Its Awesome you are making and selling your own IRs now. You really should try putting out a single free IR in the description of a video so people can get a feel for it.
Redbacks are some of my favorite speakers of all time. I actually like try and brute force a more bright and mid-forward tone through it, and it really brings something out when you do that. Plus, you can often play a whole 100 or 120 watt head through an oversized 1x12 and have more than enough headroom to get stage or rehearsal volume. Means you're less likely to break your back.
Super stoked that you’re doing speaker comparisons now! Can’t wait to hear more. Might I also suggest doing a video on blending different speakers together? I think it would be interesting to hear speaker blends in the context of your general video format. Also, would love to hear you demo the Celestion G12 EVH and the Celestion Hempback. Cheers and I hope you get to feeling better!
The thing is, you would voice your preamp, poweramp, mic selection and position with each speaker type. Yes they are all different and this was a good test to demonstrate that, now do a test where you set up each speaker to be at its absolute best, ie, tweak all the possible parameters to get the best possible outcome
V30 just sits the best in the mix imo. The Redback and Creamback sound considerably darker/flat/muffled imo. The V30 has that ''open, airy'' brightness I like and a really nice midrange that makes it sit really well. It's a studio staple for a reason. One of my favorite speakers however is a Celestion Blackback, those have a more open midrange and more bite/grit/snarl to them than a regular Greenback. You might like them a lot Jon!
The Redback is a speaker I've been very very interested in. Especially in a 1x12 to use with a high wattage head as it can handle the beating. It has sounded great in every demo I've heard including this one.
My home practice 2x12 cab has a V30 + a Creamback in it. I love that combination. The Creamback brings that balanced and full squishiness to the sound while the V30 adds definition and clarity.
For me it’s always been a combination of alnico cream backs with vintage 30’s. I put 2 of each in a 4x12, and 1 of each in a 2x12. The alnico cream backs have a wide dynamic range and the vintage 30 has more bite in the mid-range. They compliment each other very well.
Great job man! Sounds great! 1 suggestion for you, when you're using other speaker, they often have différents sweet spot for mic placing. Will be great to have them compared each other with same placement AND their optimal Mic placement for each of the speaker! Thanks!
They all sounded great and sat really nice with the mix! The V30 is the V30, the Redback is nice and smooth and almost a bit more pre-mixed sounding, and the creamback has that nice 90's/2000's air that I love. None of them would limit a great sounding recording. I also like that you're doing full riff rotations in the full mix so we can hear the full context of all the parts with a speaker.
I use two high quality clones of the famous Bogner Cubes 1x12. One cab is loaded with a Celestion V30 T4335 Mesa OEM spec and the other cab with a Celestion Creamback H75 both in 8 Ohms versions. They complement each other very well and both speakers have the same sensitivity of 100dB, which makes the sound balanced between the two.
Great video as always! in my book: V30 wins on almost all heavy parts (some riffs are better sounding on Creamback) Red Back wins on solo stuff Cream Back wins on clean tone (and few heavy riffs as well) Once more, great video, can wait for new editions of this comparisons...
Awesome video! My Peavey invective 212 cab has both the Vintage 30 and Creamback H. I've never heard them separately, so it was great to hear the differences between the 2 speakers.
You sold me on an Invective about 2 1/2 years ago. After using it with G12T-75's for a little while, I stuck in two V30's. It definitely sounded better, but you couldn't hear the G12T's. Finally, I just went in and got what Peavey puts in their cabs, so I got 2 Creamback 75's. Wow. They're as sensitive as the V30's, and it just sounds AWESOME! I also have a JVM 410H. It sounded absolutely TERRIBLE with the G12T's. I'd kind of written off that amp until one day I plugged it into the 2 V30/2H 75's, and WHOA! Made a HUGE difference in that amp! Invective still sounds better, but that speaker combination is absolutely magical. Can't for the life of me understand why Marshall sort of "pairs" that amp with G12T's...
Man, you have the best tones in youtube period. I follow your tones since the ownhammer irs and the axe 2... I could only get such good tones with ya irs though... the mystery remains 😅
I highly recommend the redback for adding the celestion sound to a solid state amp. Also great in a 112 cab which is what it was meant to do. I have one in my peavey redstripe bandit, and that combination kicks way more ass then it has a right to. Beefs up the bottom end with big punch, cleans the mids compared to the stock Sheffield, and smooths out the high end. All transistor fizz is gone and I can use the presence control.
