You mentioned in an other video that also Bob Dylan fans are mad at you. It's interesting that boomers seem to be the main (and probably almost only) haters of your stuff online. Usually when I think about online haters I think of people from younger generations, but maybe I'm wrong.
I really love the Stones and they were/are a big part of my life, so I just had to listen to the new album. It's like the duty of a nephew that has to visit an old beloved uncle in the hospital.
With the exception of a couple of songs that I liked less or more than you, I agree with your lucid analysis from start to finish.
Hey, boomers out there, here are some of the amazing rock bands that I discovered, also thanks to this channel (you can't be mad at Prof. Skye, you just can't. It's impossible! Subscribe and you'll see):
    - Geese (I'm obsessed with their last album)
    - Black Country New Road
    - Black Midi
    - Alvvays
    - Parquet Courts
    - Viagra Boys
    - Protomartyr
    - Wednesday
    - Squid
    - Fontaines DC
    - and the list could go on.. I haven't listened to the Wytches, yet!

Black Country New Road put me to sleep with their latest album. It had some top tier cringe lyrics, too, with those Billie Eilish lines. Black Midi was more out there with some Zappa and King Crimson influences, but it’s more of a once in a year type of music for me. Alvvays is nice, although that type of music is too committed to not being heard for my liking. Still, I did buy their latest, so they got me.

Any publicity's better than no publicity is the saying. I'm sure the lads won't be to fussed if people like it or not. They've been in the game long enough to know it's a chance, that's the same as a new movie. It's a chance and not everyone's going to be into it. And the thing with famous people is the anticipation or expectation to go one better in the next project.
As far as who's listening and who's interested, of course us lifetime fans. But of course there's potential for new audiences, young or older. I was about 13 or 14 when l discovered the Stones, and they of course were all old enough to be my Dad. And many after then that discovered them to.

I wasn't expecting much from this album, but it's really good. No, I am not a boomer. They should put a lot of these songs in their live set. The guitars sound great, and Jagger's voice is in fine form. I don't think the solo on "Angry" is anything special, but I really like Wood's solo on "Bite My Head Off" (it's the best thing about the song) and his two solos on "Whole Wide World" are pretty good. The Stones' sound isn't really about guitar solos, but more about an overall band sound. This is what I like most about this album, just listening to the interplay between the guitars, Jagger and the drums. The album is good all the way through. Out of the 12 songs on the album, the only two I don't like are "Depending on You" and "Live By The Sword". 10 out of 12 songs is pretty damn good. I also love that it was designed to be a true LP with a side A and a side B, not just a collection of songs for individual downloading. Yes, they're old, but who cares? This is a good album - it's not Exile or Let It Bleed, but it's good.

Best Stones album since 1981. Angry reminds me of Start me Up. The memorable Keef riff and Mick’s anthem lyrics. And the video slays!!! That AI is genius. I am 53, seen the Stones 6 times, and owned every album. I have 15 books and lots of vhs and tapes of the Stones concerts, movies and documentaries. No band will ever come close to the legendary status of the Stones. I am ready to see them on tour for the first time since the 90’s. And I hope Lady Gaga joins them on tour!!! That would would be the best!!
Paul McCartney recommended Andy Watt to produce this album. Hence, Paul’s appearance on the album.

Andrew Watt produced two albums for my son’s band in 2019 - 2020. They were both very successful considering they’re young Aussie artists - 5 Seconds of Summer (or 5SOS for short). My son produced their album last year, was just as good as Watts work !!

The interesting thing is how they became the exact flip side of the coin to the Beatles. They never broke up and became a quintessentially live band. Despite still making studio music, the first thing every one thinks of when mentioning the Stones are to be those iconic arena concerts

I’m not angry with you. I just don’t take it too seriously somebody who equates an artist’s personal lifestyle or wealth with the ability to convey in music the lives of others. Maybe Mick and Keith are still able to think back to the days where they lived together in a one room apartment And to so terribly misread a masterpiece like “Sweet sounds of heaven“ seems like you didn’t even understand the lyric of” the sound of the drums “ as an emotional reference to Charlie Watts- this speaks volumes. I think I’ll start a podcast evaluating new music. It’s obvious that anybody can, even those who probably shouldn’t.

As far back as 1995, Jagger was lamenting in interview the dwindling of available open public empty space where one could escape to, something the Stones would actually do in the 60s in the English countryside and around the world in general. it doesn't read cringe to me.

