I loved the scene where Vintage Story was a car and it exploded. 😁 There is definitely room for improvement when it comes to purchasing the game. Anyhow, great video and thanks for the support
I really hope this becomes purchasable through steam, since where I'm from the only payment method I have access to is mainly why I prefer buying games from Steam only.
Here's my take on it: Devs make enough money for the creative freedom. They hesitate to scale because this means more responsibility and management which they rather deal with later on when the game is more finished. Explosive growth isn't always desirable.
This. They have an answer to “why isn’t this on Steam” that goes over pretty much this- they don’t like the cut steam takes, and like the independence their current model gives them (as do I 🎉) but they also said that they would consider a steam release when the game’s in a more complete shape. I don’t that unpopularity is nearly the problem people make it out to be at the moment…
As the developer of dwarf fortress once said. It's better to make a great experience for a few people, then it is to make an ok experience for everyone. (I might be slightly off on the exact language, but the sentiment is there) Niche game's know who they're targeting and exactly what they want, and so can make a better experience then a broad appeal game ever can (If you fall into the niche in question)
Apparently, that is by design. The devs don't want the game to blow up until they feel it is a good competitor for Minecraft -- they said they are only about 10% of the way there
Rimmy Downunder is currently making a Vintage Story Township RP multiplayer series with like idk 20~40 people and it really displays the game as a really cool eldritch semi-realistic survival game that would be a MASSIVE hit if easily accessible with modded multiplayer. I'm waiting for session 3 to come out.
Actually it's roughly 40-80 ish, cap was at 100 but the gang have stopped letting people join, partly because of the massive stability/performance issues of having a insane amount of people
You just only see like 20-40 of us because we're running in towns and very few in Town A (that's the other town) stream and the ones that do, don't advertise it that much. We are, like XBlaster here says, around double your estimate there. Hopefully if the stress test for my voice chat mod goes well session 4 will be using another method for proximity voice chat so we don't have the problems we just had with mumble! ^_^
@@xblaster926I’m hoping that they end up doing a season 2 or something. Rimmy was musing that having two more towns pop up would be awesome so long as the server and everything gets upgraded or more mp support from VS devs
I learned about it from Rimmy's stream, and I didn't realize it wasn't modded Minecraft until an hour in. There were people in his chat that didn't grasp it until he told them several hours in. Was shocked to see it's been around awhile. I didn't have much an issue with buying the game personally. But it is rather sad that steam is basically required to get eyes on a game. It feels almost like a racket.
A racket? Not really. Steam is a service for both players and developers and the cost is indicative of its quality steam may take a steep cut from your sales but they also host the game itself plus modded content on their servers, process payments, provide a forum, and not least of all advertise your game every time people use the service. Thats just to say getting eyes on things has never been free and while the devs are trying to save money by only using platforms that give them most if not all of the profits the game is paying a cost of low visibility essentially being spread by youtubers and word of mouth as a marketing strategy which is much harder to do in such a saturated market.
@@nileboy5055 Steam is good for the players. Bad for developers because of the cut steam takes. But the MASSIVE audience steam has makes up for its cuts. This is why epic started. They are more kind to devs in regards to pricing than steam. BY ALOT. They are just less UI friendly and less well known than steam.
@dylanmcshane9976 epic started their web store because they want PC game distribution profits they may have a more generous price cut for devs but that's because they don't have anything else to offer.
That 100 day video is the reason I started playing. I didn’t have any trouble or a hard time downloading or playing the game off of the official website. The open source community and the ease of downloading mods at a single click was honestly amazing. I personally think this game is everything I’ve always wanted Minecraft to be and more. I’ll always love Minecraft but Vintage Story has completely stolen my heart and I’ve already sunk around 120 hours into it and I’m still having a blast. The ease of customization when creating a world is also amazing to me especially when you can drastically change the difficulty in MANY different ways, I also appreciated the ability to completely make monsters harmless so I can just focus on exploration and building and fully learn the mechanics of the game without being gangbanged by wolves or bears everywhere. If you’ve loved Minecraft and played it since day 1 like I have, than you’ll absolutely love Vintage Story too. 1000% a game you don’t wanna sleep on if you think it looks fun to play.
100% same!! Found it through the 100 days n I really enjoy being able to just vibe without fearing for my life constantly XD I grew up playing mc and my all time fave mod to pmay was terrafirma craft, i've played it for years so seeing vintage story instantly caught my attention and I couldn't resit buying it
I saw Foxfire's video in my recommended a couple times and dismissed it as "Oh, a minecraft mod. Neat." Then I watched it and was blown away by how intricate the gameplay is. I'm really tempted to play it.
