The characters are 15-16, so yes all the sexualization is just as creepy as it seems. Velma literally uses dude because he's like the one character who drives. Also pretty sure the showrunners did directly state they was 15ish.

Velma comes across as a mean spirited version of the 90s animated series Daria, without the better writing, characters, and social commentary that made the show good. At least in that show, Daria has flaws and she works on them, even if it means getting out of her comfort zone. Velma portrays herself as the ultimate "Mary Sue" and any criticism is marked as someone being called any word that end in "ist".

Comparing this tГa$h to DARIA, is a real insult to the source material. I know you are making the comparison because of the caustic atmosphere, but it was in the
      series as a clever background.
However, going forward, Daria having low self esteem, COMPARED to Velma's SELF LOATHING, is light years apart as writing goes. Even when miss Morgendorffer tries to look less like herself, there is no sexualizing or exposition. Daria has a really edgy personality, but her calm demeanor is a total contrast to Velma's hysterical vitriol. Even her dating was more realistic, well constructed, provided comentary, instead of using the FOURTH WALL TO TRY AND BE CLEVER.
Comparing this gargh-ßa9e to Steven Ughniverse, High GuArghdian Spice, Legend of Korrargh, She-rArgh remake, or any of that stomach juice they serve as "adult animation" these days, might be a better choice, placed beside Velma. That sort of stuff will never be sullied enough.
Daria has stood the test of time really well, let's not put it side by side with Velma. Daria would beat Velma to the curb, but also get sprinkled top to bottom with all those sewer juices coming from Velma, just by standing in contrast.
That aside, your take was fully on point.

Remember in episode 1 or 2, when kids were insulting Velma for changing her looks and he came up to her defence? He grabbed a thrown collapsible chair and yeeted it to the wall with enough force that, AFTER IT BOUNCED, it cleaved clean through someone's leg -the STRONGEST bone in their body.
Excuse me but... WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL?!
We're talking a PREBUBESCENT CHILD. He doesn't have the hormones that grow muscles. Yet he has INHUMAN strength. He competes on equal terms with jocks of his age. When he goes through puberty, he's going to be a BEAST.

    • @taragnor
      @taragnor Рік тому +2

lol, no it isn't about woke being bad. You can design plenty of good woke stuff if the writers are talented. The X-Men comics were very woke for their time, essentially having a ton of parallels to the civil rights movement. Star Trek ever since it's creation was very woke. People will watch and love woke if it's well-written. And honestly the same goes for any theme. You can push monarchy and dictatorship over democracy if you frame it right, and if you've written it well, the audience will be cheering for the heroic dictator trying to save his misguided people from themselves. Good writers can do a story about almost anything, and you'll probably like it.
But these shows are written by utterly talentless hacks who couldn't push a narrative if it slapped them in the face. They fail at pushing their own message, often even contradicting the themes they're going for. I'm convinced you could give these writers the most softball theme like "America versus terrorists" and they'd have you rooting for ISIS in the first 5 minutes. They're just that terrible.

Velma as a show COULD HAVE WORKED. (Calm down and hear me out). A mean spirited origin story like this could ONLY work if you had a new character. Imagine This character being Velma's cousin or something. This cousin is an outsider looking in on the Scooby Gang and has a very warped view of the group. That would actually makes sense in what we are seeing in Velma. I would even go as far as this Velma's Cousin character could be a life long Villain that no one knew was pulling all the strings for so many years since this person hates this group of kids so much.

I personally love those bad shows types, this and high guardian spice, they both weirdly create communities around hating them, and on their own, they pretty much turn into weird public universities of what not to do in an animation.
I can only thank them for doing things bad enough that they are worth learning about as an animator.
Also, the fact such shows have such a massive budget and high leveled talents behind them, it both serve as catharsis that big things can utterly fail, and that as a tiny youtube animator, I can fail less badly.
I would be happy to have more of those bad shows, just for the sake of learning from them about mistakes, target audience, the power of anger and how communities are formed around horrid things.

I was going to write a comment about how it's easy to see when something is created out of spite, but instead I'm going to borrow this quote from an episode of Dr Who.
    ***SPOILER ALERT***
At the end of the episode "Vincent and the Doctor", a museum curator is asked by the doctor to describe Van Gogh in about a hundred words. Here's an excerpt from that short speech:
"He [Vincent Van Gogh] transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to portray, but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world, no one had ever done it before. Perhaps no one ever will again."
While the quote is from a TV series, it highlights how it's one thing to produce something out of spite, but entirely another to produce something out of love, let alone when the artist is genuinely suffering from things like depression. Vincent Van Gogh, despite all his suffering, produced many works of art that are labors of passion and love that, eons later, are still widely celebrated. The same thing can be said for great music (J.S Bach for example) and of course great films and TV series. Scooby-Doo is still widely beloved more than 50 years later because the original series was a labor of love. Velma, and quite frankly most media today, are cynical and spiteful, and chances are will be reduced down to a footnote in media history.

Especially after everything I heard about _TLOU 2_ . I've pretty much given up on Western 'entertainment,' except maybe for Sony's _Spider-Man_ . And I might not particularly have strong positive feelings for that if _Across the Spider-Verse_ makes Jessica Drew websling while pregnant, like the comics did: there's nothing more dangerously irresponsible you can do than drag your unborn child into situations where you _know_ they'll be kit by any weapon or power.
