- The recent revelation for me has been about my darker side. All my life, I've aimed to live by the natural principles of goodness, striving to do what's right and virtuous, following my own understanding of the world. They call it "ecological" these days, emphasizing maximum tolerance and empathy. But not too long ago, I realized something different. I came to see that while doing good for one, acting righteously, I could unintentionally cause harm and act unfairly towards another. I had to admit to myself that I'd often done wrong to those around me, all while justifying it as my quest to be better for someone else. In essence, I'm as much a mix of good and bad as anyone else, and that realization cut deep. Perhaps some folks live with the knowledge that they can do evil, but for me, it was hard to acknowledge. Even knowing that these are just words, human interpretations of the world packaged as moral principles, I struggled to accept that I'm not just good but also capable of evil. But the truth is, good and evil are human constructs.
This realization had a two-fold effect. Firstly, it made me truly grasp the concept that I had always considered fundamental: the division of the world into good and evil is subjective. In reality, there's no clear line between them. The bright side represents our conscious awareness, while the dark side delves deeper into our primal, animalistic essence. Secondly, I began to see myself as a more complete being, which piqued my interest. This transformation left its mark on my creative work. Thus, the creative project "Chiaroscuro" was born-a story about a person who perpetually teeters between the dark and light sides of their essence. It's a narrative of life in a city that forces us to choose between light and darkness. Survival there depends on embracing both paths, forever oscillating between the two.
I spent a long time pondering a title for this video. In Kabbalah, there's the concept of "Sitra Achra"-the shadow side of divine creation, a mere shadow that can't exist without light. This idea would've mirrored the darker side well. But Kabbalah has its own unique perspective on this concept, and meddling with Kabbalistic ideas is generally discouraged. So, I settled on the title "Chiaroscuro," a term firmly rooted in the world of art. You see, it's not just the physical form of a person that can be depicted with light and shadow; it's their inner essence too. Without that interplay of shadow, they'd be as flat as a canvas in the light. The shadow gives us depth and dimension.
