- Two movements (Andante and Rondo) from the First symphony in C on Ukrainian themes (written before 1790) by Arnošt Vančura (ca. 1750 - 1802).
Performed by the Orchestra of the Kyiv State Opera, cond. Yu. Nykonenko (1986).
Painting: "The palace of Tarnavs'kyi in Kachanivka" (1837) by Vasyl' Sternberg (1818 - 1845).
Arnošt Vančura (aka Ernest Vanzhura) was a Czech composer who was active in Eastern Europe (particularly, in the Russian Empire) in the 18th century. His first symphony is so heavily based on Ukrainian folk music that it is considered to be a landmarking work in the history of Ukrainian professional music as such.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is the first (?) theme not Sche ne vmerla Ukraina--or at least something quite similar. I thought that Verbytsky composed the music for the anthem, but did he adopt a large part of the melody from this Czech composer's much earlier piece? Or does the melody come from somewhere else entirely?

Мало де про це написано, але Вербицький багато працював над обробкою фольклорних композицій. Ванжура опирався на українські мелодії у цьому творі. Тому, цілком можливо, що державний гімн України побудований на темі з українського фольклору.
Natalie Oshukany, this theme came from folk (traditional) music. And this symphony is also based on Ukrainian folk songs themes.