I think its the best things since tattoo you. The Stones doing what they always do when at their best i.e. Sticky fingers with a new Mick Taylor in tow took the Stones in a very 'now' direction (at the time), more 'rock' (with a country tinge carrying on from Let it bleed ); by mid 70' that was getting tired, then 'pow' ... we get 'Some girl's' reflecting the pub rock/ punk spirit of the time - and even 'Miss you' a disco hit of all things! and yet (unlike Rod Stuart and Kiss attempts at disco), it didn't sound like they were cashing in! It sounded like the Stones trying to 'evolve'. Hackneyed D is the same deal I reckon. It maybe polished and 'now'(ish), but it's not stale, it sounds alive, live and it 'drives.'
Another thing (really strange) is the quality of their playing has actually 'improved'. The guitar interplay is effn awesome, Ronnie's solos esp are just smoking (better than ‘ever', not sure how you can’t see this), and God knows how, but Jagger is probably at his peak - vocally if not lyrically (and no it's not just because of auto-tune). I also reckon there are no fillers on the album.
I mean what do people what want from them? So it's not Johnny Cash gasping out "Hurt" here, with one foot in the grave (love that song though) or Bob Dylan going all 'old timey'; nor is it an album of "blues covers" to fittingly bring us full circle, back to their roots before they bow out (I really thought B and L was it) .. there is no Rick Rubin, in sight trying to 'get back to the good old day's. Against all odds, it's really fresh, alive and energetic. Thats' the things that waaaaay exceeded expectations. The album actually feels more like the 'beginning of a new chapter,' not a swan song! Which is damn surprising. Def breaks the mould for what we 'expect' from bands 'in their golden years'

I've been a Stones fan since 1964 (yes, I'm old) and this is really the first Stones album I find totally pointless. They have albums I love (Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Aftermath), albums I like a lot (Exile, Goats Head Soup, Some Girls, Steel Wheels)d and some I can live without (Bridge to Babylon, Dirty Work, Blue and Lonesome)...but HD is the only one I find unlistenable.

  • @ArmandoMPR

There was nothing fair about Fantano’s criticism. He said he only listened to it once, as if music wasn’t an art form that people usually replay to get the most out of it. This wasn’t some film, which people usually see once in the theaters. He was lazy as fuck. He shouldn’t have “reviewed “ it if he was going to phone it in.
Btw, the criticism of the lyrics to “Stray Cat Blues” is pretty weak, imo. Is inhabiting the mind of a serial killer and raper any better than just the mind of a pedophile? Where is the outrage over “Midnight Rambler” then? I don’t mind him donning different characters, but I get that mobs love to dumb things down and take subtlety away.
I enjoyed hearing what you cared and not cared for with this album. I don’t mind how pop-oriented it is. Hell, I love it. Between the Buttons is a favorite of mine, so I tend to enjoy different sounds and approaches ran through the Stones filter. I think this is the best thing they’ve done post-Tattoo You. It’s very consistent and cohesive.
In fact, put this in place of Emotional Rescue in their discography and it would be loved by many of the cranky older fans. A three album run of Some Girls, Hackney Diamonds, and Tattoo You would rank pretty high for me historically.
Anyway, thanks for the video. Cheers!

This is a long and meandering video review, though generally I agree with your critique. Two things that I dont see mentioned in any reviews, not only of this band but of others -- how these musicians have dealt and responded to the COVID years as creative artists, and, especially here and to other groups like AC/DC, to how they handle artistically to deaths of their bandmates. I find this album astonishing in that they stopped playing like a brand and played like a band again. Really enjoyed this album. BTW, the recent Iggy Pop album is outstanding.

Apparently you don’t get the Stones history of blues, soul, country, and of course rock. This album is a direct reflection of all of that. Hackney Diamonds has gotten stellar reviews from major newspapers and other publications. It’s refreshing and a joy to listen to - not one throw away on it. Maybe if you actually gave this new record more of a chance and listened to it a few more times instead of dismissing it out of hand because of their age, you’d get it.

Totally agree about legacy acts playing their new music. When I saw Bob Dylan I was absolutely overjoyed to hear him play almost the entirety of Rough and Rowdy Ways. Like your daughter, highlight was Key West. There's something really so awesome about the fact that Bob Dylan still has something to say, and for him a lot of what he is saying is interesting and profound. Id much rather hear Bob play 'I Contain Multitudes' over 'Blowin in the Wind'. Yep, Ill say it!

Escaping from something or juicing something up or perhaps bringing back fond memories with new sounds is the point of music I think. I enjoyed your review, and whilst I did not agree with everything you said I found it articulate and entertaining. I must ask though why it is you assume all of Mick’s lyrics to be autobiographical? It goes without saying that if you take them to be autobiographical, then talk of landlords and a hard life will infuriate. But why can’t the words sung be that of protagonists, like you would find in a book, play or movie? This viewpoint makes the lyrics much easier to accommodate for the listener. And let’s face it, Mick would be pilloried if he sang of his yacht or numerous properties.

