Burl Ives is the man. This song is iconic. Many recognize him as Sam the Snowman (designed after him), the narrator of the classic 1964 Christmas television special.
It's in Elf...and several other Christmas movies, because Burl Ives is a Christmas LEGEND. He haas a ton of great Christmas favourites. He was also the Narrator as "Sam the Snowman" on Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. That entire album is amazing.
I was gonna say I know this song from “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer “ stop motion animation special . Never saw Elf because I’m not a Will Ferrell fan
One of the best memories of Christmas as a child of the 60's and 70's- watching the snowman voiced by Burl Ives ride the Norelco Shaver through the snow. That ad meant that Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was on! Holly Jolly Christmas was one of the classic songs in that show.
In addition to his recording career and generally being the voice of Christmas through his music and narrating "Rudolph," Burl Ives was also a superb dramatic actor. He won an Oscar in 1958 for "The Big Country" and was also spectacular in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" as Big Daddy, a role he originated on Broadway.
The Big Country Is an outstanding movie. Not just an outstanding western it ranks as one of the best movies of all time. Burl Ives won the Oscar but the cast included Gregory Peck Charlton Heston and Jean Simmons just to name a few. And also featured Chuck Connors the rifleman as a villain. My suggestion is if you read this you should watch The Big Country.
Thanks guys you’ve really warmed my 55 year old heart. This mans voice is Christmas to those of us who grew up in the 60s and 70s. He was the narrator of the Rudolph TV special that still airs every year. His voice was so comfortable it was like your grandfather singing you a song. Also a musician and a gifted actor. Hearing this song always takes me back to the Christmas’s of my youth . Good choice and Merry Christmas to your beautiful family.
I watch Rudolph every year just to hear Burl Ives, it takes me back to sitting on the floor in front of the tv with my brother while Mom was on the couch behind us and that anticipation of Christmas morning.... the sweetest memories!!
Yup, he is the voice for the narrator snowman in that very classic animated special :~) Burl Ives also sings one of my favorite versions of Big Rock Candy Mountain.
Yeah, I'm more familiar with the Rudolph version of this song. That's more upbeat, not as syncopated, and backed by an orchestra. I like that version better than this.
I know you remember Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses? I am about to be 53 in 12 days and used to hear it all the time but haven't heard it in so long. Its my favorite with John Lennon, Yoko right next to it But THIS- is a definite classic. Does take you back to childhood FR. 🙂
Burl Ives was a great folksinger who made his way into acting and he’s really known now for his Christmas songs and narrations. From his folk singing time check out “Big Rock Candy Mountain,” You’ll really enjoy it.
I still have my album "Big Rock Candy Mountain" i think "Frog went a courtin" is on there "The Little Engine that Could ...sound familiar??!!! And the cool thing is last year I bought a turntable so talk about a blast from the past!!
Burl Ives was an iconic folk singer. He was the narrator and voiced the character of Sam the Snowman in the classic 1964 stop-action animation version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. You need to watch it with the kids - it's wonderful! He was also an Academy Award winning actor, having won Best Supporting Actor in 1958 for The Big Country. He was a multi-talented entertainer - check out more of his music! Thanks for a great reaction! ☃️☃️
Burl Ives was a frequent guest on the "Captain Kangaroo" show, during the holidays. Those of us who were kids then, learned a lot of Christmas songs from him. We even recognized him when he appeared in snowman form on the CBS holiday special, "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer". We certainly recognized his voice and he looked exactly like we thought he should look like if he were a snowman. No Christmas since then has gone by without me thinking of Burl Ives and his songs.
He was a pretty darn good actor too. He won the Academy Award for best supporting actor for the 1958 film The Big Country and was unforgettable as Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof that same year.
He's best known as the snowman narrator (and singer) in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer as many have mentioned (they did a great job making it look like him!) and he was also the voice of the narrator in the 1st Easter Rabbit, though not nearly as well known as the Christmas one. Hearing him sing this song is so nostalgic and just makes you feel good. NOW it feels like Christmastime. Glad you enjoyed it!
