Thank you. My daughter has been having cooling issues for several years. It would overheat and boil over whenever she was stuck in traffic and had to drive slowly. She could never hear the cooling fan come on. Your test of simply disconnecting the temperature sensor and having the cooling fan come on was an epiphany. --- If the fan comes on, it's the sensor. If it stays off, It's likely the fan or relay.
    It was the $12 sensor.

Thanks Richpin, your videos have saved me much grief owning two Saturns (SL2, SW2). You are right to suspect the sensor (themistor) and connector. My fan in the SL2 would not come on until the temp gauge was past 3/4 scale. Replaced the sensor and the fan comes on just a needle-width of half scale now. My Bluetooth OBD2 module to tablet shows temp is 100C at halftemp gauge scale, fan comes on at 105C now. One third scale normal temp needle position shows 88degC. New sensor measured 2.13Kohms at my room temp, old sensor measured 2.5K ohms at room temp (17 percent difference). Sensor ohms decrease with increasing temperature, so the old sensor could not get low enough in ohms to tell the EMC to turn the fan on, even though the gauge would read close to normal 1/3 scale most of the time. Just like a resistor in an old tube radio, these thermistors age and go out of tolerance over time. Open circuit test must be a default "fan on" condition for the EMC logic. I gave both the coolant sensor and air inlet sensor connectors a shot of DeOxIt D5 contact cleaner, although both looked OK visually. I did pickup a new connector. Turns out I did not need it in the vehicle, but necessary for bench testing. A 2-pin PC header connector may fit the sensor pins, I'm guessing .080 spacing...
Hopefully this info may help others with coolant sensor and fan issues. The other post about checking overflow cap good advice as well...
    Thanks again....

Edit from My previous reply. Did the test, no fan. Have voltage at the plug. Went to the yard this morning, got a cooling fan for $20. Plug it in on my valve cover to see if it came on. Nothing. Well, it might help if the plug was in all the way. Fixed that problem, started it up again, Yee, Haw ! We have a cooling fan ! Bad move putting it on the valve cover to test it. It almost took off but the connector kept it on the cover. Lol. Anyway, perfect diagnosis doctor ! Hopefully that's why the A/C compressor kept kicking on and off every 15 seconds or so, because it wasn't detecting a cooling fan. My gauges showed the system was full. Hopefully that's the fix as well and will save me from having to replace the compressor and the hassle .

you just saved me a lot of money! side note, weird issue I still have is the radiator fan only turns on when I have the A/C button on with the fan setting at any level except off. I thought using the AC was usually something that adds heat, but weirdly my radiator fan will kick right on when I turn on the AC only, I also tested it with the temp sensor unplugged and the AC button off, and it would not turn on. Then with or without the temp-sensor plugged in, it would only turn on once I turned on the AC.
Im wondering if anyone knows if saturns have some kind of bypass where the AC motor automatically turns on the radiator fan, it would make sense since the AC draws heat and the radiator fan might naturally engage with AC on? Any thoughts? I am pretty sure my temp sensor is bad, but even with it unplugged the AC engages the radiator fan.

    NOTE:
My 1995 SL2 has 2 Temp Sensors by each other! Evidently this changed to 1 sensor on newer models.
The top sensor(SU1131VC) is for the dash gauge reading and the bottom sensor(WTC1231) is for the Computer/Cooling fan to come on temp.
Our problem was the cooling fan not coming on and the radiator overheated at McDonald's.
Luckily it doesn't seem to have damaged the engine as we stopped right away.
Disconnecting the lower fan sensor(open circuit) does not trigger the fan to come so a jumper wire placed inside the disconnected connector's 2 holes(close circuit) probably would.
Needle nose pliers were needed to squeeze the connector to remove.
Be ready with the new sensor before removing the old one because some coolant does leak out.
We wrapped the sensor threads with a few wraps of teflon tape since it did not come with a paste. Use a 13mm deep socket. Don't over tight, these sensor metal cases are wimpy.
We just put a new sensor in and idled the car till the temp gauge was a bit over half and the fan finally came on as it should now.
We had previously disconnected the fan plug and hard wired from the battery to the fan motor to make sure the fan was still good and it was.
The 2 sensors look almost exactly the same but the plug grooves on the sensor is a male like bump for the bottom sensor where for the top sensor it is like a female 2 grooves together.
The probe part of the sensor that goes in the block is like a brass where the Oem were like a plastic.
The old one was the Oem with 130,000 miles on it.
    Take care