Same story here, too bad that where i live, its hard to buy games online outside of storefronts, and my pc is shit anyway, hope the game gets popular and ported to console.
to me, the niche factor of vintage story is part of the appeal. i think the modern desire for there to be "content" of everything is borderline dystopian, because in my opinion, a game is at its best when it's allowed to just be a game. when a game gets too popular or its IP owners too ambitious it has to fulfill certain expectations or meet certain goals, and sometimes trying to follow those expectations can ruin a game. minecraft itself is a damn good example of this in my opinion; now that it's wildly popular, expectations from fans have elevated to the degree that a notable portion of the fanbase is disappointed anytime the game updates. no matter what mojang does people are going to be unsatisfied, because it feels odd to some folks that the devs for the best-selling game of all time under the payroll of perhaps the most valuable company on earth can't do more with a game they're very invested in. and to build off of that last bit; microsoft itself isn't content with minecraft just being one full game you buy once or maybe twice, so now its being monetized in all sorts of ways, ranging from being riddled with in-game purchases on some platforms, to making abysmally-performing pricey spinoffs (minecraft legends literally only has 18 people playing it as i write this, why did they even bother) which puts a slog on actual development, not to mention raising the overall price of the game. arguably the best time to get into minecraft was around a smidge over a decade ago, just as it was gaining traction online from folks like the yogscast playing it, and as far as i can tell as a new arrival to vintage story, we're just short of that point in vintage story's history, n i'm in no rush to reach the precedented conclusion to this sort of game gettin super popular.
I insist, this game would be perfect for a 100 player civilization kind of video because it's actually hard and complicated and forces people to work together to achieve goals faster
Well I have good news for both of you. I'm currently part of an event like that in vs, in the next month or so the video will release and hopefully get a whole bunch of people interested.
I don't know if wide scale exposure is really what the game needs. Sure it'd be good for profitability, but it wouldn't really have as much of an effect on the people playing the game. The game succeeds by being a good game, I don't think we really need an ocean of video content to go with it when it's more than fun enough to just sit down and actually play it. The purchase/account thing being reworked would be kinda nice.
After seeing so many passion project games crumple under the weight of public pressure on vast commercial gamer scale, I really don't think explosive growth holds any value for a game like this. Huge audiences expect nine women to make fifty babies in nine months. Word of mouth growth is fine for now
I saw the 100 days in vintage story video as well as the Minecraft for grown ups vid in my recommended, so I definitely feel the whole “found by chance” thing. Glad it happened though, this game has some of the most fun mechanics I’ve seen in a survival game for quite a while, and I do hope it continues to grow in popularity
I found the game when Rimmy streamed it a month or so back. I've been extremely addicted since. Buying the game was definitely a pain and took much longer then it should have.
Back over a year ago, when I got back into Minecraft, YT decided to recommend me episode 4 of Kurrazarh's VS starter guide. I instantly thought that it is the change of pace I need in MC and the rest is history. My problem is, have I not forgotten about TerrafirmaCraft over the years I probably wouldn't've bought the game. As much as it pains me to say so, VS imo only trully started to develop an identity once they added rifts. I hope the devs will focus on exactly this in the future too, bc every time I showed VS to my friends they couldn't believe I payed money for a MC mod. Once the game has set itself apart from MC and it's mods enough, I think then it would be marketable. I think this "identity" will stem from the advanced rift-technology, temporal storms, temporal instability (hopefully some kind of pollution will be added), lore and NPCs who not only act as traders, but issue quests.
It definitely offers a lot of unique things that serve as a great palate cleansers to Minecraft. I agree. I think the more it leans into it's strengths, the better. It should never try to be something it's not (MC)
yes we need to be able to enter the rift dimension with our night vision goggles and eventually fight that big guy we see during the storms lol then all the rifts close and we find out all the drifters we have been killing were just vintarians that got trapped on the other side during the experiments we read about in the lore :)
One thing that can easily be done is to make Vintage Story downloadable in one click, you still need an account to play anyways. So why just not have a big DOWNLOAD button on the home page and have some kind of disclaimer that you need an account first.
I would love to see a youtube series where a bunch of strangers play Vintage Story together, with their class being based on their irl profession. A seamstress playing the tailor, a soldier or veteran playing the Black Guard, a mechanical engineer playing the Clock Maker, an actual hunter playing the hunter, an ex-con playing the Malefactor, and some other profession (maybe the youtuber who makes the videos, maybe a blacksmith or something) being the commoner. Would watch.
The recent Otz (really Rimmy's video on it, at least for me) stream server is how I got in to VS. So far, very much enjoying it. I love that Wurm meets Minecraft style it's got. Albeit, that's partly due to the serverrules of enforcing sole jobs, rather than letting everyone do whatever.
I found the game from Pr1vateLime's One Chunk challenge short video series. I was already watching his regular Project Zomboid content, and then this video came out of no-where, and piqued my curiosity. :) I feel you about the lack of video content of Vintage Story, but quite honestly... if I've learned anything in my life, it's that great niche games that pick up attention and go mainstream often lose their very soul. It's better that way.
I only knew about it being mentioned by a popular Minecraft mod showcase creator. He briefly implied he was playing this game. Another instance was another Minecraft mod reviewer that made a series of tutorials on how to play Vintage Story.
Definitely some good points here. I actually tried to buy it a couple days ago, and the website wouldn't take my card. I got to playing it after I found a link for it, and definitely plan to buy it in the future. I'm hooked, and wanna follow this one for the future updates because it has such enormous potential. I really feel like it's very close to blowing up, just needs a big ticket update to really get people talking about it. The price is really reasonable too for what you get. I highly recommend it if you can figure out how to actually get a copy in your hands.
I 100% agree with this. It's really awesome and I really can't wait to see what it looks like when the devs feel like it's feature complete. Really excited for the replacement of the crafting grid.