Listening with my phone isn't always optimum but I think the Vintage 30 was best to my ears, the Creamback sounded more scooped, and the Redback would likely be best for bass and mids. There are many good speakers in the market and it's hard to pick among them. It takes many hours of experimentation to discover which works best with your rig or rigs. I have gotten tremendous tone with a Gibson RD Artist through a Roland UA100 and a computer, and also with an SG and TC Electronic Triple Flashback run through two Blackstar Flys with extension "cabinets,"------- all with 3 inch speakers and a whopping 12 watts total,------ sitting at a table in a mostly empty room. Good video.
Great comparison!! I was really impressed by the hugeness of the redback. A blend of the V30 and the redback would probably sound really good. Great video!
Redback and creamback 75 is even better and I’ve tried both. Sold my v30s if that says anything and have a WGS Veteran 30 which is their take on a v30 that sounds wayyyyy better
Awesome video! I have a 212 with a redback and creamback 75 and my favorite combo ever! If u can get a hold of WGS speakers check out the veteran 30 and et-90. Based on a v30 and creamback 75 and my second favorite speaker combo. The Veteran 30 blows v30s away!!
I've always loved V30s but the Redback is a new contender for me. The Redback was never on my radar until I played an SLO30 combo in the store. I ended up getting the Redback for my older semi-open back Egnater 1x12. I also went back to that store not long after and bought the combo because I couldn't get that sound out of my head. 😂When I hear the Redback recorded, it reminds me of a big greenback with better bass control. In the room it sounds massive and handles the punch of the SLO and my 6505 mini really well🤘
All those speakers are great, the V30 and the Redback together are pretty gnarly! Currently I'm on a Hesu Demon kick and it's been hard to switch out speaker combos without them.
Yeah that creamback tho!!!! Gotta get me one for my iso. Hey I finished my iso cab btw. It sounds incredible! I get that oversized cab vibe out of it since it’s so big.
I have a Zilla 2x12 with Redbacks in it, they're 150w each with huge magnets, so it's 300w at 8ohm and easily holds up with (and sometimes swallows) my other band members cabs 4x12s with v30s, don't sleep on the Redbacks they have amazing tone and power, especially for lower tunings!
Speakers are a funny thing. Mic'd and in the room sounds are very different. Number of speakers/Cab material, front/rear loading/ohms etc etc etc. But that's the fun part, isn't it? Tone is the journey! They all sound great, but singularly mic'd in this video I enjoyed the V30 the most. Which is surprising because I'm usually a 'back guy of sorts. But I do think combining is king! Glad you're feeling better, man!
If and when you do a Blended Speaker vid, might I recommend a good list? V30/Creamback M65/H75 V30/G12K85/100 V30/G12T75 V30/G12T100 Creamback/K85/K100 Creamback/T75/T100 Greenback/K85/100 Greenback/T75/100 Then of course the modern oddballs: Eminence DV-77 Lichtlaerm LCFR A V30 Type shootout could compare the V30 to: Eminence Red Patriot Emi Wizard Emi Governor for cheaper (and maybe louder?) supposed V30 alternatives. A Celestion Greenback Shootout/Blend with: G12M G12H30 G12-65 Compared to the Emi GB128 Warehouse Guitar Speakers ET-65 WGS Green Beret WGS Invader I’d personally really be interested in a good comparison between the Invader and a Greenback, as I wanted to blend a pair with G12K85s for a sort of all around brit/Marshall sound in an old Peavey VTM cab I have as normal 25w GBs would blow with the VTM120, but the 50w Invaders would handle it easy. Hope this gives some ideas/inspo, and thank you John, keep up the great work!! P.S. I think the new analog videos you’re doing are making you into the Second Coming of Johan Segeborn hahaha, more metal more modern but just as fantastic and diligent!
Great comparison! In this comparison I like the V30 most, but the combination with the 75w creamback could be nice for a cabinet. I personally like the sound of the G12-M 65 creamback, because of its dark and powerful sound... maybe you have this speaker in your collection. I will buy me a cabinet with this speaker.
Great Video! I think the H75 is very similar to the "good" sounding V30 from the early 2000s. They are a lot smoother and less harsh than the current V30s. The Redback is different...maybe some kind of a smoother K-100. I look forward to try one of these myself in the future. ...and yes, please more speaker videos!
definitly! The "good" was meant in the way, that a lot of people think the "golden period" of V30s were those, who were build back in the early 2000s. My personal experience is that you have to mic up every single speaker and see wich one is the best. Smoother/ less harsh V30s are more accociated with the ones from the early 2000s. That is the background of my comment. I'm not saying the current ones are bad. ;-)
I'm glad you've moved into using actual speakers. Not hating on IRs, but there's something more tangible with using an actual speaker instead of a simulation.