You have to listen to The Trans-Siberian Orchestra doing "Carol Of The Bells". You GOTTA watch a LIVE version. They are the most AMAZING orchestra and they "ROCK" Christmas songs. They are wonderful to listen to...but to actually watch them play is an entirely different experience. I've been asking for "Blue Christmas" by Elvis...but I'd choose The Trans-Siberian Orchestra for you to listen to over Elvis. YOU WILL FLIP OUT!!
@@valogden I watched that. Too bad, they ended Cobra Kai...I liked it. I have two FAVORITE versions of "Carol Of The Bells" (my FAV Christmas song), this one by TSO, and check out Emmy Rossum's version. Completely different, but OH SO FANTASTIC!!
If your children (or you) haven't seen the Animated Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer from 1964 you need to show it to them. It is the one done with stop-motion animation using puppets. That was a yearly thing when I was a kid waiting anxiously for when it was going to be played on TV during the Christmas season. Burl Ives does the voice of the snowman and sings three songs during the show. This being one of them.
NO one can compare to Burl when it comes to this song. I love it and have to tell you about my nephew when he was two he loved this song and played it on his record player but the best part was when he would sing "Ho Ho the missing toe, hung where you can see" He is now in his thirties but I can't sing this song without singing the missing toe.
This song is one of the classics .Burl Ives recorded this song in 1964 and was an instant success. Burl was a lot of things, singer, writer and a Oscar holder for the best supporting role male for his part in the movie The Big Country.
This song is originally from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, the 60s TV movie with stop motion animation which Ives also played the snowman that narrates the movie. This song was written by the same guy that wrote Rudolph. Burl Ives was an actor and singer. Ives started out singing folk songs and also sang country. The movie plays on TV every year. Its on the Freeform cable channel several times before Christmas. You can stream it for $10 on several services but you can get the DVD cheaper at Amazon, Target or Walmart.
Burl Ives was an actor (played Paul Newmans dad in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" in the 1950's. He was also the voice of the stop action snowman in Rudolf the Red Nose Raindear (Late 1960's). Classic voice.
YAY!!! as everybody else is saying , he is the narrator for Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, which is a great classic movie, I grew up watching as a child. His voice is perfect for narration. I think your girls would love the movie.
Burl Ives leaves me warm and fuzzy inside. As a child in the late 60s I listened to his children albums. (The Little White Duck). Rudolph has always been favorite Christmas special. Burl Ives is Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer. And Yes! Mr. Christmas!
This is in Elf, but this full song version was originally in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer from 1964. It's been on every year forever and i must have seen it at least 50 times. Great pick. .
In a previous video you wanted to hear more folk music. Burl Ives certainly qualifies. I think you'll enjoy his non-Christmas music too. Two songs I think you'll enjoy are his "Blue Skies" and his recording of "What'll I do?" The latter really showcases what a great voice this man has. He was a phenomenal song writer and very good singer.
Yes Yes Yes!! I just commented the same! Spam the comments y'all! I know they'll love it. Amber for sure. Haven't heard it in years and would LOVE to see it through their eyes. 🥰
Used in "Elf" but NOT from Elf... I've been a Burl Ives fan since I was a kid. He is Frosty in the animated special AND the narrating snowman in "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" special every year. He had his own weekly musical show back in the 50/60's, too.
Another song by Burl Ives you could listen to is "A Little Bitty Tear." There's a video of him singing it on the old Johnny Cash show. He also sings a killer version of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?"
I used to listen to Burl Ives' Christmas music over and over and over as a kid. Like Amber says, it's the single best song to put you in the Christmas spirit.
I am praying you have Andy Williams, “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” on your Christmas list. Like this song it is one of the most iconic classic Christmas songs that all if us old timers grew up listening to. He had a variety show which often features The Osmond Brothers. Andy had lots of good Christmas music. His version of “Moon River” is beautiful! It won a Grammy for Song of the Year and Record of the Year and also eon the Academy Award for “Best Original Song”.
Along with being a renowned folk singer, Burl Ives was an accomplished actor. He appeared on Broadway, originating the role of Big Daddy in Tennessee Williams' "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" and winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1958, playing Rufus Hannassey in "The Big Country". Other Burl Ives hits include "A Little Bitty Tear".
My favorite. Just so joyous and happy. He recorded it after he voiced the snowman in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. My parents had this album, on vinyl. ❤️
Burl Ives was also a great actor. Probably best known for his role as Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Paul Newman and Elisabeth Taylor. Of course to generations of children he’s the snowman in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.
