You know what sucks? What you said is right. This could be a solid adult themed Scooby Doo. This mystery conspiracy about all these girls being murdered could easily be adapted with just the regular Mystery crew. I would keep Scooby-Doo and have him talk and just make that normal because whatever? If we take Scooby as normal we can stretch that creative brain a bit. I would keep the gang not friends except maybe Shaggy and Freddy being friends when they were younger and slowly drifted apart. I'd keep Velma's missing Mom and that is what made her kinda standoffish and a person who is into gathering and deciphering clues. Fred is captain of many sports team which is why he is a great leader and strategist. I would have Daphne be one of the girls who gets caught which is a Easter egg to her being a bit of a damsel but swerve and have her save herself before the gang comes to demonstrate how resourceful she is. Shaggy accidentally gets involved and is reluctant to stick around but stays because he genuinely wants to help out. After awhile you see them all hang out not because of wanting to stop the murders but because they're becoming friends. Velma slowly opens up and the gang finds her Mom not alive but what happen to her. Now the Mystery is personal and Fred discovers that his family is somehow connected. Daphne finds out so is hers and Shaggy as well. This obviously causes tension and the gang split. But in the end all find separate parts to the whole mystery ( again a nod to the original and legitimate reason they split up) afterwards they catch the baddies and uncover the secrets for the murders. BOOM a somewhat grim Scooby-Doo could work if you put in the effort?

I agree. Altho I wouldve made Scooby-Doo into a service dog for Norville. Like say he has anxiety or something and his parents got him Scooby to help him. that wouldve been a good way to add Scooby-Doo in without making him a talking dog.
Also I would make Norville and Fred have a slow burn romance type thing (I just really want Fred and shaggy to get together....) Like over time Norville loses his crush on Velma after hanging out with Fred a lot. That would've been cute.
Edit: also Norville could teach Fred to be a better person.

Honestly, even having Fred’s Mom as the killer could work, but they needed to build to that. I was just thinking of a way they could have made that so interesting with a concept of - “Fred’s Mom was wanting to put her brain into Fred, but needed to make sure the method worked and that she had good control over the person who was gonna do the switch. So then you could have done Dia Dinkley as “the villain” with the reveal that she was hypnotized to be the one doing the surgeries and claiming to be Edna Perdue.”
I’d also add in that it would have been more interesting to change the purpose of the General’s plan too - like perhaps it was meant as a way to get control over foreign companies and businesses that went against his organization or the Government. Which could lead into a bigger mystery - What is his “organization” or the Government planning that they needed to do a plan like this to handle any detractors?
Also a more interesting idea too would be that they actually kidnap boys and girls. They implant the girl’s brains into the boys, hypnotize them to keep quiet and be a bit more boyish while they think they are “liberating the girls” from their limitations, although it would be revealed they actually aren’t, just messing with their minds or something.
Basically the reason why they “killed” the girls and stole their brains was to test the method and made sure they got it right. Because Fred’s mom wouldn’t want to risk getting it wrong. They’d put the brain of her “failure of a son” (as she’d put it, but really she just wants to be immortal and had Fred in part to pull this plan off) in the body of some girl (maybe one they didn’t get rid of) so Fred wouldn’t need to have any responsibilities according to her. That or just would have intended to get rid of his brain.
As for hints to it, the hint of “Perdue’s lab in Fred’s basement” still works, but you could also maybe add more about the general and that he had a kid… someone who abandoned him when the General was shamed and lost his position of power. It’d later be revealed that was his daughter, narrowing the pool more of who it could be. You can also add in that Fred’s mother has a negative reaction to even hearing about her father, who she refuses to acknowledge any connection to and sees him as a failure that couldn’t keep the power that he had. Probably believing that it was merely because “he was a man” that he got the position of power he had, and his failure was because managed to be stupid enough to not hold onto his power. But her schemes will work and she’ll use the “power men have right”.
All of the characters would have to be heavily rewritten.

I don’t want to repeat my bias thought, but episode 3 TOTALLY broke my patience for me! Because, I’ve expected Daphne and Velma to just STICK with the pummels and near-death physical blows to the body and face, instead of “subverting our expectations” with a lame show-don’t-tell exposure moment, which I find very inappropriate, which ends with a pussy kick! Just, why?

One of the more thought out reviews on this platform. It is much appreciated and I like your avatar. I had a lot of the same analysis points you had that a lot of people seem to miss for some reason and I thought I was going crazy.
I’ve been reading some fanfics to see if anyone can improve the writing. It seems that having Norville as the lead and having Velma as a side character makes it more tolerable. And some of them focus on the therapy aspect of Norvilles character they bring up in ep 3. It’s an interesting excuse to bring the other two together in in the gang since they definitely all need counseling.
I’m trying to write a scene right now where Fred is trying to cope with his mom being gone by searching for Dr. Purdues ghost in Velma’s house. And Velma at first tries to stop him then starts playing along after she starts empathizing with their shared fear of their mothers not loving them. The problem is it’s hard to write Velma not too out of character from the show because it feels miserable to write a completely awful person.
The Scoobi project ghosts coming back to haunt them would be a cool idea, (although I’m not sure how you defeat ghosts.) And it isn’t completely taken out of the question given the season cliffhanger.