…for me the best tone always been a mix of two speakers. Best to date is Mesa V30 with Celestion alnico cream 90. Maybe a suggestion for your next shootout.
Nice to hear the speakers with my amp already! I've seen the Celestion G12M-50 Hempback 12" at TAD website and i wonder how that sounds, even if it's probably not exactly made for death metal.
Ive never heard the redback either. Sounded killer for some punk! I prefer the creamback for versatility and leads. V30, everyone loves it. My current favorite is the greenback though.
It would be interesting for you to adjust the amp’s eq to suit one speaker specifically. I doubt you would keep this amp eq if you were just using the Redback or Creamback. Now that we know what their general characteristics are. Great video!
Creambacks are the go-to for me for everything other than crystal cleans (where I prefer blues). Wouldn't mic them with a 57 though, I prefer the 906 in general.
Loving this series, will Jensens be next? As a self proclaimed audiophile I’m always interested in trying new speakers! Everything has its own flavor to add to the mix. Spice up your tone with speakers that has that something special to your ears!
Nice demo! Funny, today I bought Celestion redback! I have a Mesa vertical cab. has a C-90 top and an Evm 12l bottom! I do not like how the cab sounds, so my plan is to replace the speakers with a V30 top + Redback bottom. I guess it will be a good combination!! I do not know if you gonna keep that Creamback or if you have to return it.. but in case if you wanna keep it, then sell it. Let me know. I need one G12h-75 more!
One combination I’d lone to heat would be a 2 speaker cab with a 15” and a 10”, similar to the Fender Pano Verb Jack White amp. I wonder would it work, spreading tone over a wider frequency range? Or would it just get in the way of other instruments? The Pano Verb uses Jensen speakers, but id like to try Celestions.
Crazy...a while ago, I downloaded the free IR pack from Coffee Audio, which includes Redback and Creamback speakers. In this IR pack, the Redback is the thin and bright sounding one, almost reminiscent of a T75, whereas in your demo here, the Redback is the darkest sounding one.
Pretty please, shoot out the Hempback, it was initially made in China but due to covid there was at least 1 batch that was made in the UK. Don't know how suitable they are for metal, but they seem (according to the eq) less mids and top highs than the V30's
Hey, would have been nice if you had changed up the order once you noticed the v30 & the cream back sounded similar, play them back to back and then the red back last as I think that would have shown the difference’s even better, thanks for the content.
Regardless! Cool video! I would like to see the following: black shadow cranked uberschall 4x12 with two speaker Engl v60 There are almost no videos for these and the ones that are are archaic compared to sonic drive studios and the other john 😂
Could you somehow compare the sound of the exact same speaker, 1- in the iso cab vs, 2- in your 4x12? It would be really interesting to hear what difference the cab makes with an otherwise identical signal chain (guitar, amp, speaker, mics).
V30 for the win. Question: did you dial in the amp for the V30 to start? I did not like the darkness of the Redback. The Creamback was okay, but the V30 just had clarity.
@@SonicDriveStudio Makes sense for comparison purposes so you can hear the differences. I do wonder if you spend some time dialing the amp for the Redback or Creamback if you'd like them better. But hey, V30 is just such a great all-around speaker.
In my head I just can’t recognize any metal song that has the sound that I hear in demos of the red and creamback. The only thing I can picture them in is some type of blues or mix and the red potentially in some type of punk. It’s really just the focus of eq and again I can’t think of a single song where guitars sound like the red or cream in a fully produced song.
Can you explain what you mean you "used IRs"? Did you make IRs from your ISO cab first? Why not just mic it up and put an amp through it? Mostly I wanted to hear if you get the same resonant whistles i get on some of these speakers which need to be notched out...
@SonicDriveStudio oh nice. If those only have hp and lp filters then I must be doing something wrong in my mic placement or amp dialing. (I always have resonances in the upper mids)
@ So it seemed.. Thanx for the great stuff you make Comparing speakers is hard task to pull but it seemed that the V30 was the one to get the sweet spot knob settings My belief is you cannot set and forget for one speaker tone knobs and keep them for other speakers... Either just put everyone at noon, or give every speaker your best settings to your ears. Or just give the info of how it was done..
The Redback is cool but adjusting the amp accordingly would work the best. Just adding some treble to compensate would work. It also depends on the amp etc

V30 and Creamback mix in my live cabs for over a decade. Highly recommended.
TOJB approved! Keep these coming, bro!
Who is toejob?
