TraENT - I hope you use the new buds to listen to Millionaire Waltz again to pick up that AMAZING bass. The first part of the song was all just piano and a wonderful intricate lesson in how to play bass. I often listen to the intro over and over...eargasmic! Long live Deakie!!!!!
It's one of the best tunes I've ever heard for the bass rhythm, deacy seems to come up with memorable bass lines, but this was something else 👍👍
The harmonies are usually always Roger and Brian (John doesn’t have much of a singing voice lol) and Roger has an incredible falsetto! Brian was quite good at the lower parts as well!
@@gaztl1000s It really stands out because I'm not sure if any other bands of that era, or this era for that matter, have done a bass line that's so inspired by classical music, which is kind of a broad term. Most people use "Classical" as sort of a catch-all term for everything pre-twentieth century. The waltz aspect of this sort is kind of Romantic era music, a little later on than the Classical era. And the awesome bass at the beginning isn't really there to keep beat, but its playing it's own melody like a counterpoint to the piano. It's own distinct tune but complementing the piano melody like a back and forth conversation. That sort of thing is very Boroque influenced, which was right before Classical, like the time of Bach. They must've really had a thorough knowledge of all the different styles in music history and how to couple them together *and* add a dose of modern rock into it as well. They take the sort of melody line that wouldve been played by a violin a century ago and substitute an electric guitar and it works so well. And it's more impressive that he's picking it out on a guitar compared to a violin with a bow. The dexterity in that is pretty impressive. Same thing with the bass. I dont think many other rock bassists play such intricate riffs with that level of ease, if their music gives them no reason to. These guys were all upping their standards, writing music that really challenged their abilities, and their creativity. It's not just that Freddie was an amazing singer, but Queen was an amazing collaboration between a group of brilliant individuals, and that also doesnt come along very often.
Having only one ear piece in you miss half of the melody because of how they multi tracked, you'll hear John playing a beautiful melody on the bass with both in 👍👍👍

Freddie, Brian and Rodger always do the Layered Vocals ..In Bohemian Rhapsody Freddie layered a majority of them himself. The song Millionaire Waltz is just what the title suggests (It Is A Rock song written in the form of a Classical Waltz )
This song is Freddie's. It screams "I'm a Freddie song" actually :P

One of my all time favorites. One of Queen's greatest strengths are their diversity. This song is just another example of a rock band doing non rock band things and making it sound amazing.
Usually songs that have that classical feel to it were written by Freddie, about the harmonies, in most of their songs the harmonies are sung by Freddie, Brian and Roger (Roger for example has a really high raspy voice so it's easy to tell his voice apart from the others)

Yesssss, finally! Thanks for taking up our suggestion man, glad you enjoyed it as much as we did! Definitely one of their best imo. And yeah, this is absolutely a Freddie song. The sheer complexity and over the top-ness of the melody and lyrics is a clear indicator of that.
That bass/piano intro is absolutely delicious.

The harmonies are usually provided by Freddie, Brian and Roger...who has an amazing high pitch falsetto...and an awesome gravelly vocal to boot!

One of my favourite Queen songs. I love Freddies, Brian’s and Rogers harmonies in this so much. Brian’s Red Special sounds like an orchestra in its own right a lot of the time. The big crescendo at the end with Rogers drum fills is one of my favourite parts. I never get sick of hearing it.

Millionaire Waltz is kind of like the major key, uplifting counterpart of Bohemian Rhapsody. They both start with a simple theme, Freddie and the piano, goes on a similar journey of shifting into different parts that sound more classical/operatic, then more rock, going in interesting directions, unexpected instrumentation. And finally coming full circle back to the theme they started with, but with more harmonizing and instruments added. Then Freddie and the piano alone again at the end.
But where BR ends on a more tragic, "nothing really matters much to me" mood, Millionaire Waltz ends triumphantly, hopefully: spring in the air, music and love everywhere, and Freddie contented and feeling like a millionaire.
Dont know if it was conciously planned like that, but the songs seem like mirror images of each other...

If there ever was a song you need to hear in stereo it's this. If you were listening to it with only the right channel you missed alot.
I would call this music progressive? And unique.

merqury5 prog meets British dance hall. Queen definitely was touched by prog. Their style defies categorization.

Yeah, 3/4 time doesnt automatically equal waltz. The stress on the first note, like *oom* pa-pa gives it that waltz rhythm.
In some sections it has a smoother 3/4 time, like "once we were mad, we were happy", and "my fine friend.." which is like 1 note held out for three beats in the first few measures. It even has the switch up that sounds more rocking "Come back to me, how I long for your love" part that briefly switches to 4/4 time. But he really nails the waltz time with the piano playing at the beginning, and the part in the middle with the guitars harmonizing together. 3 quarter notes per measure, stress on the first. I'd say it earns it's title very well😀

Really great reaction. With Queen you need to keep playing even though it seems like the song is over. Unfortunately, you missed some of it. You have an excellent ear any notice so many nuances that others miss. Bravo to you!
TraENT, one reason there is a debate over Queen '70s versus Queen '80s. In the '70s their music was Ornate, loaded with multi-track and impossible to replicate at Live Shows. But that is where my heart lies. I struggle to think of anything from their '70s catalog that I don't like.
lusmas99 - Amazingly, often their live versions were as good as or better than the studio versions. When I saw them live I was amazed how their intricate musicianship and harmonies stood up in concert.

Dang. Was going to watch and then saw you did it with one earbud in. That’s like not even listening to the song. Or listening to a bad cover of it. The vocals and FANTASTIC bass line were on separate tracks and this song, more than most, completely separates them when you use earbuds or headphones. Sad. Please, use both next time. 😕

You missed John's beautiful genius intro and his intricate bass work! Please go back and listen again, it will give you new appreciation for it!
If you want to hear Brian's and Roger's voices in isolation listen to Queen, no on but you and then you'll be able to pick them out.

In most parts of most songs all three sing but according to Wiki and other sources Freddy does all the vocals in some songs and I guess in this song all Three sing in parts and it is just Freddy in smaller parts.
It's to the tune of a waltz, like for dancing! So yes, definitely classical. I love how you replay the harmonies!
