Cramer was an English composer. He had music teaching carried out by Muzio Clementi, having become known in London and throughout Europe. It was appreciated by Beethoven when he traveled to Vienna. He founded an instrument building factory which he left in 1833. He composed 200 sonatas for piano, 50 other sonatas for various instruments accompanied by piano, nine concerts for piano, chamber music, etc. His music in general is less dramatic and elegant than Clementi’s, less original than Dussek’s and less romantic than Chopin’s. His music is however amazing for its moments of fantastic lyricism and delicacy. It completes us entirely by its harmony and sublime virtuosity. I didn’t know Cramer as composer but his music is fabulous and emotionally fills us in a fascinating way. The pianist is superb both in sensibility, technique and cadence he brings to the masterpiece. The orchestra and direction are fabulous. I was enchanted by the music produced by Cramer. Thanks for the fantastic recording and for the moments of real pleasure it provides.
Good evening dear virtual friend and teacher . I love so much concertos for piano. This one has a gorgeous lyrics sounds. Best regards from Chile. Chilean people are celebrating our 209th Independence day. Best wishes for you. Fernando.
Howard Shelley is very underestimated. Great pianist and conductor. Had a copy of the Moscheles Concertos #2 and 3 on the Hyperion label. Excellent disc. So is this.
Cramer was not that wrong to call himself a "latter-day Mozart". This concerto may perfectly be written by Mozart had he lived 6 years more. However its language., its melodies and a few harmonic solution are more modern than the ones of Mozart hence you need to imagine Wolfgang would have greatly evolved in those 6 years. And he certainly would have done, no doubts. You hear here and there the hand of his teacher Clementi and some features of his contemporaries of the great season that brought classicism hand in hand to romantic era. Needless to say I prefer this concerto to the contemporary Beethoven's #1 & 2. Beethoven had to still unleash his ingenuity and titanic power in 1797.
Thank you, Pietro Landri, your comments always delight me: there are not many people who know how to combine sincerity with humor in comments about classical music and about composers. Thank you again!
Ich mag die Werke von Cramer sehr. Ich freue mich sehr, seine Werke hier hören zu können. Vielen Dank.
Thank you too!
Un Allegro volontaire, affirmé, soutenu, presque martial...Du caractère ce compositeur !.. 🎶🎹🎶