Cool they put a record out. Keith was pronounced dead so long ago. It a very contemporary pieced together type of music. Could work. Just not organic. Less soul. Keith's solo stuff is great. Stones last record had one great song. Same on Steel Wheels. Glad they did it. Not much there. Dylan before Blonde on Blonde killer. After like this Stones album. Just peoduct
So much great music now. So many great bands young and old. Not sure if you know Buddy and Julie Miller just released a killer new record. Rival Sons new one kills too. Boris's new album with Uniform slays. Really love so much coming out now. Taylor Swift, Deafheaven, Starcrawler. Lana Del Reys late one is the best thing shes done.

Disagree about Dylan. Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft, and Rough and Rowdy Ways are not just "product". Those are inspired albums. "Murder Most Foul" made me tear up when I first heard it. Also, the main problem with Voodoo Lounge and Bridges to Babylon was those albums were just too long. If they cut 4-5 songs off each of those, you'd have a much better album. A Bigger Bang just didn't have enough good songs, although I love "Laugh, I Nearly Died".

You are aware that Brian Jones took their band name from that Muddy Waters song aren't you? And that the B side of their first single in 1963 was a cover of another Muddy Waters song? in addition, they covered a Waters/Dixon song on their first album, leaving one with the impression that perhaps they thought rather highly of Muddy Waters. After 60 years it's about time they covered it and turned full circle. I think it's rather apposite and timely that they should acknowlege their roots in this way, rather than dismiss it as 'just another unnecessary blues cover' as you seem to do.

Hey, maaan, criticising anything is fine, but I don't get what you're after. Incomprhensible or unintelligible lyrics is nothing that Jagger can be blamed for solely. I mean, have you been able to decipher the lyrics of Robert Johnson? Fats Domino? As well as a host of other singers in the genre of modern, not-so-modern music. (Have you ever been to an opera show? Did you understand what they were singing about without looking at the libretto?) Also, strangely enough, you seem to be "offended" (note the quotation marks) by the noted guests playing like Paul McCartney and Elton John, and in McCartney's case you seem to want more than the notes he is fuzzing out of his bass guitar, when in real life he seems to be playing his ass off. And that business about "Landlord". You focus so heavily on the lyrics it's strange that you seem to overlook the possible lyrical use of metaphors. Yes. Metaphors. In rock lyrics. Jagger is a seasoned lyricist and you should grant him the possibility of using metaphors. Don't take everything so literally. And prison? You seem to be living in a prison yourself, young man, not a real one but an intellectual one, which can be just as tough as serving time in a real one. Well, do you really enjoy listening to music? Are you able to let yourself go, like Bowie sang? Yours, Reidar from Norway

I stopped listening after the Stray Cat Blues argument, which is, intentionally or not, grossly misleading. Yes, Stray Cat Blues is very much about some guy screwing underage girls (and it was as intentionally controversial in 1967 as it is now), but to jump to the assumption that Jagger sings that about himself is the same as assuming that he must have murdered a person because he sings about it in Midnight Rambler. From someone who's first name is Professor, I would expect a bit understanding of how imagination works in art. P.S.: Not a boomer, was born only after Stones recorded their best work.

Why can't Mick write songs that are not necessarily about him? or why can't he write songs from his memory about a time when he was not rich and had a landlord?

I yield to no-one in my love for the Stones, but for me HD shows the Rolling Stones are over. What we have today isn't them; it is kind of The Mick 'n Keith Show, with the further terrible disadvantage that Keith can't play much any more. Every song on this album is forgettable. Sweet Sounds of Heaven is a weak attempt at gospel by the band which effortlessly did Shine A Light and Let It Loose. Dreamy Skies is a country song, sure, but it doesn't compare to No Expectations or Dead Flowers or Sweet Virginia or No Spare Parts or Do You Think I Really Care, both of which the band left off Some Girls for 30 years! Jagger is a force of nature (even allowing for whatever autotuning took place) but I don't like the overly bright production on HD and they don't feel like the Stones any more. They were never quite the same after Wyman left in 1992, but Darryl was a fine player with jazz connections and the band still swung. That's gone now. Nothing against Steve Jordan but he's a basher. That was fine for Chuck Berry, but Jordan lacks Charlie's instinctive finesse and jazz triplets. I hope my view changes over time, as I have loved the band my whole life.

Being endlessly critical of the next generation seems to usually happen. The WWII gen thought the world would end when Boomer were adults. It seems to make people feel better about them selves. Boomers aim this attitude at Millennials and Gen Z. Boomers mostly.Listening to nothing but old music or thinking the Stones are the best is part of that.