A guy named ItsOtz_ made a rp server it has about 70-100 people on it and one of his friends RimmyDownUnder is also on this server and he peaked like 3 thousand viewes and has around 2 thousand consistent viewers for his livestream
I literally looked this video up to figure out if the game was only found out by secret foxfires video, turns out, it was, but it’s been everything I’ve been wanting/missing in a survival game and I’m so happy I’m finally playing it cause it’s truly really fun
I only found out about this game this morning, a video about a mod just happened to show up in my feed and I didn't recognize the game. I think the best way to get attention to the game would be to bring it to the attention of someone much larger, like ssethtzeentach. He did a review for a game also not on steam called Star Sector, and the amount of people who ran out to buy it exploded. Often times when he does a review, an army of people go out and buy the game he just covered.
I searched on google "Games like PSP's The Sims 2 Castaway" and someone on reddit posted a list of survival sandbox games, most of which I already owned and loved, like Stranded, The Forest, Rimworld, Valheim, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Rust, and of course Minecraft. But then I looked up Vintage Story which was also on the list, and immediately remembered this Minecraft mod called TerraFirmaCraft, which was my definite play to play the game. It was love at first sight. Vintage story felt so familiar to me because a lot of the mechanics were very similar to TerraFirmaCraft. Absolutely love it .
I found out about this game via an youtuber name Kurazarrh. He made a lot of Vintage Story Guides, and I love watching him build all kinds of nice looking buildings.
Found out about Vintage Story from a channel named Dr. Wyrmwood. I plan on picking up the game when I can, and my friends are also very interested. People talking about the game, even very small channels has reach and helps the game grow.
Yeah I saw the 100 days vid too, but Rimmydownunder has started an RP vintage story server, it's a breath of fresh air, tho you can tell the game has some crashing issues, it has huge potential.
Couldn't agree more. I am setting up a server for my friends, and when I mentioned this to a buddy who is REALLY into survival games, he had never heard of it. THEN, when I ran to youtube to find him a good "what is Vintage Story" video to watch, I wasn't met with great options. I managed to sell him on the idea, but this game is so excellent it shouldn't take me any real effort to get someone interested who already loves crunchy survival crafters.
Wow amazing! I only found out about vintage story about a week ago by stumbling upon it deep in r/gamingsuggestions and it's now next up on my gameplay list I then just happened to stumble upon your video about it. Very refreshing and very positive toward helping build a community around a game! It's so nice to see a dev team focus on a project instead of marketing, and players supporting the dev team. It's the best thing players can do for a passionate Dev team, is too build the community for them! The gaming industry has changed so much over the years, many passion projects of games have been bought out, given up on, or totally disappeared into the obscurity of the internet. Money has become the primary concern at the expense of entertainment and creativity for much of the industry. This Dev team shows heart and love for what they do. And I really can't wait to get playing (just gotta finish this Satsuma 🚗) Anyway, as I was saying WHY DON'T WE KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME!!
I found out about it by playing Terrafirmacraft (TFC) someone mentioned that this game existed in a multiplayer server and I checked it out, watched a few videos, forgot about it, remembered it, watched more vids, eventually bought it and have had fun playing it
If this game is properly developed it will be on steam eventually I would say. It's honestly for the best that the community stays small and dedicated. This gives the devs the ability to properly interact with a community that wants to communicate with them. Minecraft and valheim are good examples of a similar strategy, for years they were niche titles still in development and didn't really hit their mainstream popularity until after many years of development. So when the influx of players appeared the game was ready and the devs could handle the influx. Early access games with small dev teams hitting a large audience too nearly early always dooms them to fail.
I found Vintage Story through one of my favorite streamers, Tomato (and mostly his VODs channel Tomato's Trash), and I have been waiting to have the time to sit down to play it as well as the right itch in my brain. It hits the right notes of hard survival mechanics and story building potential that MC has lacked for me for a long time. Rimmy's RP series that he's been able to stave off the itch until I'm able to pick it up for myself.
The game is purposely handled that way by the devs in my opinion, so I wouldn't worry about it that much. If it exits Early Access at some point, it will be monetized.
So basically the main thing holding back Vintage Story is that there isn't a lot of people doing stuff about it? When you mentioned speedrunning and challenges, I couldn't help but think it is a bit of a chicken & egg situation.
Just randomly stumbled on this game via a UA-cam rec, had never heard of it. Makes me think of Better Than Wolves MC mod the way it takes survival and slow progression seriously, as well as the way it works with mechanical power, block subdivisions, and supernatural elements. I probably won't play this anytime soon because I'm not sure that i need a Supermassive Black Hole of Time in my life, but definitely filing this in my mind to check back in on at some point. Definitely looks like it would tick a lot of the right boxes.
Been playing VS for 3 or so years after Mischief of Mice showcased it. Bought it the next day and loved it since. Watched vids on you tube from Ashantin 3, Hypnotique, and several others. Been catching MoM's twitch streams for Vintage Wednesday and Fridays. It is slowly but surely gaining new players.
