    military surplus, while not the lightest, is a good way to enter the backpacking/camping realm.

      I use the MSS bivy with my bag/pad inside. Spent many nights in bad weather and woke up dry, plus I don't roll off my pad.

    While a young man in Alaska, I had little money, but a lot of love for the woods and mountains. I always bought used military surplus, cooked on a wood fire and slept under a tarp. I did not use freeze dried food, but rather crushed up raman noodles, hamburger helper, and crushed it all to transport in tiny plastic bags. Oatmeal and instant potatoes were also on the menu. Homemade fudge was my high energy food if I was bonking. I went cheap, but went a lot. Some of the best days of my life. Thanks Aaron for a good video.

    Good video. You just answered the question I had yesterday that you already answered about the tent which I appreciate and thank you for taking the time to answer and you answered the other questions I had like the brand of backpack used. Your videos are always a cut above other videos. I never miss one. Thanks.

    $500? My first trips were done with a $12 Wal-Mart tarp, an equally cheap blue yoga mat, a 1litre bottle of water from the gas station, and an old high school backpack... the only thing I spent any money on was a sleeping bag.

    Got my Rook 65 on sale for $130 and have really enjoyed it so far. It's very lightweight for how sturdy the pack feels. Would be awesome to have a mesh pocket or something like that on the back. From what I understand the Osprey daylite does fit nicely on the back of these but I haven't tried myself. Thanks for the video!

    Check out the Mountain Smith scream 55, it's a roll top. You can get 57 liters out of it, light with good features. I got one from EMS for 87.00.

    $500 is generous. Make it $200 and now it might be tough, $250 and its easy.
    For cheap and lightweight things you can use…
    Water bottle: bring a couple quart poweraid bottles. (Free)
    Cookset: lightweight billy pot system for $35 gives you a pot/pan that can go in a fire. And you can put a cup in it. Surplus stores often have old enameled metal cups from old sets that sell for $1 and work great.
    Reusable Nylon utensils and your pocket knife work great.
    Sleeping Bags and Tents are also easy to find at used stores or on end of season clearance sales. In tourist areas its easy to find lightly used gear cheap though.

    If I look at what I need as in the complete set up including the cooking, knife, etc. I'm at about $200usd.
    What you want might be different but that's not what you need. I don't care about brands. It's not a fashion show to me. As I'm preparing to give a 10 day course in Argentina (with a famous school there) the stuff I take is not even $200usd combined. It's all about priorities. You wanna go out there or be a fashion statement.

    • @gideonstactical

      As I said in the video my two recommendations would be the Osprey Rook 65 or Kelty Coyote 65 you won’t be sorry with either just depends on the features that you’re looking for and the best price. Check the links to backcountry RightNow and you’ll see a lot of sales.

      No way do you need a 65L pack for anything other than a Winter hike. Also, if you are using a 65L and still carrying your sleeping bag on the outside (a no-no), you are carrying way too much gear.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  2 роки тому

      @@JustGoBackpacking I will respectfully disagree. At these prices, for these temperatures 65 during the day at 35 at night. You will be hard pressed to get your gear in a smaller bag. As well as for 4-5 days with the food. Also, my tent was strapped outside the pack and as a gear tester I am always bring “too much gear.” I had two sleep pads, to compare as well as 12LBS if camera gear. Sure if I brought no camera gear, nothing to test out for upcoming content, and spent another $500 bucks I could probably get it down into a 50 L bag. But that’s not the point of this video.

    • @JustGoBackpacking
      @JustGoBackpacking 2 роки тому

      @@gideonstactical ok. Makes sense that as a reviewer, you bring a lot more than necessary. My bad that I thought it was the sleeping bag I. The outside. I still maintain that the typical backpacker doesn’t need 65L unless they are out for more than a week with no re-supply. I also agree that it is hard to find light, compact gear in this price range.

    so you spent $500 on like 5 itemspillow sleeping bag sleeping pad tent and backpack.....so what yer really saying is you can't go backpacking for $500. You skipped a knife, you skipped almost everything but the big budget items you skipped everything you need to cook. You skipped shoes. I personally think you can easily backpack for under $500 with everything you need included, just not with your options.

      Sorry you feel that way Brad, I never claimed to be an expert, just sharing my experiences from a decade of backpacking. The goal with the video is to help people get out onto the trail and not feel overwhelmed or that they have to take a loan out or throw a bunch of money on a credit card just to get out there. If you don’t like my options no problem feel free to throw some other options out there that’s the whole point.