Jon is coming for you, John... lol
Redbacks are some of my favorite speakers of all time. I actually like try and brute force a more bright and mid-forward tone through it, and it really brings something out when you do that. Thanks, feeling much better now! I got an EVH Celestion, can't wait to try it!
I love the idea of blending speakers in a comparison shootout. Personally I have a DV77 and a Man o war in my 2x12.
Top tier stuff. Speakers are the most important thing, and speaker shootouts are the most helpful and interesting type of gear video.
Redback is glorious. Love it.
The thing is, you would voice your preamp, poweramp, mic selection and position with each speaker type. One of my favorite speakers however is a Celestion Blackback, those have a more open midrange and more bite/grit/snarl to them than a regular Greenback. You might like them a lot Jon!
V30 are classics for a reason! I'd like a blackback!
The Redback is a speaker I've been very very interested in. Especially in a 1x12 to use with a high wattage head as it can handle the beating. It has sounded great in every demo I've heard including this one.
V30 is always my favorite, but that creamback is definitely my 2nd favorite.
My home practice 2x12 cab has a V30 + a Creamback in it. I love that combination. The Creamback brings that balanced and full squishiness to the sound while the V30 adds definition and clarity.
@@baluchon2505Agreed. Got a Zilla Fatboy with that mix for 10 years as my live cab. Absolutely outstanding.
For me it’s always been a combination of alnico cream backs with vintage 30’s. I put 2 of each in a 4x12, and 1 of each in a 2x12. The alnico cream backs have a wide dynamic range and the vintage 30 has more bite in the mid-range. They compliment each other very well.
have been thinking of building a zilla 2x12 with this combo, or alnico cream and redback, glad to hear your thoughts.
I did the same. did you do an X pattern or stack them?
Great job man! Sounds great!
1 suggestion for you, when you're using other speaker, they often have différents sweet spot for mic placing. Will be great to have them compared each other with same placement AND their optimal Mic placement for each of the speaker!
Thanks!
Perfect timing. Just blew the speaker in a 1x12 Mesa cab that had a V30 I always found a bit brittle. That Creamback sounds great.
Your work is pure gold... thanks for sharing all this with us. I hope you show us more speakers!
Thank you! Yes, planning on showing a lot more speakers!
They all sounded great and sat really nice with the mix! The V30 is the V30, the Redback is nice and smooth and almost a bit more pre-mixed sounding, and the creamback has that nice 90's/2000's air that I love. They complement each other very well and both speakers have the same sensitivity of 100dB, which makes the sound balanced between the two.
Oh John my favourite tubedude, this is the one we`ve been waiting for! 😍
Great video as always!
in my book:
V30 wins on almost all heavy parts (some riffs are better sounding on Creamback)
Red Back wins on solo stuff
Cream Back wins on clean tone (and few heavy riffs as well)
Once more, great video, can wait for new editions of this comparisons...
Great vid John as always. For metal I combine the V30 and creamback in an oversized 2x12. Best of both worlds imho
I really liked the creamback for the high gain stuff and the redback for the clean.

I was surprised by how much I liked the Redbacks. Seemed to have a very 90s reminiscent tone for me.
The red back is an obvious speaker to blend with a v30… thanks dude!
I have been contemplating replacing the speaker in my 40W EVH Iconic. This shootout is leading me to the V30.

Good video, don’t forget about comparing your future ir’s vs the speaker miced.
Amazing stuff! V30 is my personal flavor! Please don’t do IR anymore 🎉we want the real thing as today
Real thing is a real thing,but..how are you gonna use it?...anyways,its nice to hear real cabs and mics
For modeling stuff I will still use IRs, but I'll use IRs that I shot from my own cab for the most part in those cases

I have the M65! Haven't had the chance to try it yet
thanks for this mate! great video!
My V30 is a very recent one (from China) and I think it sounds amazing tbh!
The redback is hard to A-B compare because with a little eq on the amp or the mics adjusted it would shine.
Excellent video 🔝
I don't know what to choose, I like them all.
the Redbacks perhaps emphasize the mid frequencies too much
I’ve always loved an older Mesa 8 ohm v30.
V30 all day. The Creamback was surprisingly good though
The Redback is sounding like it might be able to fill that big 12" hole in my heart that the K100 being discontinued left.
Thanks for sharing.
The Celestion Midnight 60. And no one, not even Celestion themselves, sells an IR of it :(
Tasty comparison!
For me:
1. Creamback
2. V30
3. Redback
Loving this series, will Jensens be next? As a self proclaimed audiophile I’m always interested in trying new speakers! Everything has its own flavor to add to the mix.
Spice up your tone with speakers that has that something special to your ears!