Rich, unfortunately I ended up braking the connector from the sensor attempting to test this on my 97 SL2. The fan came on but I am unable to reconnect it to the cooling temp sensor. Go to the junk yard and get a coolant reservoir cap from another Saturn, 15 psi written on the cap. I had some baffling problems with the cooling system, turns out it was the reservoir cap. If the cap doesn't hold to the right pressure anymore the boiling point of the coolant will decrease. It will boil over before your cooling fan ever comes on and you will think your car is running hot because you will smell the hot coolant escaping out the lid. Then the engine will overheat when enough coolant escapes. The boiling point of a liquid goes up under pressure so when the lid fails the coolant will boil at a cooler temp, like I said, before the cooling fan even comes on, once it boils it is gonna have to escape and it will probably come out of the reservoir cap. I troubleshot the whole cooling system with its electronics. Then I went to the junk yard to grab a few temp sensors and its connectors. I threw a radiator cap in my pocket just for the hell of it. I put the new lid on and turned the connector to the temp sensor 180 degrees and reconnected it. I waited for the engine to heat up with anticipation and a prayer. When it started to rise to the point it would normally boil and come out the lid it didn't, and when I smelled the engine it didn't smell that hot. At about 9/16 to 5/8 on the temp gauge to my joy the fan came on. The temp dropped to normal in mere seconds, victory. I thought at first turning the connector on the temp sensor had done it but then as I thought about it I figured it didn't matter which way you connect the connector. Long story short if your lid is not holding to the 15 psi written on the lid you will see these symptoms: the temp gauge will rise above the normal operating temperature, when it reaches half way it is close to boiling already because the lid is not holding the pressure required to raise the boiling point, the temp may drop back down temporarily a few times if you are starting and stopping, it will go up when you stop and down when you go. But if you stop long enough or park the car the car will begin to heat up, the temp will go just past half way and the coolant will start escaping the lid. The temp will jump around pretty good as pressure is released and then builds and so on. So obviously you are losing coolant in the process so your coolant will be going lower. You will wonder why your fan never came on when your car was apparently overheating even though the temp only made it a little past half way. You will wonder if maybe the gauge is wrong, maybe the temp is hotter than it says. So really the car is not overheating, of course you smell the boiling coolant escaping the lid and pouring on the ground but that is because it has boiled at the lower temp due to the failure of the lid. So get a new lid.

But the fan still does not come on when the car gets hot, in the way it is normally set up to. I have to connect the fan directly to the battery, to have it running when the car is in use. Hi Rich, nicely shot video. Question: if you remove the CTS connector to turn-on the fan, then how can a dirty/corroded CTS connector prevent the electric fan from turning on? It seams that removing the connector from the CTS causes an open the circuit and isn't that what a corroded CTS connector would do?

    • @RichpinTv

What would you suspect is the culprit is just the opposite was happening. In that, as soon as one starts the car, the radiator fan comes on immediately, even in winter and the engine totally cold. Would the coolant temp sensor be the chief suspect? Also, would you expect any current to be detectable at the connector if the engine was cold and the engine not running? I would appreciate you insight on this. Thanks Ron

I would take a close look at the coolant temp sensor.

New water pump, thermostat, temperature sensor and cleaned the corroded sensor connector. The temperature gauge now seems accurate and the temp warning light no longer is on. The problem is the cooling fan runs when the climate control fan is all the way down, but engages when a higher fan speed is selected. Even at cold start up.