Ive known about it for years, i found it on a subreddit for terrafirmacraft as an option instead of modded minecraft, best game with so many mods, im waiting for a more stable release version w more mods available and updated to do another go
I love it the way it is. The devs don’t care, they’re doing it their way. What I’m more concerned about is why is this the first time I’m seeing van racing! That’s awesome!
I got it a few days ago after Foxfire's 100 Days video got recommended to me by chance. I think once the devs delve deeper into stuff like the the rifts, the Rust World, and add more NPC's besides traders it would really set it off.
I noticed the game numerous times, wasn't until 1.19 I really wanted to play it. seems like the content he's adding as of late is really what I want 🤷🏻. I'm sure eventually it will be on steam. and for a small dev team I'm sure he's making good money. I'd rather donate a few hundred than for them to sell out.
The devs don't like paying the 30% revenue cut from steam and it reminds of a game made by one dude that had the same hate for steam. He release his first game in the near 2010's and could be downloaded online. He mentioned he didn't want to share his profit with a company that didn't do anything and never released the game on steam. Now the second game he finally decided to release his game on steam and it blew up. He beat the sales numbers of the first game in a few days. Sure he only made less than 70% for a single sale compared on his website, But the amount of sales on steam just changed everything. Even a kid understand that selling 1 copy at 70% is better than 0 at 100% price. I was following him on youtube and on steam when it released, felts nice to see someone being happy his creation worked and sold well. I can't remember the game's name nor the dude's name. Steam group vanished. Wishlist empty, Checked my sub on YT and can't find him. I never bought the game, now I only have short memory of the game and what it looked like. RIP Pretty sure Rule the Waves 3 had the same story. Dude didn't want RTW 1 and 2 on steam because money, released 3 and then It sold well.
They havent even released the second story chapter yet. This game is far from complete, and the devs are happy with the community they have and the work they're doing. They'll advertise when they're happy with what they're advertising. I dont know why people like this guy are so stuck up with the "This is whats WRONG with Vintage Story" that'll only discourage the devs and slow down or alter production. The game is fun, and the devs are happy. Not every game needs to be a multi billion dollar hit.
Kinda same, i have memory issues with my patetic little laptop, i actually have to delete saves of other games i am playing every time i want to start a new save in a game, i also find first-person games really obnoxious to play on a laptop key-board, but it doesnt make sense for me to get a stationary couputer and i dont really know if a gaming-dedicated laptop is something thats going to help me either. I am also not going to have a lot of free time in the near future anyways
I too stumbled across the game via the 100 days challenge. I bought it and enjoy playing. ❤ I also spread the news with my friends so hopefully, this pearl gets more of the well deserved love.
Started Playing... Two Years ago on and off, I heard about it from a UA-camr mentioning it during another Video, no clue who anymore, and after recetly Getting back into it, Buying it for 5 of my Friends and then Seeing Rimmy Stream it I was really excited, I hope this will grow to become a Game for many many more to Enjoy.
I had heard of Vintage Story before the 100 days video, but never really looked into it. Searched it on Steam, saw nothing, and I probably assumed it just wasn't out yet, or if it was I simply didn't know enough about it to go searching for how to buy it. The 100 Days video was what not only brought the game back to my attention, but showed my so much about what separated it from being simply a Minecraft-Clone and inspired me to go out and buy a few copies of it for myself and my friends.
steam refunding policy is a blessing. If I don't like the game or it runs poorly I can cancel my purchase after like 1h of gameplay. On the other platforms I don't have that option. The devs of vintage story said that they don't agree with that system of refunds, which for me seems very suspicious. I'm afraid the game is not good enough and the devs are trying to hide it
I would generally always say don't trust any devs as they don't care for you. However VS is an exception. They are highly against any paid monetization. The game is also a really good bang for your buck as there's so much content in it from the get-go for the asking price. It's good you want a backdoor in case something goes wrong, and i fully agree with you. But you shouldn't worry about VS. I've played it since 2021 and it's been getting countless updates and love from the dev team. They've made big leaps in progress over the years. At first I pirated it, but immediately fell in love because it and bought it. It scratched an itch that any other game was failing to do.
The reason why they don't like the Steam refund policy is because they think it is too strict. They will refund you after 10 hours of play and potentially even longer
i also found it from that lovely 100 days video. i went to check it out... but got scared away from trying it because i'm stuck on a mac laptop, and it doesn't seem optimized for that, unfortunately. i would love to see more content of the casual, well-edited, engaging adventures and game showcase as that 100 days video, but its hard to know who's videos will really click with you until you try em. would love to see the scene continue to grow
That's very interesting. I saw the video "Minecraft for Grown-Ups [Vintage Story]" from this channel called, The Show, and he talked about how minecraft isn't nostalgic and other games are making him feel the way he used too. This was relatable for me and he he said Vintage Story was absolutely epic. I said that's cool and then the 100 day video showed up in my recommended and that's what got me to buy it. I love the game personally. It's everything that I have ever wanted in a game.
I learned of the game through an mlp meme funnily enough, though I’ll admit the 100 days really got me interested in it. As someone who loves the idea of the Terrafirmacraft mod in Minecraft this game definitely seems fun.
I found out about vintage story from the foxfire 100 days video too, when i initially saw the thumbnail I thought that the video was going to be about a minecraft modpack lol.
