    This is a really good recipe even though he made it three years ago is the closest thing to Golden syrup. I love to show I miss him so much that he’s passed away. I still go back and watch some of those episodes when I can’t find the recipe I print it off. I hope they keep his videos up for a very long time.

    I used to put golden syrup on my nans scones (shes nearly 101 now. This was 15-20 years ago) she would put raisins in. We would toast the raisin scones, put butter on, then syrup. They were delicious.

    You have a knack for popping in with exactly the recipe I was looking for, Mr. Paul. I can buy Lyle’s Golden Syrup here in Oregon, but it costs the moon. I’d been planning on trying to make it myself and had looked up some recipes. Watching you go through the process gave me the missing ingredient: confidence. It’s finally on the stove now, turning into sweet gold. 🍯 Thank you again! 😊

    • @MrPaulsPantry
      @MrPaulsPantry  3 роки тому +7

      Hi Max, don't try to rush it and don't be tempted to stir it during the cooking. Also, even if it's not quite the right colour the first couple of time you make it, don't worry it will still work in all recipes calling for Golden Syrup. Do please keep me updated on the outcome.

    • @maxineetheridge6922
      @maxineetheridge6922 3 роки тому +5

      @@MrPaulsPantry It turned out beautifully, Mr. Paul! Fits perfectly in a 1-cup canning jar. Total cooking time from boiling to honey golden was about 45 minutes. My electric stove’s low must be a little bit lower than your gas stove’s low, so I had to turn it up a bit to match the degree of boiling in your video. It also registered higher on the thermometer when it had reached the color of yours. It’s cooling now. Hoping it won’t harden into solid candy! Since it’s in a canning jar, I assume that I can reheat and add some water to thin, if necessary.

      @@lindahart6049 Hi, Linda! Unfortunately, no, I’m not in the Portland area. It should be much easier to find up there. I’ve found it at the local Roth’s (although just checked and they do not have it in stock now), and have heard that Safeway, World Market, Market of Choice, and even some Walmarts carry it. World Market would be your surest bet as they have an extensive British foods section.

    Mr Paul, thank you very much for this video. I love looking at recipes and especially British ones. Golden syrup always intrigued me and over here in America, several people have said sub corn syrup...but I knew better just by looking at the ingredients. I was just on a Walmart website, looking for Golden Syrup and found I could order it there but it was ridiculously priced. So you understand why I am so happy you shared your wonderful recipe with us!!! I love all the unusual breads, pasties, sweets, foods for teas etc....have a great day, sir. Tate & Lyle's Golden Syrup (Lyle's now) is readily available here in Canada but thanks for the excellent recipe and video. It looks exactly like the real thing. During the war as children we would often have a "piece an' syrup!" (syrup sandwich!) Great on pancakes too.

      I'm in Alberta and Lyle's isn't easy to find here. Amazon Canada has it though. We used to get it at a small shop in West Ed mall but that disappeared. You'd think Superstore aka Loblaws, or London Drugs would have it, since they're both linked to Britain via the owners, but no. One of my sons worked at Superstore for 25 years and he never saw it there. You can however buy Rogers golden syrup, the same Rogers who makes the sugar we buy, and made from cane sugar so it's legitimately golden syrup even if not Lyle's.

    It hadn't even occurred to me that you could make your own golden syrup. I'm a bit of a sucker for buying the Tate and Lyle one though just so I can have one those great tins in the cupboard. I love the design of the tin as it's so traditional. I like some golden syrup on bread and also like it in porridge as well as putting it in cakes of course. My Nan was a lover of having Black Treacle on bread but I couldn't do that lol.

      Hi Sugar Puff,
      I don't if you're aware of this: The Guinness Book of Records has named Lyle's Golden Syrup the oldest brand in Britain. Its green packaging has been decorated with the image of a golden lion and bees since 1885. You obviously have good taste both for the product and the package. Thanks for watching. Have you got a really nice recipe for a good ginger cake using golden syrup and or without treacle, i have one that uses both but it’s nice but i recon you might have a better one. 70 yo Texan here and I've never seen the recommendation to substitute corn syrup for golden syrup. You can of course but it's just a different taste. Since the zeitgeist has made them manufacture corn syrup as a 100% glucose syrup (no fructose to keep market sales) it's considerably less sweet than Golden and the corn syrup of my youth. I simply make my own Golden Syrup mostly because while there are stores in my city that sell it, it is obscenely expensive for what it is. You haven't lived until you've tased a cheesecake made substituting half the sucrose with golden syrup (add an extra 30 gm of corn starch as well and cook it lower and longer to account for the extra liquid.)

    In South Africa, we also have the British brand named Lyles syrup, but it has become too expensive, and as South Africans always do ...... make a plan ...... by making our very own, and naming it Illovo golden syrup.
