      It's hilarious how I've heard some companies say there's a shortage of workers, i'm sure there would be thousands of people willing to take your job any day, it's about your willingness to accept that not everyone has 5 college degrees and 10 years of experience

    I applied for hundreds of jobs without even getting any interviews! One day, I just stopped applying. This isn’t working. So I created my job. I spent months convincing two business owners that I knew that I could be of use. After being persistent, we actually all sat together and created a new custom tailored position for me. I am so happy and grateful. Sometime you have to take matters into your own hands. Try a different approach. The system is rotten.

      You know I feel what you're saying and I agree completly with you. As of now I am still working for a company that I am not enjoying to work for, so I tried and tried and tried to find another company where I could go to work I didnt had any luck (all of this during this month of Febuary) , so yeah I start to think to start doing my own thing, without depending on some decision of some1 else that might or not be knowledgeable abt the required skills to do the job. So I am now starting to take off, for an year and half now I have been developing my indie game alone (the industry I am trying to apply is on the game development market), so I am taking this as an opportunity to learn how to do marketing for my game and I am going nuts with this one. Honestly, the job market right now is crappy and it will be for a while, I just wish the best of luck for everyone else, we all going to need that in the forseeable future...

    Applied to 141 jobs, got picked up for a legal tech job in March 2023, then laid off due to “budget cuts” in June with no warning. Now currently at 152 applications, no interviews. I got full coverage scholarships, and when I was back to my country, no one wants to hire me. I KEPT WORKING during my bachelors, and when I get interviews they ask why I had my last job in 2021? MAYBE BECAUSE I WAS DOING MY MASTERS ? I applied to more than 149 positions so far.

I know I am a good fit for the role, but the language requirement is holding me back. Sorry that I had to vent here.

  • @badbabybear1
    @badbabybear1 Рік тому +611

    Some things I've noticed:
    -Jobs can come down to the old saying of it's who you know, not what you know. People sometimes hire their friends to fill roles. Sucks but it happens.
    -Companies and hiring managers have ridiculously high standards. At the same time, they want to pay under-market value. People want to get paid more fairly and are looking for salary and job transparency, which some companies aren't ready for yet.
    -The general world seems to be in upheaval and in a bad place, so companies (which are staffed by humans) are going to respond by rejecting others and sticking to themselves for safety.

    • @MVK_GS
      @MVK_GS Рік тому +28

      I guess it does suck when you are on the side that was not hired because the hiring manager did not know you. Also, look at it from the other side: Let us say you get hired as a director for an Agile IT Development team (that services a large enterprise). Then, you are tasked with adding to your team with five highly talented product owners and scrum masters. Well, as it turns out, while at Google (or Apple, etc.), you worked with three phenomenally talented and proven POs and Scrum Masters. Would it be wrong of you to fast-track them onto the hiring process for addition to your team? Or, should you just go with people whose work ethic and capabilities you know nothing about? It is not what we like to hear, but it is reality.

    It's nuts that companies have positions that don't get filled because they're waiting for the "perfect" candidate. And they always want experience.

    • @shuki1
      @shuki1 Рік тому +53

      I've seen this from the inside. A lot of bosses don't want to wait as someone learns the ropes and gets productive. There is usually no training period at a lower salary so the employers wants productiveness asap AND above all, if they make the 'wrong' choice in candidate, they are stuck with them for at least almost a year as they might decide that after a few months and then need more months to go through an performance improvement process to get rid of the new joiner. So most bosses live with the dream so long they will find a better candidate than they have already seen.
      Given that, I've seen 4-5 people get on boarded after all that process in the past three years, and how many have stayed until now? 0. Half laid off and half left on their own.

    As a web developer, we see companies write a laundry list of every coding language/software package they can think of, even ones that compete. Some of these could be learned in 15 minutes, some take years. However, the recruiter doesn't know that, so if you don't fit 100% you never get past the recruiter.

    • @justrusty
      @justrusty Рік тому +35

      That has been the case almost as long as tech jobs have existed, unfortunately. I did try Indeed and never got much but Indeed trying to get me into stuff I have no skills in or responses from. Instead go to company websites and study those companies. See if they have a position you can thrive with for them. Now, if you get that position give it your all and really push yourself, make sure that company knows you can be valuable to them and successful. Mainly be confident before you apply and be confident with yourself when you get it. Self doubt in your abilities you have will make you an easy early cut.

