out of the shower. The water pressure coming into the center hole of the seal can inflate the rubber seal slightly to produce a water tight setup. Therefore, a soft rubber seal is important. When it is too old it can harden and would not provide a water tight setup. It shows how clever this design is. The water pressure on the Plastic Gate would hold the Gate in the UP position. The Gate would not fall down because of frictional force. However, if the water supply is cut, The Gate would not be held there and falls to the DOWN position and this also the default position. So, next time you turn on the water, it would come out from the faucet and not the shower. When showering (ie, Gate in the UP position), if you manually push down the rod/button, you can overcome the frictional force created by the water supply and get the Gate back to the DOWN position, stopping the showering, and let water come out of the faucet. Note 1, the faucet water inlet hole is inside the faucet you have to use a light to find it. Note 2, water tight to the water inlet hole and around the circular plastic ring surrounding the rubber seal on the Gate, you have to examine a diverter repair kit to appreciate the design.