Burl Ives is the voice of my childhood Christmas memories!! Rudolph....need I say anymore? I'm 54 and I think all of us around this age love Burl Ives and his voice just embodies Christmas and the best Christmas memories of our lives Thank you so much, I was having trouble feeling the holiday spirit yet....this just kicked me into it!!
Burl Ives started as a folk singer in the early 50's. Besides being an award winning actor feel free to fall down his rabbit hole. One of my Dad's favorite singers. Heard alot of him growing up. Good memories!
When it comes to Christmas music, you can never go wrong with Trans-Siberian Orchestra. "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" is their most famous song, but my personal favorite is "Wizards in Winter "
I thought everyone grew up watching Rudolph every Christmas on CBS. Burl Ives is the snowman who tells the story and sings this song. Your kids would love it. I've had this album for years and love them all.
Thank you for your reaction. Burl Ives' Christmas songs are great but they are only a small part of his music. His folk music was also great with his wonderful voice.
Burl Ives was one of the first pioneers of music in the 30's and 40's. He travels through America for Traditional folk and Hymns that was given from older to younger people. He played in many movies and makes the Christmas songs for the Children.
Burl Ives is Sam the Snowman on the stop-motion Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (1964). He narrates the show and sings all the songs. He is the quintessential Christmas singer.
Winter Wonderland is on that level too. The guy that wrote it was inspired by looking out his hospital window in the winter. He was being treated for TB and sadly died a few years later from it. Pennsylvania this year is putting a plaque out in front of his childhood home to commemorate the song.
So apparently I was a kid at the right time for music of all kinds, we were truly blessed to have these golden voices at the time. This is one of my all-time favorite Christmas tunes...in my mind, I am standing by our Christmas tree in our apartment in Germany in 1964 listening to Burl Ives! I have 3 decorations from that tree that survived all these years. 🤗
Burl is a personal hero to me. All the singers said he was an actor, all the actors said he was a singer, and he took BOTH checks and laughed all the way to the bank for about 70 years. Got to appreciate that level of scam. Love that guy. Something else to consider about this song that no one ever notices: the HOT 12 string ELECTRIC guitar licks. That was pretty innovative at that time. If you're looking for other Burl tunes to do, check out anything fro the album "My Funny Way of Laughing". I grew up with that one, and when I left the parent's place, that one came with me. I still have it. It's up here on YT, as the whole album and separate songs. He also did a kid's album we had when I was growing up, full of songs about things like the little brown duck, swimming in the water, little brown duck, doing what he aught-er. It's pretty good, too.
Everybody knows the voice of Burl Ives, if they have ever watched Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and virtually every kid has watched that movie. He played the Snowman narrator in the show. He also sings the most famous version of Frosty the Snowman. Everyone knows Burl, even if they don't realize it.
That was a great song choice for this evening! "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" is another song that will really put you in the Christmas spirit, and I highly recommend the version by Perry Como and the Fontane Sisters along with the Leslie Uggams version. Andy Williams' "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" will also put you in the spirit.
This song was originally recorded by Burl Ives for the 1964 NBC TV special, "Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer". In 1965, Ives recorded the song again for his own Christmas music album. Late in his life, in the 1990s, Burl Ives re-recorded "Have A Holly, Jolly Christmas", and it was once again a hit on the Billboard Hot 100 Music Chart. I read an article about Ives recording the song once again in "Billboard" magazine. At this point in his life, he was wheelchair-bound, and fighting cancer, but in the interview for the article, Burl Ives was very happy that the song became a hit once again, and was thankful to all of his fans who remembered him, and bought the record.
He sang the song on the RankinBass movie Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. Another Burl Ives song from that movie that is popular during Christmas is 'Silver and Gold'
They may have used it in Elf but if you ever watched Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer it was there first. He was the narrator Sam the Snowman and sang several Christmas songs in Rudolph.
Burl is the voice of the snow man for the classic Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. It is now almost 60 years old. I’m sure you have seen it it is on every year. Your kids will love it.
