It's the silver film and shitty, uncorrected lens that adds a little blur and flavor. Notice no one is holding a phone. They had their hands empty. In pockets. They were still making landline phone-calls and reading papers. Passing around mix-tapes. Graffiti was a new thing. Chewing gum had sugar and sticker around it.