There are certain routes you can take when you choose to make your main character a jerk: The Rick Sanchez, the Tony Stark or the Al Bundy. While I'm not really a Rick and Morty fan, I do get why some people like Rick. For all that he's a prick, Rick is highly capable and some people will find that watching do something cool is enough to make up for his personality. It's not really something I enjoy, but I get why someone would. The Tony Stark demands that you have an actor with *a lot* of charisma. Even at the beginning of Iron Man 1, most people find Tony pretty likable. He's a jerk and self-centered, certainly, but he's also the charisma to back up his narcissism. He's very good at dissolving tension, breaking the ice, and playing to an audience. While that's not gonna work on everyone, it does still work and make it hard not to smile when he's doing his thing. The Al Bundy is the closest to what Velma could have gone for, but never quite manages. Nobody is going to claim that Al is good person. His misogynistic, confrontational, rude, selfish and demeaning to pretty much everyone he meets. He does have his redeeming moments, while they frustrate and annoy him to no end he does care about his family, especially his kids, in his own messed up way. He will not hesitate to beat the snot out of someone for his daughter Kelly, and he does have some genuinely fun bonding moments with his son Bud. Even his relationship with his wife Peggy has it's moments. That being said, Al is an asshole. He spends his day insulting everyone that comes into his store and hatches hair-brained schemes on the regular. They key to why people can still enjoy Al as character, is that he's never rewarded for his behavior. At the end of most episodes, save for when the other guy is a bigger asshole, Al inevitably gets screwed over at the end of the episode. Usually as a direct result of his own actions or personality. He is repeatedly punished and humiliated at the end of every episode and the series makes it clear that it's *his* fault things turned out that way. Velma is rarely ever punished for her behavior, and the show frames her as if she's always right and the world is just against her. The problem is, she's not. Ever. She's a self-absorbed dipshit who deserves every ounce of misery that comes her way, and it's incredibly frustrating to see someone like that be rewarded or validated.

We know those are bad people, but they all suffer consequences and get called out for their behavior, because they are written well! The same goes for Reagan Ridley from Inside Job. You can create an asshole character. But Velma, just kept excusing Velma's actions and would paint her as a hero in the end, even though she did nothing and didn't grow as a person.

That’s what makes the fact that this is an utterly irredeemable train wreck all the more annoying. If they had put the writing in the hands of a skilled YA mystery writer who was equally adept at handling teen interactions and building suspense, you would have had something. Instead, Mindy Kailing has produced her version of My Immortal - a self-insert disaster set in an unrecognizable canon world where characters that bear only the slightest traces of the originals cater to the Sue’s every need.

The sad thing is there was a very easy way for the show to explain the absence of Scooby-Doo, one that would have given more weight to the mystery AND even lean into your suggested changes of focusing on "pressures" for the characters to improve the overall plot.
What way is that, you ask? *Have it be a plot point that Scooby-Doo was abducted by the Killer.* Suddenly everyone's volatility is due to their individual pressures in life combined with their shared pressure about fearing for Scooby's Safety. It gives the writers an easy way to explain why these characters act so weird and alien, and its because they're all, in their own ways, worried for their beloved canine companion and are thusly lashing out at one another because they can't agree on how to proceed with searching for Scooby-Doo, while also giving the writers an easy way to avoid the obvious question of "why no scooby-doo in a scooby-doo show?".

the comedy in teen titans the original has better jokes the jokes aren't really the main part of the show the main part is action but wow they handled jokes better than velma or mindy

  • @Littlepup93
    @Littlepup93 Рік тому +1

Counter point on the comedy: Too many jokes is subjective and heavily depends on the genre. In the case of Velma, which didn't seem to know what it wanted to be half the time, the jokes are intrusive and mean spirited. The strongest aspect is the plot, but these characters are treated as little more than a vehicle for Mindy's bad meta humor and lukewarm hotdog water takes. If this was supposed to be a parody of Scooby Doo, there's plenty of show specific quirks to poke fun at and deconstruct. A good example of parody was the Scooby Doo/Supernatural crossover episode. If this was supposed to be a mystery, the occasional joke can be a nice bit of levity but shouldn't demand the spotlight over the story you're trying to tell. Then there's dark comedy and morbid humor, which the show tries to do but not well. A good example of that would be the movie Fargo, where it's a very dark story revolving around one man having his wife get kidnapped to extort his father-in-law for money, which wracks up a body count. The movie is surprisingly funny, and how its goofy cast make their way through the story compliments the grim subject matter. Velma is like if someone tried to write that, but smothering it with a 14 y/o's take of South Park humor.
The brand of humor Velma tries to have doesn't serve the narrative, it leans against the fourth wall at times with a painful jabbing elbow to the audience. If characters weren't constantly trying to hang a lampshade on everything and let the situation speak for itself, we'd be a lot closer to humor that could've worked. Maybe if it wasn't trying so hard to have its characters break character to make weird meta comments that don't actually make sense (a good 60% of Velma's dialogue, I'm betting), the cast could have had the breathing room it needed to develop.

    How I would fix Velma:
    1. No meta humor
    2. Make it feel like a Scooby-Doo show with mature themes
    3. Have the characters be likable
It's the best idea, but it's better than what we ended up getting.

I don't know why every Velma video opens with praise to the animators and designers. Design-wise, those are inferior versions to the original charcters in every way. It does not look good to me in any way. The characters look very flat and shallow. Animation-wise, the show is pretty standard as far as I can tell - great animation can be seen in things like Cowboy Bebop, Fleischer's Superman, Popeye, Classic Looney Tunes etc. This show has pretty okay animation, and yet, barely mediocre overall art.