I honestly don't quite remember when I first heard about it. I know I saw it show up on my UA-cam recommendations a handful of times before I watched a video and then basically immediately went and bought it. I don't think I'm ever going back to Minecraft now.
one of the main reasons the devs give for not putting it on steam is that steam takes a 30% cut... issue is i wont buy a game unless it is on steam, so vintage story doesnt even get the 70%. i know that they dont want to release a game that wont keep up the hype because you only have 1 chance to release a game for the first time, but i was going to buy it, many people would, especially after the rimmy streams, but no, the only way i can describe it is "unintentional gatekeeping". this game has hype, people do like to play games that get updated overtime so dont need to be 100% finished. it seems like everyone is loosing out, the devs dont have as big a community and sales they should have and potential players dont have a established way to even get the game.
Rimmy started a fundraiser livestream and an RP server on the game thats running atm, its the only reason I know the game existed. I really like the game mechanics I've seen so far.
One of the resins for lack of marketing is that that the creator of this games is not ready for it to go main stream. The lack of marketing it his way of managing the hype/expectations. He is perfectly happy with it being a hidden gem at the moment.
Found it after a DEEP reddit thread search on open world survival craft games. Looks super fun, I'm definitely going to buy it after the holidays if I don't win a key in the giveaway I'm a part of. The more realistic survival approach is super interesting!
I’ve been putting this game on for as many of my friends as possible since I’ve discovered it from the “Minecraft for grownups” video brought me to it. It deserves every bit of attention as Minecraft does, imo.
I found out about this game a long time ago; i always kept up with Terrafirmacraft, it came up in conversation that this game was in development and here we are; By the way, i imagine the devs dont want to adhere to steam due to the 30% cut that steam takes from the game's sales(that keeps up until the game makes millions)
I found this game a while ago through an obscure Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead streamer named Vormithrax. I really appreciate that the developers have not only spent the time to introduce all the complex features they have, but quality of life systems to explain the fundamental mechanics of the game and search up both recipes for and uses of items. The fact that maps and waypoints aren't gated behind in world items also ensures that you can explore early and far without having to worry about getting lost, losing your maps, or unintuitive mechanics like clicking banners for markers. Those features alone give the game a leg up over Minecraft in my books, but I have always leaned more towards the survival and tech progression side of that community. Regardless, greater advertising would be beneficial, had I seen something like the 1.18 trailer earlier, I would've purchased the game long ago. As much as part of me takes solace in the niche nature of the game, expanding the community would bring in more revenue for the developers to keep developing the game as they see fit, as well as new modders and content creators. Your description of the purchase process on their website was rather hyperbolic, but not altogether inaccurate. A redesign of the system to make it quicker and more clear, would definitely be better. Steam would definitely give them more exposure, but I think with advertising and a rework of the process of buying the game from their site, it'd be fine and they'd get 100% of the revenue instead of 70.
It was a little hyperbolic, but there are also people who aren't as computer savvy or disabled who might have a harder time than someone more familiar with these systems like us. There are so many little QoL things in this game that make it a smooth experience. It's one of our favorite things about the game.
It is an early access game. Even 9 month later, after this video has been published, it is still FAR from a finished product. I am standing on top of a block, right up against a block at the leg level, and I am trying to place a block on top of that block. The game will let me place it, but the action gets rejected, deleting the block placement and refunding it back to my inventory. It doesn't even kickback the "can't place in creature" warning. It does this when jumping and placing blocks under the player, while jumped. Stuff like that needs to be ironed out. And the game is absolutely packed with stuff just like that. Here, there, you can even play for a good while before noticing anything is even off at all. In other words, this game is nowhere even close to ready for mass release. If they started advertising and exposing this game to the audience this game is actually targeting, they would get slaughtered.
This is not me coming at you btw, i fully agree.
A guy at work told me about this game, really a hidden gem. I didn't think it was that hard to buy and play but I did think it was odd I had never heard of it
I learned about vintage story because of some guy who made a comment on a minecraft video. The comment had no likes, but I was bored enough to just look up the game. It's super fun
i saw a short clip of someone making wine in the game and i thought it was just heavily modded minecraft, so i scrolled down to the description to see what mods he was using and well, here i am
I saw two videos just yesterday, the 100 Days one you mentioned and one called "Vintage Story is Minecraft for Grownups". Besides that, only saw it on Humble and thought it was some kind of medieval RPG.
this is why ive been tempted to reborn my gameplay channel(this one) and doing something with VS, just for example, i want to travel to the edge of the world of vintage story(or around the world, i don't know how vintage story's world gen works lol) and maybe i wanna do interesting things about VS. it would also be cool if an antvenom or simplysarc type creator came in.
coming back to this, i know now, the main reason behind VS being behind their own store is because of the fact that they cannot sell it for less on their own website, meaning in order to make the same profit from each purchase, they would have to increase the price by at least 30% to account for steam's pay cut
I found Vintage Story through Cletus Bueford and The Late Shift on Twitch. Over there it has 12.4K followers. So some folks know about it. I went looking for content based on one of the MODS, VS Villages. I didn’t find much so I decided to create my own and I post on UA-cam.
Yeah I agree that getting the game holds it back. When I made the video on it, I was like you. I saw FoxFire video on and was covinced. Hopefully it grows a good community in the future!
