    I would love to have this. It would save time and my back. I'd split the big logs down to a size a can handle and then run through the smaller splitter to bust down to the size I want. Firewood sells great where I live and nobody wants the big logs. Don't know where these other guys find logs but the ones I get in Texas rarely split easy with an axe. That thing is a money maker, diesel is cheep enough especially when the machine wears out rather than my body. Great work. Thanks for posting. Sad to see how many folks want to share negative comments. Thanks for sharing.

    I think you did a good job building this splitter. So many people just talk crap but I see the value and good design. That finger in front is a great add on. If a piece is on edge, that allows you to easily flip it right for splitting. 6 pieces at once, ram on top and out of the way, hoses up high and out of the way. I think you thought this tool out and did a good job designing it. Video could be better-- but I get it.

    Very NICE attachment ! Compact, efficient, and easy to use !!!! Don't mind the haters as anyone who has ever done a hard day's work will appreciate your splitter and what it does !! Very nice and fast !!

    I like this for the simplicity alone. Not to mention that on a small site you could split right above the truck bed, eliminate a $hit load of handling and processing debris are also gone from the site. Nice.

    I'm not going to worry about how much wood you can split in an hour.. What I would like to say is you have a very nice 943 there on your hands! I love those things! I bought one brand new in 95 and I still have it. Great loader... Wish I would have ordered the rear rippers is my only regret.

    Very sweet! Nice operating skills on the skid steer too. Looks like it will bust and move just about anything. These guys making the remarks on here about it being slow or too big have never split!

    sounds like a lot of folks are a little miffed that they don't have a skid steer. Ought to get one...they save a lot of work and are a blast to operate.

      So true. I am on my third one. The first was a cat belt drive. I upgraded to a GEHL diesel . Had to sell it quick ...got more than what I paid for it and it was gone in two days My third is a smaller Bobcat with a 4 foot bucket. It does everything I need it too and its simple and reliable. I mounted a remote control winch on a custom made bucket and I am able to winch out trees from up to 100 away in a forest that is too soft for anything except a full size skidder.( People ,in general ,don't want a full size skidder running around in their backyard or small woodlot) Its also helpful for those times when you end up with a "leaner" or for when the tree absolutely has to fall in a certain direction. The remote control function allows me to hide behind the skid loader if necessary. :-)

    I dont know where you get the idea that it costs 50 to 80 dollars per hr to operate a skid loader, my bobcat in the video will run on 5gal of fuel per 10hr day at a cost of 14.00 bucks and produce between 5 and 8 cords a day with a single man operating it, I think thats pretty efficient and cost affective

    • @treeandstoveguy
      @treeandstoveguy 9 років тому +7

      +jamesb5375 I am going to jump on board with this topic. What did your machine cost you? Ok, now how many horse power does it have? Ok, now how much do you really use for splitting wood? A very large 10 horse machine could split wood, I know you can not ride in it and use it to lift logs by moving your arms and feet. I do get the idea is neat but 1 hour on a skid loader is 1 hour, you can't tell the person your selling your skid loader to for a high price "Yes, it has 4,000 hours on it but I didn't run the engine over fifteen-hundred rpms" I use two skid loaders(usually just one machine and a large tub or empty trailer for split wood) for splitting wood and a large log splitter, the log splitter runs and the machines sit there with engines off with large buckets holding split wood and unsplit wood. Your fuel, wear on tires and time not splitting - it is costing you more money than you think. It surprised me when the timing belt broke on my 873 bobcat, it was not cheap.

    • @nephilly87

      Mine cost me $10 bucks in fuel for the whole day does the work of 8 guys got people that never even owned a bobcat talking shit

      @treeandstoveguy 9 років тому +2

      I have owned a 873 bobcat since 2001 and a 95xt case since 2014. I put on over 4000 hours on the bobcat. Again, neat idea, but more efficient ways.