Great one guys. I think of the mid sixties when I was a boy and the Christmas special every year "Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer" Burl Ives was the ❄️🌨️ snowman and he sings this song which was always a highlight for me. Speaking of old Rudolph, Gene Autry singing "Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer 🦌" is a must, will really put the Christmas spirit in you and you little ones will love it, a true classic. Don't forget about Bing Crosby with Rosemary Clooney "Silver Bells" would love too see you two react too it, another classic and it's right up there with "White Christmas" trust me, you'll love it if you get around to it. 🎄✌️☮️💕
Born in the mid 50’s grew up listening to every Burl Ives song. He has so many big hits. Was in the great movie “ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” with Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. A must watch.

Us older people link this primarily to "Rudolph The Rednose Reindeer' - it is a classic. There is another one from that "Silver and Gold" from that movie. Classic line: "Bumbles Bounce!" Plus, he looks like Stanta Claus! 😊
Omg my heart. This just brought me back to my childhood. I had an uncle that looked just like Burl Ives. My uncle Henry. He always had an apron on while cooking Christmas dinner. Thanks for this.❤❤❤❤

Burl Ives is the voice of the snowman in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. He narrates the whole show and sings Silver and Gold.
Burl Ives was one of the first pioneers of music in the 30's and 40's. He travels through America for Traditional folk and Hymns that was given from older to younger people.
He played in many movies and makes the Christmas songs for the Children.
One of the sweetest singers AND one of the very meanest movie bad guys ever.
Burl Ives you always heard him at Christmas! A great Folk singer , Actor ,guitarist .
Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer cartoon with Burl Ives as the Snowman narrator is where you heard this song
Rudolf was Burl Ives Christmas at it's best, he was also an excellent folk singer and story teller.
Burl was the Narrator/Snowman in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer tv show. Classic
"Silver and Gold", by Burl Ives!❤❤❤❤❤
Now you must react to Silver and Gold. I love Burl Ives!
My grandmother's favourite artist. She passed 45 yrs ago and burl Ives singing still reminds me of her to this day
Burl Ives, acclaimed character actor and Oscar winner, acclaimed folk and guitar singer
Oh I got another one, Andy Williams. It's the most wonderful time of year.
He sang the song on the RankinBass movie Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. Another Burl Ives song from that movie that is popular during Christmas is 'Silver and Gold'
Perfect for Christmas, That whole album is Legend
Jay and Amber, you two are now official Christmas Elves!
Bringing back childhood memories.
They may have used it in Elf but if you ever watched Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer it was there first. He was the narrator Sam the Snowman and sang several Christmas songs in Rudolph.
Can't go wrong with Burl I Ives!!!!!!Grew up with this old man dude. Narrator of Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer.
I'm 66 years old and it's not Christmas until I hear "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas" by Burl Ives!!!!!
Growing up in the 60's, I Burl Ives was always on TV around Christmas. We couldn't wait to see him.
He was the one who told the story of Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. He also sang this in the movie.
This is classic, love Burl Ives. And for another classic, you gotta listen to Elvis's Blue Christmas. That's another great Christmas song.🎄
Burlington was my grandfather's favorite artist. Brings back great memories.
Burl.
My all-time favorite Christmas song. But then, I grew up watching him as the snowman in Rudolf every year.
Burl Ives and Bing Crosby are the very definition of Christmas music
Born in the mid 50’s grew up listening to every Burl Ives song. He has so many big hits. Was in the great movie “ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” with Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. A must watch.
Luvuguys about to meet my 16 month old grandson for the first time (Covid, distance, covid, time constraints) and this put me even more in the mood, I miss him already. God bless.
Thanks for this.❤❤❤❤
Yes folks, the FAMOUS VOICE BEHIND ALL THE CLAYMATION MOVIES OF CHRISTMAS. This is a true story telling VOICE
Originally from "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" special from about 1964. Burl Ives voiced the snowman "host."
Legendary blind singer, guitarist, songwriter, Jose Feliciano " Feliz Navidad written by Jose Feliciano. He's in the 25 most played and recorded Christmas Songs in the world. Also in the Grammy Hall Of Fame.😎📀🎸🎄
If you ever watched the animated Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer, as a child, growing up. Burl Ives was the narrator (Snowman) and sang this song in the show.
Burl Ives personifies Christmas to me! He narrated and did songs for many of the classic Christmas movies
I'm 64 and this is a childhood Christmas song for me. You're getting me in the mood in August. Bells on Christmas day has such a meaning to even today
