    I’M THE FREEZE DRYING MAMA!
    I’m Bonnie and by day I work as a full time, USA Today Best-Selling Author with multiple pen names while homeschooling my 6 beautiful children, as well as running three other companies from my home. By night, I freeze dry everything I can get my hands on. I won’t say I’ve gone so far as to take the food off my kids’ plates, but I won’t say I haven’t either.
    Research for one of my pen names that specializes in apocalyptic thriller fiction as well as other survivor fiction led me to an obsession in prepping. But I don’t want to pack away 52 tons of raw wheat. I want to go into the End of the World with Spaghetti O’s and ice cream sandwiches. With my freeze dryer, now, I can.
    You’ll find tips and tricks for Freeze Drying your foods whether you’re looking to bolster your food storage, prep for a camp out, pack lighter snacks for a hike, or just come up with different ways to save your leftovers.
    I’m also a huge keto eater. I’ve been eating the keto lifestyle for over a year now and most of my food storage has been centered around incorporating keto friendly foods. Surprisingly, this can be a lot of things. Click on the keto category under Foods and Recipes and you’ll find plenty of recipes and foods that you can freeze dry for your keto lifestyle - snacks, long term, or just a way to save room in your fridge. If you’re not interested in keto, but you’d like to eat all the foods, try anything we’ve got listed over in the foods and recipes section. One of my favorites and easiest is the raw egg powder!
    One of my favorite things, is hearing from other Freeze Dryers. Don’t hesitate to join me at / freezedryingmama and let’s get real about Freeze Drying and how it can help our families.

    I just got my FD last week and I needed this video. Perfect timing, thank you. I an unsure what to do with the food after processing. Could you show your storage area and methods in an upcoming video? That would be very helpful

    I hope you show how you are doing everything. I need to do more food storage and want to expand. There are some things that I am not sure if they will freeze dry well or not.

    Oh wow. You live in Missouri. Hello from STL. I just finished freeze drying a 5LB bag of russet potatoes (sliced into fries). Amazing how a 5LB bag can turn into a lightweight styrfoam bag of potatoes, light enough to toss up in the air.
    Last month or so, I've been working daily on 2 freezers full of Trader Joe's blueberries and have been freeze drying bananas too (every couple days/when ripened), so I can have a year supply for my smoothies. It's a lot of work, but worth it. I should be done by mid summer.

      That is amazing! I love how FDing things can help us save so much money too. I bought a bunch of cabbage on sale and it's in the freeze dryer to help keep it longer. I LOVE bananas too. You're doing so great. Thanks for letting me know how you're doing. I LOVE that.

      @@FreezeDryingMama Yes, absolutely. I got the blueberries before inflation prices. I mostly look for sales as well, then add to my stockpile then. Too bad we can't freeze dry water, lol....

    I'm not alone! 🤣 We also have two freezers, both are so full, my husband gets annoyed. I'm ready, we are not going to starve when SHTF LOL! We finally got our new Harvest Right set up, in fact I've been waiting all dang day for the bread run to finish so I can freeze dry the good stuff. Love your videos, they are full of great information. :)

    Just found your channel and really enjoyed this. We ordered our freeze dryer about 2 1/2 weeks ago and are waiting.....not patiently... :) Thank you for sharing because we didn't even consider freeze drying frozen vegetables. Love this!! I really liked that you told us who was behind the camera, Go Taylor!!!

      Thank you so much! Yeah, she does such a good job. Frozen veggies and fruits are terrific and are perfect for when you don't have time for prep. Just toss them on the trays and go. I'm so excited for your new machine. Let me know when you get it!! Thanks!

    Just purchased one. I would like to FD breakfast, lunch & dinner, or multiple items like an MRE, and seal them in a single Mylar bag. What are your thoughts on packaging? I would like to use as little packaging as possible ie; O2 absorbers, Mylar bags, etc. I’m also concerned about using plastic for long term storage. Do you think that is something to be concerned about? Thank you for your time and consideration.

      Hi Michael Anthony, If you're going to be doing multiple items in your bags or mason jars, you'll want to make sure they're all FD at the same time and the same level of prepared - are they all raw, cooked, etc. For instance, I like to store a bunch of items to make omelets with, but the egg powder and all the veggies are all raw/fresh/frozen when I put them in the FD. I package them that way so I can dump water in the bag, let it sit a minute or two then dump it in the pan. I like ease of use as well. I don't have any problems with using the Mylar because I keep my FS items out of the heat and sun. As long as you're doing that, you should be fine.

    I just set mine up but I had trouble with the first time. I had fruit that we had frozen and it had melted and then globed together. I let it thaw and then tried to freeze dry it but it would not vacuum

      yikes!!! I'm dealing with a vacuum issue right now too. I think there's something wrong with the gasket. Let me know if you got yours fixed!

    Just filtered my oil for the first time and its still got a golden color to it after running through the filter. Is this normal? Can i reuse it?

    • @FreezeDryingMama
      @FreezeDryingMama  2 роки тому +1

      That is normal. You can reuse your oil, but watch the viscous point. Those small engines run the oil through high heat and wear and tear. You don't want to wear down the viscosity of the oil and potentially damage the pump.

    I just got my FD last week and I needed this video. Thank you. I am unsure where to put all my freeze dried goods once done with the cycles. Could you show your storage areas and methods in a coming vid?

      I do have a storage video on how I label and organize. But as far as where and how to store, I'm afraid I'm a hot mess. I keep bins under beds, in closets, under the boat. I keep them in the garage, downstairs, on top of the fridge, and anywhere else I can cram it in. My husband wishes I was more organized, but... Thanks for the visit!

    Glad you're back at it Bonnie! I've been hesitant to do more solid meats too. Ground meats, absolutely. Shredded meats, you betcha. Steak... hold up. That is an expensive experiment, especially if it goes wrong. And hubby and son will probably be grumpy if it doesn't turn out like a fresh off the grill steak. I have freezer envy too, so you aren't alone! I could only buy 1/8th of a cow because that was all we had space for. But we're going in with friends on raising meat chickens, so I have exactly 8 weeks to make room in the freezers. I have a tendency to procrastinate to the 11th hour, and that is NOT something you can do with freeze drying! LOL This was just the kick in the pants I needed. Thanks, girl!

    • @FreezeDryingMama
      @FreezeDryingMama  2 роки тому

      Hi Karen! Oh my goodness! You sound like me. We went in with some friends as well on meat chickens. HOLY COW. I did NOT have space in my freeze drier. My FD started getting the dreaded vacuum error the day after I posted this video, that's why no videos for a while. It was awful! So I had to somehow make space for 46 chickens (processed, thank goodness) without my freeze dryer. I had to can some of the meat which was great, but daaaaannnngggg. We did it. I tried talking my husband into another freezer but we're tight on space until he's able to get things organized better in the garage, etc. So, yes, you and I are in similar predicaments. I definitely recommend canning some of your chicken when you get there. It's AWESOME. Let me know how it goes!