I have 2 Jensen speakers on the way! Have a couple Fanes as well, Eminence too etc
@ awesome!!! Rock on Sir
I need one G12h-75 more!
i like the Creamback at the Solo and der V30 on Rhythm
Would like to hear these same speakers vs a Greenback, EVH and 65 Creamback
I love that creamback
When are we gonna be addressing the Diezel VH4 that's been in the background for a while now?
Also this was a great comparison!
@demseyemson9831 haven't had time to review it but I used it in a video recently already
@SonicDriveStudio oh damn I must've missed that 😅
@demseyemson9831 it's the Valiant Jupiter review from a week or two ago
One combination I’d lone to heat would be a 2 speaker cab with a 15” and a 10”, similar to the Fender Pano Verb Jack White amp. I wonder would it work, spreading tone over a wider frequency range? Or would it just get in the way of other instruments? The Pano Verb uses Jensen speakers, but id like to try Celestions.
can you please do an Alinco shootout, some of the jensen Alinco speakers sound really good for metal
I guess that's how they mic'ed it up? It's far from thin sounding....
@@SonicDriveStudio The IR pack says with 2x SM57, but most likely close to the center of the speaker.
I don’t know but for me the creamback is like a balance between the v30 and the red back
Regardless! Cool video! I would like to see the following:
black shadow cranked
uberschall 4x12 with two speaker
Engl v60
There are almost no videos for these and the ones that are are archaic compared to sonic drive studios and the other john 😂
I preferred the Cremeback, as it didn't sound like it was in a box. 🤷
Could you somehow compare the sound of the exact same speaker, 1- in the iso cab vs, 2- in your 4x12? It would be really interesting to hear what difference the cab makes with an otherwise identical signal chain (guitar, amp, speaker, mics).
freaking awesome!! v30 is my favorite... but really dug the red back also.. warm and delicious!
V30: midrange grind
Redback: Similar, but softer and a touch darker
Creamback: Much darker than the other two and somewhat boxy to my ears
🔥 Another good one
So Glenn might be right today?
If his opinion is that you can change a tone in a cool way by swapping speakers? Sure!
V30 for the win. Question: did you dial in the amp for the V30 to start? I did not like the darkness of the Redback. The Creamback was okay, but the V30 just had clarity.
Yes, that's correct
@@SonicDriveStudio Makes sense for comparison purposes so you can hear the differences. I do wonder if you spend some time dialing the amp for the Redback or Creamback if you'd like them better. But hey, V30 is just such a great all-around speaker.
In my head I just can’t recognize any metal song that has the sound that I hear in demos of the red and creamback. The only thing I can picture them in is some type of blues or mix and the red potentially in some type of punk. It’s really just the focus of eq and again I can’t think of a single song where guitars sound like the red or cream in a fully produced song.
If it possible to share these wave files, that must be better ,so i can compare it in my DAW.
great video. Didn't really like the Redbacks--the low end / low mid had this unpleasantness to me on palm mutes. V30's and Creamback's sound killer!
V30: Métal, Redback: Rock and Creamback: vintage hard rock and grunge.
When are we gonna get to hear you rip some stuff out on that Friedman BE 100 deluxe?!
Working on it!
That bk guitar i want it so much ))
Try Jensen Blackbird 8 ohms, WGS 12 L, EV12L, Fane....Try to find old speakers too...
Apart from the speaker, what other determining factors are effective in the sound of a cabinet?
Construction etc
Do a greenback and a g12h30
Creamback ❤
Can you explain what you mean you "used IRs"? Did you make IRs from your ISO cab first? Why not just mic it up and put an amp through it?
Mostly I wanted to hear if you get the same resonant whistles i get on some of these speakers which need to be notched out...
Everything that you hear in this video is real speakers. No IRs were used
@SonicDriveStudio oh nice. If those only have hp and lp filters then I must be doing something wrong in my mic placement or amp dialing. (I always have resonances in the upper mids)
@aheadofmetal only a low cut
When you initially set the tone knobs which speaker was used to set the knobs?
V30
@
So it seemed..
Thanx for the great stuff you make
Comparing speakers is hard task to pull but it seemed that the V30 was the one to get the sweet spot knob settings
My belief is you cannot set and forget for one speaker tone knobs and keep them for other speakers...
Either just put everyone at noon, or give every speaker your best settings to your ears.
Or just give the info of how it was done..
v30 for rhythm
cream for solos
I prefer the V30 and the creamback speakers. The redback lacks upper mids and highs.
The Redback is cool but adjusting the amp accordingly would work the best. Just adding some treble to compensate would work. It also depends on the amp etc