Mannnnn, I found Vintage story because one or some of the creators made a mod for minecraft called butterfly mania. Im a passionate nature lover and fell in love with the mod itself. They stopped working on the mod to create this game and I absolutely bought it the first chance I got. Although as the video stated, the game has a lot of wonderful things going for it. It just really needs to get its name out there
Vintage Story looks like a hidden gem for sure. I would love to see more magical/alchemical/exoteric things... more monsters and things like that. But it looks so nice!!!
Only found out about the game around a week ago through Rhadamant. After catching up with his series I found Pyrrh Pianissimo's channel and watching her Icy world series. I think the game is amazing and has a lot of things I wished MC had to make the game more interesting. Anyway great vid, 100% agree
We should try to get Etho to do a series on Vintage Story. He played TerraFirmaCraft & TerraFirmaPunk before and he has a good reach into the MC community.
I found vintage story the same way I found Minecraft when it was still an unknown game, by getting recommended a video of it on UA-cam. Honestly I love it for that. It reminds me of what Minecraft used to be. I enjoy the smaller community as this has allowed for there to still be an air of mystery to the game. I also support the devs desires to keep the game off steam and not sell out. An artist who would prefer the integrity of their art over profit is always winning in my book. I also find updating and modding extremely easy with as the game is. I don’t think the game needs to blow up with success. The small stream it gets is good and keeps the community from bloating.
Honestly I really like the fact that Vintage Story started on smaller sites like itch and humble store and even has its own site. It feels good to be part of am more quiet game base, something like a secret society. Also related to why it isn't advertised, this reminds me of a story from the end of the soviet union: For the first time an advertisment appeared in a town. It was for a camera. The reaction at that time was something like: Wow I guess it's a pretty bad camera if it needs advertisment and people wouldn't recomend it normally. I always thought thai if something is really good it doesn't require some fancy ads or any ads at all, just it being spread by word from dude to dude. That way you really know it's good and it's a significantly smaller chance of it dissapointing you.
The developer said he doesn't want the flood gates open like releasing on steam. He can take his time and make sure it's quality instead of being rushed. He actually said what we're playing now is about 10% of what he wants it to be when he's done
I loved the scene where Vintage Story was a car and it exploded. 😁
There is definitely room for improvement when it comes to purchasing the game. Anyhow, great video and thanks for the support
We were so excited to see you liked the video! It meant a lot to us. Thanks for making such an awesome game
if this was on steam i would buy it in a heartbeat.
I really hope this becomes purchasable through steam, since where I'm from the only payment method I have access to is mainly why I prefer buying games from Steam only.
looks like a fun game i want to buy it im going to wait untill its on steam
awesome game but if you want it to become successful you need to release it on steam
Here's my take on it:
Devs make enough money for the creative freedom.
They hesitate to scale because this means more responsibility and management which they rather deal with later on when the game is more finished.
Explosive growth isn't always desirable.
This. plus the masive uptick in server cost and all that... is not always good... especially if they dont stick.
(I might be slightly off on the exact language, but the sentiment is there)
Niche game's know who they're targeting and exactly what they want, and so can make a better experience then a broad appeal game ever can (If you fall into the niche in question)
I agree and in another year or two maybe it will be polished or finished enough for them to market it better
Why can't they just chillout like Terraria.
did you guys saw last one were they found out they accidentally made the bigest server ever on the game?
@@xblaster926I’m hoping that they end up doing a season 2 or something. Rimmy was musing that having two more towns pop up would be awesome so long as the server and everything gets upgraded or more mp support from VS devs
@BroRecon maybee but I'd say VS would need a lot more server/MP support and possibly mumble/voip mods might need a upgrade to make happen
Hence why steam keeps ruling@@nileboy5055
Me?
I found out about VS on 4chan, got very interested and bought it
That 100 day video is the reason I started playing.
I endorse this message!
I'm biased, but you should absolutely give it a chance. It's worth every penny.
Same story here, too bad that where i live, its hard to buy games online outside of storefronts, and my pc is shit anyway, hope the game gets popular and ported to console.
It's actually made based of minecraft mod Vintagecraft, which in itself was "less complicated version of TerraFirmaCraft"
@jarlboof It runs smoother than Minecraft and humble is available in most countries so you may still be able to play it. Don't give up hope.
to me, the niche factor of vintage story is part of the appeal. i think the modern desire for there to be "content" of everything is borderline dystopian, because in my opinion, a game is at its best when it's allowed to just be a game. when a game gets too popular or its IP owners too ambitious it has to fulfill certain expectations or meet certain goals, and sometimes trying to follow those expectations can ruin a game.
minecraft itself is a damn good example of this in my opinion; now that it's wildly popular, expectations from fans have elevated to the degree that a notable portion of the fanbase is disappointed anytime the game updates. no matter what mojang does people are going to be unsatisfied, because it feels odd to some folks that the devs for the best-selling game of all time under the payroll of perhaps the most valuable company on earth can't do more with a game they're very invested in.
and to build off of that last bit; microsoft itself isn't content with minecraft just being one full game you buy once or maybe twice, so now its being monetized in all sorts of ways, ranging from being riddled with in-game purchases on some platforms, to making abysmally-performing pricey spinoffs (minecraft legends literally only has 18 people playing it as i write this, why did they even bother) which puts a slog on actual development, not to mention raising the overall price of the game.
arguably the best time to get into minecraft was around a smidge over a decade ago, just as it was gaining traction online from folks like the yogscast playing it, and as far as i can tell as a new arrival to vintage story, we're just short of that point in vintage story's history, n i'm in no rush to reach the precedented conclusion to this sort of game gettin super popular.