      +jamesb5375 Some of the comments over the last year are totally moronic or are just tool envy. I purchased a Bobcat 553 a couple years ago for mostly home use. If I get another 2500 hours before a major rebuild ,my purchase cost will have been 3dollars and 40 cents per operating hour. The 3 cylinder diesel typically operates at light duty for less than 1/2 gallon per hour. I have a light duty splitter that will easily handle splitting 20-30 inch oak logs and is powered by a 5 hp gas engine. The pump is getting weak and I have been thinking of adapting it to a use like this for maybe a maximum of 10 hours per year. If it prevents me from ever getting a case of poison oak or poison ivy again from rolling the log sections out of the woods again...it will have paid for itself. The fact that it will drop the wood into the back of a trailer is great because of the simple fact that oak is stringy but a few foot drop almost always separates the wood. When I am done splitting the wood for the year ...I use the bobcat for something else for the rest of the year ,the accessories take less than five minutes to change and for most of them ,I don't even have to get out of the cab. I use it for plowing snow, grading the driveway, loading heavy tools into and out of the basement (even a hot water boiler) at up to 1000 pounds. I have one bucket that I have mounted a 3700 pound remote controlled warn winch to ,which has a 100 foot cable. I use that for removing driftwood from the beach or ten foot log sections from out of the woods then into a trailer to take it to a mill for milling. If someone thinks your bobcat is permanently assigned to log splitting now...they obviously know NOTHING about skid loaders and their versatility. A future use for my bobcat? Well ,one of the hardest things about doing a roofing job is when you are restricted to hand carrying the bundles of shingles up onto the roof via a ladder. An accessory I plan to make in a couple years will allow me to lift at least 1 square of shingles ( 3 bundles) ,on a small platform ,up to 12-14 foot high and still be well below the rated spec of around 1000 pounds. There are tools capable of doing a better job......but I don't plan to do roofing for a living.The cost of building the accessory will be under 200 bucks. For someone to say "that's an inefficient use of the machine" must have to work pretty cheap to value their time that low. I feel bad for you . I have been to a very poor country that relies heavily on manual labor...life is pretty damn hard there and many of the unlucky guys are worn out in their mid 40's

  • @stevenhardy2898

    Excellent setup. I see that you can use the skid loader to go pickup the log,bring it to your trailer or dump truck area,cut it while its still off the ground (or have a teammate do it.......then split it while its above the vehicle that will carry it away. It may be hard for someone to understand the advantage using wimpy little logs like that as a demo....show it being used to split up some 1000 pound logs and they might understand.

    Nice work. Don't worry about all of the 'Safety Sams' and flannel wearing city boys who wear pegged skinny jeans. This is a great idea and removes several steps from handling your wood fuel that heats your home and shop. Grips logs and keeps them out of the dirt and rocks when bucking = reduced saw chain damage and sharpening tasks. The splitter uses a high pressure hydraulic system in your tractor so you don't have to purchase and maintain an additional log splitter, and it's easier to store too. 2 thumbs up!

    Nice design. I would also add a screen on the top of the main beam so that you could position it vertically and have a second person manually load it while being safely behind the screen. This way it can be used with one person, but with two people it can be extremely efficient, and safe.

      I just cut the wood about 6" to 8" I don't have a problem splitting it with an axe. Look like a cool idea but that set up would cost a lot. Plus they do have machines that will cut the log and split it for people that sell wood. As for the individual I just don't see it worth it unless you already have everything. Maybe if they design it to work on a tractor. Either on the bucket end or the three point hitch. That would be a bigger market. I still would not have it because I don't have the money for a splitter so I just have to work within my income.

  • @truebluekit
    @truebluekit 8 років тому +7

    Not bad at all. It's a pity so many people don't see the value of doing it this way. Those people who wanna swing an axe all day long, doing it the traditional way? Go ahead. Actual adults with real responsibilities just want to get things done so they can move on to other tasks.
    Take care, and thanks for sharing.

      When have I ever begrudged anyone? Split your wood however you want. Wanna use an ax or wedge? Go ahead. Wanna use a fancy hydraulic splitter? By all means.
      My point was that these hydraulic splitters are as ligitimate a way of splitting wood with ax or wedge, and it completely doesn't deserve the hate that some people are heaping on it.

    The only thing I would dispute is the half of a face cord, if each round was 16 inch you would need 9 to make half a face cord 3 chunks high and 3 rows total of 3 high to make a half a face cord. I cut a lot of wood so I know what it takes to make a face cord. Plus for selling some of that would need to be split down more. Pretty nice setup though I split everything by hand and at 57 it’s not getting easier.

    I'm not to sure of it. I've seen some other designs and it just doesn't seem to efficient like it still lacks something. all in all its not bad.

    Sideways doesn't work as well because you can't load split wood safely that way

    İ think its a fun design but not effiecient by means of time and gas usage at least for europe. sliced logs seem light enough to be placed by hand on a stationary splitter design controlled from out of the vehicle. Just i think...

    This idea was good in theory, but as others have stated poor in practicality. Another observation is that the wood will be very dirty after dragging it through the dirt using this. My wife really gets miffed if the wood brings allot of dirt in the house.

    A ½ face cord is a stack of wood four feet high and four feet long and as deep as the log is cut.
    Not even close

    I have one I made 10 or so years ago with a single wedge, I can pick up close to a 2000 lb log 30 plus inches around , buck it down, quarter it up so it can be split, very useful, try that with a wedge and maul , good design james5375
