    The real question to me is whether the aliens who built the “Casino Royale” rigged the dice because it was specifically mentioned in the book, because they managed to infer it from the fact that it was a probably-shady casino in the given time period, or because they initially made the dice fair but the “humans” inside were sufficiently intelligent and autonomous that at some point they rigged them themselves.

    • @pronkb000
      @pronkb000 2 роки тому +8

      Or, the dice are actually fair...which is "improperly balanced" from Data and Riker and Worf's perspective. Data "fixes" them to get the results they need to win enough to buy the casino.

    • @davidsotomayor8713
      @davidsotomayor8713 2 роки тому +5

      Maybe the aliens just had poor QC or wide tolerance margins in their dice factory.

      All dice are improperly balanced, unless the dots are painted on rather than dimples, even then still technically not balanced

    A supercomputer like data would be able to calculate the exact force required to roll the dice in a certain way that they would land on a desired number.

    • @Althalus2010
      @Althalus2010 7 років тому +26

      That's exactly what he's doing at the end.

      Doesn't look like he knows their starting position, though.

    • @AlFredo-sx2yy
      @AlFredo-sx2yy 4 роки тому +5

      from my point of view, if you look at the way he's doing it in the begining, he makes the 2 throws calculating their final resting position, but he had into account dice that were properly balanced. These dice, as they are part of the casino, are obviously rigged, which is why they were not balanced. After the second attempt, you can see he realises it wasnt possible for his calculations to be wrong, and so he begins making the throws in a different way. Now, we don't really know what happens there, but from what i can tell, there are 2 posible explanations:
      1) Data is making the throws calculating with the different centers of mass. When he closes the hand is just to reposition the dice in a certain way without making it obvious that he was trying to rig the throw.
      2) Crushing the dice is somehow making them rearrange the center of mass to the faces the wants them to, so that the dice will always face the number he wants. How does he do that? We dont really know, but he was asked if he could "fix them" which i interpret as changing them in some way. So maybe, he is somehow applying a crushing force that is making the weight that was added inside of the dice to rig them move to a different location in his advantage.
      I have heard number 2 a lot being said from people, but i personally believe option 1 is by far much more credible.

      @@AlFredo-sx2yy
      The reason why #2 is the go-to is because we see Data squeeze the dice multiple times in a controlled fashion. However, we only see this before the third throw, so it's more likely he brings the dice back into balance (unloading them, rather than loading them in his favor), and then falls back to calculated throws like he started with.

    • @AlFredo-sx2yy
      @AlFredo-sx2yy 3 роки тому +2

      @@VestedUTuber i dunno, i believe the most logical and possible explanation might be that data just recalculated the new center of mass of the dice. But we do see him crushing the dice and we know he can bend metal bars so i guess that he bring the dice back into balance before making the new throws.

      That’s the idea. The conceit of the episode is that they’re in a world created by aliens based on a sleazy pulp novel set in Vegas; the plot involving the man and the woman is that they’re having an affair while plotting to steal from and then murder her husband.

      Everything in the casino runs by the rules of the original story. They’re (accidentally) playing the part of side characters who aren’t written to have been kicked out, so they’re not.
      Of course in a real world casino, even just winning that much would make you liable to be removed whether you were using trick dice or not. With your winnings, but very much without permission to come back.