Heartily agree, the longer it stays Indie level in purchases the safer it is from being ruined.
I insist, this game would be perfect for a 100 player civilization kind of video because it's actually hard and complicated and forces people to work together to achieve goals faster
True! I could see some really cool content in that realm being made.
Well I have good news for both of you. I'm currently part of an event like that in vs, in the next month or so the video will release and hopefully get a whole bunch of people interested.
@@rooster6199 Woah! Who is organizing the event? I reckon it will be much fun!
@@kowa8846mossy from the 5 exes discord and and yt channel. We just did the last session and the vid will probably be out in a little over a month
@@rooster6199How it go? Will there be more events?
Word of mouth growth is fine for now
Insane analogy lol
Crazy but really good analogy
I saw the 100 days in vintage story video as well as the Minecraft for grown ups vid in my recommended, so I definitely feel the whole “found by chance” thing. Glad it happened though, this game has some of the most fun mechanics I’ve seen in a survival game for quite a while, and I do hope it continues to grow in popularity
Us too! It has so many little features and quality of life things that it feels great to play.
I found the game when Rimmy streamed it a month or so back. I've been extremely addicted since.
Buying the game was definitely a pain and took much longer then it should have.
Rimmy now posted an edited version of a multiplayer session.
Me too m8 now I'm in a hole with 37 pots of stew, living the good life
100% agreed! Found it by chance because Conquest announced they were porting their texture pack to VS. Never heard of the game before that
Also found out about the game through Conquest Reforged.
same
Back over a year ago, when I got back into Minecraft, YT decided to recommend me episode 4 of Kurrazarh's VS starter guide.
I believe you will get exactly what you want in the newest build 1.20 check it out!
One thing that can easily be done is to make Vintage Story downloadable in one click, you still need an account to play anyways. So why just not have a big DOWNLOAD button on the home page and have some kind of disclaimer that you need an account first.
me watching this video was a result of me checking to see if any new videos about vintage story were uploaded
I feel you about the lack of video content of Vintage Story, but quite honestly... if I've learned anything in my life, it's that great niche games that pick up attention and go mainstream often lose their very soul.
The guy named Rimmy is also making videos about it there is only one up rn
I found the game through Private Lime, he had an Artic challenge series running recently.
Great video! I agree this game has so much potential. I myself tell everyone about it and have purchased approximately 8 copies 😅
Thank you! It really seems like the game is starting to gain more traction.
why have you bought so many copies? did you gift them?
you give me one?
UA-cam recommended sometimes just delivers lol found out about a lot of random awesome stuff that way.
Its like what playing Minecraft was like 12 years ago when I first played it 😂
I found out about this game via an youtuber name Kurazarrh.
He made a lot of Vintage Story Guides, and I love watching him build all kinds of nice looking buildings.
His guides are very helpful!
@@TheVintarian ♥
Found out about Vintage Story from a channel named Dr. Wyrmwood. I plan on picking up the game when I can, and my friends are also very interested. People talking about the game, even very small channels has reach and helps the game grow.
Yeah I saw the 100 days vid too, but Rimmydownunder has started an RP vintage story server, it's a breath of fresh air, tho you can tell the game has some crashing issues, it has huge potential.
I've never had any crashes, but that doesn't mean they don't happen.
I only found out about vintage story about a week ago by stumbling upon it deep in r/gamingsuggestions and it's now next up on my gameplay list
I then just happened to stumble upon your video about it.
And I really can't wait to get playing (just gotta finish this Satsuma 🚗)
Anyway, as I was saying
WHY DON'T WE KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME!!
Thank you! We 100% agree. It is definitely a hidden gem and the community is awesome!
Great video btw good editing
Thanks! We spent a lot of time on it, so I'm glad that shows.
So basically the main thing holding back Vintage Story is that there isn't a lot of people doing stuff about it?
When you mentioned speedrunning and challenges, I couldn't help but think it is a bit of a chicken & egg situation.
I can see what you mean. Though, someone has to be the first chicken.... or egg
The bigger videos that have come out recently are really growing the player base.
@@TheVintarian I know MoM still gets a few people popping in stream asking if it is a minecraft mod.
Ive known about it for years, i found it on a subreddit for terrafirmacraft as an option instead of modded minecraft, best game with so many mods, im waiting for a more stable release version w more mods available and updated to do another go
I found out when I went into Minecraft 100 day hole. It was one of the recommended :’) that was literally 2 days ago
Welcome!
I love it the way it is. The devs don’t care, they’re doing it their way. What I’m more concerned about is why is this the first time I’m seeing van racing! That’s awesome!
I don’t know what you are talking about the website store is easy, and the account you make on the website is also for the mod database
I got it a few days ago after Foxfire's 100 Days video got recommended to me by chance. I think once the devs delve deeper into stuff like the the rifts, the Rust World, and add more NPC's besides traders it would really set it off.