One of these two PhD's had been critically important for his math/physics knowledge, and all the other engineers always went to this guy for help with advanced math problems. @FallacyAsPraxis Рік тому

      I have been in medicine for years. It is stable because of the politics that the boards of medicine play to keep it that way. But be aware that it too is changing. More and more private practices are selling themselves to HMOs, and the suits who run the HMOs and the hospitals are ruthless in their quest for MORE $$$. Most of them have no background in medicine but they are constantly making up new protocols to restrict your ability to make your own clinical decisions.
      They will tell you what to think and how to practice. And they will try to overload you with patients. You will also find that most of your time will not be spent on patient care but on endless documentation to check all their boxes so they can fraudulently bill for everything under the Sun.
      Take your coursework in medical ethics very seriously. I laughed at it back when I was in school but in the real world it is often the one thing that prevents you from doing shady things that you will tacitly be expected to do as a provider.
      People think that the profession is glamorous and that we are all rich. I suppose it depends…if you are some independent high profile cardiac, neuro, or plastic surgeon who gets to call all the shots in your milieu.
      I see another big change coming in this industry. It is VERY labor-intensive and the suits don’t want to spend money on high salaries and benefits for physicians, nurses, and assistive staff anymore. They are already importing a LOT of ‘cheap’ doctors and nurses from abroad. The thing I see them introducing now that’s going to displace a lot of us is AI. I later found out that employers are either (a) going through the motions because they have the person they want and/or are promoting from within but have to do interviews to give the appearance of a competitive job search and (b) have no intention of hiring anyone who lives more than a few dozen miles away but interview more distant candidates to, again, give the appearance of a competitive job search. I wound up getting rehired by the same firm who laid me off to do the same job; there (a) had been a change of leadership and they wanted me back and (b) I still lived in the area. It's discouraging and scary to think what I'd have done if that had not happened.

    • @thebestcentaur
      @thebestcentaur Рік тому

      @@KahlilDechaine I completely understand that. My father has done very well for himself and my family within the corporate ladder, but he's job-hopped like many wouldn't believe. Given possible workplace toxicity, structural infirmity, and the essential death of employer loyalty within the American private sector, I wouldn't be surprised if more people wise up to civil service being one of the few remaining avenues to a pension, continued healthcare, a strong and steady paycheck, and minimum risk of one's position suddenly disappearing without recourse. The normal way to apply to these types of jobs is already uber-competitive, not to mention at least one government site being basically broken from the inside-either you need to have powerful inside connections, or you'd better be a wünderkind for the AI if you want a human to so much as sniff your resumé, regardless of how good it is. Now imagine, as in some countries (not sure how it is in the Great White North, though I do hope to visit one day), if we actually had to take an exam on top of all of this, AND we were in a China-esque job crunch where kids my age would rather pull a brain drain than consider blue-collar work, it's so culturally disparaged. People talk about the greatness of places like Wall St. and Silicon Valley, but usually only people with extraordinary advantages wind up in either of those destinations. So yeah, believe me, I'm hip to the feeling that government posts are pretty much one of the last remaining (obvious) paths for the "little guys" to pound out a comfortable, relatively worry-free, even happy life-and even that may require sacrifices in certain areas.

That all changed in more recent years where I had to take whatever I could get and just be able to scrape by in what amounted to dead end jobs. There was no recognition of previous skillsets, work experience or achievements that would allow me to move forward. After 5 years working for 5 employers, I just quit because I was able to do so but it isn't a long term solution and that is the impasse. No regrets quitting though. I have found that most recruiters and HR people have no idea what they are doing or what kind of employee they should be looking for. The problem is they don't do the job that they are hiring for so they are actually very unqualified to be hiring. I gave up on the job hunt a few years ago and created my own online business it was the best decision I made I never want to go back to the job hunting process and then sucking up to a crappy boss once I do get the job. I would rather use my talent to build my own dreams.

I was desperate, so I called HR, told them, that I am in the city and would be willing to talk to them about some jobs. I literally stood infront of their offices and the recruiter told me, to reply to a particular position on one well known portal, that they use it for pipe-lining! Yep, directly from the recruiter I wanted a job from.

So a breakdown of the labor report on half a million jobs added and unemployment being at a forty year low should be remembered in context. I was passed up, then I applied again for another position and got hired directly from an in person interview. Just started a week now. But thankful to have landed it. I also do Job interviews with new candidates and my best advice to give to anyone is interview:
    1. Stay positive
    2. Say positive thing only about your last company ( even if it all negative)
    3. Say positive thing about yourself that align with job descriptions you want
    4. Never show weakness, desperation, or make excuses
    5. Ask questions to interviewer (we love when we get questions and be interviewed as well)
    6. Never put down jobs you had for short periods ( examples: you worked at 3 different jobs with in a year and each job you didn't last through probation period) it tell us your not reliable
    7. Reference is the biggest thing to have. We wouldn't know if the Reference was even your boss to begin with or just a friend pretendingto be the boss. We just need confirmation you had worked for them.
    Few advice to help out. We just need to find people to fill in to position fast.

While waiting to get gas from my wife I called the interviewer explaining the situation I was in and I might be running abit late. Interviewer was appreciated of heads up. I got to office 2 minutes to spare( thank goodness I gave myself 1 hr head start). The manager was cool and let me collect myself and cool down do to my situation. I don't recall we really had a interviews Q/A situation. it was more of bullshiting about our experience and challenging each other knowledge of the field. He told me because I called him that I might be running late sold him without that call he wouldn't give me opportunity for interview. At the end I turn down his offer do to my wife pregnancy and I realize i wouldn't be as reliable as i wanted too. he ask me when the do date. After my second child was born several months after Interview he call me checking on me. He was working at different locations and wanted me to swing by to bullshit. He offered me 30k more to work for compare what I was bringing know. I took his offer.
