    Pluck the silk of a spiderweb and it vibrates like a guitar string, scientists say. By strumming the strands and detecting the vibrations via sensors in its legs, a spider information about meals and mates.

    Spiders can change the vibrational frequency of individual silk threads - they actually tune (and pluck) their webs! It's already amazing that a creature equipped with such a small brain and limited eyesight can create complex structures -- and now this:

    When I was a kid I used to play with spiders, I would grab flies or roaches and throw them in the web, that's when I noticed that they focused on the vibration. I would grab a stick and mimic the vibration. I also loved watching them build the spider web. I learned a lot. Spiders are very interesting 😊

      Yeah, they keep to themselves and eat other pests. They're fine with me.

    This is so cool. A beautiful example on the role of acoustics in life, spiders could probably play the whole orchestra on their web.

    So, whenever you base your opinion on what a guitar player says, just consider the size of the brain of a spider.

    Very informative, thank you for this video! It's odd, I was just outside the house today and a friend dared me to touch one of the spider webs outdoors. I was surprised of how sturdy it was, and I was literally able to pluck it like a rubber band!

    Thank you very much for producing such a wonderful video. Science communication is a difficult task and you made it simple, enjoyable, cute and funny all in one short video. Please make more of these!!!

    I loved the animated explanation, I don't like spiders but it was fun to watch this one. And of course, your straightforward way to explain it was welcomed.

    This is misleading. Tenions in the springs radial "webbings" have to be symmetrical if the web is also symmetrical across the 2 dimensions in the plane. Which means it's impossible to have different vibrations in every string.

    • @vneckexhibition
      @vneckexhibition 6 років тому +2

      The video IS misleading. The scientific paperwork it links to mentions not nine different frequencies on each transverse strand, but just two different frequencies, one for longitudinal (asterisk shaped) strands, and a different frequency for transverse (hexagon/stop sign shaped) strands.

    Geez i have more respect for spiders.I tore down a large web going across my walkway.Got ready for bed that evening, and i swear this huge spider was sitting on my nightstand staring at me . It looked exactly like the one whose web I destroyed.Scared the living crap out me.This thing was huge , it had to come into the house thru the front or rear door.How it found my room i will never know.s p o o oky stuff!!
