    Remember, “bad” is subjective. Sure, it doesn’t sound like how traditional strings do, but there are people who invent purposefully “bad” sounding instruments as a means of pushing the boundaries of their own creativity.

    • @pulykamell
      @pulykamell 2 роки тому +7

      Yeah, I think part of it is also figuring out what actually it is good at -- it seems clear that a lot of normal guitar techniques won't work as well on horse hair, but are there any tones that are interesting? It seems to me the lower strings are particularly dead, so maybe we have to try something more percussive if we're playing down there. Also, was there a lot of experimentation done to determine where the "sweet spot" of each string by gauge is? Maybe a different tuning would help bring out the strings at their best tone. Maybe even just getting rid of the low strings and playing it as a different instrument would help. Lots of various ways to experiment here. The sustain is clearly going to be deadened compared with a steel or nylon string, and the tone lacks brightness. Is there anything you can also coat them in as another possibility?

      Horses like the tall Andalusian have longer tails. It would've had a different sound with a complete strands. He could contact the Andalusian Horse club. Or, the Lippizan horse club...
      Joining strands don't allow for a solid path for vibration to follow. It would be equivalent to a bad wiring setup on an amplifier. If wires are frayed there's impedance.

    I know those strings didn’t sound great, but another thing to take into consideration is that it is a steel string acoustic guitar and the top is heavy and requires a lot of energy to drive the top, hence why they use steel strings. If you were to use nylon in a steel string, it also wouldn’t have enough energy to drive the top. Because many classical guitars once used gut strings and eventually players switched to nylon, it may be possible that the strings have enough energy to drive the top of a classical guitar. I know you said it wasn’t worth it, but if you still have the strings and didn’t cut them, maybe it’s possible to test the experiment on a classical guitar.

    No kidding, though, the motivation advice is so true. Everytime I have to practice, I have no motivation, but once I start, I get motivated and I can easily practice two hours. The hard part is just starting. 🙃

      it works for pretty much everything. I think it’s interesting how you could ”find” motivation in the most uninteresting things by doing this. I only work in 25 minute sessions because the starting part gets a lot easier I think!🤝

    You are wonderfully crazy, Mattias. My dad is a piano builder and tuner (now retired), and I play the violin, with a horse hair bow of course. I'm really amazed what time, dedication and ingenuity you put into questioning the conventions on how instruments are built, and trialling things. That's an essential quality of an engineer - always tinkering and not abiding in conventional wisdom.

    I used to own Arabian horses, and we put their tails in socks so they would grow really long for shows, I had a horse with an over 8 foot long tail. It took so much effort and care to get them to that point, I wouldn’t have sold a fraction of them for a price that would ultimately have defeated the purpose.

    Dude, I would make of every version you do, either it is the guitar with horse hair or under water Piano and so on, a virtual instrument, like you did with the hammer on paino strings. Even if some dont sound really good as a instrument alone, many producers like for hip hop and electronic muic look always for unusual sounds. It would be basically a additional income source! 👍