Yeah, it really does have so much potential!
RIP
Pretty sure Rule the Waves 3 had the same story. Dude didn't want RTW 1 and 2 on steam because money, released 3 and then It sold well.
Yeah, the devs have their reasons and I can respect that. I think when they feel it's ready they'll consider it more.
@@TheVintarian hope so. More players, more visibility.
I'm just waiting for my computer to be able to get it at the moment
Kinda same, i have memory issues with my patetic little laptop, i actually have to delete saves of other games i am playing every time i want to start a new save in a game, i also find first-person games really obnoxious to play on a laptop key-board, but it doesnt make sense for me to get a stationary couputer and i dont really know if a gaming-dedicated laptop is something thats going to help me either. I am also not going to have a lot of free time in the near future anyways

ngl, i actually loved buying the game on the website. it felt like i was buying minecraft back in the day. i love the website so much lol
I can understand this. It was a bit nostalgic. I bought Minecraft in the alpha days so I know what you're talking about.
You make great points. But I think the devs have some kinda "ideological" opposition to "selling out."
I too stumbled across the game via the 100 days challenge. I bought it and enjoy playing. ❤
I also spread the news with my friends so hopefully, this pearl gets more of the well deserved love.
As someone who purchased Vintage Story because of Secret Foxfire’s video, I absolutely adore this game and I wish it was more popular.
LetsGameItOut playing this game and it will blow up!!!
That's really awesome to hear!
I don't think I'm ever going back to Minecraft now.
one of the main reasons the devs give for not putting it on steam is that steam takes a 30% cut... issue is i wont buy a game unless it is on steam, so vintage story doesnt even get the 70%. i know that they dont want to release a game that wont keep up the hype because you only have 1 chance to release a game for the first time, but i was going to buy it, many people would, especially after the rimmy streams, but no, the only way i can describe it is "unintentional gatekeeping". this game has hype, people do like to play games that get updated overtime so dont need to be 100% finished. it seems like everyone is loosing out, the devs dont have as big a community and sales they should have and potential players dont have a established way to even get the game.
update. a friend convinced me to just buy the game from the store so i was proven wrong in a year lmao
Rimmy started a fundraiser livestream and an RP server on the game thats running atm, its the only reason I know the game existed. I really like the game mechanics I've seen so far.
I hope the vintage story will be on Steam!!
I saw the same video and had the same feeling of a lack of diverse content, I'm glad someone with more reach said something about it
bro, minecraft was never on steam and look how big it got.
Vintage was originally a mod for Minecraft i believe then the developers decided to port and recreate the mod into its own engine and its own game
We 100% agree!
I learned about it from UA-cam challenges like the arctic challenge someone did. Now me, my girlfriend, and one of my friends are playing it together
I found this game by pure chance, someone on a forum mentioned it and it has quickly become one of my favorite games
I found out about this game a long time ago; i always kept up with Terrafirmacraft, it came up in conversation that this game was in development and here we are;
By the way, i imagine the devs dont want to adhere to steam due to the 30% cut that steam takes from the game's sales(that keeps up until the game makes millions)
This is not me coming at you btw, i fully agree.
@@thegrilledpopsicle5439 What I said is no less true today than it was then.
i just started playing this game and i found it through that "Minecraft for grown ups" video you showed, thought it was a mod pack at first too
A guy at work told me about this game, really a hidden gem.
Besides that, only saw it on Humble and thought it was some kind of medieval RPG.
i found vintage story from paul soares jr
ME TOO! I wish he'd come back around to play it with the new updates that have been out since. It's been a while.
this is why ive been tempted to reborn my gameplay channel(this one) and doing something with VS, just for example, i want to travel to the edge of the world of vintage story(or around the world, i don't know how vintage story's world gen works lol) and maybe i wanna do interesting things about VS. it would also be cool if an antvenom or simplysarc type creator came in.
coming back to this, i know now, the main reason behind VS being behind their own store is because of the fact that they cannot sell it for less on their own website, meaning in order to make the same profit from each purchase, they would have to increase the price by at least 30% to account for steam's pay cut
The game finally popped into my algorithm. Will be buying it asap. This guy is right, alot of people would be playing this if they knew it existed
That's what I'm saying! The game is so underrated.
I found Vintage Story through Cletus Bueford and The Late Shift on Twitch. Over there it has 12.4K followers. So some folks know about it. I went looking for content based on one of the MODS, VS Villages. I didn’t find much so I decided to create my own and I post on UA-cam.
That is awesome!
Yeah I agree that getting the game holds it back. When I made the video on it, I was like you. I saw FoxFire video on and was covinced. Hopefully it grows a good community in the future!
First of all, thanks for stopping by! I truly believe the game is going places.
It just really needs to get its name out there
Random UA-cam video is the thing that got me in vintage story, and I'm not other block game enjoyer.
Seen a guy review vintage story then seen the 100 day vid after. Never new it was 7 YEARS OLD DAMN
Truly a labor of love
I found this game on a “TOP 10 BEST MINECRAFT ALTERNATIVES!” Article
One of my favorite zomboid youtubers started playing it and that's how I learned of it's existence.