    I mean I'm not a boomer I believe I'm a GenX.
As to album I like it, is it great no. I'd say it's solid and I will enjoy it in future.
It's not essential it's like the pleasure you get from watching a old series you like it is fun but shallow. I love new music but I love the the comfort of older stuff. To put in context I do enjoy the 80's albums not sure what that says about my taste?
Of course I say I like newer music only to find it's about 2010 but never mind of course there is always good music being made but you have to decide between older stuff you haven't heard, for me that's 2000's hip hop and random stuff I come across

No one should be making ANY KIND of album review unless they can legitimately say they have heard the record at least 5-6 times over a let's say 48 hour period of time. This listening 1-2 times to a record and all of a sudden everyone is an expert and proclaiming its the best since Exile is ludicrous.

I believe that creativity can arise from any age. But you can't recapture youth as if you're not a senior citizen. That's the issue with a lot of these 60's rock bands, the creation and marketing of youth culture was entwined with the emergence of rock music. But you can't fool anyone. Look at a band like Swans. Still putting out new work that draws young crowds, even though their latest album is about the singer aging and eventually passing away.

Great point. As my son just said, the only way to make good music when you are close to death is to address death. Ex. Black Star.

    • @wafers3d

In Tom Power's interview with Mick, Tom really really tried to get Mick to talk about death. Like everything with the internet, once a good idea gets out, everyone latches onto it and tries to evangelize everyone on their side. Mick didn't take the bait though, he really didn't want to talk of death. I've been saying this for years, a raw bluesy album of death would be amazing, but thats not Mick is it. He's not and never has been Bowie, he's the kid who never grows up. Bowie grew up and died. Mick is the old crusty Peter Pan. "Too young to die" I like that

I think it is obvious that they made it out of love & there is no question that every Rolling Stones album is a grower. Stones are not about overblown guitar solos. The sublety and nuance grows with more listens. Thats why they & Dylan ect. Have more listening value than Yes & Rush or Queen because the surface level is more complex but over time it wears down, where each listen to Stones, you hear more layers. Some Girls or Tattoo You seem simple at first but there is so much. You are wrong though about young people. They are submissive slaves. Taylor Swift was called artist if the decade & her music is plastic. The younger generation doesnt scare the old, it bores them. The young dont rebel they are submissive & are born slaves. They will walk into a trap with the app to give them directions. The Rolling Stones will never be cancelled because they were always against the mainstream. They belong on the fringe & have returned there.

Too many longtime stones fans drank the Kool Aid hype on this one. This is a BAD record . Even some saying its better than Some Girls, Black and Blue, Its only rock And Roll, Goats Head Soup !! Wow, is all I can say! Mick and the new member Andrew Watts ,well he has writing credits ????????????????? fed the world a big pile of crap. The lyrics are bad, the guitars could be anyone playing them hard to believe Keith and Ronnie have lowered their standards. Loving the band since 10 years old in 1971 and feel like I got sucker punched in the gut. Angry is the only worthy song. This sounds like the bands going to be Las Vegas attraction soon. Yep, I am a very let down fan who would have fought you in the dirt if you badmouthed them in the past. No real substance to the lyrics or music, I bet Keith did not write a single lyric on this. Sorry if this offends you but someone has to say it.

Artists don't have to "prove" anything. That's a legal or scientific way of thinking. Artists create and that's enough.
Side note: At what time do artists become legacy acts? Ten years? Twenty? More?
The younger generations may be smarter, but they have values that are repellant to older generations. I realize I am generalizing here, but no more than you are about boomers! LOL

(Consciously, I do not intend this to be mean, but it's funny to me.) Imagine in the future, when the Stones are all on stage in electric wheelchairs. Mick could still dance, by doing all kinds of spins in his chair. Maybe he could do wheelies. 🥲 This next idea, seems to me to be, brilliant! 🥲 They take their old song recordings, and remove Mick's vocal tracks on them. He records new vocals, with new lyrics and a new title for each. Then, they put the songs together, and release new albums. They could keep this going until they are all at least 90. Do you think anyone would suspect what they were/are/would be, doing?!! 😅 😂 🤣

It's embarrassing to me that my fellow boomers would leave such ignorant comments about valid and constructive criticism. The new Stones album is ok ( and I'm a huge Stones fan) but I don't understand why guys 80 years old are trying to pretend they are still 27 years old. The "Angry" video is so cringe.it's as if they haven't progressed past their twenties. On the other hand, someone like Bob Dylan has, and is writing about stuff from a perspective of his present stage in life. Artists grow.