So this might be unique for me, but if everyone else replaced all their parts and still have issues, check your battery's terminal bolts in the trunk. Mine was stripped some time ago and someone decided not to tell me so i've been busy chasing this problem not realizing that all it was, was an electrical/grounding issue. Yikes.

So Rich, Question,,, what if any would be the adverse affect to just leaving the CTS unplugged, the fan would only run while the engine is running right!??
( 96 SL2 DOHC) I did all the tricks,, used the AC button, till I couldn't keep freon in it anymore,, hot wired the fan,, but did no good in the winter time! Kept me in warm up mode! So ended up, running a 30 amp toggle up next to my console, wired through a 30/40 amp relay, back down to the fuse box and to the fan! So now I have more control over, cooling the engine down, and it not continually running burning my gas up!!!
Only thing is,, I don't recommend this for everyone!! I pay way more attention to my gauges than the average person,, so ....
Plus I know my driving ,, and usually don't need it on the highway,, anyway.. mainly in town>> Good Luck!!

On your 96 i think the coolant temp sensor is very important because the computer needs to know the engine temp to get the fuel deliver correct.

My 04 Saturn ion overheats when idle for too long, or stuck in slow moving traffic. It cools back off when I get to about 3rd gear (between 30 &40 mph). I've checked all the fuses, relay, flushed the radiator hose.. Basically beginner chick fixes. I don't know what I need to do next to figure out what the problem is. What should I do? What should I check? And can you please be extremely descriptive, I'm trying to learn how to do these things and need help. Please help me learn how to fix my car.

When the engine is overheating does the cooling fan come on.

I'm going to be 100%honest with you.. I'm behind the wheel in traffic and I can't tell if it runs or not. When I flushed everything and changed all the fluids, filters, fuses, relays etc. I cranked the car and turned on the air; the fan didn't immediately turn on so I gave it a little push and it started running. When I turned the car off the fan sounded and looked like it wobbled as it stopped.

quick question rich my fan on my pickup is always running. I had a cooling system that was undercooling. I changed the thermostat and now the temp gauge goes up, but fan is always running even after trucks been off for 8 plus hours. I was thinking of changing the cooling temp sensor, and giving the cooling system a flush. I'm guessing a good sensor unplugged like you said would turn your fan on, so a bad sensor would keep it on.

    • @danielmelvin4525

or maybe I need to get in there and give it a push and make sure it's making a connection

A possible better way would be to use a 21 watt 12v bulb instead of a multimeter, some voltages dont actually have any current capacity, a load is needed, and its really visual :-).
Do you know if the sensor is like the old type that just switches on at a threshold temprature or is it a fancy pants variable resistance thermister?
    Im just being nosey :-D

In my 02' Saturn sl the coolant fan seems to only come on when the A/C is on. if I disconnect the electrical connector at the ECTS the fan comes on as well. I replaced the ECTS, and it still does not come on. The temp gauge at the middle or slightly over and the fan still isn't coming on. Is that normal?

First time: he said it was the reservoir so he changed it out, I kept having the same problem I took it back he told me it was the fuse, this last time he stated it was the it was the thermostat. I've spent so much money paying this mechanic. N it's still doing the same thing. I need help.

if that cooling sencor is bad will it prevent my A/C from coming on also ?????????

    • @jrake80
      @jrake80 6 років тому +1

Raymond J no, ac works if the fan is coming on or not. However turning ac on should kick the fan on automatically. The ac switch is an on switch for a working fan. It does that because it takes more power and creates more heat running the engine with the ac on. Now if you can doesnt come on unplugging the ect then you've probably got a bad fan motor so get one at the jumkyard

Here's a tricky one for you, I have a 97 SW2 that if you unplug the sensor the fan comes and when you test the power and ground it test good and when you also ohm out the sensor it's good so I replaced the sensor just because I had removed it and the fan still doesn't come on and it over heats any ideas? Oh and great videos very informative thank you
